I was a naughty kid who was running wild. My mother had always woken up to the neighbor's shouting for her to hurry up and catch me while I was on the rooftop. When I grew up, she told me that she was not able to do any housework without chaining my foot to the table leg.
The country had just fallen into a civil war between the south and the north when I was ten. And the old TV was the only way that kept us updated with the latest news. Despite the terrible war, I developed a lot of hobbies such as football, hide-and-seek, flying a kite, etc.
Hunting was my favorite hobby. I owned a slingshot(弹弓)that I used to hunt down all the birds in our neighborhood. My mother got tired of the complaints(抱怨)from people of our community and finally decided to hide my only weapon. The next morning I searched everywhere but all attempts ended in complete failure. All of a sudden, the idea came to my mind that it might be hidden behind the TV.
We lived in a small house and the TV was planted in a small window just above my father's bed. I carefully inserted (嵌入)my little fingers behind the TV to look for the slingshot. I tried to allow my fingers to go deeper and then was the sound BOOOOM: the TV landed just inches beside my father's head and broke apart. My father opened his eyes in shock and immediately beat me for what I had done. Time went on, and my father would sometimes remind me of the incident and tell me that he took it that it was a bomb thrown by one of the warring sides.
Things got much better after I grew up. Fortunately, last time, I bought them a color TV set as a
compensation (补偿) for being a naughty kid. And the good thing is that nobody calls me “the slingshot kid” anymore.
24. What do we know about the author's childhood?
A. He knew nothing about his country. B. He was badly treated by his strict parents.
C. He suffered too much from the civil war. D. He still lived a colorful life during the war.
25. What can we learn from Paragraph 3?
A. The author loved watching TV.
B. The author bothered the community a lot.
C. The author's mother loved complaining to others.
D. The author's mother failed to hide the slingshot.
26. What happened the moment the TV landed and broke apart?
A. My father punished me for what I had done. B. My father felt proud of what I had done.
C. My mother supported me for what I had done. D. My parents both praised me.
27. What is the text mainly about?
A. A story about family love. B. A touching story during war time.
C. A boy's relationship with neighbors. D. The growth story of a boy.
C
I will not go on about the causes of sunburn because you probably already know. If you get sunburn, you may be feeling a bit embarrassed about it. Once you have sunburn, the damage is done. So try the following ways to ease the discomfort.
Cool it down by taking a bath or shower. Keep the water and room warm, especially for children, as they may easily feel cold. Some people like to add 1/2 cup of baking soda to the bath water. This may help reduce your pain. You could also place a wet and cool cloth on the burnt area for about 15 minutes. Do that several times a day.
Apply moisture(润肤膏). You can choose some cream that makes your skin not that dry. Apply aloe, either the plant form or gel. Aloe contains active things that help reduce pain. Over the next few days, the skin may peel(脱皮). This is the body's way of eliminating the dead skin, so keep using such cream to help make your skin comfortable.
Leave any blisters(水泡)complete. This helps speed healing and avoid infection as burst blisters can easily get infected. You can cover blisters to protect them if needed and definitely do not wear clothing that will cause friction(摩擦)as this can “pop” the blisters. Damaging the blisters can, and probably will cause more pain with rubbing on soft skin and also cause infection.
Give pain relief if needed. The medicine aspirin is not recommended for children.
At this point, the person may not be comfortable, so do not make it worse by applying something that can prevent healing and increase or lock in the heat under the skin, therefore causing more burn damage.
See a doctor if:
◆ it covers a large part of the body or is severe in nature.
◆ there is a high fever, chills (寒颤) , rash(疹子), nausea(恶心), and severe pain.
◆ feeling faint or dizzy, rapid pulse or quick breathing.
◆ extreme thirst, little or no urine(尿) output or sunken eyes.
28. Why do some people use baking soda after getting sunburn?
A. To help prevent disease. B. To feel better in this way.
C. To avoid getting cold. D. To reduce the burnt area.
29. What does the underlined word “eliminating” in Paragraph 3 mean?
A. Protecting. B. Covering. C. Improving. D. Removing.
30. What does the author consider important after getting sunburn?
A. Avoiding breaking blisters. B. Going to see a doctor immediately.
C. Taking medicine to avoid infection. D. Preventing the skin from developing blisters.
31. What should an adult avoid doing if he /she is suffering sunburn?
A. Using what adds to the skin heat. B. Putting aloe on the burnt area.
C. Using aspirin to reduce pain. D. Using some moisture cream.
D
On July 10-12, 2017, a huge iceberg (冰山) named A-68 broke free from Antarctica's Larsen C Ice Shelf. The crack (裂痕) that led to the separation was observable in 1963. However, the crack remained inactive for decades before suddenly spreading northwards and widening by 18 miles between 2011 and 2015 and then an additional 13 miles in 2016.
Iceberg separation is not a natural part of a glacier's (冰川)life cycle but a result of global warming. However, the separation of A-68 is receiving a lot of attention due to its size. Measuring 5,800 square kilometers, the A-68 has reduced the Larsen C Ice Shelf area by more than 12%.
“The interesting thing is what happens next, how the remaining ice shelf responds,” said Kelly Brunt, who has studied the effects of the warming climate on the Larsen C Ice Shelf since 2015. “Many people may ask, ‘Will the ice shelf weaken? Or will it fall down, like its neighbors Larsen A and B? Will the glaciers behind the ice shelf speed up and have a direct contribution to sea level rise?’ I think answers may be not that terrible.”
Ice shelves, which border 75% of the Antarctic Peninsula, form from snow that became ice thousands of years ago. They are found where glaciers meet the ocean and the weather is cold enough to keep the ice frozen. The icy structures are natural barriers against the water melting from glaciers, which can lead to rising sea levels.
The Larsen Ice Shelf once consists of four parts: Larsen A (the smallest), Larsen B, Larsen C (the largest) and Larsen D. While scientists will continue to monitor A-68 and its parent, many believe it'll take several years before Larsen C breaks down further. “The remaining 90% of the ice shelf continues to be held in place by two points,” said Chris Shuman, a glaciologist. “So I just don't see any signs that this event will lead to the falling down of the Larsen C Ice Shelf. But we will be watching closely for signs of further changes.”
32. Why did A-68 iceberg separation become a heated topic?
A. Its effect was terrible. B. It was about global warming.
C. Its size was very huge. D. It means a glacier's life cycle.
33. What is Kelly Brunt's attitude towards the A-68 iceberg separation?
A. Positive. B. Doubtful. C. Uninterested. D. Worried.
34. Why are icy structures so important according to Paragraph 4?
A. They help keep the weather cool. B. They help control the sea levels.
C. They make water turn into the glaciers. D. They are necessary for scientists' research.
35. Chris Shuman thought that the A-68 iceberg separation would________________.
A. influence the wildlife there B. never change the icy structures
C. cause many further changes D. have little influence on Larsen C Ice Shelf

Dear Henry,
How are you doing these days? I'm writing to tell you the Chinese Ancient Poetry Contest held in our school last Friday.
To keep traditional Chinese culture alive, our school organized the Chinese Ancient Poetry Contest. 30 competitors in total were selected to compete in the contest held in the school lecture hall. The competitors were asked to give the titles of the poems or complete the poems according to the given lines. Luckily, I got the first prize, which made me very proud.
I think this activity is a good way to help students to appreciate the charm of traditional Chinese culture. Therefore, we are looking forward to joining in the contest next year.
Yours,
Li Hua
