I received a private message on Facebook. It began harmlessly enough: “Hey, girl. Wanted to invite you to join my next challenge group—we’ll be focusing on fitting in 30 minutes of exercise and balanced nutrition.”
It was all becoming too much. Facebook was running my life, not me.
But what killed Facebook for me was when I posted a photo, and five minutes later my son asked me how many “likes” it had got. His question was a wake-up call.
“Likes” are signs of acceptance and approval. I had forgotten that acceptance and approval need to come from within and had unknowingly set him a bad example.
Before Facebook, surfing the internet was an occasional distraction and I spent a lot more time reading books and magazines. I checked in with friends through texts, emails and phone calls.
To recreate the simplicity of those days and set a healthier example to my son, I deactivated my Facebook account.
I’d been in the habit of checking Facebook many times a day, so I had to come up with some new habits. I carried a novel and a crossword puzzle book around with me. I rediscovered knitting. I started taking yoga classes.
I started to remember a few things. My body is fine just the way it is. I have friends who will help me out when I’m in trouble, and I will help them out. I do my best to be a good mother, and our son is happy and healthy. We are very lucky to be able to afford two vacations a year.
I stopped looking at the world through my cellphone. I felt completely present in the moment.
The break left me feeling better about myself, my family, my home and my life.
After a few weeks, I returned to Facebook. Now I look at the photos of my friends’ kids growing up and treasure how social media allows me to keep in touch with family far and wide. I look in on a daily basis, but no longer with the desire constantly to post updates.
It is not an addiction any more.

Doctors in hospital emergency rooms often see accidental poisonings. A frightened parent arrives with a child who swallowed a cleaning liquid. Or perhaps the harmful substance is a medicine. Or it might be a chemical product meant to kill insects. These are common causes of accidental poisoning.
In cases like this, seek medical help as soon as possible. Save the container of whatever caused the poisoning. And look on the container for information about anything that stops the effects of the poison. Save anything expelled from the mouth of the victim. That way, doctors can examine it.
Millions of people know a way to save a person who is choking on something trapped in the throat. The method is commonly known as the Heimlich Maneuver or abdominal thrusts(腹部按压), which you can do by getting directly behind a sitting or standing person. Put your arms around the victim’s waist. Close one hand to form a ball. Place it over the upper part of the stomach, below the ribs. Place the other hand on top. Then push forcefully inward and upward. Repeat the abdominal thrusts until the object is expelled from the mouth. For someone who is pregnant or very fat, place your hands a little higher than with normal abdominal thrusts.
Red Cross experts say taking these steps can save many lives. But they also warn that abdominal thrusts are not for people who have almost drowned. They say use of the method could delay other ways to re-start breathing in the victim. Abdominal thrusts should be used only in cases where a near-drowning victim is choking on an object.
To learn more about first aid, ask a hospital or organization like a Red Cross or Red Crescent Society for information. There may be training classes offered in your area.

A. A harmful medicine B. A cleaning liquid
C. Poisonous insects D. Dangerous pesticide(杀虫剂)
29.The underlined word “expelled” can be replaced by “ ”.
A. coming out B. taking up C. going away D. getting down
30.Why abdominal thrusts are not for people who have almost drowned?
A. Because people are unwilling to attempt rescue efforts
B. Because it is hard to perform
C. Because it is no need to do so
D. Because it could hold up other ways to re-start breathing in the victim
31.What is the author’s purpose in writing this text?
A. To promote medical research
B. To share some knowledge about first aid
C. To show how to perform abdominal thrusts
D. To help people deal with accidental poisoning

It hurts to keep secrets. Keeping something secret is associated with lower well-being, worse health, and less satisfying relationships. Research has linked secret-keeping to increased anxiety, depression, symptoms of poor health, and even the more rapid progression of disease. There is a seemingly obvious explanation for these harms: Hiding secrets is hard work.
New research, however, suggests that the harm of secrets doesn’t really come from the hiding after all. The real problem with keeping a secret is not that you have to hide it, but that you have to live with it, and think about it.
The concept of secrecy might evoke(唤起) an image of two people in conversation, with one person actively hiding from the other. Yet, such hiding is actually uncommon. It is our tendency to mind-wander to our secrets that seems most harmful to well-being. Simply thinking about a secret can make us feel unreal. Having a secret return to mind, time and time again, can be tiring. When we think of a secret, it can make us feel isolated and alone.
To better understand the harms of secrecy, my colleagues and I first set out to understand what secrets people keep, and how often they keep them. We found that 97 percent of people have at least one secret at any given moment, and people have, on average, 13 secrets. A survey of more than 5,000 people found that common secrets include preferences, desires, issues surrounding relationships, cheating and violations of others’ trust.
Across several studies, we asked participants to assess how frequently they hid their secret during conversations with others, and also how frequently they thought about the secret outside of social communications. We found that the more frequently people simply thought about their secrets, the lower their well-being. The frequency of active hiding when communicating with others, however, had no relationship to well-being.
Following up this research, a new paper shows why thinking about secrets is so harmful. Turning the question around, we examined the consequences of telling secrets. We found that when a person tells a secret to a third party, it does not reduce how often they have to hide the secret from others who are still kept in the dark. Rather, it reduces how often their mind wanders toward the secret in irrelevant moments.
32.According to the passage, which of the following is really harmful?
A.Hiding the secrets from others. B.Assessing the frequency of hiding secrets.
C.Always keeping the secrets in mind. D.Telling a third party the secrets.
33.How did the author do the research with his colleagues?
A.By doing experiments themselves. B.By analyzing the participants’ replies.
C.By comparing the participants. D.By analyzing some samples.
34.In the passage, the author mainly intends to tell us .
A.why the secrets we keep are hurting us
B.how we should keep the secrets properly
C.whether we should hide the secrets from others
D.what leads to our healthy problems
35.What will probably be talked about in the next paragraph of the passage?
A.The proper ways that we can hide the secrets from others.
B.The correct ways that we can solve our healthy problems successfully in our daily life.
C.The main reasons why we should think more about the secrets.
D.The detailed reasons why telling a secret to a third person can make our mind healthier.
