Recently, scientists have made a map of the eye colours of people in Britain. They’ve found out that blue is now the most common eye colour there.
The scientists say thousands of years ago, nearly all British people‘s eyes were brown. Today, 48% of British people have blue eyes,30% of British people have green eyes and the rest have brown eyes.
According to the map, in the area around Edinburgh in Scotland most people have blue eyes. Over half (57%) of people living in and around Edinburgh are blue-eyed people.The south-west of England has the fewest blue-eyed peolpe. Only 35% of people living there have blue eyes.
Though people still don’t know why some places of Britain have a lot of blue--eyed people, the number of people with blue eyes is increasing. Alistair Moffat, one of the scientists, says that’s because most people consider the people with blue eyes to be more beautiful. This means blue-eyed people have more chances to find a mate and get married. Alistair Moffat compares blue eyes to the tail of a peacock and he says that a more colourful tail can help a peacock get more mates.
