?My Favourite Books
??? Jo Usmar is a writer for Cosmopolitan and co-author of the This Book Will series(系列) of lifestyle books. Here she picks her top reads.
Matilda
Roald Dahl
????I once wrote a paper on the influence of fairy tales on Roald Dahl抯 writing and it gave me a new appreciation for his strange and delightful words. Matilda抯 battles with her cruel parents and the bossy headmistress, Miss Trunchbull, are equally funny and frightening, but they're also aspirational.
After Dark
Haruki Murakami
牋牋It抯 about two sister桬ri, a model who either won抰 or can抰 stop sleeping, and Mari, a young student. In trying to connect to her sister, Mari starts changing her life and discovers a world of diverse 搉ight people who are hiding secrets.
Gone Girl
Gillian Fynn
牋牋There was a bit of me that didn抰 want to love this when everyone else on the planet did, but the horror story is brilliant. There抯 tension and anxiety from the beginning as Nick and Amy battle for your trust. It抯 a real whodunit and the frustration when you realize what抯 going on is horribly enjoyable.
The Stand
Stephen King
牋牋This is an excellent fantasy novel from one of the best storytellers around. After a serious flu outbreak wipes out 99.4% of the world抯 population, a battle unfolds between good and evil among those left. Randall Flagg is one of the scariest characters ever.

By the time he arrived, the thief was no longer there, but Holets spotted a woman in a grassy area behind the store about to inject a needle into her companion抯 arm. The woman, Crystal Champ, was eight months pregnant.
牋 After a short conversation, he learned Champ longed for her child to go to a good family. Holets offered to do just that.
牋 When Sergeant Jim Edison learned what Holets did, he was floored. In his 10 years as a police officer, he has seen many 揾eroic acts but none like what Holets did, Edison said.
牋 Edison awarded Holets for his outstanding service for the city, but felt that wasn抰 enough. It抯 his job to reward his officers and encourage them to do the right thing, so Edison signed Holets up to do an interview for CNN抯 揃eyond the Call of Duty攕eries without telling him.
牋 Every day Edison calls me to ask for forgiveness. Holets said laughing, 揂nd I keep assuring him that we're fine. We didn抰 quite realize it would get this response, and neither did he. But we all realize it抯 a really good thing, and some really good things can come of it.
牋 One of Holets抯 conditions when he agreed to CNN抯 interview was that his superiors would not set up a GoFundMe page for his family. 揥e don抰 want anybody to say we've used this occasion to enrich ourselves, Holets said. He instead urges those who want to offer support to donate to a local drug recovery center or adoption organization.

The meaning of silence varies among cultural groups. Silences may be thoughtful,or they may be empty when a person has nothing to say. A silence in a conversation may also show stubbornness, uneasiness, or worry. Silence may be viewed by some cultural groups as extremely uncomfortable; therefore attempts may be made to fill every gap (间隙) with conversation. Persons in other cultural groups value silence and view it as necessary for understanding a person抯 needs.
Many Native Americans value silence and feel it is a basic part of communicating among people, just as some traditional Chinese and Thai persons do. Therefore, when a person from one of these cultures is speaking and suddenly stops, what may be implied (暗示) is that the person wants the listener to consider what has been said before continuing. In these cultures, silence is a call for reflection.
? ? Other cultures may use silence in other ways, particularly when dealing with conflicts among people or in relationships of people with different amounts of power. For example, Russian, French and Spanish persons may use silence to show agreement between parties about the topic under discussion. However, Mexicans may use silence when instructions are given by a person in authority rather than be rude to that person by arguing with him or her.In still another use, persons in Asian cultures may view silence as a sign of respect, particularly to an elder or a person in authority.
Nurses and other care-givers need to be aware of the possible meanings of silence when they come across the personal anxiety their patients may be experiencing. Nurses should recognize their own personal and cultural construction of silence so that a patien抯 silence is not interrupted too early or allowed to go on unnecessarily. A nurse who understands the healing (治愈) value of silence can use this understanding to assist in the care of patients from their own and from other cultures.
What does the author say about silence in conversations?
A. It implies anger. B. It promotes friendship.
C. It is culture-specific. D. It is content-based.
29. Which of the following people might regard silence as a call for careful thought?
A. The Chinese. B. The French. C. The Mexicans. D. The Russians.
30. What does the author advise nurses to do about silence?
A. Let it continue as the patient pleases. B. Break it while treating patients.
C. Evaluate its harm to patients. D. Make use of its healing effects.
31. What may be the best title for the text?
A. Sound and Silence
B. What It Means to Be Silent
C. Silence to Native Americans
D. Speech Is Silver; Silence Is Gold
D
牋 As more and more people speak the global languages of English, Chinese, Spanish, and Arabic, other languages are rapidly disappearing. In fact, half of the 6,0007,000 languages spoken around the world today will likely die out by the next century, according to the United Nations Educational, Scientific, and Cultural Organization (UNESCO).
In an effort to prevent language loss, scholars from a number of organizations ---- UNESCO and National Geographic among them ---- have for many years been documenting dying languages and the cultures they reflect.
牋 Mark Turin, a scientist at the Macmillan Center , Yale University , who specializes in the languages and oral traditions of the Himalayas , is following in that tradition. His recently published book, A grammar of Thangmi with an Ethnolinguistic Introduction to the Speakers and Their Culture, grows out of his experience living, working, and raising a family in a village in Nepal .
牋牋Documenting the Thangmi language and culture is just a starting point for Turin , who seeks to include other languages and oral traditions across the Himalayan reaches of India , Nepal , Bhutan , and China . But he is not content to simply record these voices before they disappear without record.
牋牋At the University of Cambridge Turin discovered a wealth of important materials ---- including photographs, films, tape recordings, and field notes ---- which had remained unstudied and were badly in need of care and protection.
牋牋Now, through the two organizations that he has founded ---- the Digital Himalaya Project and the World Oral Literature Project ---- Turin has started a campaign to make such documents, found in libraries and stores around the world, available not just to scholars but to the younger generations of communities from whom the materials were originally collected. Thanks to digital technology and the widely available Internet, Turin notes, the endangered languages can be saved and reconnected with speech communities.
Many scholars are making efforts to 牋牋牋 __.
A. promote global language
B. rescue disappearing languages
C. search for language communities
D. set up language research organizations
33. What does 搕hat tradition in Paragraph 3 refer to?
A. Having full records of the languages.
B. Writing books on language teaching.
C. Telling stories about language users.
D. Living with the native speakers.
34. What is Turin抯 book based on?
A. The cultural studies in India.
B. The documents available at Yale.
C. His language research in Bhutan.
D. His personal experience in Nepal.
35. Which of the following best describes Turin抯 work?
A. Write, sell and donate. B. Record, repair and reward.

In this day and age, having solid English skills is a must. But if you’ve been learning for a while and don’t find yourself communicating with ease, how do you get around learning slump?
Find native English speakers. In certain areas hardest thing to do, but it抯 the best use of your time. Talking to actual native speakers is the most effective way to improve your English skills, speaking or otherwise. (36) .
Watch people.Watch how their mouths form the words. Watch how emotion is communicated. Watch where emphasis goes on certain sentences and how that provides context. 牋 (37) , take notice of the humor and the feelings, and the formality they employ.
Slow down.Above all, if you want to be understood, slow down.牋 (38) . It抯 tempting to get nervous and want to speed up to get it all over with, but you can抰 do that! Clarity is the key--for some native English speakers, too
Speak English at home. Talk to yourself in English. Narrate your actions. While you抮e washing dishes, say what you抮e doing, thinking, or feeling. (39) , but it keeps your brain thinking in English before your first language. Once you can do that, the rest is just keeping it up.
Create opportunities. 牋 (40) . That抯 the lazy way of looking at it! English speakers are everywhere, and you have to come to them. Call an English hotline. Call up Nike and ask about their sneakers. Start a blog. There are always opportunities to be had.
It sounds a little silly if you get caught
Apart from just understanding their words
In addition to imitating the gestures they use
They will be patient with you―don’t worry
Your progress will be faster this way than any other
It’s easy to complain you’ll never be exposed to an authentic language environment
G. The more clearly you speak, the better chance your listener has of understanding you.

第二节 (满分25分)

It was a moral lesson on Tuesday afternoon. Jodie hadn’t really heard anything, maybe a whisper (低语),
but when she turned around, the girls in the back row of the class were looking at her, trying to hide smiles. Mr Smith was talking about people’s jobs. He also wanted to find out what his students wanted to do when they grew up. He called on Billy Mitzer first.
? “My daddy works in a bank,” Billy Mitzer said. “I want to work in a bank too. There’s lots of money in the bank.” “My parents have a grocery store,” Emmy Disalvo said. “But I want to be an airline pilot.”
Jodie liked it when Mr Smith asked them questions like this. Mr Smith was about to call on Jodie when the girls in the back row started laughing. Shirley Danes shouted, “Jodie’s daddy is a garbage man!”
Everybody in the class laughed out loud except Jodie. She felt embarrassed and her face turned bright red. She looked around the whole classroom. Everyone was laughing. Some kids were even holding their noses.
? Mr Smith was angry. He seldom raised his voice, but at that time he did. “Silence! I want everybody to be quiet,” he shouted. The laughter stopped immediately. The sound of cars and people going by on the street came through the windows. “You should feel sorry for yourselves,” Mr Smith said. “Being a garbage man is a difficult and greatly useful job. We should be grateful to Jodie’s father. Where would we be without him?”
????A few kids started laughing again. “It’s not funny,” Mr Smith went on. “Garbage is a serious matter. I think you all should say sorry to Jodie. And after that, you’re all going to write Jodie's father a nice letter to tell him how much you appreciate what he does for all of us—in other words, keeping our city clean.”
????Paragraph 1:
????Everyone did as Mr Smith asked them to. ___________ ______________________
????Paragraph 2:

Paragraph 1: Everyone did as Mr Smith asked them to. They all said "Sorry, Jodie", but Jodie could tell they didn't really mean it. She also knew nobody wanted to write her father a nice letter. She wished Mr Smith hadn't made them do it. Her face was burning red and she felt like crying. Mr Smith came to her desk and patted her shoulder, saying "Let's go out in the hall while everyone is writing those letters, so we can have a private talk."?Jodie followed him out to the hall.
Paragraph?2:?Jodie started crying out. She was embarrassed. She didn't want to cry in front of everybody, but she couldn't hold back her tears any more. Mr Smith was tall. He knelt and gave her his handkerchief. "I'm sorry that this happened," he said. "But remember, hard work done well is something to be proud of. We all should be grateful to garbage men." The teacher's words cheered Jodie up, and she felt proud of her father.
