本单元标题是伟大的科学家。所以活动的设置为让学生说出自己熟知的科学家姓名、其发明、工作、生活的情况。任务简单,学生感兴趣。然后教师通过多媒体呈现相关科学家及其成就的图片和文字。既能让学生体会到本堂课的主题,又能激发学生的好奇心和求知欲,营造一种宽松和活跃的课题氛围,为下一步教学做了很好的铺垫。
task1. Name some famous scientists you know and tell something about them.
Charles Darwin---He was British. He wrote the Origin of Species.
Thomas Edison---He was an American inventor. He invented electric light.
Stephen Hawking---He is a British. He studied black holes of space.
Step 2. Reading
Task 1: Look at the title of the passage. Do you know the scientist John Snow? What was he famous for? What do you know about “King Cholera”?
设计意图:强调学生要注意根据标题来猜测文章主要大意的阅读技巧并补充一些有关霍乱和“John Snow”的背景知识,使学生能够更好的理解全篇文章。
Background introduction to John Snow
John Snow (1813-1858) was born and worked as a doctor in Great Britain. He was originally an anesthetist(麻醉师).He was so famous that he became the doctor for Queen Victoria at the births of her many children. Four outbreaks of cholera in the 1830s and 1840s killed many people in England. In 1854, the most terrible outbreak of cholera which ever occurred in the kingdom began. It was so violent and sudden that 127people died in the first three days.
Some knowledge about Cholera
Cholera is the illness caused by a bacterium called Varian cholera. If it infects people’s intestines(肠胃), it may cause diarrhea(腹泻), vomiting (呕吐) and cramps(腹痛). The most common cause of cholera is by eating food or drinking water that has been polluted by the bacteria. Cholera can be mild(不严重的) or even without symptoms(症状), but without immediate treatment a severe case can lead to death.
Task 2: Skimming
Reading the passage quickly and answer the question.
1. What’s the main idea of the passage?
A. John Snow was a well-known doctor in London.
B. The cause of Cholera was polluted water.
C. The source of all drinking water should be examined.
D. How John Snow collected, analyzed data and found the cause of
the disease and solved it .
