How to arrive The national airline is Sri Lankan Airlines, which flies from Colombo to London and a couple of other European cities. The country’s main airport is Colombo Bandaranaike, located 29km north of the capital city. Why now The best time to visit Sri Lanka’s southern beaches is from November to April. So by going early in the season, you’ll get the best weather. Also in November, Deepavali, known as “Diwali” or the “Festival of Lights”, is Sri Lanka’s main religious festival, celebrated throughout the country. What to see There is plenty to see in Sri Lanka. So far, scientists have named about 1.8 million living species (物种), and that’s just a small part of what probably exists on Earth. With so many plants, animals, fungi, and other organisms covering the planet, it can be tough to figure out what type of spider is crawling up your leg or what kind of bird just flew by.
A soon-to-be-launched Website might help. An international team of researchers has announced the creation of a Web-based Encyclopedia of Life (EOL). The project aims to catalogue (编入目录) every species on Earth in a single, easy-to-use reference guide.
To get the encyclopedia started, the creators will use information from scientific databases that already exist. And eventually, in special sections of the site, nonscientists with specialized knowledge will join. Gardeners, for example, will be able to record the dates that their flowers first bloom each year. Bird-watchers will be able to input which birds they’ve seen and where. The technology for this kind of tool has only recently become available.
As the EOL develops, you might find it useful for school projects. The site will have special pages for kids who are studying ecosystems in their neighborhood. To make sure the encyclopedia (百科全书) is accurate, scientists will review much of the information added to it. People who visit the site will be able to choose to skip pages that haven’t been reviewed.
Another convenient characteristic of the EOL is that you’ll be able to pick the level of detail you see to match your interests, age, and current knowledge. If you wanted to learn about polar bears for a science class report, for example, you could use the “novice” setting to get basic information about the animals. On the “expert” setting, on the other hand, you could get much more detailed information about the history, literature, and exploration of polar bears.
It now takes years for scientists to collect all the data they need to describe and analyze species. The creators of the Encyclopedia of Life hope that their new tool will speed that process.
Keep an eye on www.eol.org.Pages will begin to go up sometime next year, and you might find them useful for your school reports. The EOL team might have the basics for all 1.8 million entries online as early as 2017. Someday, you might add your own notes.

Some people believe that international sport creates goodwill (友好) between the nations and that if countries play games together they will learn to live together. Others say that the opposite is true: that international contests encourage false national pride and lead to misunderstanding and hatred. There is probably some truth in both arguments, but in recent years the Olympic Games have done little to support the view that sports encourage international brotherhood. Not only was there the incident of tragedy involving murder of athletes, but the Games was also ruined by lesser incidents caused principally by minor national contests.
One country received its second-place medals with visible anger after the hockey final. There had been noisy scenes at the end of the hockey match, the losers objecting to the final decisions. They were convinced that one of their goals should not have been disallowed and that their opponents’ victory was unfair. Their manager was in a rage when he said, “This isn’t hockey. Hockey and the International Hockey Federation are finished.” The president of the Federation said later that such behavior could result in the suspension (禁赛) of the team for at least 3 years.
The American basketball team announced that they would not yield first place to Russia, after a disputable end to their contest. The game had ended in disorder. It was thought at first that the United States had won by a single point, but it was announced that there were three seconds still to play. A Russian player then threw the ball from one end of the court to the other, and another player popped it into the basket. It was the first time the US had ever lost an Olympic basketball match. An appeal jury (评审委员会) debated the matter for four hours and a half before announcing the result would stand. The US players then voted not to receive the silver medals.
Incidents of this kind will continue as long as sport is played competitively rather than for the love of the game. The suggestion that athletes should compete as individuals or in non-national teams, might be too much to hope for. But in present organization of Olympics there is far too much that encourages aggressive patriotism (爱国主义).
50. The author thinks that in recent years Olympic Games have _____.
A. created goodwill between the nations
B. showed little international friendship
C. created only misunderstanding and hatred
D. greatly encouraged international brotherhood
51. What did the manager mean by saying the underlined sentence (Paragraph 2)
A. This is not a standard hockey match.
B. His team would not enter the game in three years.
C. The unfair decision ruined both hockey and the Federation.
D. The federation would not exist any longer after this match was over.
52. The example basketball match in the passage showed that _____.
A. aggressive patriotism was displayed in the incident
B. the American team should have taken the first place
C. the appeal jury was too inefficient in making a decision
D. the Russian team shouldn't have taken advantage of the last three seconds
53. The author gives two examples in the 2nd and the 3rd paragraphs in order to show that _____.
A. contests often end in disorder
B. unfair decisions are common in sports
C. no contests are fair in Olympic Games
D. competition discourages international friendship
54. Which of the following statements best summarizes this passage
A. Athletes should compete as individuals.
B. The organization of the Olympic Games must be improved.
C. Any team that has disrespectful behavior should be suspended.
D. Different teams often have disputes when fighting for the gold medal.

Old Behrman was a painter who lived on the ground floor of the apartment building. Behrman was a failure in art. For years, he had always been planning to paint a work of art, but had never yet begun it. He earned a little money by serving as a model to artists who could not pay for a professional model. He was a fierce, little, old man who protected the two young women in the studio apartment above him.
Sue found Behrman in his room. In one area was a blank canvas (画布) that had been waiting 25 years for the first line of paint. Sue told him about Johnsy and how she feared that her friend would float away like a leaf on the old ivy vine climbing hopelessly up the outside block wall.
Old Behrman was angered at the idea. “Are there people in the world with the foolishness to die because leaves drop off a vine Why do you let that silly business come in her brain ”
“She is very sick and weak and the disease has left her mind full of strange ideas,” said Sue.
“This is not any place in which one so good as Miss Johnsy shall lie sick,” yelled Behrman. “Some day I will paint a masterpiece, and we shall all go away.”
Johnsy was sleeping when they went upstairs. Sue pulled the shade down to cover the window. She and Behrman went into the other room. They looked out of a window fearfully at the ivy vine. Then they looked at each other without speaking. A cold rain was falling, mixed with snow. Behrman sat and posed as the miner.
The next morning, Sue awoke after an hour’s sleep. She found Johnsy with wide-open eyes staring at the covered window.
“Pull up the shade; I want to see,” she ordered, quietly. Sue obeyed.
After the beating rain and fierce wind that blew through the night, there yet stood against the wall one ivy leaf. It was the last one on the vine. It was still dark green at the center. But its edges were colored with the yellow. It hung bravely from the branch about 7 meters above the ground.
“It is the last one,” said Johnsy. “I thought it would surely fall during the night. I heard the wind. It will fall today and I shall die at the same time.”
“Dear, dear!” said Sue, leaning her worn face down toward the bed. “Think of me, if you won’t think of yourself. What would I do ”
But Johnsy did not answer.
The next morning, when it was light, Johnsy demanded that the window shade be raised. The ivy leaf was still there. Johnsy lay for a long time, looking at it. And then she called to Sue, who was preparing chicken soup.
“I’ve been a bad girl,” said Johnsy, “Something has made that last leaf stay there to show me how bad I was. It is wrong to want to die. You may bring me a little soup now.”
An hour later she said, “Someday I hope to paint the Bay of Naples.”
Later in the day, the doctor came, and Sue talked to him in the hallway.
“Even chances. With good care, you’ll win,” said the doctor. “And now I must see another case I have in your building. Behrman, his name is some kind of an artist, I believe. Pneumonia (肺炎), too. He is an old, weak man and his case is severe. There is no hope for him; but he goes to the hospital today to ease his pain.”
The next day, the doctor said to Sue, “She’s out of danger. You won. Nutrition and care now—that’s all.”
Later that day, Sue came to the bed where Johnsy lay, and put one arm around her.
“I have something to tell you, white mouse,” she said. “Mister Behrman died of pneumonia today in the hospital. He was sick only two days. They found him the morning of the first day in his room downstairs helpless with pain. His shoes and clothing were completely wet and icy cold. They could not imagine where he had been on such a terrible night.
And then they found a lantern, still lighted. And they found a ladder that had been moved from its place. And art supplies and a painting board with green and yellow colors mixed on it.
And look out the window, dear, at the last ivy leaf on the wall. Didn’t you wonder why it never moved when the wind blew Ah, darling, it is Behrman’s masterpiece—he painted it there the night that the last leaf fell.”
55. Which detail in the passage suggests that Behrman was a failure
A. He worked as a miner to make ends meet.

C. His drawing board had waited 25years to receive the first line of his masterpiece

Top of the cropsYou might think Fashion Week is about dresses rather than hairstyles. But you’d be wrong. Whether the models are in New York, London or Milan, who’s sporting the prettiest, trendiest or most shocking hairstyle is as hot a topic as the clothes on the catwalk. Despite the many hair highlights of the 2010 Fashion Week, we’ve managed to comb through the masses of material to pick a few of our favorites here.
