阅读下列短文,从每题所给的四个选项(A、B、C和D)中选出最佳选项。

Although it may seem like a new idea, the net has actually been around for over 40 years. It all began in the U.S. during the Cold War, as an experiment in military communication. By linking lots of computers together in a network, rather than in a straight line, the Pentagon(五角大楼) thought that in the event of a nuclear attack to the U.S. it was unlikely that the entire network would be damaged, and therefore they would still be able to send and receive information.
At first, each computer was physically linked by cable to the next computer, but this way has obvious limitations, which led to the development of networks using the telephone system. When some people found a nuclear strike, they could talk to each other using this computer network, and some university students started using this network to do their homework together.
It seems a natural human characteristic to want to communicate. Once people realized that they could talk to other people through this computer network, they began to demand access, although initially the users were only from the university and government. But more and more people could see the potential of computer networks, and various community groups developed networks separate from the official networks for the use of their local communities.
The sum of all these various local, regional and national networks is the Internet as we experience today, an ever expanding network of people, computers and information coming together in ways the Pentagon never dreamed of 40 years ago. So what began as an exercise in military communication has become a method of global communication.

We asked each of our 4000 respondents to select among a list of 17 common Internet activities and tell us which they did or did not do. This is what we found:
E-mail is by far the most common Internet activity, with 90% of all Internet users claiming to be e-mailers.
The Internet today is a large public library with an obviously commercial tendency. The most widespread use of the Internet today is as an information search function for products, travel, hobbies and general information. Actually all users interviewed responded that they engaged in one or more of these information gathering activities.
Over a third of all Internet users report using the Web to engage in entertainment such as computer games (such as online chess, role games, and the like). Thus, the current Internet is also considered to have an entertainment function.
Chat rooms are for the young and the anonymous. While a quarter of Internet users claim to have used chat rooms, this activity substantially decreases after age 25. And the chatters report that the overwhelming portion of their chat room interaction is with the anonymous whose identities remain unknown.
Consumer to Business activity — purchasing, stock trading, online auctions and e-banking —are engaged in by much smaller parts of Internet users, with only a quarter reporting they make purchases online and under fifteen percent doing any of the other activities. Despite all of the sound, the commercial online activities are but in their earliest stages.

When I started riding a bike a couple of years ago, I didn’t think my involvement would be more serious than the occasional short ride. But as I built strength, my friends encouraged me to step up my training and try some longer trips. The first one was a 150-mile trek(长途跋涉), and the MS-150, an annual event that raises money to fight multiple sclerosis(多发性硬化).
When I entered for it, the idea seemed terrific — support a worthy cause while going for the distance — but I trained with enthusiasm. But as the time for the ride approached, my self-doubts came. I still wanted to raise money for the charity, but I didn’t really want to bike all those miles for two days.
The ride began on a beautiful Sunday morning in the quiet Georgia countryside, and for the first few hours I felt wonderful. This was just the experience I had imagined, and my spirits were high. But by the end of the day, I felt tired and bored. I wanted to give up.
As I arrived at the top of a hill, the beautiful sunset kept me from going for a few minutes more. Then in the distance, I saw a rider riding very slowly. I noticed that the person looked different in some way, but I couldn’t tell why. So I pushed myself to catch up. She was, riding slowly but steadily, with a slight and determined smile on her face — and she had only one leg.
For a whole day I’d been doubting my body. But now I knew — it wasn’t the body, but the will that would help me reach my goal.
It rained all the second day. I never saw the one-legged rider again, but I pushed on without complaining, knowing she was there with me somewhere. And at the end of the day, still feeling strong, I completed the 150th mile.

A. once a year B. when the author was a child
C. when the author was an adult D. once a couple of years
63. Which of the following statements is TRUE according to the passage?

B. The event of the 150-mile trek would last two days.
C. The author at last beat the other competitors and won the game.
D. The one-legged rider didn’t finish her race because of tiredness.
64. What can be inferred from the passage?
A. The author’s friends encouraged him to make money by riding professionally.
B. The author felt proud at the very beginning of training for the trek.
C. The author had intended to give up as the result of the bad weather.
D. The author was accompanied by the one-legged biker all the way.
65. What’s the best title for the passage?

Some kids can’t sit still for long. They have a hard time paying attention to just one thing. They’re easily distracted. They can get very impatient. They hate standing in line or waiting for their turn in a game or activity. They get bored pretty fast. They say the first thing that comes to mind or interrupt someone else who’s talking.
For certain kids, this problem is so severe that doctors have a name ADHD (attention deficit hyperactivity disorder) for it. Perhaps as many as one out of every twenty kids under the age of 18 have characteristics of ADHD. Often, these kids have trouble getting through school and face other difficulties later in life.
Rizzo started developing the Virtual Classroom in 1999. He wanted to see if he could use it as a tool for testing and treating kids who have attention disorders.
To diagnose(诊断) ADHD, doctors typically test patients by giving them tasks that require attention. As part of one test, you watch letters appearing on a computer screen. Every time you see the letter “A” followed by the letter “X,” you have to press the space bar. If you’re paying close attention, you’ll register all the times this combination occurs. If not, you’ll miss some.
The Virtual Classroom makes these tests more efficient, Rizzo says. In one experiment, he gave a group of kids the “A-X” test. Instead of looking at a computer screen in a doctor’s office, though, the kids wore headsets that made it look like they were taking the test in a classroom.
“Basically what we found,” Rizzo says, “is that, in 20 minutes of testing with virtual reality, we got the same finding that usually requires a couple hours of standard test with computer screens in the psychologist’s office.”

The Internet
The Internet has become more and more popular with us. It brings much convenience to our studies and lives, but every coin has two sides — it also has some bad effects on us. The Internet can offer much information rapidly and conveniently, allow people to communication online, and help people study at online schools. However, the real connection between people has decreased. And many students show great interest in the net games, which has bad effects on their studies. Therefore, we should take advantage of the good aspects of the Internet to study and develop our society, and try to avoid its bad effects at the same time.
