(Module 3 Heroes)
重点:one of, stop doing, give up, on one’s own, die of
She is my hero because she is one of the best players in the world.
Beijing is one of the largest cities in the world.
She is one of the tallest girls in our class.
Suzhou is one of the most beautiful cities in our country.
2. stop doing sth.
She stopped playing when she was twenty-four.
stop doing sth.强调停止做某件事,而stop to do sth.
Let’s stop talking. Let’s stop to talk.
try to do和try doing forget to do和forget doing
remember to do和remember doing
1. Don’t forget _______________ (close) the windows when you are leaving.
2. The doctors are trying ________________ (save) the boy’s life.
3. Why not try ________________ (listen) to some music, it can make you feel relaxed.
4. I remember ________________ (see) you somewhere before.
5. Stop _______________ (talk)! The teacher is coming!
答案:to close, to save, listening, seeing, talking
3. give up
放弃
Whatever she does, she never gives up.
give up中的up是副词
I give up, please tell me the answer.
可以构成词组“give something up”或“give somebody up”。
I will not give you up.
She didn’t give up her job.
You should give up smoking.
You should not give up easily.
4. on his own
他自己
He had to work very hard on his own.
This is his own car.
He owns this car.
He solved this problem on his own.
He solved this problem by himself.
5. die of
In the end, he died of his wound.
The old man died of cancer.
There are many people who die from accidents every year.
请用die of和die from填空:
She __________ the flu(流感).
This is the poor boy whose parents __________ the car accident.
答案:died of, died from
1. He is one of the cleverest boys in our class and he can learn a lot of new things on his own. 2. We should never give up, never stop trying. 3. He died from car accident.

I was born in Ireland and lived there until I was nineteen years old. I came to New York in 1956. At first, I held several jobs to earn a few dollars. Later, to live a better life, I bought my own taxi car. Till now, I've been in the taxi car business for thirty-five years. I know there is a lot about taxi drivers that is not so good. Because of this, people get the wrong impression(印象) that they are bad.
In fact, taxi drivers are just like other honest people. You can read in the papers almost every week where a taxi driver turns in money or jewels people leave in their cars. One time in Brooklyn, I found a ring in my car. I remembered helping a lady with a lot of bags that day, so I went back to the store where I had dropped her off. It took me almost two days to look for her in order to return the ring. I didn't get as much as “Thank you.” Still, I felt good because I had done what was right.
In all my years of driving a taxi car, I have never had any trouble with the public because I always try to be nice to everyone. I try to be honest toward others. I have been trying this for a long time, and the longer I try, the easier it gets.
I believe honesty is one of the greatest gifts there is. It’s something that makes a man a good guy. This is also my way to live by.

On March 27, Saturday evening, people all over the world once again turned their lights off for an hour to help fight against global climate changes and give the world a brighter future.
For Earth Hour 2010, many best known buildings went dark from 8:30 to 9:30 local time, such as the Eiffel Tower, Big Ben, Sydney's Opera House and Beijing's Forbidden City, etc. Millions of businesses and homes around the world also turned off their lights.
Some 4,000 cities in more than 120 countries volunteered to turn off Saturday to reduce energy consumption(能量消耗). "We have everyone from Casablanca to the camps of Namibia and Tanzania taking part," said Greg Bourne, CEO of WWF (World Wildlife Fund) in Australia, which started Earth Hour.
Earth Hour began in Sydney, Australia, in 2007. In 2008, the event turned into an international one, which has drawn the participation of hundreds of towns and cities worldwide. Now in its fourth year, more and more cities from the world took part in Earth Hour as a show of support for action against global warming.
In a WWF survey suggested after Earth Hour 2009, 80 million U.S. citizens said they had participated, according to Ann. "Earth Hour has always been an event about families and individuals as well," Ann said, "and it's really about Americans and people all over the world standing up and saying climate change is real and we need to do something about it now."
However, Earth Hour's energy-saving influence is limited. But WWF says that Earth Hour's real value is symbolic(象征的).
