Unit 2 When do you use a computer?
1. Analysis of the teaching material
This is the second unit of the seventh module in Students Book 1 published by Foreign Language Teaching and Research Press. The topic of this module is computers. This unit is the reading part about the circumstances of using a computer. There are three students answers. They talk about the place, the time and the things they do on the computer.
2. Analysis of the students
As new students in the middle school, they are still active in learning everything. They抣l show interest in other students situations of using a computer because the topic is related to their life and study. But they will have difficulty in learning some new phrases.
3.Teaching purposes
Through my teaching, my students will be able to:
Knowledge:
1) pronounce and know the meaning of the new words and phrases(share, company, night, Australia, talk to customers, go on the Internet, check the times of trains, make travel plans, buy tickets, search for information, check email)
2) perceive the usage of Wh-questions
3) get to know something about other students situation of using the computer
Skill:
1) comprehend the text by predicting, scanning and guessing the new word
2) comprehend the long sentences with the help of conjunction words
3) compose a discourse by using the conjunctions and logical words to link single sentences
Value:
1) realize the wide use of the computer
2) raise awareness of using the computer properly

Step ⅠPre-reading
1. Get to know me. I’ll introduce myself for them to know something about me. This will make the teacher-student cooperation easier.
2. Guess why I wear glasses. I’ll ask the students to guess why I wear glasses and lead in the topic of the module.
3. Guess some details about my using the computer. I抣l encourage them to go on guessing where, when I use the computer and what I do on it. In this way, new words and phrases will be involved in the context.
4. Read the new words and phrases after me. I抣l lead them to read the new words and phrases to get familiar with them and get ready for the following activities.
5. Check their memory. I抣l use CCQ to check if they understand and remember 搒hare and 搉ight. And I抣l play a game with them to check their memory of the key phrases in order to move the obstacles of new vocabulary.
Step ⅡWhile-reading
1. Read Para. 1 and fill in a table. I’ll ask all the students to read Para. 1 and fill in a table about Jack. After that, I’ll ask them to work in pairs to practice the Wh-questions. Also they抣l be asked to retell the content about Jack to change the key words into a sentences.
2. Jigsaw reading
1) Group A read Para. 2 about Alice & Group B read Para. 3 about Mike and finish their tables respectively.
2) B asks A questions and complete their blank table about Alice , then I抣l check B抯 answers by asking them to give the key words directly.
3) Guess what Australia is and get to know it.
4) A asks B questions and complete their blank table about Mike, then I抣l check A抯 answers by asking them to retell.
5) Realize the importance of using the computer properly
3. Listen and read. I抣l ask them to listen to the tape and pay attention to the pronunciations of new words.
4. Find out the conjunction words. I抣l ask them to find the conjunction words in order to comprehend the long sentence. After that, I抣l ask them to make a similar sentence by using these conjunction words. This will get ready for the interview and report.
Step Ⅲ Post-reading
1. Interview your friend. I’ll ask them to interview their friend about using the computer. They’ll use the Wh-questions to ask and answer. This can help them to use what they learn from the text.
2. Report. They’ll write a report about their partners situation of using the computer. What they have learnt in this class will be involved in their report.
3. Summarize. I抣l do a summary about the content together with the students by using a mind map. It is clearer for them to understand.
4. Assign homework. I抣l ask them to visit the websites I offer to them so that they can use the computer better for their life and study.
