Earthquake rescue robots experienced their final tests in Beijing. Their designers said with these robots, rescuers would be able to buy more time to save lives during an earthquake.
This kind of robot looking like a helicopter is a flying robot. It's about 3 metres long, and it took about 4 years to develop the model. Its main functions (作用) are to collect information from the air, and send goods of up to 30 kilos to people trapped by an earthquake. It has a high-definition 360-degree panoramic (全景的) camera. It can work day and night and is also able to send the latest pictures from the quake area.
Dr. Qi Juntong, a researcher at Chinese Academy of Sciences, said, “The most important feature of this flying robot is that it doesn't need a distant control. We just set the destination information on it, and then it takes off, and lands by itself. It flies as high as 3,000 metres, and as fast as 100 kilometres per hour.”
This robot has a different function—it can change as the environment changes. Its main job is to search for any signs of life in places where human rescuers are unable to go. As well as a detector (探测器) that finds victims and detects poisonous gases, a camera is placed in the 3-metre-long robot, which can work in the dark. Another use for the rescuers is the supply bot. With its 10-metre-long pipe, people who are trapped in the ruins will be able to get supplies including oxygen and liquids.
Experts have said that the robots would enter production and serve as part of the national earthquake rescue team as soon as possible.
1.What does Dr. Qi Juntong think makes this robot mainly different from the others?
A.It has more functions.
B.It has a unique shape.

D.It can work by itself once given the information.
2.What does the underlined word “which” in Paragraph 4 refer to?
A.A camera. B.A detector.
C.A rescuer. D.A supply.
3.What can we learn about this robot from the text?
A.It is carried by the helicopter.
B.It weighs about 30 kilos.
C.It is a machine with a length of 10 metres.
D.It hasn't been put into production so far.
4.What is the text mainly about?
A.What the robot looks like.
B.An introduction to a robot.
C.How the robot is made.
D.Information about earthquakes.

Taiwan officials say a mudslide (泥石流) caused by heavy rains from Typhoon Morakot buried a mountain village in the southern part of the island. The fate of hundreds is unknown.
Rescue helicopters made their way up into the mountains to reach Shiao Lin village, bringing food, water and supplies to those who survived the mudslide. Some have been transported to safety. Leng Chia-yu, a spokesman at Taiwan's disaster response agency, says the fate of an estimated 500 people who live in the village, which was wiped out when the mudslide hit Sunday, is still unclear. Leng says that originally there were 150 buildings in Shiao Lin, but now only one or two are left. He says everything is gone, and officials do not know how many may have been buried. Leng says that while helicopters reached the village Tuesday morning, rain and strong winds made it impossible for them to return in the afternoon.
Landslides have also hit other parts of the island. Swollen (水涨的) rivers have wiped out roads and sucked away houses, hotels and even a school. Disaster officials say that up to Tuesday, the storm has killed 41 people and 62 are missing. Those figures do not include estimates for Shiao Lin.
Chinese state media say Typhoon Morakot caused floods and a mudslide along China's east coast, and affected over eight million people. Hundreds of thousands have been forced to flee their homes as the storm heads north. There was an earthquake this morning. I was working in front of my computer when it hit the city. The quake started with a sudden loud noise. I thought that something heavy in a neighbor's house probably had fallen. However, the walls and the floor began to shake. I finally realized it was an earthquake.
My son Zac, a sixteen-year-old boy, was sleeping with his door locked. Being sixteen, he can sleep through any kind of noise. “Zac!” I shouted. “Are you OK?” But nobody replied. I was a little worried. I couldn't imagine that someone was able to get such a deep sleep. The house was dancing. There were waves in the swimming pool. I was afraid the house would come down. “Zac!” I yelled, knocking on his door with an open palm (手掌). “Zac! Wake up! It's an earthquake! We need to get out!”
My son finally emerged in his underpants. We looked around the room. I knew that we should hide under a table to stop things from falling on us and stay away from glass. Unfortunately, none of our furniture was designed for hiding under. “Should we go into the garden?” Zac asked.
“No, trees could fall on us!” I said. Actually, Zac had done earthquake drills (训练) at school. He must have been told to hide under a desk and cover his head. But we had nothing to cover our heads in the house.
Luckily, before we took any action, the windows stopped moving and the pool calmed down. Everything went back to normal soon. But both my son and I knew what we should do, because we knew if there had been a really big earthquake this morning, we couldn't have escaped from it.
9.When the earthquake started, the author ________.

B.was repairing her computer
C.didn't consider it an earthquake
D.was sleeping with her door locked
10.According to Paragraph 2, why was the author worried?

B.Because she couldn't wake her son up.
C.Because her son was locked in his room.
D.Because she couldn't solve her son's sleep problem.
11.What problem did the author and her son face?
A.They couldn't get out of the house.
B.They couldn't stop things from falling.
C.They couldn't find anything to hide under.
D.They couldn't remember what to do in an earthquake.
12.The author and her son most probably realized they should ________.
A.replace their furniture
B.build a stronger house

__4__ Meteorologists can now track the path a hurricane takes and predict where it is likely to hit days in advance. When Hurricane Isabel swept toward the North Carolina coast in 2003, the National Hurricane Center was able to make forecasts five days ahead, and scientists were off by only one hour in their prediction of where and when Isabel's eye would make landfall. The information collected by the hurricane hunters improves the accuracy of such forecasts by 30 percent. __5__

The scientific study of earthquakes is comparatively new. Until the 18th century, few factual descriptions of earthquakes were recorded, and the natural causes of earthquakes were not well understood.
The earliest earthquake for which we have descriptive information occurred in China in 1177 BC. The Chinese earthquake catalog (目录) describes several dozen large earthquakes in China during the next few thousand years. Earthquakes in Europe were mentioned as early as 580 BC, but the earliest for which we have some descriptive information occurred in the mid-16th century. The earliest known earthquakes in the Americas were in Mexico in the late 14th century and in Peru in 1471, but descriptions of the effects were not well recorded. By the 17th century, descriptions of the effects of earthquakes were being published around the world.
The most widely felt earthquakes in the recorded history of North America were a series that occurred in 1811-1812 near New Madrid, Missouri. A great earthquake, whose magnitude is reported to have been about 8, occurred on the morning of December 16, 1811. Another great earthquake occurred on January 23, 1812, and a third, the strongest yet, on February 7, 1812. Aftershocks (余震) were nearly continuous between these great earthquakes and continued for months afterwards. These earthquakes were felt by people as far away as Boston and Denver. Because the population in these regions was small, the destruction of human life and property was slight.
The San Francisco earthquake of 1906 was one of the most destructive in the recorded history of North America—the earthquake and the fire that followed killed nearly 700 people and left the city in ruins.

Earthquakes happen without warning (前兆). They can happen at any time of a day, at any point during the year. But don't worry because most are so weak that they cannot be felt. Only a few big ones hurt people. However, it's important to know what to do when an earthquake is happening.
Do not go outside. You could get injured from falling glass or parts of buildings. If you are outside, stay away from buildings and power lines (输电线).
Stay under a desk, table, or other strong furniture. Hold on to it. Or stay in a corner of the building. Cover your face and head with your arms and cover your mouth with a towel or clothing. Stay inside until shaking stops and it is safe to go outside.
Keep away from windows, pictures or advertisements on the wall or the buildings, and anything else that could fall and hurt you. Most people get injured by falling things during an earthquake, not by the shaking itself.
Also keep away from a fire. You could fall down and burn yourself in the fire.
If you are driving when an earthquake happens, stop the car if it's safe. Stay inside your car until the earthquake stops, and don't drive near bridges. Try not to stop by power lines or trees. These could fall and hurt you.
1.Most earthquakes are too ________ to hurt people.
A.strong B.weak
C.dangerous D.heavy

A.stay under a big building
B.stay under a strong furniture

B.stay in a corner of the building
C.cover your head with your arms

4.What's the main idea of the passage?
A.How dangerous the earthquake is.
B.How to be safe in an earthquake.
C.We shouldn't be afraid of the earthquake.
D.How the earthquake comes into being.
B
An earthquake happens when two plates rub together. The earth plates travel in different directions and at different speeds. If one plate is slowly forced underneath the other, pressure (压力) builds up until the plates break apart. This process (过程) causes the ground to move. It is an earthquake. In other words, earthquakes are the shaking of the earth's surface caused by the earth's rocky outer layer as a result of the energy stored within the earth. The strain within the rocks is suddenly released (释放).
The damage an earthquake causes depends on where it is and the time it is happening. If an unpopulated region is struck, there will be low loss of life or property (财产). If it hits a large city, there may be many injuries and much destruction. Many of the areas at risk are largely populated now. Major earthquakes hitting those areas today could produce terrible damage.
Actually, there are several million small earthquakes every year. Large earthquakes, such as the 1964 Alaskan quake that measured 8. 4 on the Richter scale, cause millions of dollars in damage. In the last 500 years, millions of people have been killed by earthquakes around the world—including 240,000 in the 1976 Tangshan earthquake in China.
A 60-second or less earthquake can cause devastation that continues for years after the first tremor. In 1972, a series of severe earthquakes struck Managua, Nicaragua. Fifteen years later, the city still looked the way it had a week after the earthquake hit, because the country did not have the necessary money to rebuild it.
The shaking of the earth is sometimes not the greatest disaster. It is in the ensuing fires and floods that often the greatest damage occurs. In the 1906 earthquake, it was the fires caused after it that did the majority of the damage. An earthquake can also destroy dams high above a city or valleys, causing floods to sweep down and sweep away everything in their path.
5.Which of the following is the main idea of the first paragraph?
A.An earthquake comes from the inside of the earth.
B.The earth has great energy in storage.
C.How the earth plates move.

The bridegroom decided to ask his father for advice. “Dad,” he said, “I love Lily very much, but I have very smelly feet, so I'm afraid that she will not put up with them.” His father said, “All you have to do is wash your feet as often as possible, and you should always wear socks, even when you go to bed.” Well, it seemed a workable solution, the young man thought.

An escape plan can help every member of a family get out of a burning house. The idea is to get outside quickly and safely. __2__ So it is important to learn and remember the different ways out of your home.
Stay low

You can do this from an open window or call 911 if you have a phone with you. __4__ Then, firefighters will have a hard time finding you. The sooner they find you, the sooner you both can get out.
If your clothes catch fire, what should you do?
Your clothes could catch fire during a fire or by accident if you step too close to a candle. If this happens, don't run! Instead, stop, drop to the ground, cover your face with your hands, and roll. This will cut off the air and put out the flames. __5__

Ⅳ.写作(共两节)
第一节:
阅读下面短文,根据其内容写一篇60词左右的内容概要。
Most of the survivors have to stay in the open area overnight after a 7.1-magnitude quake toppled (使倒塌) houses, cut off power and first-aid materials supply in northwest China's Qinghai Province Wednesday while rescuers face difficulties in searching for the buried.
Rescuers have set up more than 40 tents for survivors in the Gyegu Town, near the epicenter (震中) in the Tibetan Autonomous Prefecture (县) of Yushu in southern Qinghai. But the effort seems far less than enough for the area inhabited by some 100,000 people.
Many people sought temporary shelters in buildings that remained unaffected by the tremor (轻微地震).
In the yard of Yushu's Sports Committee, nearly 1,000 people were sitting or lying on the ground in sheer (完全的,十足的) darkness. Some wrapped themselves up with quilts taken out from the debris (碎片,残骸).
Some brought their own tents and others turned on the lights of motorcycles.
“I'm hungry and thirsty. We've been waiting for help since the morning,” said Zhaxi Toinzhub.
The woman said her three children were still buried in the rubble (碎石,瓦砾).
The National Meteorological Station forecast Wednesday that temperatures may hit minus 3 degrees Celcius at night and 15 degrees Celcius in the daytime in the coming days.
The town would see strong winds and sunny weather in the coming days, providing favorable conditions for rescue operations.
The town is located in a remote area in Qinghai and the quake and ensuing (随后的) landslides have damaged roads, causing great difficulties for rescuers and, especially, machines from outside to enter the region.
“Rescuers had to dig with bare hands or iron sticks Wednesday, looking forward to the arrival of digging machines,” said a rescuer surnamed Wang, who was working at a collapsed hostel.
“The searching operation became even harder at night without lighting facilities,” he said.
In addition, rescuers may easily get exhausted working at a place with an altitude (海拔) of above 4,000 meters.
Thousands of rescuers and medical staff are rushing to Yushu from many regions of China, bringing machines, disaster-relief materials and medicines to the quake-hit town. Governments, organizations, enterprises and individuals are offering donations of money and materials to the region.

第二节:读后续写
阅读下面短文,根据所给情节进行续写,使之构成一个完整的故事。
Jenny was the only child in her family. She had a quarrel with her mother that afternoon and she ran out of the house angrily. She couldn't help weeping sorrowfully when she thought of the_scolding_from_her_mother. Having wandered aimlessly in_the_street for hours, she felt a little hungry and wished for something to eat. She stood beside a stand for a while, watching the middle-aged seller busy doing his business. However, with no money in hand, she gave a sign and had to leave.
The seller behind the stand noticed the young girl and asked, “Hey, girl, you want to have the noodles?”
“Oh, yes, but I don't have money on me,” she replied.
“That's nothing. I'll treat you today,” said the man. “Come in.”
The seller brought her a bowl of noodles, the smell so attractive. As she was eating, Jenny cried silently.
“What is it?” asked the man kindly.
“Nothing. Actually I was just touched by your kindness!” said Jenny as she wiped her tears. “Even a stranger on the street will give me a bowl of noodles, while my mother drove me out of the house. She showed no care for me. She is so merciless compared to a stranger!”
Hearing the words, the seller smiled,_“Girl, do you really think so? I only gave you a bowl of noodles and you thanked me a lot. But it is your mother who has raised you since you were a baby. Can you number the times she cooked for you? Have you expressed your gratitude to her?”
Jenny sat there, speechless and numb with shock; she remembered her mother's familiar_face and weathered hands. “Why didn't I think of that? A bowl of noodles from a stranger made me feel indebted. Why haven't I thanked my mum for what she has done for me?”
On the way home, Jenny made up her mind to make an apology to her mother for her rudeness as soon as she arrived home.
