This morning my family and I went to a friend's home to help her get things back in order. She was one of the unfortunate people whose home was recently destroyed by a tornado(龙卷风). One side of her home fell off and the roof was gone over a large part of the house. Torrential rain fell the rest of the night and all of the next day following the tornado, creating even more damage to her belongings. The home is a total loss. Still, there is much that is valuable, and our job today was to help her sort through the debris and find anything with actual value that she may want to take with her.
My husband helped to move furniture and other things to the storeroom while our two younger children helped clean up the yard. My oldest daughter and her boyfriend helped as well, and my another daughter with me swept up all of the areas of debris, sorting it for things that are important. We worked systematically, clearing the main living space first, then moving on to the kitchen, laundry area, then the master bedroom.
By the time we were done today, though there was no denying that the home had met with disaster, we had gone far to restore order from the loss that had been there before.
My thought in entering the day was that our friend, who had been having trouble sleeping, was being affected by that loss negatively. I hoped that if we could restore order, she would finally start to feel some sense of peace and her mind would quiet and allow her the much?needed rest she so deserves.
She posted on Facebook just a little while ago that for the first time she was sleeping at night. For me, what a wonderful and deeply meaningful way to begin the New Year!
24.What does the underlined word“debris”in Paragraph 1 mean?
A.The dust caused by tornado. B.Something that is valuable.
C.Something that the owner needs. D.The remains of something destroyed.
25.How many children does the author have at least?
A.5. B.4.
C.3. D.2.
26.What can we learn from the passage?
A.The author's friend has no family.
B.The author's family did much to restore order.
C.The author's friend couldn't sleep well owing to the loss.
D.The author's family managed to help her friend rebuild a new house.
27.What's the best title for the text?
A.A Way to Help Friends B.The Love from Friends
C.The Loss after the Tornado D.A Way to Welcome the New Year

There are so many expressions in American English that sound good but actually are not.
“Face the music”is a good example. When someone says he has to face the music, it does not mean he is going to a musical show or concert. To face the music means to accept the bad results of a behavior.
Imagine a friend asks you to take care of her beautiful red sports car. She gives you the keys and says,“Thanks so much for watching my car while I'm away. But please do not drive it. It is a very fast car and you are not on the insurance(保险).”But you do not listen. You want to show it to some friends and pretend(假装)the car is yours. So, you drive it around town one night. As bad luck would have it, you lose control of the car and drive it into a stop sign. The damage is serious. When your friend returns you must tell her what you have done and 揻ace the music. The搈usic攈ere is the result of your behavior. It could be losing her friendship or paying for repairs to her sports car or both. Whatever the music is, you must face it.
There are other American expressions that mean the same as揻ace the music.
To“take your medicine”means to accept the results from something bad you have done. And if someone says,“You made your bed. Now lie in it.”He means you created a bad situation and now you will experience the results, or as we say in American spoken English, you must deal with it!
“Pay the piper”also means the same as“face the music”. But that expression has its own very interesting beginning. We will talk about that in the next Words And Their Stories.
28.What's the main idea of this passage?
A.To invite a friend to go to a musical performance.
B.To tell people how to deal with a bad situation.
C.To give people a lesson on an action.
D.To introduce some expressions.
29.Which action belongs to “take your medicine”?
A.You broke the traffic rules and caused an accident.
B.You worked hard but failed in the exam.
C.You caught a cold and took some medicine.
D.You moved to a new city and lost touch with your old friends.
30.Which of the following expressions doesn't have the same meaning with the others?
A.Face the music. B.Take your medicine.
C.Make your bed. D.Pay the piper.
31.The next paragraph may talk about ________.
A.other words and their stories B.the beginning of “pay the piper”
C.the wider use of “face the music” D.an example of “take your medicine”
D
One of the most important things in the world is friendship. In order to have friends, you have to be a friend. But how can you be a good friend at school?
Listen桳isten when they are talking. Don't say anything unless they ask you a question. Sometimes it's not necessary for you to have anything to say;they just need someone to talk to about their feelings.
Help them—If your friend is ever in need of something, be there to help them. You should try to put them first, but make sure you don't do everything they want you to do. Try to take an extra pencil or pen with you to classes in case (以防) they forget one. Have a little extra money in your pocket in case they forget something they need.
Be there for them—Try to make something for your friend to help make them feel better in hard times. Making cards and encouraging them are among the nicest things you can do for a friend. Marilyn Monroe, a famous U.S. actor, once said,“I often make mistakes. Sometimes I am out of control. But if you can't stay with me at my worst, you are sure not to deserve (值得)to be with me at my best.”Always remember this!If you don't want to stay with your friends when they're in hard times, then you don't deserve to be with them when they're having a good time!
________—Try to organize some activities with your friends ahead of time. Go shopping, go for ice cream, have a party, go to a movie and so on. Take time to know each other even better by doing something you both enjoy. By planning things together, you both can have a good time. And you'll remember these things when you're all old!
32.While your friend is talking to you about his or her feelings, what should you do?
A.To give him or her some advice. B.To just listen unless asked.
C.To calm him or her down. D.To share your feelings as well.
33.What can we learn from Marilyn Monroe's words?
A.Life without a friend is death. B.A friend is easier lost than found.
C.A friend in need is a friend indeed. D.A man is known by his friends.
34.Which of the following can be put in the blank of the last paragraph?
A.Make plans. B.Enjoy yourself.
C.Understand your friends. D.Play with your friends.
35.What is the passage mainly about?
A.How to find a good friend. B.How to help friends in trouble.
C.How to be a good friend. D.How to make more friends.

第二节 读后续写(满分25分)
阅读下面短文,根据所给情节进行续写,使之构成一个完整的故事。
A Vacation with My Mother
I had an interesting childhood. It was filled with surprises and amusements, all because of my mother條oving, sweet, and yet absent璵inded and forgetful. One strange family trip we took when I was eleven tells a lot about her.
My two sets of grandparents lived in Colorado and North Dakota, and my parents decided to spend a few weeks driving to those states and seeing all the sights along the way. As the first day of our trip approached, David,_my eight瓂ear璷ld brother, and I unwillingly said good璪ye to all of our friends. Who knew if we'd ever see them again? Finally, the moment of our departure arrived, and we loaded suitcases, books, games, camping equipment, and a tent into the car and bravely drove off. We bravely drove off again two hours later after we'd returned home to get the purse and traveler's checks Mom had forgotten.
David and I were always a little nervous when using gas station bathrooms if Mom was driving while Dad slept:“You stand outside the door and play lookout(放哨)while I go, and I'll stand outside the door and play lookout while you go.”I had terrible pictures in my mind:“Honey, where are the kids?”“What?!Oh, Gosh... I thought they were being awfully quiet.”We were never actually left behind in a strange city, but we weren't about to take any chances.
On the fourth or fifth night, we had trouble finding a hotel with a vacancy. After driving in vain for some time, Mom suddenly got a great idea:Why didn't we find a house with a likely?looking backyard and ask if we could set up tent there?David and I became nervous. To our great relief, Dad turned down the idea. Mom never could understand our objections(反对). If a strange family showed up on her front doorsteps, Mom would have been delighted. She thinks everyone in the world is as nice as she is. We finally found a vacancy in the next town.

You can stay at a 3?star to 5?star hotel of your choice-and there are further discounts if one of the nights you stay is Sunday, no matter which hotel you choose. The card will also give you a 10% discount in certain restaurants around the city.
This Barcelona tour is available anytime between the 5th and the 31st of October, although booking must be made before the 30th of September. If you prefer, you can telephone us. Don't miss it.

30.答案与解析:C 细节理解题。文中对四个选项的意思分别进行了解释,Pay the piper和Take your medicine都是Face the music的同义词组,意思是接受自己的行为不好的结果。根据第五段中“‘You made your bed. Now lie in it.’ He means you created a bad situation and now you will experience the results,or as we say in American spoken English, you must deal with it!”可知,Make your bed的意思是制造了一个糟糕的局面,所以Make your bed与其他几个词组意思不同,故选C项。

参考范文:
Paragraph 1:
The next day we remembered the brand?new tent we had brought with us. Although we didn't want to sleep in the tent,_we had to agree with Mom's idea because we all expected to go camping in nature. So we stopped our car at a river. Dad started to set up the tent with us while Mom was ready to take out some necessaries from the car.“Wow!” Suddenly Mom had a terrible shout.“What's your trouble?” we asked.“I forgot to bring our food,”Mom answered worriedly. Hearing that, we had a good laugh over her. What a forgetful and absent?minded Mom!In fact, she put the food in the trunk of our car.
Paragraph 2:
We drove through several states and saw lots of great sights along the way. The bright blue sky, the limitless green grass, the group of sheep, the setting sun and the countless stars in the curtain of nights kept me spellbound. Not only did we see the wonderful scenery, we also managed to consider Mom's scandals as a kind of fun. It was a nice trip that we'd remember forever!
