My First Marathon
A month before my first marathon, one of my ankles was injured and this meant not running for two weeks. leaving me only two weeks to train. Yet, I was determined to go ahead.
I remember back to my 7th year in school. In my first P.E. class, the teacher required us to run laps and then hit a softball. I didn't do either well. He later informed me that I was “not athletic”.
The idea that I was “not athletic” stuck with me for years. When I started running in my 30s, I realized running was a battle against myself, not about competition or whether or not I was athletic. It was all about the battle against my own body and mind. A test of wills!
The night before my marathon, I dreamt that I couldn't even find the finish line. I woke up sweating and nervous, but ready to prove something to myself.
Shortly after crossing the start line, my shoes laces (鞋带) became untied. So I stopped to readjust. Not the start I wanted!
At mile 3, I passed a sign:“GO FOR IT,RUNNERS!”
By mile 17, I became out of breath and the once injured ankle hurt badly. Despite the pain, I stayed the course walking a bit and then running again.
By mile 21, I was starving!
As I approached mile 23, I could see my wife waving a sign. She is my biggest fan. She never minded the alarm clock sounding at 4 a.m. or questioned my expenses on running.
I was one of the final runners to finish. But I finished! And I got a medal. In fact, I got the same medal as the one that the guy who came in first place had.
Determined to be myself, move forward, free of shame and worldly labels (世俗标签), I can now call myself a “marathon winner”.

B.A winner is one with a great effort of will.
C.Failure is the mother of success.
D.One is never too old to learn.

The human body is designed to move. But modern lifestyles and office jobs rarely give us the chance to move around. As we know, we sit while we're eating; we sit in the car and we sit while we're watching TV. And many of us sit for many hours at work.
New research shows that sitting less than three hours a day might extend your life by two years. Peter Katzmarzyk, a scientist at the University of Louisiana in the southern United States, says that sitting is ubiquitous in our lives, meaning it is something we do all the time, everywhere.
However, Mr. Katzmarzyk says even that does not mean you can sit for the rest of your waking hours. He also says you may exercise often.揥e can't throw away physical activity. It's extremely important. We have 60 years of research showing us that.
Mr. Katzmarzyk and his colleagues are part of a new generation of researchers studying how sitting all day affects length of life.揝tudies that have assessed the relationship between sitting and mortality (死亡率) or television viewing and mortality are very rare. There have only been a few of them, actually five or six now, in the last four or five years.”They found that cutting television time to less than two hours a day could add one?point four years to life.
Luckily, change is already coming to some offices, especially in the design of desks. A搒tanding desk lets people stand while they are working. Another new design is called the 搕readmill desk. A treadmill is an exercise machine that lets you walk in one place. Even some U. S. schools are beginning to experiment with desks that are part bicycle to keep children moving. That's one of the strategies that many companies are using now.
Mr. Katzmarzyk also says studying this problem has inspired his team to make a few changes in their own lives.
28.The underlined word “ubiquitous” is the closest in meaning to ________.
A.dangerous B.awkward
C.comfortable D.common
29.Which view agrees with the opinion of Mr. Katzmarzyk?

D.Stopping watching TV is a necessary but hard task.

A.It's a relatively new area of study.
B.It's a hot subject studied by experts.
C.It's a study that begins too late.
D.It's ignored by many experts.
31.Why are the desks of all kinds designed for those who sit more?
A.To give them more comfort.
B.To improve their work efficiency.
C.To offer them the chance to exercise.
D.To seek pleasure while working.
D

Physical education classes act as a public health measure to encourage activity and help teens have healthy weight.
Inactivity increases teens' risk of developing many diseases. An active lifestyle offers a good way of protection from these health problems. As much as 75 percent of health care spending goes toward treating medical condition that can be hindered by lifestyle changes, according to the American College of Sports Medicine.
According to the President's Council on Fitness, Sports and Nutrition (PCFSN), students who performed five hours of physical activity each week improved their academic (学业的) performance. Students from programs with no physical activity, who used the extra time for classroom study, did not perform better on tests than those who gave up some study time in support of physical education.
32.According to Paragraph 2, what does physical education in high school mean?
A.Helping teens learn to make good plans.
B.Removing the stress faced by teens at school.
C.Making teens attach importance to exercise later.
D.Getting teens to encourage adults to exercise.

第二节(满分25分)
阅读下面短文,根据其内容写一篇60词左右的内容摘要。
Most kids have problems with friends from time to time, so if you feel sad about this, remember lots of kids feel the same. If you are feeling left out and sad a lot of the time, tell your mum or dad or your teacher and ask her/him to help you.
No one wants to play with me today. Why? Sometimes the friend you usually play with wants to play with someone else. This is OK. It is normal for people to want a change, but you might feel a bit sad or upset. Maybe your friend wants to join in a game or try his skills with others. Maybe he meets someone after school and wants to know him better. Maybe you hurt his feelings and he can't talk to you about it because he doesn't know how to begin.
What can you do? Try asking your friend, nicely, if you have upset him at all. Ask if he would like to talk about anything. If he still wants to play without you, then say that's OK. Look for other people in your class and go and stand near them. If they are playing a game, watch for a while and then see if you could join in.
Look for someone to help-if you can't find anyone to play with, get a rope or a ball and practise your skills. Maybe someone else will come to talk or play with you.
Be positive-don't think you will never have another friend. There are lots of people out there just wanting to make new friends!
If you make friends with some different people, then you can arrange to play with them again. Take something to play with to school the next day. If your friend is still not wanting to play with you, then you can ask other kids to play with you or play with the toy or the game yourself.

Hello, Ryan. Thanks so much for your party! It was a big surprise and I really enjoyed it. I'm sorry that I had to leave early. My dad was worried about the traffic. In the end, we got to the airport at 8:00 pm, much too early. Then the flight finally took off after three hours. My mum wasn't very keen on flying, so she was quite stressed. Altogether, it wasn't much fun. Fortunately, New York time is five hours behind London, so it was still Sunday evening when we arrived.
New York is really different from London, and I feel quite strange. Yesterday my cousin Sam and I went to the Fifth Avenue. You've probably heard of it, which is famous for its amazing stores. I was surprised at the prices. Things are much cheaper here. Of course, I bought some presents for you and your family. I sent them to you by UPS Express. Now I'm quite tired of travelling, and I can't wait to go home in LA! Ryan, don't forget to call me back.Bye.
