But there was nobody else around, and soon, the fire grew big.
Seeing this, the boy shouted at the top of his voice. His shout woke up the port workers living nearby, who were enjoying a Sunday morning in bed.

Every year there are hundreds of earthquakes in different parts of the world. China, Japan, Russia and the USA have the highest occurrence (发生) of earthquakes in the world. On May 12th, 2008, a strong earthquake struck Sichuan Province, China. So far it has killed nearly 70,000 lives, injured about 370,000 and caused a lot of damage.
We measure an earthquake’s strength on the Richter scale (里氏震级). The Richter scale was introduced in 1935 in Southern California in the USA. It measures earthquakes on a scale of one to ten. Any earthquake measuring five or more is usually serious.
The earth’s crust (地壳) is made up of layers (地层) of rock called plates (板块). As these plates move, they sometimes crash against each other, causing the crust to quake. Earthquakes can also break up gas and oil pipes. This can cause fires to break out, which can do as much damage as the earthquake itself.
Another effect of earthquakes is tsunamis (海啸). These are huge waves created by earthquakes beneath the sea. They can be many meters high and cause great damage to coastal towns and cities.

Fifty people died, over 11,000 were injured, and 100,000 houses were heavily damaged or destroyed in an earthquake that hit Shangyi and Zhangbei Counties in north China’s Hebei Province. The quake, measuring 6.2 on the Richter scale (里氏6.2级), hit the area 220 km northwest of Beijing at 11:50 a.m. on January 10th, 1998.
Geng Qingguo, a researcher with the SSB (国家地震局) Earthquake Center, made a report of the quake. Geng said that the areas are most easily hit by earthquakes measuring 6 to a bit over 7 on the Richter scale.
However, scientists did not see the earthquake earlier. Clouds covered a large area in the northern part of north China before the earthquake. Experts said that this stopped satellites from correctly watching the temperature at the correct altitude (纬度).
In the last ten years, about 305 big earthquakes have occurred in China with 9 measuring over 7 on the Richter scale, 60 measuring over 6, and 236 measuring over 5.

IV. One possible version,
A powerful earthquake measuring a magnitude of 8.0 hit China’s Sichuan Province suddenly at 2:28 p.m. on May 12, 2008. In several terrible seconds, many of the cities and towns lay in ruins. Not only were thousands of houses and buildings destroyed but also all the bridges had collapsed. In addition, many damaged roads and landslides were seen here and there. Many people were trapped under the ruins. More and more people lost their lives in the earthquake. Thousands of soldiers, armed police and fire fighters have been sent to the quake-hit areas to join in disaster relief work. Now all the Chinese unite and work together under the leadership of the government to overcome the disaster. I hope all the Chinese can take action and join in the disaster relief work.
