Background:
Students have learned English at least 7 years. Students have gradually understood the meaning of clauses and used these language forms to express themselves.
Students has learned the structure of attributive clauses, and they are required to review the grammar point.
Type of lesson
School level: regular middle school
Type of lesson: the review lesson
Analysis of teaching material

1. Content
Topic: classmates and teachers
Background: Students have known a lot about their classmates.
Discourse and language
(1) Discourse:
Genre: dialogue (Students try to guess the persons according to some tips which are expressed with attributive clauses.)
(2) Language:
Grammar: simple present tense, simple past tense
Vocabulary: simple words.
Teaching objectives

1. Students are led to review the structure and meaning of attributive clauses.
2. Students can understand some complicated sentences, especially attributive clauses during their reading.
3. Students could be more aware of friendship between classmates through the guessing game. It will help students care more about their classmates and work together to face the entrance exam for high school.
Prediction of learning difficulties

Students may make mistake in dividing the structure of attributive clauses, and then they cannot choose the right words to introduce clauses (The words include that, which, who, whom).
Some students may be not active and feel shy while speaking English in the class.
Teaching procedure
A regular lesson about 40 minutes

Lead in
(3 minutes)
1. Lead-in (4 minutes)
Teacher will play a guessing game, show students some descriptions about classmates and teachers. Students are required to find out the persons. Additionally, these tips are given in attributive clauses.
【purpose】 Introduce the topic (attributive clauses).

Presentation
(15 minutes)
Making a short summary (3 minutes)
Teacher will lead students to make a summary about the words, including that, which, who, whom and whose, after the guessing game. It will help students review the basic structures of attributive clauses.

【Purpose】Encourage students to review the basic structures.
2. Finding attributive clauses in complicated sentences (6 minutes)
(1) Students are required to find attributive clauses in complicated sentences. And then, teacher will ask students: How do you find these clauses? Do you have any steps?
Step1: 找出先行词
Step2: 判断先行词的指代和扮演的句子成分
(先行词是指人或物,或者同指人和物,并且在从句中充当什么成分,主语还是宾语)
Step3: 由先行词决定定语从句的引导词 (that, which, who, whom and whose)
【purpose】Involve students in analyzing the complicated sentences, which could remind them of three steps to understand attributive clauses.
3. Listing the difference between that and which, that and who (6 minutes)
在下列定语从句中关系代词只能用that
先行词是不定代词,且指物
先行词由最高级,序数词所修饰
先行词被the only, the last, the very 修饰
先行词同时指代人、物
句子中已有who,which,避免重复
在下列定语从句中关系代词只能用 which/whom
(1)“介词+ 关系代词”
I like the person to whom the teacher is talking.
The house in which Lu Xun used to live is now a museum.

( 20 minutes)
Choosing the right words to introduce attributive clauses (5 minutes)
Teacher required students to choose right words from that, which, who, whom and whose.
【purpose】Help students strengthen the difference between these words, and check whether students can correctly understand the difference.
2. Finish the exercise in Book 《中考解读》P81 (10 minutes)
Students are required to finish the exercise about attributive clauses in 《中考解读》P81.

The book (1) ________ (我想和你们分享的)is The Old Man and the Sea. This is a book (2) ___________ (一位美国著名作家写的)Ernest Hemingway. This book tells about a fishman (3) _____________ (足够幸运在海上抓住了一条大鱼)but finds it hard to take it home. On the way back, he has to fight against the fish, and the sea as well. The most unforgettable thing (4) ____________ (留在我脑海里)is that the fisherman never gives up when meeting with difficulties. I still remember the well-known sentence (5) _______ (来自这本书的):Man is not made for defeat. This tells us that nothing seems terrible as long as we have a strong will and a brave heart.

【purpose】Encourage students to make attributive clauses while they want to express more meanings in a sentence.

3.Translate the following famous sentences into Chinese (5 minutes)
(1) Students are asked to translate the famous sentences which include attributive clauses.
God helps those who help themselves.
He who laughs last laughs best.
He who does not reach the Great wall is not a true man.
【purpose】Encourage students analyze complicated sentences and try to express the meanings in their words.
Assignment
(2 minute)
Students are required to review the grammar points.
Students are also required to use several sentences to introduce your friends or family members.
【purpose】Increase the practice of attributive clauses.
