I was reading these interesting stories behind a group of great logos in the world. Personally Nike is my favorite one — it’s so simple. And I liked the stories behind them, which made me forget all other things. McDonald’s, Apple, Mercedes Benz and Adidas own great logos as well, and they are among my favorites.
Nike
In the Greek myth, Nike is the goddess of victory and the source of inspiration for soldiers. This logo represents the wing in the famous statue of the Greek goddess. Nike’s logo was designed by Carolyn Davidson in 1971 for $35, and was registered as a trademark in 1995.
McDonald’s
The logo was designed in 1962 by Jim Schindler to resemble the arch-shaped (拱形的) signs on the side of the company’s then walk-up hamburger stand. Later on, the two golden arches were combined together to form the “M”. The McDonald’s name was added to the logo in 1968.
Apple
There are different stories behind Apple’s logo. The first logo was a reference to the religious story of Adam and Eve, in which the apple represented the fruit of the Tree of Knowledge. One year later, the second logo was designed in 1977 by Steve Jobs and Ronald Wayne, and it described Sir Isaac Newton sitting under an apple tree. This logo didn’t stay long. One year later it was replaced almost immediately by graphic designer Rob Janoff’s “rainbow apple”, a rainbow-colored silhouette (轮廓) of an apple with a bite taken out of it. And then the rainbow-colored apple was replaced by the one-colored logo in 1998. It has not been changed so far.
Mercedes Benz
The Mercedes Benz logo, which was originally created by Gottlieb Daimler in 1909, consists of a simple description of a three-pointed star that represents its rule of the land, the sea and the air. The company was founded by Gottlieb Daimler and Wilhelm Maybach. Mercedes is the name of Maybach’s elder daughter, while Benz came as a result of a combination with Benz, Cie and DMG in 1926.
Adidas
The Adidas logo, which was created by the founder of the company Adi Dassler, represents mountains, pointing towards the challenges that are seen ahead and goals that can be achieved. The logo was used for the first time in 1967.
1. We can learn that Apple’s present logo is ________.
A. the religious story of Adam and Eve
B. a bitten apple with only one color
C. Newton’s sitting under an apple tree
D. the rainbow-colored bitten apple
2. ________ stands for the rule of the land, the sea and the air.
A. Nike’s logo B. Apple’s logo
C. The Mercedes logo D. The Adidas logo
3. Which of the following time orders describes the births of the great logos?
A. Mercedes Benz ——McDonald’s——Nike – Apple.
B. Nike —— McDonald’s ——Apple —— Mercedes Benz.
C. McDonald’s —— Apple—— Nike —— Mercedes Benz.
D. Nike —— Mercedes Benz —— McDonald’s —— Apple.

My 16-year-old son, Anton, had gone to the local swimming hole. Most kids swam there, and there were plenty of rocks for them to use as safe harbors, so I had no fears for his safety.
Still, the firefighter’s first words “You need to come up here to the Stillwater River” made me catch my breath and his follow-up words gave me relief: “Your son is OK.”
When I got to the river, I immediately saw the firetruck, ambulance and Anton, wrapped with a towel about his shoulders, sitting quietly on a low platform of the fire engine.
I hurried over to him. “You OK?” I asked.
“Yeah,” was all that he said. But my eyes begged for an explanation, I didn’t get it from my son, however, who tends to play his cards close to his vest.
The story was this: A woman was being swept under water. Hearing the cries, Anton and his friend Tyler, without hesitation, swam out to her, and brought her safely to shore.
In an age in which the word “hero” is broadcast with abandon and seemingly applied to anyone who make it through the day, I realized the real thing in my son. The teens are stubborn and self-centered, but that didn’t mean they have no desire to do good.
Still shocked by my son’s daring, I drove him home. Along the way, I tried to dig out some more information from him-but he had precious little to say. The only words he said were, “What’s for supper?”
I spent some time alone that evening, thinking about the tragedy that might have been. The next morning, when Anton got up, I half expected him to tell me the story. But all he did was toast some bread, pull himself together, and head for the door to start a new day. Watching from the window, I was reminded that still water often runs deep.
4. Why did the mother allow her son to swim there?
A. Because he was an excellent swimmer.
B. Because the water of the river was shallow.
C. Because he was old enough to swim.
D. Because the rocks could be of help if there is danger.
5. The underlined part “who tends to play his cards close to his vest” probably means ______.
A. Anton is a boy fond of swimming with other kids
B. Anton is unwilling to tell others what he thinks
C. Anton always has a desire to help others
D. Anton seldom changes his mind
6. In the mother’s eyes, what her son did was _________________.
A. dangerous but interesting B. unexpected and courageous
C. meaningful but difficult D. awful and absurd
7. What might be the best title for the passage?
A. My son, my hero B. Anton, a silent boy
C. A good deed D. A proud mother

Can you imagine what 680,000 tons of food look like? That’s the amount of food wasted in Britain each year, and at the top of the list of wasted food is bread. In the British diet, bread appears in every meal. It is eaten for breakfast, used for sandwiches for lunch and put in soups at dinner. Almost everyone in Britain buys bread.
Bread is so important to the British that they use the word “bread” to mean “money” and the word “loaf” (一条面包) to mean “head”. So let’s use our “loaves” to understand why so much “bread” is wasted!
Even though bread is still sold in such a popular way and in such a large amount, that doesn’t mean it’s made full use of. It seems people are simply buying much more than they need, so they throw away the bread that they don’t need.
Baker Chris Young explains that the British aren’t valuing their bread because bread is no longer respected. “None of the bread that is thrown away is ‘real’ bread—homemade or carefully?made bread, but is bought from the bread shop.”
Another baker Mark Boyle agrees. “If you make something by yourself, you don’t want to waste it because you know how much energy you’ve put into it. But although home baking is a nice idea, for many it’s out of their ability because they have to work such long hours every day that they don’t have time to make bread by themselves at home. So they simply buy bread and just bring it home to eat.”
Perhaps the British should try to bake bread by themselves, which can probably make their dustbins lighter.
8. What can we infer from the passage?
A. Bread plays an important part in British diet.
B. Different British people like different foods.
C. Bread will become less popular in Britain.
D. Bread is the favorite food for the British.
9. If a British boss says to his workers “Please bring your loaves here,” he ________.
A. wants his workers to eat healthily
B. advises his workers to buy more bread
C. asks his workers to work more cleverly
D. promises to give his workers more money
10. Mark Boyle believes that the British throw away much bread mainly because ________.
A. they are tired of eating bread
B. they are too rich to value bread
C. they don’t like the taste of bread
D. they don’t put any energy into making bread
11. Many British people fail to make bread by themselves at home because ________.
A. they are very busy
B. they don’t earn much money
C. they become lazier than before
D. they don’t know how to bake bread
D
Why should mankind explore space? Why should money, time and effort be spent exploring and researching something with so few apparent benefits? Why should resources be spent on space rather than on conditions and people on Earth? These are questions that, understandably, are very often asked.
Perhaps the best answer lies in our genetic makeup as human beings. What drove our ancestors to move from the trees into the plains, and on into all possible areas and environments? The wider the spread of a species, the better its chance of survival. Perhaps the best reason for exploring space is this genetic tendency to expand wherever possible.
Nearly every successful civilization has explored, because by doing so, any dangers in surrounding areas can be identified and prepared for. Without knowledge, we may be completely destroyed by the danger. With knowledge, we can lessen its effects.
Exploration also allows minerals and other potential resources to be found. Even if we have no immediate need of them, they will perhaps be useful later. Resources may be more than physical possessions. Knowledge or techniques have been acquired through exploration. The techniques may have medical applications which can improve the length or quality of our lives. We have already benefited from other spin-offs including improvements in earthquake prediction, in satellites for weather forecasting and in communications systems. Even non-stick pans and mirrored sunglasses are by-products of technological developments in the space industry!
While many resources are spent on what seems a small return, the exploration of space allows creative, brave and intelligent members of our species to focus on what may serve to save us. While space may hold many wonders and explanations of how the universe was formed or how it works, it also holds dangers. The danger exists, but knowledge can help human beings to survive. Without the ability to reach out across space, the chance to save ourselves might not exist.
While Earth is the only planet known to support life, surely the adaptive ability of humans would allow us to live on other planets. It is true that the lifestyle would be different, but human life and cultures have adapted in the past and surely could in the future.
12. Why does the author mention the questions?
A. To express his doubts.
B. To compare different ideas.
C. To introduce points for discussion.
D. To describe the conditions on Earth.
13. What is the reason for exploring space based on?
A. Humans are nature born to do so.
B. Humans have the tendency to fight.
C. Humans may find new sources of food.
D. Humans don’t like to stay in the same place.
14. The underlined word “spin-offs” in Paragraph 4 probably refers to ___.
A. survival chances B. unexpected benefits
C. potential resources D. physical possessions
15. Which of the statements can best sum up the passage?
A. Space exploration has created many wonders.
B. Space exploration provides the best value for money.
C. Space exploration can benefit science and technology.
D. Space exploration may help us avoid potential problems on Earth.

The most important change in a person’s life is the change of his or her attitude. Right attitudes produce right actions. Have you ever met someone who gave you a different view of life?
On a Sunday morning, I saw something very interesting as I went to the greengrocer’s. To get there, I had to cross a bridge over railway tracks. The bridge was pretty high. A set of steep steps had to be climbed; then the bridge flattened out (变平), followed by coming down another set of steps. On my way back from the greengrocer’s, I saw an elderly gentleman running up the steps. After watching him run up the steps so fast, I thought that he could be in a rush.
Before I knew it, he had crossed the bridge, and then he ran back to where he started. To my surprise, he did not stop. He turned around, and then went up and down the bridge again. He was not struggling, and seemed to enjoy going up and down the bridge. Being a fitness fanatic (热衷于健美的人) myself, I admired his ability to cross the bridge so quickly. My curiosity got the better of me, and I came up to him to have a chat with him.
“Excuse me, sir. Are you training for an event?” I asked.
He stopped and smiled. “No, not training for an event. Well, I am training for life,” he said with a broad smile on his face as sweat rolled down his cheeks.
I told him that I had been looking for a role model of fitness, and that I hoped to be as strong as he is when I get to his age. He said that everyone has a choice about what they do with their life. “I am not different ,” he added. With much admiration, I asked, “What drives you to maintain good health?”
Then he told me the accident he met with when he was young.

参考范文:
Paragraph1:
“I used to be a cyclist,” he said. “Competing in cycling events is what I loved and enjoyed.” Then he told me why he stopped cycling. While cycling one day, he was hit by a car. The doctor told him that he might never walk again. He refused to believe that. So, he was determined not to let the accident prevent him from walking again.
Paragraph 2:
His great determination paid off, and he was able to walk again. His love for life and for fitness is what makes him cross the bridge many times. Moved by his story, I told him that it was an honor to meet a role model like him and that I wanted to make friends with him. He agreed happily. I shook his hand, thanked him for having a chat with me, and let him continue with his exercise. As I walked away, my admiration for him grew even more because of his attitude to life.
