Last weekend, I was talking about winter vacation plans with a friend when I suddenly realized that this year I should start up an old plan of learning how to skate again.
I抳e always wanted to learn skating. But I didn抰 have a proper chance to learn it. When I was young, the small coastal city where I lived had no ice rink (溜冰场). My parents signed me up for classes at a skating school out of town, but I had to catch the early bus on weekends to get there, and it took two hours to go and come back, so I gave it up pretty quickly.
Now is my chance to fulfill my childhood dream! Excited, I started calling skating rinks in Beijing, hoping to sign up for lessons. But some said they only had classes for children. Some said it was too much trouble to teach adults. One receptionist paused after my question and said strangely, 揧ou never learned this as a child?
I understand if they don抰 get many adult learners, but to say that adults are harder to teach than children is such a slap in the face. I thought I lived in a society that encourages people to take on lifelong learning. Is there some unspoken rule that says after one reaches a certain age, he or she is not allowed to learn systematically with a trainer anymore? Are adults not allowed to pursue new hobbies?
There were many things I didn抰 have time to properly learn when I was young. I failed to see how important hobbies were, and I was sick of my parents nagging (唠叨) me to do after-school activities. Today, when I want to go out with friends, I find I have so few activities to do with them. And now I’m being told that I can’t even make up for my childhood mistake. It seems that I’ve missed my chance. I missed it 20 years ago. Now, I can only go on being ordinary.
The author gave up learning skating when she was young because _____________.
she wasn抰 interested in it
her parents didn抰 allow her to learn it
her parents couldn抰 find any skating schools
it was inconvenient for her to take the lessons
How did those skating rinks the author called respond to her request?
A. Positively B. Anxiously C. Flexibly D. Disappointingly
26. Which could be the author抯 opinion?
A. It抯 never too late to learn.
B. It 抯 understandable that adults don抰 like learning.
C. Adults are harder to teach than kids.
D. Adults had better not pursue new hobbies.
27. The passage is written to express the author抯 ___________.
A. fear of going on being ordinary
B. determination to learn skating well
C. regret for losing the chance of pursuing hobbies
D. blame on her parents nagging her to do after-school activities
C
We抮e not sure where letting children drink wine fits into permissive, authoritarian and authoritative parenting styles, but a research team from the University of New South Wales are trying to find it out.
During their study, researchers discovered that kids who were given alcohol by their parents were more likely to be consuming whole drinks by the time they were 15 or 16, but were far less likely to binge-drink(酗酒).
The researchers analyzed nearly 2,000 Year 7 students and their parents over a four-year period. They measured the teenagers’ consumption of whole drinks, their binge drinking—consuming four or more drinks at a time, as well as who supplied them with the alcohol: their parents, friends, or other adults. The study found that when children were given alcohol from their parents, they were least likely to binge-drink.
But what about the long-reported damage that alcohol can have on developing teenage brains? Lead author of this study, Professor Richard Mattick, says that giving children alcohol at an earlier age could serve as a preventative measure of kids developing alcohol-related problems later in life. 揟here抯 a body of research indicating the adolescent brain is still developing well into the early 20s and alcohol may prevent the best development, says Professor Mattick. 揃ut also we know parents want to do the right thing for their children and there has been anecdotal evidence that children introduced to alcohol by their parents, as is common in some European cultures, may be less likely to develop problems with alcohol.
However, there抯 one result from the study Professor Mattick can抰 ignore: that being given alcohol at an early age by the parents doubled (使加倍) children’s possibility of drinking than their peers (同龄人). “There may be later harms that are not yet obvious, and we’re aware that an early start of drinking is strongly associated with later alcohol use problems in adulthood梡utting it off is the best strategy.
According to the researchers, kids supplied with alcohol by their parents will be______.
more likely to quit drinking in adulthood
less likely to grow into teenage binge-drinkers
more likely to grow into binge-drinkers
less likely to have whole drinks as teenagers
29. Who affected kids drinking behaviors the most in the study?
A. Their parents B. Their friends C. School authorities D. Strangers
30. Which statement will Professor Mattick agree with?
A. The brain stops developing before the age of 20.
B. Alcohol won抰 damage the developing teenage brains.
C. Giving kids alcohol at an earlier age may have its benefit.
D. European kids tend to develop problems with alcohol.
31. On Professor Mattick抯 advice, parents had better________.
A. let kids drink alcohol at an early age
B. make kids start drinking alcohol late
C. forbid kids to drink alcohol at any age
D. permit kids to drink alcohol at will
D
An arts program is helping students at some of the lowest performing schools in the United States. The program, called Turnaround Arts, aims to help improve low performing schools by adding music and the arts to the usual study program.
Turnaround Arts was launched by Michelle Obama, the wife of former U.S President Barack Obama. Some money for the program comes from the federal government. For the students at participating schools, the program offers a kind of safe place from city neighborhoods. Many of the children come from areas with high crime rates.
Turnaround Arts is a partnership between the federal government and private businesses. Florence Griffith Joyner Elementary is one of the 68 schools in the U.S. participating in the program. Teachers receive special training and look for ways to add music and the arts into all the classes. Turnaround Arts schools partner with musicians and actors who work with the students. Performers have included Yo-Yo Ma, Sarah Jessica Parker, Elton John and Cameron Diaz.
School headmaster Long noted 揟he children were so excited and have been so excited because it’s not just about — ‘Go to the board. Do the problem. Turn the page. Read the book’; it’s about acting and imitating artists and historic figures.” She noted how some students got the chance to act out the process of a caterpillar (毛虫) becoming a butterfly. “I like to act and I like to sing and I like to dance,” said 10-year-old Kayla Driakare.
Long said that Turnaround Arts was only in its first year at the school, and teachers were already seeing results. “We’ve probably suspended(暂时停学) one kid this year. That’s amazing,” she said. “Parents are getting phone calls to come to family arts night, and it’s not just the naughty calls home. It’s for them to come and learn more about what their children are learning. So our parents engagement goes up.
Turnaround Arts launched by Michelle Obama ______.
helps students who behave badly get high grades
aims to improve teachers and students performance
gets financial support only from the federal government
provides students with a chance of having access to musicians and actors
What can be inferred from what Principal Long said?
Students love this program very much.
Students can learn how to act from this program.
This program makes students know science well.
Students can perform themselves well during the program.
Which word can replace the underlined word in the last paragraph?
attitude B. proposal C. involvement D. opportunity
What抯 the author抯 purpose in writing the passage?
To advertise for an institute.
To introduce an arts program of the USA.
To call on people to support some lowest performing schools.
To encourage more American schools to participate in Turnaround Arts.

Singapore, a country with a great population, produces only about 10 percent of its own food needs. Only 1 percent of Singapore’s 724 square kilometers is currently used for agriculture. 36
Singapore has announced new measures designed to quickly increase local food production in the next ten years, including rooftop farming. 37 The plan includes $21million in government money to support local production of eggs, vegetables and fish in the shortest possible time.
This plan includes efforts to find new farming spaces, such as industrial areas and empty building spaces. 38 Officials say one part of the project aims to establish rooftop farms on public housing parking areas beginning in May.
39 It is to raise local food production levels to make up for climate change and population growth that could threaten worldwide food supplies. 揟he serious COVID-19 situation highlights the importance of local food production, as part of Singapore抯 strategies to make sure of food safety, the Food Agency said in a statement.
The plan were announced as the worldwide spread of COVID-19 has caused shortages of many products, including food in some areas. Limitations on population movements around the world have weaken supply chains and raised concern about worsening shortages and price increases. 40
But it has decided to speed up the process of increasing local production to begin within the next six months.
The rising prices are hitting customers hard as well.
Singapore抯 Food Agency says its goal is specific.
Climate change has great influence on food production.
And production costs there are higher than the rest of Southeast Asia.
It also calls for adding new technologies to improve farming methods.
Singapore stated that it has enough food to get through the COVID-19 crisis(危机).
It wants to meet 30% of nutritional needs with locally produced food by 2030.

Saving someone’ s life is clearly not an easy thing, especially when it comes to something as personal and risky as sharing one of your kidneys(肾脏)with them. This kind of behavior always presupposes (以...为先决条件)a relationship between the donor and the receiver, like a husband to his wife or a father to his son. So when a woman donated a kidney to a complete stranger, she surprised the world with her kindness.
The story has a surprising start, in a public bus. Rex Scott is a bus driver and his wife, Valerie Scott, had been dealing with kidney disease for 7 years. Her kidneys kept growing until they reached the size of footballs, gradually losing their function. “Only a transplant operation can save her,” Rex Scott told the reporters.
Rex was not even supposed to be driving the day that he met his wife's saviour(救星), Joyce Smith. When Joyce Smith boarded Rex' s bus, she had been on a trip with her friend, Heather Musch. Musch was also in need of a kidney transplant and Joyce had volunteered to be her donor. Joyce spent a month preparing to become a possible donor. Unfortunately, Musch was not considered healthy enough to be a recipient (接受者)yet and the window was closing fast on Joyce' s possibility of becoming a donor.
That is all until Joyce and her friend were about to get off Rex' s bus. "Before he let us off the bus, he also said he took a kidney as a tip. If he had not made that joke, none of this would have happened,” Joyce Smith said.
Joyce was already fit to be a donor, but since her friend Musch could not receive her kidney, all her efforts seemed wasted. So when she heard Rex’ s joke, she knew that her opportunity to help somebody came. She had already made the decision to be a donor, whether it was her friend or someone else.
Para. 1: “My little son has benefited from the transplant operation and I want to pass the kindness on,” Joyce Smith said. ____________________________________________________ ________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
Para. 2: What's crazier is that Joyce Smith was a perfect match for Valerie Scott. __________ _______________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________

应用文范文
Dear Editor,
I’m writing to ask for advice on my relationship with my teenage son. To tell the truth, I often struggle to get along with him. Recently we have argued with each other a great deal.
He is anxious about his skin because it has started to become very oily, with lots of red spots. He is always angry these days and seems less confident. I keep telling him that these changes are normal, and that things will turn out just fine. Of course, I wanted to show my concern for his condition, so I asked him to see a doctor. But then he became angry and we had a big argument. He told me that I was putting even more press on him by talking about his spots all the time. In the end, I sent him to his room. He finally calmed down, but it took some time.
The whole experience was really terrible and I do not want to go through the same thing again. What should I do?
Best wishes,
Mrs. Zhang
读后续写范文
Para.1: “My little son has benefited from the transplant operation and I want to pass the kindness on,” Joyce Smith said. Joyce’s little son was a transplant recipient years ago. He got the gift of life in the form of a kidney transplant. “I want to do an act of kindness. I love this kind of action because it might make a total difference in the lives of others. It was my first act of kindness, and I really want to continue.” Joyce Smith added, smilingly.
Para. 2: What's crazier is that Joyce Smith was a perfect match for Valerie Scott. Usually, it's hard to find the right match because you don’t just need a willing donor. The donor and the receiver need to have the same blood type. Luckily, Joyce was a perfect match for Valerie Scott. More fortunate is that the operation was successful. Valerie Scott was becoming healthy slowly. The two strangers became life-long friends and developed a close relationship.

M: Well, I am an expert when it comes to my job. Accounting is a respectable job and one that I am always happy to talk about.
W: Dad, I know how much you love your job. It isn’t that I don’t admire you. But what I was hoping actually, was that you could speak to Mr. Chang, your diving friend, and see if he would agree to an interview. Diving for a living sounds cool!
M: I see. That’s a great idea! You know how I really dislike talking about myself again and again for too long, Let me give David Chang a call right now and find out.
W: Thanks, Dad! I know this will be a wonderful project!
(Text 10)
W: And here I am at the city stadium and the sun is shining. And eventually the players are coming onto the play field. As I was saying earlier there were such terrible traffic jams in the city today that the ma tch is starting late. M ost of the football fans have been waiting patiently in their seats since two o’clock but now as the players come out they’re cheering happily. And the whistle goes. Rossi has the ball and is running steadily down the field but, oh, no, the game has hardly started ---- only two minutes have gone and he’s fallen heavily on the ground. Luckily he was
not injured, but Hank has the ball instead. Now Parker is running quickly towards the goal to take the ball from Hank. He is playing well. It’s often Parker who shoots that important goal. And he has, he’s scored! And the crowd is shouting really loudly so it’s difficult to make myself heard. That was a wonderful goal by him.
