Two baby elephants were two years old and they had escaped from the herd for a fun ride as they were always under discipline (训导) from the elder ones. But Arjun was sympathetic towards the two young fellows and he went near them and gently touched them with his trunk and licked (舔) their genital parts and assured them of being calm. Magically we saw how the young fellows who were in sad found hope.
Soon both of them showed affection for each other through licking and touching each other through their trunks and tails. Then they were simply guided by Arjun towards the lorry like obedient students. That is how Arjun exhibited very strong passionate love and obeyed his master's order.

The African elephant, the largest land animal remaining on earth, is of great importance to the African ecosystem. Unlike other animals, the African elephant is to a great extent the builder of its environment. As a big plant?eater, it largely shapes the forest?and?savanna (稀树草原) surroundings in which it lives, therefore setting_the_terms of existence of millions of other animals that live in its habitat.
It is the elephant's great desire for food that makes it a changer of the environment and an important builder of its habitat. In its continuous search for the 300 pounds of plants it must have every day, it kills small trees and undergrowth, and pulls branches off big trees. This results in numerous open spaces both in deep tropical forests and in the woodlands that cover part of the African savannas. In these open spaces are numerous plants in various stages of growth that attract a variety of other plant璭aters.
Take the rain forests for example. In their natural state, the spreading branches overhead shut out sunlight and prevent the growth of plants on the forest floor. By pulling down trees and eating plants, elephants make open spaces, allowing new plants to grow on the forest floor. In such situations, the forests become suitable for large hoofed (有蹄的) plant?eaters to move around and for small plant?eaters to get their food as well.
What worries scientists now is that the African elephant has become an endangered species. If the elephant disappears, scientists say, many other animals will also disappear from vast areas of the forest and savanna, greatly changing and worsening the whole ecosystem.

Scientists investigated why the Ebola virus is so deadly when it spreads from animals to humans and then by human?to?human contact. The research team looked at the Zaire Ebola virus in an animal system to understand how it gained strength. This virus is responsible for the current outbreak in West Africa. They found that initially (最初) the animal systems were not affected by the virus, but succeeding transmission (传播) into other animals caused the virus to “hot up” and become more severe.
The team analyzed the viruses at different stages and were able to identify several changes in its genetic material that were associated with increased disease.
Professor Julian Hiscox, who led the study from Liverpool University's Institute of Infection and Global Health, explained, 揟he work tells us that the evolutionary goal of the Ebola virus is to become more fatal.
揥e were able to show through genetic analysis which parts of the virus are involved in this process. The information we have gathered will allow us to monitor such changes in an outbreak as well as develop future treatment strategies.
Professor Roger Hewson, leading the study from Public Health England, Porton Down, said, 揟he Ebola virus is such a destructive infection to the people affected by the disease and the economy of West Africa.
揙ur understanding of the Ebola virus biology is way behind that of other viruses and our cooperation shows how we can get our specialists' skills together to close this knowledge gap.

Scientists have long struggled with how to measure the effects of climate change on wildlife. This is especially true for birds flying in and out of coastal areas bordering the Arctic Ocean.
In the past, researchers depended mainly on information gathered by satellite to follow the movement of birds and animals. But this method can be costly and result in huge amounts of information, which can be difficult to process.
Now scientists are turning to another kind of technology to help them follow birds and other wildlife. Songbirds are especially difficult to study in the wild. They can fly across thousands of kilometers and their bodies are too small for electronic tracking equipment. A new report tells about a project in which researchers recorded songbirds and then put the sounds into a computer program to be studied.
Birds are known to make more singing noises after arriving in areas where they plan to mate. Spring is short in extreme northern areas of the American state of Alaska. There, the birds must mate and have their young before winter. A algorithm (计算程序) is designed to use the recordings to predict when the birds arrive in large groups to begin mating.
While some results were produced completely by machine, human supervision (监督) helped to improve the process. In both cases, the researchers reported the computer was correct in predicting when the birds arrived to their breeding grounds.
In another study, researchers reported how machine learning methods can be used to identify, count and describe animals in the wild. Researchers created a machine learning system that they say uses artificial intelligence or AI to identify, count, and describe the behavior of 48 animal species. They said their method can correctly identify animals at a rate of 94 percent.
The scientists said results showed AI can be used as an effective way to gather 揳 wealth of information on huge numbers of animals in the wild. They say the new method will save time and costs, and can even operate in real?time.
