1945年，美国战略服务处为在旧金山召开的“联合国家国际组织会议”设计了一枚联合国“国徽”。整个徽记是一幅以北极点为中心、方位角等距离的平面投影世界地图。地图上的陆地为淡蓝色，水域为白色，其8条经线延伸至南纬60°，纬线由5个同心圆表示。图案由两根交叉的金色橄榄枝组成的花环相托，象征世界和平。“国徽”上还有联合国的名称缩写“ＵＮ”。
橄榄枝的含义是和平。为什么用橄榄枝象征和平呢？这里面有着一个“诺亚方舟”的神话传说。在远古的时候，一天，上帝发觉人类的道德意识越来越糟，简直到了不可救药的地步，十分生气于是决定用洪水把人类全部吞没。但到四面八方仔细查访，最后了解到有一对叫诺亚的夫妇道德良好，结果上帝把生存的权利赐给了他俩。上帝令人通知诺亚夫妇，准备一只方形大木船，备足干粮和饮水，并挑选各种动物一起载到船上。洪水来时，世界上的生物都未能逃脱这场灾难，只有诺亚的方舟仍旧在水上漂流。过了很长时间，洪水渐渐消退，远处出现了高山、岛屿、陆地。诺亚夫妇很高兴，就将船上的一对鸽子放飞，给它们以自由。不久，鸽子飞回来了，并衔着一根翠绿色的橄榄枝，意味着大地恢复了生机，一切都归于和平。
