Donna
Strickland
was
awarded
the
2018
Nobel
Prize
in
Physics
jointly
with
Arthur

for
their
work.
It's
the
first
time
in
55
years
that
a
woman
has
won
this
celebrated
prize,
but
why
has
it
taken
so
long?
We
look
at
four
other
pioneering
female
scientists
—
past
and
present
—
who
had
a
genuine
claim
to
the
prize.
Lene

in
1999
that
managed

before
managing
to
stop
it
completely
in
2001.
Often
topping
Nobel

prediction
lists,
could
2019
be
Hau's
year?
Chien?Shiung

Chien?Shiung
Wu's
“Wu

the
“law

,
a
fundamental

Her
experimental
work
was
instrumental
but
never
honoured,
and
instead,
her
male
colleagues
won
the
1957
Nobel
Prize
for
their
theoretical
work
behind
the
study.
Jocelyn

Perhaps
the
most
famous
absent

Burnell
discovered
the
first
radio

in
1967,
when
she

The
Nobel
Prize
that
recognised
this
great
discovery
in
1974,
however,
went
to
her
male
supervisor,
Antony

The
award
is
considered
one
of
the
most
unfair
in
the
history
of
the
Nobel
Prize,
so
even
some
people
called
it
“The
No
Bell
Nobel”.
Recently
awarded
a
£2.3?million
Breakthrough

she
joked:
“I

However,
the
discovery
was
acknowledged
by
the
1944
Nobel

was
the
Nobel
Prize
called
“The
No
Bell
Nobel”?
A.1944.
B.1957.
C.1967.
D.1974.
23.What
is
the
text
mainly
about?
A.Some
unfair
Nobel

B.Some
women
who
missed
the
Nobel
Prize.
C.The

Traditionally,
robots
have
been
hard,
made
of
metal
and
other
hard
material.
But
a
team
of
scientists
at
Harvard
University
in
the
US
has
managed
to
build
an
entirely
soft
robot
—
one
that
draws
inspiration
(灵感)
from
an
octopus
(章鱼).
Described
in
science
journal
Nature,
the
“Octobot”
could
pave
the
way
for
more
effective
autonomous
robots
that
could
be
used
in
the
search,
rescue
and
exploration.
“The
Octobot
is
a
minimal
system
which
may
serve
as
a
foundation
for
a
new
generation
of
completely
soft,
autonomous
robots,”
the
study's
authors
wrote.
Robots
built
for
precise,
repetitive
movements
in
a
controlled
environment
don't
do
so
well
on
the
rough
ground
or
in
unpredictable
conditions.
And
they
aren't
especially
safe
around
humans
because
they're
made
out
of
hard
and
heavy
parts
that
could
be
possibly
dangerous
to
their
users.
So
researchers
have
been
working
on
building
soft
robots
for
several
ten
years.
They've
taken
inspiration
from
nature,
looking
to
animals
from
jellyfish
to
cockroaches,
which
are
often
made
up
of
more
soft
matter.
But
creating
a
completely
soft
robot
remains
a
problem.
Even
if
engineers
build
a
silicone
(硅酮)
body,
it's
still
a
big
challenge
to
make
soft
versions
of
essential
parts,
such
as
a
source
of
power.
“Although
soft
robotics
is
still
in
its
early
stage,
it
holds
great
prospects
for
several
applications,
such
as
searches
and
rescue
operations
and
exploration”,
Barbara
Mazzolai
and
Virgilio
Mattoli
of
the
Italian
Institute
of
Technology's
Center
for
Micro?BioRobotics
wrote.
“Soft
robots
might
also
open
up
new
ways
to
improving
wellness
and
the
quality
of
life.”
24.What's
the
special
feature
of
the
Octobot?
A.It's
completely
soft.
B.It's
made
of
hard
metal.
C.It's
very
small.
D.It
looks
like
an
octopus.
25.What's
the
disadvantage
of
traditional
robots?
A.They're
hard
to
control.
B.They're
too
heavy
to
be
moved.
C.They
can't
predict
conditions.
D.They
can't
behave
well
all
the
time.
26.One
of
the
biggest
difficulties
is
to
build
soft
robots'
________.
A.silicone
body
B.complex
parts
C.precise
movements
D.soft
power
source
27.What's
the
possible
application
of
the
Octobot?
A.Medical
research.
B.Life
rescue.
C.Machine
operation.
D.House
cleaning.
C
More
and
more
people
around
the
world
are
living
in
city
areas
and
the
need
for
high?quality
fresh
food
is
rising.
At
the
same
time,
new
homes,
apartment
buildings,
shopping
centers
and
roads
are
taking
the
place
of
rich
land
near
cities.
That
makes
growing
crops
in
tall
buildings
an
interesting
solution.
In
Dallas,
Texas,
a
company
called
Green
Habitat
Hydroponics
(GHH)
sells
vertical
farming
supplies.
“You
can
control
anything
and
everything
you
want
to
with
hydroponics
—
the
process
of
growing
plants
in
sand,
small
stones
or
water
with
added
nutrients
(营养物)
but
not
soil,”
Kris
Maxwell,
a
sales
employee
at
GHH
said.
“For
example,
certain
plants
need
certain
nutrients
and
pH
levels.
But
don't
worry.
You
can
change
the
hydroponics
solutions
(溶液)
by
adding
or
taking
away
nutrients,
or
by
changing
the
PH
level,
or
even
by
controlling
the
amount
of
water
in
a
solution,
so
that
plants
get
all
the
nutrients
and
water
requirements
they
need.
There
are
even
different
solutions
for
certain
stages
in
the
plants'
growth.”
In
this
indoor
environment,
LED
lights,
which
are
environmentally
friendly,
replace
the
sun.
Heaters,
coolers,
special
machines
control
the
temperature
and
humidity
(湿度).
Up
to
300
plants
can
grow
in
one
container
unit.
GHH
also
sells
aeroponic
systems.
With
this
system,
plants
are
placed
in
huge
containers
where
only
the
roots
are
put
in
a
solution.
Nutrient?rich
wastes
from
fish,
for
example,
are
filtered
and
sent
through
the
system.
The
good
thing
about
this
method
is
that
no
fertilizers
have
to
be
used
because
the
fish
produce
all
of
the
necessary
nutrients.
Another
advantage
of
vertical
farming
is
that
no
pests
will
damage
your
crops.
What
do
you
think?
Does
vertical
farming
have
a
bright
future?
28.Which
of
the
following
may
not
be
the
reason
for
vertical
farming?
A.The
earth
has
to
support
more
and
more
people.
B.Many
people
nowadays
are
flowing
into
cities.
C.People
show
greater
interest
in
eating
fresh
food.
D.The
fields
for
growing
crops
near
cities
are
reducing
day
by
day.
29.As
for
vertical
farming,
what
can
be
used
to
take
the
place
of
the
sunshine?
A.Heaters.
B.Coolers.
C.Air
conditioning
machines.
D.Light
from
a
kind
of
bulb.
30.The
underlined
word
“filtered”
in
the
fourth
paragraph
can
be
replaced
by
“________”.
A.balanced
B.destroyed
C.removed
D.created
31.What
is
the
advantage
of
aeroponic
systems
used
in
vertical
farming?
A.They
may
bring
about
a
good
harvest.
B.There
is
no
need
for
chemical
nutrients.
C.People
can
get
delicious
food.
D.They
can
save
energy.
D
You
carry
1.3
kg
fatty
material
in
your
head
that
controls
everything
you
will
ever
do.
This
fantastic
control
center
lets
you
think,
learn,
create,
and
feel
emotions.
It
also
controls
everything
your
body
does.
What
is
this
amazing
machine?
It's
your
brain
—
a
structure
so
amazing
that
the
famous
scientist
James
Watson
called
it
“the
most
complex
thing
we
have
yet
discovered
in
our
universe”.
Imagine
your
cat
jumped
onto
the
kitchen
counter,
and
was
about
to
step
onto
a
hot
stove.
You
would
have
only
few
seconds
to
act.
In
situations
like
this,
your
brain
reads
the
signals
from
your
eyes
and
quickly
calculates
when,
where
and
at
what
speed
you
need
to
run
to
save
her.
Then
it
tells
your
muscles
to
move.
No
computer
can
match
your
brain's
great
ability
to
download,
process,
and
react
to
the
flood
of
information
from
your
eyes,
ears
and
other
sensory
organs.
If
a
bee
lands
on
your
foot,
sensory
neurons
(感觉神经元)
in
your
skin
send
this
information
to
your
brain
at
a
speed
of
more
than
240
kilometers
per
hour.
Your
brain
then
uses
motor
neurons
(运动神经元)
to
send
a
message
back
to
your
foot:
Shake
the
bee
off
quickly!
Motor
neurons
can
send
this
information
at
more
than
320
kilometers
per
hour!
Your
brain
has
about
100
billion
tiny
cells:
neurons
—
it
would
take
you
more
than
3,000
years
if
you
tried
to
count
them
all.
Whenever
you
dream,
laugh,
think,
see
or
move,
tiny
chemical
and
electrical
signals
are
racing
between
these
neurons
along
billions
of
tiny
neuron
pathways.
Believe
it
or
not,
the
activity
in
your
brain
never
stops.
Countless
messages
fly
around
inside
it
every
second,
like
a
super?fast
game
of
table
tennis.
Your
neurons
create
and
send
more
messages
than
all
the
phones
in
the
entire
world.
And
although
a
single
neuron
produces
only
a
tiny
amount
of
electricity,
all
your
neurons
together
can
produce
enough
electricity
to
power
a
light
bulb.
32.What
does
“the
most
complex
thing”
mean?
A.A
supercomputer.
B.Human
brains.
C.The
universe.
D.Our
emotions.
33.What
can
we
know
from
the
passage?
A.Brains
can
download
more
information
than
any
computer.
B.The
cat
plays
an
important
role
in
testing
human
brain
power.
C.Motor
neurons
in
human
brains
serve
to
send
messages.
D.Your
brains
can
use
neurons
to
send
messages
back
faster
than
bees'.
34.The
author
mentions
“to
power
a
light
bulb”
in

A.neurons
can
create
lots
of
messages
B.how
many
active
tiny
cells
the
brain
have
C.how
much
electricity
the
brain
can
produce
D.there
is
countless
information
in
the
brain
35.What
is
the
main
idea
of
the
passage?
A.The
powerful
brain
is
a
wonderful
machine.
B.Brains
work
well
in
controlling
body
movements.
C.The
brain
is
the
most
complex
structure
in
the

now
you're
not
a
child
anymore.
In
fact,
there
are
many
advantages
of
talking
to
strangers.
●You
can
meet
a

great
person.
Talking
to
a
stranger
is
a
good
habit
because
you
never
know
whom
you
may
meet.
__36__
You

give
you
a
chance
to
get
your
dream
job.
●__37__
You
have
some
opinion
about
different
subjects
and
you
know
your
friends'
and
relatives'
points
of
view
about
them,
too.
But
there
are
millions
of
other
people
who
think
differently

give
you
unpredictable
yet
smart
ideas
that
will
broaden
your
horizons.
●You
can
improve
your
social
skills.
__38__
Asking
appropriate
questions
and
attentive
listening
are
two
skills
that
many
of
us
don't
have.
You
can
better
these
skills
when
talking
to
a
stranger.
●You
can
offer
someone
comfort.
The
thing
you'll
definitely
like
about
talking
to
strangers
is
that
you
can
make
someone's
day
better.
__39__
Praise
people
and
they
will
think
something
pleasant
about
you.
Having
a
sweet
short
dialogue
is
one
of
those
perfect
chances
to
make
people
cheerful.
●You
can
find
the
solutions
you
didn't
know
about.
Talking
to
someone
you

may
have
some
problems
that
you
can't
solve
for
a
long
time.

you
suddenly
meet
can
figure
out
the
right
solution
you
didn't
even
think
about
before.__40__
A.You
can
expand
your
world
view.
B.Smile
and
people
will
smile
in
return.
C.Why
not
speak
to
someone
until
your
turn
comes?
D.It
may
be
the
help
you
needed
to
get
a
long
time
ago.

shouldn't
miss
these
unexpected
chances
of
meeting
people.
F.You
can
meet
a
person
who
will
become
your
best
friend
in
the
future.
G.Whatever
social
skills
you
have,
you
can
make
them
better
when
talking
to
strangers.

第二节 概要写作(满分25分)
阅读下面短文,根据其内容写一篇60词左右的内容概要。
The
nicer
their
neighborhood
sidewalks
are,
the
more
active
people
will
be,
according
to
a
new
study
from
Detroit.
“While
a
number
of
studies
have
looked
at
the
presence
of
sidewalks
and
their
association
(关联)
with
physical
activity,
very
few
have
examined
the
condition
of
the
sidewalks,”
said
Jamila
L.
Kwarteng,
who
led
the
new
study.
Kwarteng
and
her
co?workers
studied
919
adults
in
poor
and
middle?class
neighborhoods
in
Detroit,
asking
them
how
much
they
exercised
and
how
often.
The
researchers
also
walked
around
the
neighborhoods
and
studied
the
condition
of
sidewalks
and
streets.
According
to
the
results,
people
who
lived
near
more
uneven
(不平坦的)
sidewalks
would
be
less
active.
That
was
especially
the
case
for
younger
people,
“We
found
that
better
sidewalk
condition
was
associated
with
increases
in
physical
activity
among
women
and
men,”
Kwarteng
said.
Kwarteng
said
although
it's
possible
that
sidewalk
condition
affects
how
much
time
people
spend
outside
being
active,
it's
only
one
way.
“Another
reason
for
the
result
is
that
people
hating
physical
activity
choose
to
live
in
neighborhoods
that
are
run?down
(破旧的),”
Kwarteng
said.
“Maybe
that's
because
it's
less
expensive
to
live
there.”
Following
a
neighborhood
over
a
long
time
and
seeing
if
activity
levels
change
with
sidewalk
condition
would
be
a
better
way
of
understanding
how
much
effect
the
sidewalks
have.
“This
study
makes
sure
an
association
between
sidewalk
condition
and
physical
activity,”
Kwarteng
said.
“Further
studies
should
try
to
explain
why
this
is.”
Most
homeowners
with
the
freedom
to
choose
between
neighborhoods
will
probably
pick
the
one
in
better
condition.
“Good
living
environments
should
be
available
to
all
people,”
Kwarteng
said.
“Cities
should
implement
(贯彻)
policies
that
keep
sidewalks
in
good
condition
to
increase
physical
activity
among
people.”

I
was
wondering

I

have

M:Sure.
The
only
problem
is
that
I
have
to
go
to
another

at

am.
Could
you
come
to
my
office
to
take
the

for
me
before

W:Yeah,
that
would
work.
Where
is
your

sir?
M:It's
on
the

of
the
office

You
pass
by
the

W:Really?
You
don't

I

everyone
had
a

M:No,
I've
lived
in

my

when
I
go

I
am

W:
Italian
food,
such
as
pizza
and
pasta,
is
famous
all
over
the
world.
But
are
they
real
Italian
food?
M:Of
course
we
eat
pizza
and
pasta,
but
we
also
eat
a
lot
of
other
things.
Most
meals
in
Italy
have
at
least
three
or
four
courses,
but
special
meals
have
up
to
nine
courses.
W:Nine
courses!
M:Yes.
These
kinds
of
meals
lasted
for
several
hours,
and
they
were
always
spent
drinking
wine
with
family
and
friends.
W:What
did
such
meal
include?
M:Normally
a
little
wine,
and
then
some
snacks.
This
is
followed
by
a
soup
or
pasta,
and
then
a
main
dish
of
fish
or
meat.
The
main
dish
also
comes
with
a
salad
or
vegetables.
We
then
enjoy
a
first
dessert
of
cheeses
and
fruits,
and
then
a
second
dessert
of
cakes
or
cookies.
We
then
drink
coffee,
and
finally
a
little
other
drink.
W:Wow!
Sounds
like
an
ideal
meal.
No
wonder
Italian
food
is
so
popular.

The
best
time
to
enjoy
a
music
festival
is
summer.
Each
year
Europe
offers
thousands
of
summer
festivals.
Now,
let's

at
some
of
them.
Exit
is
an

summer
music

It
is
held
in
the
city
of
Novi
Sad,
Serbia,
every
year.
Exit
is
special
in
the
festival
world,
because
it
started
as
a
student
movement
fighting
for
peace
in
Serbia.
Tomorrow
Land
is
the
largest
electronic
music
festival
in
the
world.
It
is
held
in
a
small
town
in
Belgium.
Every
year
the
festival
organizers
spend
a
long
time
decorating
the
stages.
For
example,
in
2011,
Tomorrow
Land
took
on
an
“Alice
in
Wonderland”

its
main

There
were
big
oak
trees,
mushrooms
and
waterfalls
on
the
stage.
Roskilde

a
week?long
music
and
culture
event.
It
was
created
in
1971
by
two
high
school
students
in
Denmark.
And
now
it
has
become
a
well?known
music

in
