My color television has given me nothing but a headache. I was able to buy it a little over a year ago because I had my relatives give me money for my birthday instead of clothes that wouldn抰 fit. I let a salesclerk fool me into buying a discontinued model. I realized this a day later, when I saw newspaper advertisements for the set at seventy-five dollars less than I had paid. The set worked so beautiful when I first got it home that I would keep it on until stations signed off for the night. Fortunately, I didn抰 get any channels showing all-night movies or I would never have gotten to bed.
Then I started developing a problem with the set that involved static(静电) noise. For some reason, when certain shows switched into a commercial, a loud noise would sound for a few seconds. Gradually, this noise began to appear during a show, and to get rid of it, I had to change to another channel and then change it back. Sometimes this technique would not work, and I had to pick up the set and shake it to remove the sound. I actually began to build up my arm muscles(肌肉) shaking my set.
When neither of these methods removed the static noise, I would sit helplessly and wait for the noise to go away. At last I ended up hitting the set with my first, and it stopped working altogether. My trip to the repair shop cost me $62, and the set is working well now, but I keep expecting more trouble.
4. Why did the author say he was fooled into buying the TV set?
A. He got an older model than he had expected. B. He couldn抰 return it when it was broken.
C. He could have bought it at a lower price. D. He failed to find any movie shows on it.
5 Which of the following can best replace the phrase 搒igned off in paragraph 1?
A. Ended all their programs B. Provided fewer channels
C. Changed to commercials D. Showed all-night movies
6. How did the author finally get this TV set working again?
A. By shaking and hitting it B. By turning it on and off
C. By switching channels D. By having it repaired
7. How does the author sound when telling the story?
A. Curious B. Anxious C. Cautious D. Humorous

The American newspaper has been around for about three hundred years. In 1721, the printer James Franklin, Benjamin's older brother, started the New England Courant, and that was what we might recognize today as a real newspaper. He filled his paper with stories of adventure, articles on art, on famous people, and on all sorts of political subjects.
Three centuries after the appearance of Franklin's Courant, few believe that newspapers in their present printed form will remain alive for long. Newspaper companies are losing advertisers (广告商), readers, market value, and, in some cases, their sense of purpose at a speed that would not have been imaginable just several years ago. The chief editor (主编)of the Times said recently, "At places where they gather, editors ask one another, 'How are you?', as if they have just come out of the hospital or a lost law case. 揂n article about the newspaper appeared on the website of the Guardian, under the headline 揘OT DEAD YET.
Perhaps not, but the rise of the Internet, which has made the daily newspaper look slow and out of step with the world, has brought about a real sense of death. Some American newspapers have lost 42% of their market value in the past three years. The New York Times Company has seen its stock(股票) drop by 54% since the end of 2004, with much of the loss coming in the past year. A manager at Deutsche Bank suggested that stock-holders sell off their Times stock. The Washington Post Companies has prevented the trouble only by changing part of its business to education; its testing and test-preparation service now brings in at least half the company's income.
8. What can we learn about the New England Courant?
A. It is mainly about the stock market.
B. It marks the beginning of the American newspaper.
C. It remains a successful newspaper in America.
D. It comes articles by political leaders.
9. What can we infer about the newspaper editors?
A. They often accept readers' suggestions
B. They care a lot about each other's health.
C. They stop doing business with advertisers.
D. They face great difficulties in their business.
10. Which of the following found a new way for its development?
A. The Washington Post B. The Guardian
C. The New York Times. D. New England Courant
11. How does the author seem to feel about the future of newspapers?
A. Satisfied B. Hopeful C. Worried D. Surprised
D
People from East Asia tend to have more difficulty than those from Europe in distinguishing facial expressions — and a new report published online in Current Biology explains why.
Rachael Jack, University of Glasgow researcher, said that rather than scanning evenly(均匀的) across a face as Westerners do, Easterners fix their attention on the eyes.
"We show that Easterners and Westerners look at different face features to read facial expressions," Jack said. "Westerners look at the eyes and the mouth in equal measure, whereas Easterners favor the eyes and neglect (忽略) the mouth."
According to Jack and her colleagues, the discovery shows that human communication of emotion is more complex than previously believed. As a result, facial expressions that had been considered universally recognizable cannot be used to reliably convey emotion in cross-cultural situations.
The researchers studied cultural differences in the recognition of facial expressions by recording the eye movements of 13 Western Caucasian and 13 East Asian people while they observed pictures of expressive faces and put them into categories: happy, sad, surprised, fearful, disgusted, angry, or neutral. They compared how accurately participants read those facial expressions using their particular eye movement strategies.
It turned out that Easterners focused much greater attention on the eyes and made significantly more errors than did Westerners. "The cultural difference in eye movements that they show is probably a reflection of cultural difference in facial expressions," Jack said. "Our data suggest that whereas Westerners use the whole face to convey emotion, Easterners use the eyes more and mouth less."
In short, the data show that facial expressions are not universal signals of human emotion. From here on, examining how cultural factors have diversified these basic social skills will help our understanding of human emotion. Otherwise, when it comes to communicating emotions across cultures, Easterners and Westerners will find themselves lost in translation.
12. The discovery shows that Westerners _________________.
A. pay equal attention to the eyes and the mouth
B. consider facial expressions universally reliable
C. observe the eyes and the mouth in different ways
D. have more difficulty in recognizing facial expressions
13. What were the people asked to do in the study?
A. To make a face at each other. B. To get their faces impressive.
C. To classify some face pictures. D. To observe the researchers' faces.
14. In comparison with Westerners, Easterners are likely to__________ .
A. do translation more successfully B. study the mouth more frequently
C. examine the eyes more attentively D. read facial expressions more correctly
15. What can be the best title for the passage?
A. The Eye as the Window to the Soul
B. Cultural Differences in Reading Emotions
C. Effective Methods to Develop Social Skills
D. How to Increase Cross-cultural Understanding

Dear Mike,
It's great to hear from you. You asked me about my daily life and now I will tell you something about it.
Since I graduated from college two years ago, I have found a job of doing paperwork in an advertising company, which takes up all my time. It is a dream to switch on TV with a remote control for me to enjoy my favorite play. It seems that there are always urgent documents to deal with, which makes me feel stressed. Though I am bored with this lifestyle, I have to put up with it because it is difficult to find a job for a young man now. To tell you the truth, I prefer to be a volunteer rather than suffer the reduction of social activities. Some employees often work until midnight like me.
Can you tell me something about your daily life? I’m looking forward to your reply.
Yours,
Li Hua
