When I was in college, I remember hearing about a book titled Looking Out for Number One. I never read the book, but the title has always stuck with me. I think it was because the title turned_me_off. I hadn't been taught to be so selfish that I should focus on only myself. I thought I needed to be helping others and, along the way, I would also be helping myself. Now, I realise I should have at least considered learning more about looking out for number one.
Over 30 years after seeing the book about looking out for number one, I'm realising number one, me, is the person I should be concerned about first. Jeffrey Gitomer asks the question, “Who is the most important person in the world?” Most people answer, the customer. He then asks, if there were only two people left in the world, the customer and you, who would you want to survive? Now the answer is me.
It makes sense that if we can't help ourselves first, we will never be prepared to help others. We all need to learn to control our lives and make the best decisions for ourselves. That will put us in a position to help others in the future. But many of us are slow to understand this.
It has been said that happiness will bring success, but success doesn't always bring happiness. We all want to be happy and successful. For some of us we can be very happy when our basic needs are met and our family are safe. Others will seek for high levels of success thinking that that will bring happiness. I'm sure we can think of a person who is very successful, according to the world's standards(标准), but they don't appear to be happy at all. This is because they have been so busy working for somebody else's goals that they haven't considered their own needs.
24.The underlined words “turned me off” in Paragraph 1 probably mean “________”.
A.made me excited B.made me bored
C.made me surprised D.made me pleased
25.Who does the writer think is the most important person in the world now?
A.Others. B.Himself.
C.The customer. D.Jeffrey Gitomer.
26.From the third paragraph we can learn ________.
A.we should help others instead of ourselves
B.we need help others make the best decisions
C.helping others can help control our lives
D.actually few of us understand this idea earlier
27.Why do some successful people not feel happy at all?
A.Because they don't believe success always brings happiness.
B.Because their basic needs are not completely met.
C.Because they seek for too high levels of success.
D.Because they haven't been working for their own goals.
C
Music is not just a set of sounds and rhythms. Its influence on the brain is much deeper than any other human experiences. Keep on reading to know all the amazing power of music.
A recent study suggested that preterm (早产的) babies appeared to experience less pain and feed more when listening to music. Experts led by Dr. Manoj Kumar of the University of Alberta, Canada, found that music had a beneficial effect on reducing the pain of preterm babies when experiencing painful medical tests. It also appeared to benefit full璽erm babies during operations.
Many people experiencing brain damage often have speech and movement璻elated problems. Music can help them recover from brain injuries. As a different and effective treatment, doctors often advise such patients to listen to good music to improve the parts of the brain responsible for these two functions. When people with neurological (神经系统的) disorders hear a musical beat, it helps them regain a balanced walk.
Though music cannot make deafness disappear, it really can stave_off the loss of hearing. There was an experiment involving 163 people, 74 of whom were musicians. Participants were asked to do some listening tests. Musicians heard the sounds better than non璵usicians, and this difference got clearer with age. This means that a 70瓂ear璷ld musician hears better than a 50瓂ear璷ld non璵usician, even in a noisy environment.
Besides, music can mend a broken heart. It is not about a thrown璦way love, but about a heart attack. The matter is that music can help people recover from a heart attack or a heart operation by reducing blood pressure, slowing down the heartbeat rate and reducing anxiety. Listening to quality music produces positive emotions, improves the movement of blood and expands blood vessels, thus promoting quick recovery of the whole cardiovascular (心血管的) system.
28.How does music affect preterm babies?
A.It helps reduce their pain. B.It helps develop their potential in music.
C.It helps improve their hearing systems. D.It helps repair their neurological systems.
29.What does the underlined phrase “stave off” in Paragraph 4 mean?
A.Lead to. B.Increase.
C.Prevent. D.Break into.
30.Why can music mend a broken heart?
A.Because it has a positive effect on human body systems' work.
B.Because it can help people prevent diseases caused by anxiety.
C.Because it helps make a person feel optimistic about life.
D.Because it can help patients recover in a slow way.
31.What may be the best title for the text?
A.Who can benefit from music B.The best time to listen to music
C.The way to choose quality music D.How music affects our mind and body
D
Are you preparing for a big test? If so, you may want to go playing some basketball in between hitting the books. Doctors are starting to find more and more information that suggests a connection between exercise and brain development. Judy Cameron, a scientist at Oregon Health and Science University, studies brain development. According to her research, it seems that exercise can make blood vessels (血管), including those in the brain, stronger and more fully developed. Dr. Cameron is sure that this allows people who exercise to think better. As she says, 搘hile we already know that exercise is good for the heart, exercise can actually cause physical changes in the brain.
The effects of exercise on brain development can even be seen in babies. Babies who do activities that require a lot of movement and physical activity show greater brain development than babies who are less physically active. Even a little movement can show big results. Margaret Barnes, a scientist, also believes in the importance of exercise. She thinks that many learning disabilities that children have in primary school or high school can result from a lack of movement as babies. 揃abies need movement that encourages and excites their five senses. They need to set up a connection between motion and memory. In this way, as they get older, children will begin to connect physical activity with higher learning,” says Margaret.
Older people can develop their brains as well. Cornell University studied a group of seniors who have a shortterm memory increase of up to 40 percent after exercising just three hours a week. The exercise does not have to be very difficult, but it does have to increase the heart rate. Also, just like the motion for babies, exercise for older people should not be too simple. Learning some new skills or actions, such as with yoga or tai璫hi helps to open up memory paths in the brain that may not have been used for a long time. For most people, any type of physical activity that increases the heart rate is helpful. The main aim is to increase the brain's flow of blood. And your brain can benefit from as little as two to three hours of exercise a week.
32.What is the connection between exercise and brain development?
A.Exercise helps make our blood vessels.
B.Physical exercise helps us think better.
C.Exercise prevents us having brain diseases.
D.More physical exercises enlarge our brains.
33.How can exercise affect babies?
A.Whether they are excited or not depends on movements.
B.A lack of movement results from their learning disabilities.
C.The more frequently they move, the cleverer they become.
D.The more activities they do, the greater their brains develop.
34.Why is yoga suggested for seniors?
A.It helps them memorise quicker. B.It decreases the heart rate.
C.It includes learning new actions. D.It can be done in groups.
35.What is the smallest amount of exercise required to gain any benefit?
A.3 hours per week. B.4.2 hours per week.
C.1 hour per day. D.40 hours per month.

My husband and I traveled a lot. We had a horse, a wonderful horse called Dusty. We were out of town when a one?hundred?mile horse_race went right past the road in front of my house. My horse wanted to compete in the race, so she jumped over the fence (栅栏) and left quickly.
The next day my_husband_and_I came back home. We found a note on the front door from the police. It said that my horse had gone back to the barn (牲口棚)on the other side of town. She had been born there eighteen years before. So we drove there. It was a lovely old farm and it was owned then by people I didn't know.
The new owners were a man, his wife, and their children, two little girls aged seven and five. We saw Dusty was in the barn. When the_little_girls got up that morning, they started screaming (尖叫), their father said. That was because at the top of the hill, with the sun rising, was this beautiful horse. They attracted her to the barn. They spent the day brushing her and treating her a lot.
The seven?year?old girl turned to me. She said, “Can I ride her before you take her back?”I said yes. And then I went to a store and bought a bottle of apple juice. When I returned, they told me they had always wished for a horse. But their parents really didn't have the money for one, which made them give up the dream.
I told them I was going to give them Dusty. And wanted them to make_a_promise. Someday when they grow up,they each may find a little girl—a little girl they don't know—and give her some very special gifts that she is always looking forward to.

Dear Peter,
I have gladly received your letter telling me that you're interested in traditional Chinese musical instruments. Now, I'd like to tell you something about the Chinese Zither, one of the most ancient Chinese musical instruments with a long history of over 2,500 years.
The Chinese Zither is a plucked instrument and is played with both hands. In the early times it had 5 strings and has developed into 21 to 25 strings up to now.
The Chinese Zither has a wide range and sonorous sound, which is sometimes called “the Chinese piano”.
Enclosed with the letter is a CD of masterpieces of the Chinese Zither. I hope you'll enjoy it.
Best wishes!
Yours,
Li Hua

参考范文:
They agreed. How happy the two little girls were when they knew they could have Dusty! They fed the horse in the barn and then my_husband_and_I were invited to have lunch in their house. We accepted their invitation. Because of bad weather, the harvest was always poor, but the parents never gave up hope. They worked hard on the farm and tried their best to make the_little_girls live happily.
The seven?year?old girl told us her dreams. She said,“I was always dreaming of keeping a lovely pet, like Dusty and today the dream has come true. I make a promise to take good care of her. I will clean the barn every day. I have another dream—that is to compete in a horse_race. I think it must be really exciting,” When we left there, the little girls thanked us once again.
