Who is the greatest teacher in Chinese history? Many people would think of Confucius, whose birthday was September 28. Although he lived over 2,000 years ago, people still remembeir and respect him for his contribution(贡献) to the education today.
Confucius lived in the Kingdom of Lu, which lies in Shandong Province. He lived during the Spring and Autumn Period. He had a hard childhood. His father died when he was only 3. His mother brought him up. As a child, he had to work to help his mother, but young Confucius didn't give up studying. He visited many famous teachers and learned music, history. poetry and sports.
Later, he became a teacher and started the first public school in Chinese history. At that time, only children from noble families could go to school, but Confucius believed everyone should go to school if he or she wanted to learn. He had about 3,000 students in his lifetime.
Today people still follow Confucius' lessons. He told us that we all have something worthy to be learned "When I am with three people, one of them must be better than me in some areas. I choose their good qualities and follow them."
He also taught us that thinking is very important in study. "All study but no thinking makes people puzzled(困惑的). All thinking but no study makes people lazy."
Confucius is not only a great teacher, but also a famous thinker with wise thoughts about the world and society. His most important teachings are about kindness and good manners. "A person should be strict with himself or herself, but be kind to others," he said.

You might think that drinking fruit juice is healthy. But that's not quite true. A study published in a US medical journal(期刊) shows that drinking too much juice - even 100-per-cent natural fruit juice - will increase your risk of early death.
This is mainly because these drinks have a lot of sugar. According to scientists, drinking too much fruit juice is just like drinking too much soda(汽水) - they both have a lot of sugar. Taking in too much sugar can cause many health problems. Although there are also vitamins and minerals(矿物质) in fruit juice, they can't make up for the harm these drinks do.
Scientists found that if people get 10 per cent or more of their energy from sugary drinks every day, they will be 44 per cent more likely to die of heart disease and 14 per cent more likely to die of other diseases. This is why some cities in the US have raised prices for sugary drinks. This will make fewer people buy them As Jean Welsh, one of the researchers in the study, told CNN, "Sugary drinks. whether soft drinks or fruit juice, should be limited." But limited by how much? Scientists say kids between l and 6 years old should drink less than 170 mL of fruit juice a day. Adults and children older than 6 should not drink more than 230 mL a day.
Does this mean that eating fruit is also unhealthy? Fruit is still fine, when you eat 100 g of fruit, you're getting less sugar than if you drink l00 g of juice because the fruit has lots of fiber(纤维). it's better to eat the whole fruit and avoid fruit juice, if you can.
( )4. What will happen if people take in too much sugar every day?
A. They will lose some weight.
B. They will get fewer vitamins.
C. They might die of heart disease.
D. They might have sleep problems.
( )5. What do some US cities do to get people to drink fewer sugary drinks?
A. They increase the prices for fresh fruit.
B. They set higher prices for sugary drinks.
C. They close shops that sell sugary drinks.
D. They don't allow people to buy sugary drinks.
( )6. What does the passage mainly tell us?
A. Fruit juice is not as healthy as we think.
B. Drinking soda can cause many health problems.
C. Fruit juice is a kind of sugary drinks.
D. People take in too much sugar every day.

The Internet influences the way we shop, communicate with each other, find answers to questions and much more. But for some time, there have been concerns(担忧) that the older people are being left behind because they are unable to use a computer.
However, this is changing and several charities and community groups now help older people to get online Paul Robinson runs such a charity - Seniors Online. Paul worked for an IT company before deciding to leave his well-paid job and start the charity. As he explains, "I used to spend a few hours a week helping some older people use the Internet in the local library and I could see the difference it made to their lives. It can be quite lonely for the elderly when their children move away to find work and start a family of their own. Learning how to use email and receive photographs of their children and grandchildren was a wonderful experience for them. And when I saw what a big influence it had on their lives, I left my job and set up Seniors Online. We run training courses so that older people can enjoy the same chances as us."
One of Paul's students is 89-year-old Betty, who had never used a computer in her life before she joined one of the classes. That was six months ago and Betty has now completed the course and received her "graduation certificate(毕业证书)". "I joined a class so I could learn how to use email to keep in touch with members of my family, " she says. "That's fantastic but the best thing of all is learning how to research my family history online. Using a computer is a bit scary to begin with because you think you'll do something terrible if you press the wrong key. But you soon learn that you can't really break anything, and the teachers are very patient. I think all people of my age should attend a course like this. "

A. To help Paul to get money for his charity.
B. To describe how the Internet can be of help to older people.
C. To encourage children to keep in touch with their elderly parents.

I'II never forget that summer day in 1965 when my mother suddenly died of an unexplained illness at the age of 36. Later that afternoon, a police officer stopped by to ask my father if the hospital could use Mother's corneas(角膜). I was shocked. "The doctors want to dissect Mum and
give her away to other people! " I thought as I ran into the house in tears.
"How can you let them do that to her?" I screamed at my father. "My mum came into this world in one piece and that is how she should go out."
"Linda, " Father said quietly, putting his arm around me, "the greatest gift you can give is a part of yourself. Your mother and I decided long ago. that if we can make a difference in just one person's life after we die, our death will have meaning." He went on to explain they had both decided to donate their organs(器官).
The lesson my father taught me that day became one of the most important in my life.
Years passed. I married and had a family of my own. In 1980, my father became seriously ill and moved in with us. He cheerfully told me that when he died, he wanted me to donate his eyes. "Sight is one of the greatest gifts a person can give," he said.
I told Wendy what her grandpa had said, and with tears in her eyes, she went into her grandpa's room and gave him a big hug. She was only fourteen years old - the same age at which I was introduced to such a thing. What a difference!
My father died on April 11, 1986, and we donated his eyes as he had wanted. Three days later, Wendy said. "Mum, I'm so proud of Grandpa for what he did."
At that moment, I realized that my father gave much more than his eyes.

Mr Guo is a teacher from Xi'an. He asked his students to hand in their homework through a QR
code(二维码). "We spent an hour or two in class learning how to generate(使产生) the codes, and in the end everything gets easier," said Guo. "When students finish their homework, they keep it on WeChat. Then each student makes his or her own QR code and gives it to me. So I can check their work everywhere using my computer or cell phone. "
The QR codes can be sent to Mr Guo by email, QQ and WeChat. When Mr Guo scans(扫描) his students' QR codes, their homework appears on his phone. He finds that their homework becomes more creative, with many pictures, music and even videos.
Mr Guo's students like the new way and think it is interesting. "We are living in the information age. Many students like to work with computers, which makes learning more fun," said Tingting, a student of Mr Guo's.
"The paper is not easy to keep, but the code is easy to keep and share, " Mr Guo said. "It is worth trying to use new technology in education. Education itself is a kind of creation. I don't want my students to fall behind the times "
However, some parents are worried. They are afraid that their children will spend too much time on computers and less time communicating with teachers. But in fact, it's unnecessary. Students still need to look up information in books and write it down when they do their homework. They only use the codes when they hand in their work, which doesn't take them too much time. Also for teachers, it allows them to check the students' work at any time. And it's also an easy way to share homework with other students.
How can students send the QR codes to Mr Guo?

What are the advantages of the new way of handing in homework?

Do you think it is useful to have the new way of handing in homework? Why or why not?
