(2)appreciate用作“感激”之意时,其同义词为thank,但appreciate后跟“事”或“物”,而thank后跟“人”。

第1组两个句子的谓语动词要求跟v. ing形式作宾语。
第2组的两个句子,forget表示“忘记做过某事”,try表示“试图做某事”时,跟v. ing形式,但表示“忘记去做某事”,“尽力做某事”时跟to do形式。
第3组中的need和require跟v. ing的主动式表示被动的意思。

跟v. ing形式作宾语的动词
在英语中某些动词后只能接动名词作宾语,还有一些动词只能接动词不定式作宾语,还有一些动词后接动名词与动词不定式意义不同。
1.在某些动词后只能用动名词作宾语,这些动词有:admit,appreciate,consider,delay,enjoy,finish,keep,imagine,mind,miss,practise,resist,risk,save,suggest,mind,give up,insist on,put off等。
I suggest spending our summer vacation in a seaside town.
我建议在海边的城镇过我们的暑假。
You must give up smoking,for it does too much harm to your health.
你必须戒烟,因为它对你的健康造成很大的伤害。
2.介词后只能接动名词作宾语。
I should go to attend his birthday party instead of staying at home.
我应该去参加他的生日聚会,而不应待在家里。
3.need,require,want等后接动名词,表示被动意义。
Your handwriting needs improving(to be improved).
你的书法需要提高。
4.在某些动词后只能用动词不定式作宾语。这些动词有:ask,aim,arrange,choose,decide,demand,expect,fail,help,hope,manage,offer,plan,prepare,pretend,promise,refuse,wish等。
I decided to ask for my money back.

I wanted to go to Beijing when I was a little child.

5.某些动词后接动名词和不定式意思不一样。
(1)mean to do sth.打算做某事;mean doing sth.意味着某事。
I meant to catch up with the early bus.
我原来打算赶上早班公共汽车的。
This means wasting a lot of money.
这意味着浪费很多钱。
(2)try to do sth.设法/尽力做某事;try doing sth.试着做某事。
You should try to overcome your shortcomings.
你应该设法克服你的缺点。

(3)can’t help doing sth.禁不住做某事;can’t help to do sth.不能帮助做某事。

It is interesting to look at differences between schools in different countries.In many European countries,for example,the relationship between teachers and students is quite formal.This is true of France,Germany,and Spain,where discipline and respect for the teacher is considered very important.The same is true of Russia.
In northern European countries,however,the relationship between teachers and students is much friendlier and more relaxed.In America,students and teachers are quite relaxed with each other.In Britain,relationships are quite relaxed,but teachers can have big problems with discipline.
