We spend hours, days and years of our lives in education. But how perfect do you think your school is? Imagine you could design(设计) your ideal(理想的) school. What would it be like? We wanted to find out what teenagers around the world thought. Here is some designing from four children of different countries.
My dream school would have an Olympic-size swimming pool, two football pitches and a golf course. It would also have a cinema, a gym, a restaurant and a shopping centre. My school has none of these and I think there should be more enjoyable things for pupils to do while they are studying.
——Ma, China
I’d like a room where we can go and relax and play computer games and chat with friends. Some older pupils in the school have this but I think there should be a place for everyone to go when they want to switch off(转换注意力)from the lessons.
——Sonia, Italy
I think it would be great to have a day off every week,as well as the weekend. If that day was a Friday or a Monday, we would have a long weekend every week. What fun!I also think school should start later, at about 10 o’clock, and finish earlier. We spend a lot of time at school doing nothing at all. I’m sure we could learn just as much in fewer hours.
——Richard, USA
My dream school would be big and roomy with a computer for every person in the school. I’d also like to have a music room where we can just go and play instruments when we want. We need a recording studio, too. I hope that teachers can respect(尊重) our opinions.

Smart Phone, Poor Sight
Look around and you’ll see people busy on their smart phones. Smart phones do make our lives easier. But have you ever thought about what they mean to your eyes?
According to a study, half of British people own smart phones and they spend an average of two hours a day using them. There has been a 35% increase in the number of people in the UK who suffer from short-sightedness(近视) since smart phones were introduced there in 1997.
Staring(盯) at smart phones for long time gives you dry eyes. When looking at something in the distance, your eyes automatically blink(自动眨眼) a certain number of times.
However, when you look at things closer to your face, the blinking slows down. This reduces the amount of tears and causes discomfort in your eyes. This can do harm to the eyes and cause a disease called glaucoma(青光眼).
While you’re probably not going to stop using to your smart phone, there are a few things you can do to protect your eyes. Hold your phone at least 30 centimeters away from your eyes when using it. Take a break every hour and try the following: look at something at least five meters from you and then focus on the tip of your nose. Repeat this several times. It should reduce the discomfort in your eyes.

Imagine you are walking through the woods and you see a small dog. It looks cute and friendly. You move up to pet the dog. Suddenly it barks and tries to bite you. The dog no longer seems cute and you feel afraid and possibly angry. Then, as the wind blows, the leaves on the ground are carried away and you see the dog has one of its legs caught in a trap. Now, you take pity on the dog. You know it becomes unfriendly because it is in pain.
We all judge (评判) others all the time. It might be over small things, like a workmate who takes too long of a lunch break. Or it might be over bigger matters, such as a person who behaves selfishly or hurts our feelings. There are many reasons why we judge others. It is human nature to find a way to survive. When we see a dog(or a person) that might bite us, of course we feel threatened (威胁). We become nervous, want to fight back and are unable to see the possible reasons for another's behavior.
Although judgment is a natural reaction (反应), try to catch yourself before you speak, for you can't get your words back. Make a short stop. Try to change your thought into a positive (正面的) one.
After all, like that dog in the trap, we really don't know the reasons for someone's behavior.
When someone disagrees with us or somehow makes our life difficult, remember that it's usually not about us. It may be about their pain or struggle(挣扎). Why not give others the right to express their doubt? "Never underestimate the pain of a person," Will Smith said, "because in all honesty, everyone is struggling. Some people are better at hiding it than others."

A wise man was visiting a village with his students. He found a group of family members shouting in anger at each other. He turned to his students and asked: “Why do people shout in anger at each other?”
His students thought for a while, and one of them said: “Because when we lose our calm, we shout.”
“But, why should you shout when the other person is just next to you? You can just as well tell him what you have to say in a soft manner,” said the wise man.
Students gave some other answers but none were any good.
“When two people are angry at each other, their hearts become distanced,” the wise man explained. “To cover that distance they must shout to be able to hear each other. The angrier they are, the louder they will have to shout to hear each other and cover that great distance.”
The wise man then gave an example: “What happens when two people fall in love? They don’t shout at each other but talk softly because their hearts are very close. When they love each other even more, what happens? They don’t need to talk. They only look at each other and that’s all. That is how close two people are when they love each other.”

Nothing in Wiley Post's early years showed that he would become a famous pilot one day.
His family were farmers. In 1913, Wiley saw something that forever changed his life---an airplane. Wiley Post began to study everything he could find about flying. Post finally rode in an airplane in 1919. After his first ride, Wiley Post knew that flying was something he could learn to do.
Wiley Post began his career in flying, not as a pilot, but as a performer who jumps from airplanes using a parachute. He did this with a group that performed flying tricks to earn money.
Wiley Post then decided the only way to become a good pilot was to buy an airplane of his own. He needed more money than be earned in the flying show. He went to work in the oil-producing areas of Texas. But he damaged his left eye in an accident. Doctors had to get rid of his eye. Judging distance is difficult without two eyes. Wiley Post began teaching himself to judge distance with only one eye. It took a long time, but he succeeded. Medicine is something people nowadays are very familiar with. There are three branches of medicine. One is named "doctor medicine" or "scientific medicine". Scientific doctors try to observe sicknesses, look for logical patterns, and then find out how the human body works. From that they figure out what treatments may work. This kind of medicine is believed to date from the 4th century BC.Although nowadays it is successful, in the ancient world this approach probably did not cure many patients.
The second kind of medicine is titled "natural cures" or "traditional medicine", in which less educated people try to cure sicknesses with herbs (草药). These folk healers (治疗者) also use observation and logic, but they aren't so aware of it. They try stuffs until they find something seeming to work, and then they keep doing that. Folk medicine thrived long before the development of scientific drug and was more successful in ancient times than doctor drug.
The third kind is known as "health spas" or "faith healing". Sometimes this may be as simple as touching the holy (圣洁的) man and being immediately healed. Other times, a magician may make you a magic charm, or say a spell (咒语) to heal you. Some religious groups organize special curing shrines for the sick. In these places people take a rest, get plenty of sleep, eat healthy food, drink water instead of alcohol, and exercise in various ways. They also talk to the priests and pray to the gods. Provided that you are feeling depressed or you have been working too hard, going to these places may be just the right stuff to make you feel better.

It is not easy to set and reach goals. The following practical tips on goal setting can help you.
76."I'm going to recycle all my plastic bottles, soda cans, and magazines" is a much more doable goal than "I'm going to do more for the environment". And that makes it easier to stick with.
77. It will probably take a couple of months before any changes—like getting up half an hour early to exercise—become a routine part of your life. That's because your brain needs time to get used to the idea that this new thing you're doing is part of your regular routine.
Repeating a goal makes it stick.78.(Writing it down works too.) Every time you remind yourself of your goal, you're training your brain to make it happen.
Pleasing other people doesn't work.79. Make sure you have to do it because you want it, not because a girlfriend, boyfriend, coach, parent, or someone else wants you to. It will be harder to stay on track and motivated if you're doing something out of obligation to another person.
Roadblocks don't mean failure. Slip-ups are actually part of the learning process as you retrain your brain into a new way of thinking. It may take a few tries to reach a goal. But that's ok — it's normal to mess up or give up a few times when trying to make a change.80.
A.Specific, realistic goals work best.
B.It takes time for a change to become an established habit.
C.The key to making any change is to find the desire within you.
D.So remember that everyone slips up and don't beat yourself up about it and remind yourself to get back on track.
E.Say your goal out loud each morning to remind yourself of what you want and what you're working for.

When I was in the seventh grade, I volunteered at a hospital during the summer vacation. Most of the time I was with Mr. Gillespie. He never had any visitors, and nobody seemed to care about him. I spent many days there holding his hand and talking to him. He became a close friend of mine, although he never replied to me. Mr. Gillespie was still in a coma (昏迷).
I was away for a week to go on vacation with my parents, and when I came back, Mr. Gillespie wasn't in the hospital. I didn't want to ask the nurses where he was. I was afraid they might tell me he was dead. However, I kept volunteering there for a long time.
Several years passed. One day, when I was at the gas station, I noticed a familiar face. I asked him if his name was Mr. Gillespie, and if he was in a coma about five years ago. With an uncertain look on his face, he replied, "Yes." I explained how I knew him and what I did in the hospital. With tears in his eyes, he gave me a warm hug (拥抱).
He told me that when he was in a coma, he could hear me talking and feel me holding his hand. He thought it was an angel (天使), not a person, who was there with him. Mr. Gillespie believed that my voice and touch kept him alive.
Although I haven't seen him since then, he fills my heart with joy every day. I know that I made a difference between his life and death. More importantly, he has made a very big difference to my life, too. I'll never forget him and what he did for me—he made me an angel.

Many years ago, people relied on the sun, the moon and stars to find their way around. Later, the compass (指南针) was introduced. And now, we have satnav (卫星导航) systems to guide us. A satnav system uses groups of satellites to show the user’s location. They send information to a receiver, such as a smart phone, to show us where we are.
The earliest built satnav system is the Global Positioning System, which belongs to the US. Then there is Russia’s Global Navigation (导航) Satellite System, the European Union’s Galileo and China’s own satellite navigation system, BeiDou.
On October 14, 2017, an ARJ21-700 plane, which was the first domestically-produced jet (国产喷气式飞机) equipped with the BeiDou navigation system, successfully completed a test flight. The results showed the performance of the system developed by China matches that of similar systems produced aboard, according to the Commercial Aircraft Corporation of China.
Since its introduction in 2000, the Beidou navigation system has seen increasing numbers of applications linked to everyday life, from shared bikes to farming.
When it comes to shared bikes, smart locks that support BeiDou chips offer more accurate positioning than others, making it easier to find a bike.
Farmers can use BeiDou-enabled tractors to plow (犁) the soil and use unmanned aircraft with BeiDou to sow seeds, which can improve efficiency and make better use of resources. BeiDou’s farming applications have spread from Heilongjiang province to Beijing, Liaoning, Shanxi, Hubei and other regions across China.
With its many uses, the Beidou navigation system is even playing a big role in the Belt and Road Initiative (一带一路). “To date, the BeiDou system has covered most parts of the Asia-Pacific region (地区), as well as countries along the Silk Road Economic Belt and the 21stCentury Maritime Silk Road” said Yang Changfeng, Chief designer of the BeiDou system.
Today, there are more than 20 BeiDou satellites above our heads, and China plans to launch even more this year to expand the BeiDou network to better serve the Belt and Road Initiative.
“As BeiDou expands its overseas reach, it will be increasingly popular in the logistics (物流) industry,” said Miao Qianjun, secretary-general of the navigation services association. “Ships, for example, can use it to position themselves while sailing across oceans to European countries, no longer limited to Southeast Asian regions in the near future.”

Next time you hold a book in your hands, stop and think. Like most other things in the modern world, it is the result of thousands of years of human invention.
First, came the invention of writing, 126.(probable) about 5500 years ago. With writing, people did not have to remember everything in their heads. They could communicate with people that they never 127.(see) and share their knowledge with future generations.

But the biggest change for books in Europe came in 1439, when Johannes Gutenberg invented the printing press. Before that, books in Europe were copied by 132./h?nd/, so they were very expensive. But many more people could afford the books that were produced on a printing press.
These days it is difficult to 133. /?'m?d??n/ a world without books. But human invention does not stop. Every year, more 134.(story) are bought as e-books and read on a screen.
