There were many plants in a forest. When spring came, a tree saw a red rose nearby and said, “What a beautiful flower! I wish I were that lovely.”

As the days passed, the red rose often looked at the cactus and said bad words about it, like “This plant is useless. How sorry I am to be his neighbor!”
The cactus never got angry and even tried to advise the rose, saying, “God did not create any form of life without a purpose.” Spring passed, and the weather became very hot. As there was no rain, the red rose began to wilt(枯萎).
One day the rose saw birds put their beaks (喙) into the cactus and then fly away. The red rose asked the tree what the birds were doing. The tree explained that the birds were getting water from the cactus.

The novel coronavirus pneumonias (COVID-1) outbreak in China was caused by a new coronavinus that we have never seen before. Some doctors found that several patients infected COVID-19 had been to the Huanan Seafood Market in Wuhan. All kinds of wild animals were on sale in the market. Some scientists found that the virus might come from bats and was then spread to humans from pangolins(穿山甲). According to Live Science, bats can carry and spread more than 60 viruses that can infect humans, such as Ebola and SARS. Other wild animals like snakes are also hosts of many viruses.
Why are bats probably the source of so many viruses? Here are several reasons as follows.
1. Bats tend to live in dark and wet places where there are many kinds of viruses.
2. Bats always live in groups. Therefore, the viruses can have larger "playgrounds" to evolve and become more powerful.
3. Bats are mammals(哺乳动物), just like humans. Our similar genes make it easier for us to become infected with the same viruses.
4. When bats fly, their body temperature can reach as high as 40℃. This high temperature can kill weak viruses, but stronger ones will survive and continue to evolve.
5. Bats have special immune(免疫的) systems that allow them to live with viruses without getting sick.
6. Since they can fly, bats can spread viruses farther and more easily than other animals. Although wild animals carry many diseases, it doesn’t mean that we should regard them as evil. Each has a role in the ecosystem(生态系统) and all of them are important for keeping a good ecological balance. The lesson we should learn from virus outbreaks is to respect and protect animals and to live in harmony with them, instead of hunting, killing, or eating them.

4476115123190People are playing video games everywhere these days, whether they’re riding a bus or sitting in a restaurant. Some of them enjoy these games so much that they can’t put them down.
But is this a healthy habit? The World Health Organization (WHO) doesn’t think so. In June, it recognized “gaming disorder (障碍)” as a disorder in mind in its International Classification of Diseases, CNN reported.
“Gaming disorder” refers to playing video games persistently(持续地) or recurrently(经常重复地) , whether online or offline. Of course, not everyone who plays video games has this disorder. It has three main characteristics.
The first sign is when the player loses control over his or her gaming habits. The second is when playing games becomes more important than other activities for the player. The third is when the condition leads to serious problems in the player’s personal and family life. Many experts said that people all over the world should consider the condition as something to take seriously. It is believed that new services to treat this disorder will appear following the WHO classification.
In fact, some countries are already working to solve this problem. South Korea has introduced a law not allowing children under 16 to play online games between midnight and 6 a.m., USA Today reported. Chinese tech company Tencent is also setting limits on the amount of time that teenagers can play its games. Children between 12 and 18 years old can only play two hours per day.
If you have “gaming disorder”, you should ask for professional medical help. But if your condition is not that serious, you can use delayed gratification(延迟满足) to deal with it, according to the National Institute Of Education Sciences. For example, if you tell yourself not to play any video games on weekdays, you can allow yourself to play for three hours during the weekend. Or if you really want to play them after school, you can tell yourself that you cannot do so until you have finished your homework.
26.A player may have “gaming disorder” if he or she ________.
A.prefers offline games to online ones B.can’t stop playing video games
C.takes part in lots of social activities D.is good at dealing with problems
27.Which of the following is NOT a sign of “gaming disorder”?
A.Games are the most important thing in one’s life.
B.The player continues playing games day and night.
C.The player can control himself about playing games.
D.The player always argues with his parents about games.
28.In South Korea, people have to be ________ to play online games after midnight.
A.under 12 years old B.between 12 and 18 years old
C.over 16 years old D.over 18 years old
29.Gina, a 16-year-old girl, is always absent from classes because she loses herself in video games every day. According to the passage, she should ________.

I know a Catherine who is smart, educated and interesting. But I avoid her because she never 46 complaining (抱怨) ! For years, I fought against my feelings, because I really like and admire her, but I’ve found I just can’t be her friend. Her world is 47 “buts…”. The hotel was too hot, the bed hurt her back and the room service was too slow. Her complaints were 49 changing me. Months ago, my best friend Daisy was listening to me complaining about Catherine 50 she just became really angry. “Either break up with her, or leave me alone.” She shouted at me, “I’m tired of listening to your complaining.” Her honesty surprised me, and I began to keep myself away from Catherine. You must have remembered the story from your childhood: an old man was worried about his sons who were always quarreling(吵架) among themselves. In order to teach them a lesson, he asked them to break a bundle(捆) of sticks tied together. Clearly, none of them could. And when the bundle was untied, they were able to break each stick easily enough. Why? This is because of the power of unity(团结).
The power of unity is known to all of us. But we often seem to forget it when it comes to individual(个体的) success. Most of us consider our success as a personal thing, and it has nothing to do with others.
Dr. John Maxwell, in his book Success Journey says that success is not a trip that you take alone. But it is something that you take with your family and your friends. Think about it—if at the end of all the achievements, you find yourself alone, will you call it success in a real sense?
Your dream and your success do not belong to you alone. Even though you work hard towards your dream, there are people who are working behind to make sure that you are able to give you a hundred percent. For example, you are studying in school so that you can have good education; your parents are working hard to pay for the cost and provide something you need for you.
Do you think that it is possible without unity? Don’t you feel that these people are doing their best so that you can be successful? And so, unity plays an important role, even if you are talking about your personal success. So, it is your responsibility(责任) to maintain unity if you really want to be successful in life. Only if you always treat things and people in your life seriously, will you succeed because all the things and people around you have connections in some way.

Not long ago, few little girls imagined they could grow up to become astronauts. For years in the United States, only men had that opportunity. In 1983, that changed. Sally Ride made history by becoming the first American woman to travel into space.
On Monday, Ride died at the age of 61. "Sally was a national hero and a powerful role model," President Barack Obama said in a statement. "She inspired generations of young girls to reach for the stars."
Ride became interested in Space when she was a kid. "If you asked me when I was 12 whether I wanted to be an astronaut, I'm sure I would have said yes," she said in a 2013 interview. "But I didn't even think about that as a possible career."
After studying physics in college and graduate school, Ride got her chance. She was accepted into NASA's astronaut training program in 1978, and then chosen to be the first American female in space. In 1983, she blasted into space aboard the Challenger shuttle. "There is no amusement park ride on Earth that even comes close," she said.
Ride returned to space on the Challenger a second time in 1984. Between the two missions, she spent a total of 343 hours in orbit. After that, she remained involved with the space program and also worked to share her passion for science with kids. She wrote five science books for children, and started her own science education company.
Ride knew that she held a unique place in history. "I realized how important it was for a woman to break that barrier and open the door for other women to be able to do the same exciting things that the men had been doing," she said.
Since Ride's historic trip, more than 40 other American women have traveled to space. They all had Ride to thank for opening the door to the final frontier.

In difficult times, there are always people who step up and bring people hope and confidence. One of them is Zhong Nanshan.
"Please don't travel to Wuhan unless it's absolutely necessary," Zhong Nanshan, a famous respiratory (呼吸科的) expert, reminded the public when the novel coronavirus first hit Wuhan. But despite the danger, he, an 84-year-old man, took the train to Wuhan to fight the disease.
Known as the hero who defeated SARS in 2003, Zhong's image and messages are flooding (遍布) social media. Many people say they "trust every word of Zhong". He has given Chinese people confidence in winning the battle.
A great doctor and honest scholar (学者)
Growing up in a family of doctors, Zhong lives by a simple motto (信条): save lives and always be honest. In 2003, when SARS hit China, he volunteered to treat patients and asked his colleagues (同事) to send their most serious patients to him. After months of work, his treatment plan for SARS was adopted (采纳) by China and then the whole world, saving thousands of lives, People's Daily reported.
Zhong is also known for being an honest scholar. In 2003, when authorities (官方) said that the SARS virus was under control, he publicly refuted their statement. "It's not all under control," Zhong said in a later interview. His honesty won widespread praise from the Chinese public.
Back to the frontlines
Seventeen years later, Zhong is once again leading an expert team to study the novel coronavirus (新型冠状病毒). Although this new virus is known to be more dangerous to the elderly, Zhong doesn't seem worried about his own safety.
On Jan 18, he took a high-speed train from Guangzhou to Wuhan. Two days later, he became the first expert to make certain that the new virus can be spread between humans. On January 29, he and his colleagues spent over four hours online checking five patients who were in serious condition. The next day, he chose the treatment for those patients. Under his guidance, his team developed a rapid test kit (快速检测试剂盒) for the disease that can show results within 15 minutes.

Smoke alarms(报警器)
(F)
House fires cause many deaths each year and a large number of these fires are unfortunately set by children.76.Kids must understand that they’d better not play with fire. You should keep matches and lighters out of their reach.
77. The main job of such an alarm is to protect you while you're asleep. You should have a smoke alarm outside each bedroom and on each floor of your home. You ought to have two plans for getting out of your house if there is a fire and practise these plans in the dark with your family.
A smoke alarm warns you of the danger. 78.Take action immediately. When you come to a closed door, check it with the back of your hand. If it feels hot, there may be smoke or fire behind the door, so take care. Once you are out of your house, call the fire department from a neighbor's house. If a family member or a pet is caught inside, you shouldn’t go back in. Firemen know how to perform rescues safely.
79. Change the batteries at least once a year. You should use the test button each month to see if the alarm and batteries are still working. A smoke alarm lasts about ten years. You ought to change it even if it seems to be working.
About two out of three fire deaths happen in homes with no working smoke alarms.80.

“It’s good to talk,” some people say. I take a bus in London, there are certainly plenty of people talking on their mobile phones, sometimes too loudly, discussing and sharing personal information with a friend.
Many of us meet strangers every day no matter where we are. Some scientists studied this silent relationship and wondered if staying alone is a more positive(积极的)experience than communicating with strangers. They found that many people felt uncomfortable and ashamed talking to others and they said that many people just couldn’t understand how much a new person liked them when they started a conversation.
Their research showed that people who actually tried to talk to a stranger found the people sitting next to them was happy to chat with them. From this, this conclusion(结论)is that connecting with strangers is surprisingly pleasant and it has a good influence on our health. People are in a better mood after they have a conversation. It’s true that talking can make us feel happier and happiness can lead to better mental health.
However, if we’re shy, the thought of speaking to strangers might make us anxious. But an American research found that all people were happier when they were asked to behave in a brave manner. So maybe, if we’re alone, it’s time to go out of our house and make some small talks with a stranger — it could be the beginning of a new friendship.

472376590805Deep Green Bush School is New Zealand’s newest and most unusual school with just eight students. The weather is so beautiful that the school day will start with fishing. After, the kids will eat lunch cooked on an open fire. Homework and classes? Canceled. Students spend most of the day outdoors exploring nature. They also learn about the plants and animals of their home. Students learn to read and write, but they do so at their own pace, when they begin getting interested, not when the teacher decides it is time to learn.
“We are called a school but we look nothing like any school out there,” says Joey Moncarz, who had been a teacher in more common schools for five years before he helped start the school more than a year ago. Being worried that common schools were not preparing children for the problems of the future, he began thinking about a very different kind of education, teaching kids the skills of survival.
Some parents saw their kids were unhappy and stressed in mainstream education and began to question whether it is normal or right for kids to come home stressed and unhappy. People have asked Moncarz to open similar “bush schools” around New Zealand, and as far away as Europe and China.
David Berg is a learning expert. He said schools like Moncarz’s are becoming more popular. However, he says, these schools need to be careful. Children need to learn traditional subjects so they can find jobs in the modern world. Berg said many people still feel it is important to spend more time in nature. People in the modern world need to have many skills and some of those can be developed outside.
Moncarz insists that the school isn’t an experiment( 试 验 ). For two million years, parents have brought up their kids with nature, he said. “We don’t want to be one of a kind, we want to take the place of mainstream schools,” he said. “We are using the same method parents have used to teach their kids for millions of years. Locking kids in a classroom and driving them to learn just causes a lot of problems.”
116.Paragraph 1 is mostly about ________.

Do you know where J.K. Rowling wrote the Harry Potter books? She wrote the first books in a coffee shop. Was it because she felt more creative when working there? The answer might be yes!
Scientists from the University of Illinois found that moderate (适度的) noise can make people more creative, the New York Times reported.
Scientists did tests on students. They divided them into four groups. They then asked the students to do certain tasks involving creative thinking. But each group did the task with different volumes (音量) of background noise.
They found that students did best when working under moderate noise —70 decibels (分贝). This is about the same volume of background noise in a cafe. Students did worse in low noise (50 db). This is the volume of a quiet room. They did the poorest when in a high-noise (85 db) environment. This is the noise level in a factory.
Moderate noise can distract (分心) people just enough so that they think more creatively. “It helps you think outside the box,” Raci Mehta, a lead researcher in the study, said to the Business Standard.
On the one hand, working in a very quiet place can strengthen our focus. But it also stops us from thinking abstractly (抽象地).
“This is why if you are too focused on a problem and you can’t solve it,” said Mehta, “You leave it for some time and then come back to it and you get the solution.”
However, the scientists said that when you need to do detailed things, like proofreading (校对) a paper, a quiet place is better than a noisy one.

A.It can help people think outside the box. B.It can make people think abstractly.
C.It can help people find the solution easily. D.It can help people focus on their work.
155.What is the main idea of the story?
A.How to work under a moderate noise level. B.Why J. K. Rowling likes to write stories in a coffee shop.

Do you want to eat every delicious food in the world? Then do you watch the popular program? "A Bite of China(舌尖上的中国)" is a documentary on Chinese delicious food which has been broadcasted by Chinese central television. Is there any holiday that isn't celebrated with a special festival food? Here are several traditional Chinese foods.
Eggs hold a special meaning in many cultures. The Chinese believe eggs mean producing something new. After a baby is born, parents may hold a "red egg and ginger party," where they pass out eggs to announce the birth. In some areas of China the number of eggs represents(代表)the sex of the child, for example, an odd number(1,3,5,..) for a girl, and an even number(2,4,6…) for a boy .
Noodles are a symbol of long life in Chinese culture. They are a part of a Chinese birthday celebration as a birthday cake in many countries. Since noodles represent long life, it is considered very unlucky to cut it off.
In China a whole fish is a symbol of richness. In fact, at a party it is traditional to serve the whole fish last. Fish also has a special meaning because the Chinese word for fish sounds like the word for richness or plenty, and it is believed that eating fish will help your wishes come true in the year to come.
A very popular dish during the Dragon Boat Festival is Zongzi. This tasty dish is made of rice dumplings with meat, peanuts or other delicious food in bamboo leaves. Zongzi will remind us of the great man Qu Yuan.
The 50-minute program tries to bring something new by presenting more cultural elements(元素),such as eating habits and the quality of eating.

What are you holding in your hand while you are taking the examination? Right. A pen.
Though it is small, the pen has changed the history, improved the trade of countries, recorded events, carried news, and done far more work for human beings than all other tools.
Progress without it would have been almost impossible. The invention of the wheels, the introduction of steam engine(蒸汽机), the use of electricity, all these have changed the lives of millions of people, but the pen has done more. It has taken away mountains, and it has prepared the way for all progress and development of the society.
In the past the pen did all the work if you wanted to keep any writing for some time. The lawyers took up their pens and wrote the law of the country from the days when papyrus(纸莎草纸) was first used. The most famous letters in the world were written with a pen. It was with a pen that the greatest thinkers of all time wrote down their thoughts.
The pen is very utilitarian. We cannot sign a bill or write a letter or buy a house without our pen. An agreement is worthless till our name is written with a pen. The writers encourage the world with it. The students take their examinations with it as well.
Our coming into the world is recorded with a pen. Before we have been at school, our name is written on the name list with a pen. We cannot be married till we have signed. A pen records the important events in our life.
Let us remember that we hold in our hand the most powerful instrument which man owns. The pen is a magic tool. Whenever you use it, enjoy it.
