Where do you find beauty? Fashion Magazines? Music Videos? One American photographer is finding beauty in unexpected places. And a new documentary about his work might help change the traditional standards of “who” is beautiful.
Rick Guidotti put aside his career as a fashion Photographer to turn his lens to people living with genetic, physical and behavioral differences. He says what changed his perception of beauty was a chance encounter with an albino (白化病) girl.
“I was just tired of people telling me who was beautiful. Every season that face would change but I was always told who was beautiful. As an artist, I don’t see beauty just on covers of magazines. I see it everywhere. So it was my initial intention that opened my eyes a little wider and wider.” Said Guidotti.
Guidotti has created Positive Exposure, a not-for-profit organization that uses photography and video to transform public perceptions and promote a world where differences are celebrated. Guidotti and Positive Exposure are featured in a new documentary called On Beauty.
The cast and crew recently hosted a screening at Georgetown University in Washington. One of the women featured in the film is Jayne Waithera. “I never thought I was beautiful because nobody said that to me, but meeting him was my profound moment. I remember that particular day he took my picture and I felt so good like I felt there’s somebody who, really loves me and sees me for who I am and who sees me more than my condition.” said Waithera.
The documentary is the brainchild of producer Joanna Rudnick. After seeing Rick’s photos, she decided to tell his story. Joanna and Rick are traveling from city to city to promote On Beauty. “As I travel from community to community, I’m taking photographs and I’m empowering individuals with a positive sense of who they are. They’re seeing beauty in their reflection but I’m also empowering their families and they in turn are empowering their communities as well. All is based on the philosophy of change how you see, see how you change.”
24. Why did Rick change his career?
A. Because he couldn’t earn enough money from his former career.
B. Because the beauty on covers of magazines are not beautiful.
C. Because he wanted to create his own company.
D. Because his comprehension of beauty changed owing to an albino girl.
25. What can we know about Positive Exposure?
A. It brings a lot of money for Rick. B. It makes the public more beautiful.
C. It welcomes differences in the world. D. It makes photography more popular.
26. What does the author want to tell us by mentioning Jayne in Paragraph 5?
A. Jayne was beautiful indeed.
B. Photographs gave Jayne a positive sense of who she was.
C. It was unfair that nobody discovered Jayne’s beauty.
D. Jayne’s picture was more beautiful than herself.
27. What do you know about Rick Guidotti based on the passage?
A. He’s a talented photographer with a firmly established reputation.
B. He’s a social worker devoting himself to helping the disadvantaged.
C. He conveys a new concept of beauty by means of a documentary.
D. He promotes people’s taste of beauty through his fashion photographs.
C
Looking at a pile of old photos, I couldn’t help feeling rather regretful.
I’ve never got into the habit of sorting out photos. However, it’s almost a habit of mine to have photos taken thoughtlessly. Thus, photos have been piling up in my childhood to womanhood. In spite of that, those black-and-white pictures taken in my early years are rarely kept, except a few survivals regarded as antiques. The bald baby picture of me that I treasured, the only one left, it’s now missing.
Familiar faces flash one by one before my eyes. Though the world is so small and we all live in it, yet we are separated by physical and psychological distances, some smaller, some larger. With the passage of time, one cannot, regretfully relive (重温) it with the same feeling as one had in the picture. What one can get from the old photos is but a bit of the past joy.
One takes pictures with different persons in different time and places. They fill one with nostalgia (怀旧) in various degrees — some more, some less, and others none. That’s why one has conflicting feelings towards the old photos. Still kept with the current ones, they’re even less favored than a daily-used cup, which is always close to the owner.
How these pieces of thought influence me! Photos keep our images rather than our sentiment, which may not remain. The image is always there but not its owner, whom the photo can’t keep, neither can it keep the event.
Of course, there are some of the photos still holding my affection, such as those taken with my family members, with favorite playmates, fellow girl-students and best friends, not only in pictures but also in my life and heart.
Now, since I have learned all this, I will not allow myself to be included casually in a photo taken with others. I’ll make sure that the friendship can last before I take a photo with somebody.
28. Why did the writer have only a few black-and-white pictures?
A. She took fewer of them. B. She took photos thoughtlessly.
C. She didn’t take good care of them. D. She only liked the bald baby picture.
29. What can we get from the old photos according to the writer?
A. All the past events. B. All the past excitement.
C. Some past happiness. D. The everlasting memory.
30. What does the underlined word “sentiment” in paragraph 5 probably mean?
A. Feeling. B. Thought. C. Look. D. Influence.
31. What is the writer likely to do when asked to take photos with others?
A. To take the photo happily. B. To refuse the request politely.
C. To ignore the request casually. D. To think carefully before action.
D
Smile! It makes everyone in the room feel better because they, consciously or unconsciously, are smiling with you. Growing evidence shows that an instinct for facial mimicry (模仿) allows us to empathize with and even experience other people’s feelings. If we can’t mirror another person’s face, it limits our ability to read and properly react to their expressions. A review of this emotional mirroring appears on February 11 in Trends in Cognitive Sciences.
In their paper, Paula Niedenthal and Adrienne Wood, social psychologists at the University of Wisconsin, describe how people in social situations copy others’ facial expressions to create emotional responses in themselves. For example, if you’re with a friend who looks sad, you might “try on” that sad face yourself without realizing you’re doing so. In “trying on” your friend’s expression, it helps you to recognize what they’re feeling by associating it with times in the past when you made that expression. Humans get this emotional meaning from facial expressions in a matter of only a few hundred milliseconds.
“You reflect on your emotional feelings and then you generate some sort of recognition judgment, and the most important thing that results in is that you take the appropriate action—you approach the person or you avoid the person,” Niedenthal says. “Your own emotional reaction to the face changes your perception of how you see the face in such a way that provides you with more information about what it means.”
A person’s ability to recognize and “share” others’ emotions can be prevented when they can’t mimic faces. This is a common complaint for people with motor diseases, like facial paralysis (瘫痪) from a stroke, or even due to nerve damage from plastic surgery. Niedenthal notes that the same would not be true for people who suffer from paralysis from birth, because if you’ve never had the ability to mimic facial expressions, you will have developed compensatory ways of interpreting emotions.
People with social disorders associated with mimicry or emotion-recognition damage, like autism (自闭症), can experience similar challenges. “There are some symptoms in autism where lack of facial mimicry may in part be due to limitation of eye contact,” Niedenthal says. Niedenthal next wants to explore what part in the brain is functioning to help with facial expression recognition. A better understanding of that part, she says, will give us a better idea of how to treat related disorders.
32. According to the passage, facial mimicry helps ________.
A. experience one’s own feelings clearly B. change others’ emotions quickly
C. respond to others’ expressions properly D. develop friendship with others easily
33. We can know from Paragraph 4 and 5 that ________.
A. people with motor diseases may also suffer from autism
B. people born with facial paralysis may still recognize emotions
C. people with social disorders can’t have eye contact with others
D. people receiving plastic surgery have difficulty in mimicking faces
34. According to Niedenthal, the next step of the study will focus on ________.
A. what part of our brain helps recognize facial expression
B. what can be done to regain facial mimicry
C. how our brain helps us with emotional mirroring
D. how we can treat brain disorders
35. The passage is written to ________.
A.discuss how people react positively to others’ smiles
B. draw people’s attention to those with social disorders
C. introduce a new trend in facial expression recognition
D. explain how emotional mirroring affects people’s empathy

How to Make a Good Impression on Your Teacher
Making a good first impression on your teacher is an important part of having a good school year. You don’t have to be smart to get a teacher to appreciate you.
Introduce yourself at the first opportunity. Talk to them for a minute or so if you want to. This shows that you aren’t afraid to socialize and that you have confidence. Most teachers like students who have confidence and share the same hobbies with them. 36
Be obedient, especially for the first few weeks of school. Always raise your hand before speaking. Don’t hesitate to ask questions if you don’t understand anything. 37 This implies that you want to learn and that you strive to do well in school. Just make sure you don’t ask questions too often.
38 Teachers love cheerful students. So keep a positive attitude. Besides, participating shows that you understand what your teacher is talking about. It will seem like that you are prepared and listening in class.
Listen carefully and study hard. Know when to pay attention. Having to ask the teacher to repeat themselves can be embarrassing. 39 If you do, you’ll score highly in your first test. Maintaining your grades throughout the whole year (or semester) is a must.
Turn in assignments on time. As children grow older, homework as well as the amount of time engaged in homework increases in importance. 40 Late home work can result in punishments and your teacher won’t be happy either.
A. Work hard in preparation for tests.
B. Remember to keep a positive attitude
C. Smile and participate in some activities.
D. Try to find something you both have in common
E. Your teacher will be more than happy to help you.
F. That means no complaining, being angry or frowning
G. Homework is an effective way to provide additional instruction.

When I spent the last summer with my Grandmother in Warwick, N.Y., she sent me down to the grocery store with a long shopping list. Staring at all the items on the list, I wondered how I could find anything on the packed shelves around me. But she insisted.
I walked up to the counter. Behind it was a lady like no one I’d ever seen. Thick glasses rested on the tip of her nose, gray hair was piled on her head.
“Excuse me,” I said. She looked up.
“You’re that Clements kid,” she said. “I’m Miss Bee. Come closer and let me get a look at you.” She pushed her glasses up her nose. “I want to be able to describe you to the policeman if something goes missing from the store.”
“I’m not a thief!” I was shocked. I was too young to be a thief!
“Maybe not, but I can tell you’ve got potential.” She went back to reading her newspaper.
“I need to get these.” I said, holding up my list.
“So? Go get them.” She ignored my need of a favor, “There’s no one here except you and me and I’m not your servant, so I suggest you start looking for the things on that list.”
The store was a puzzle to a seven-year-old, and it seemed to hold all the goods in the world. I complained about this task Grandma had set me to do while trying to find all the items on my list. It took me one and half an hour to do it, and the mean lady behind the counter didn’t even bother to look at me once.
I visited Miss Bee a couple of times a week that summer. Sometimes she sold me an old newspaper instead of one that was the latest. Sometimes she overcharged me and didn’t seem embarrassed when I pointed it out. Going to the store was more like going into battle, but I survived. By summer’s end the shopping trip that had once taken me an hour was done in 15 minutes. The morning I was to return to Brooklyn, I stopped in to get a soda.

Dear Jim,
How is it going? I’m so glad to hear you will come to Beijing and participate in the Chinese Singing Competition for Foreigners this summer vacation. For the song to choose, I highly recommend Moli Hua, Jasmine Flower, which is representative of Chinese folk music.
My recommendation is based on the following reasons. First of all, it enjoys wide popularity, so there’s no doubt it will attract the audience’s attention once you start to sing. Moreover, this song has beautiful melody and simple lyrics, which are relatively easy for you to learn in a short time. At the same time, the soothing tunes will make your learning process pleasant and comfortable. I bet you are bound to stand out among all the competitors.
I sincerely hope my recommendation can be helpful and wish you a wonderful performance. When you come to Beijing, remember to let me know, since I’d like to be there to cheer for you.
Yours,
Li Hua
(二)
Paragraph 1:
“All right, Miss Potential,” she said. “What did you learn this summer?” “That you’re mean!” Finally I said it, thinking that I didn’t have to deal with her again. To my amazement, Miss Bee laughed. “I know what you think of me,” she continued “Well, I don’t care! Each of us is put on this earth for a reason. I believe my job is to teach every child I meet some life lessons to help them.” Embarrassed as I felt, I wasn’t capable of appreciating the lessons she claimed she had given me at such a young age, and I only wished that I had never met her. After checking out, I left.
Paragraph 2:
One day after all those years my seven-year-old daughter came to me with homework troubles. “It’s too hard,” she complained. “Could you finish my math problems for me?” “If I do it for you how will you ever learn to do it yourself?” I responded. Suddenly, I was back at the grocery store where I had learned the hard way to deal with my own business. Had I ever been overcharged since? As my daughter went back to her homework, I wondered: Had Miss Bee really taught me something all those years ago? Sure enough, she didn’t act as a servant but she inspired potential in a seven-year-old.

(Text 10)
W: Listen, everybody. I’m going to give you some important information about our trip to the capital on Friday. Firstly, the bus is coming to pick us up from school and we leave at 9:15. But don’t wait outside the main gate, even if you see the bus waiting there. Come to the classroom first because I need to take the register before we leave, to make sure everyone is here. OK? Lunch is provided, so don’t bring your own food. You’ll get a sandwich, an egg and a piece of fruit. But you need to bring a drink. When we get to the capital, the bus drops us at the sports stadium. From there we’ll walk to the Transport Museum, which is our first visit. After that, it’s on to the Natural History Museum. In the afternoon, we’re going to the National Concert Hall, but not to see a concert or dancing because the event that’s on is actually not a musical show at all; it’s an exhibition of modern art. At the concert hall, there’s a large souvenir shop where you can buy presents for your families. Now remember the bus will go at 5:30. So we have to leave the shop at 5:00 at the latest, to walk back to the parking lot together. Tell your parents we’ll be back at school here by 7:15. OK? So I think that’s all.
