You may know the English letters A,B and C,but do you know there are people called ABCs?You may like eating bananas, but do you know there is such a thing as “a banana person”?How strange! Are these people from another earth? No.They are just Chinese people like you and me.
ABC means America born Chinese. An ABC is a Chinese, but was born in the US.Sometimes, people call an ABC “a banana person”.A banana is yellow outside and white inside. So,when a person is a banana,he or she is white inside—thinking like a westerner and yellow outside—looking like a Chinese.
Do you know why?Usually,ABCs know little about China or the Chinese language. Some of them can not speak Chinese. Also, they are not interested in Chinese politics.
But if ABCs can’t speak Chinese, can we still call them Chinese people?Yes,of course. They are Chinese. They are overseas Chinese. These people may be citizens of another country like the US,Canada or Singapore, but they have Chinese blood.Their parents, grandparents or even great grandparents were from China. They all have black eyes and black hair.
But they are not Chinese citizens. They are not people of the People’s Republic of China. For example,we all know the famous scientist C.N.Yang (杨振宁).He got the Nobel Prize for physics in 1957.Chinese people love him.But he is an American citizen.

Getting a good education is more important today than ever before. It is the best thing you can do to build a better future for your children and yourself.
Most children in Canada attend public schools.Public schools are completely founded by governments through tax (税收) income.Boys and girls attend the same school and share the same courses and classes.Schooling in Canada is provided in English and in French.
The rest of Canadian children attend private schools, which are supported mainly by fees (费) paid directly by parents. Some private schools enroll (招收) only boys or girls.
By law, children must attend school from age 5 to 16.Children are usually in school between 8∶30 or 9∶00 a.m.,and 3∶30 or 4∶00 p.m.,Monday through Friday, from September to the middle of June. There are several different levels in the Canadian education system. The first is called Elementary Schools. In most provinces Elementary Schools include Kindergarten through Grade 7 or 8.
From Grade 8 or 9 through 12 or 13,children go to Secondary School or High School.High School students must take certain courses for several years, such as English or French and Mathematics. Some courses help students get a job after they graduate from school.Other courses prepare students for college or university. In Canada, teenagers usually make these choices for themselves, with the advice of their teachers, guidance counselor (指导教师) and parents.
Schools usually offer extra activities at the end of the normal school day. These include sports ,games, music and clubs.
Most elementary and high schools encourage parents to take part in school activities.Parents’ nights are organized from time to time. These are chances for parents to discuss their children’s progress with teachers. You may wish to bring a friend with you. After graduating from high school, many young adults continue their studies through post secondary education.

Surprisingly,no one knows how many children receive education in English hospitals, still less the content or quality of that education.Proper records are just not kept.We know that more than 850,000 children go through hospital each year, and that every child of school age has a legal right to continue to receive education while in hospital. We also know there is only one hospital teacher to every 1,000 children in hospital.
Little wonder the latest survey concludes that the extent and type of hospital teaching available differ a great deal across the country. It is found that half the hospitals in England which admit children have no teacher.A further quarter have only a part time teacher. The special children’s hospitals in major cities do best;general hospitals in the country and holiday areas are worst off. From this survey, one can estimate that fewer than one in five children have some contact with a hospital teacher—and that contact may be as little as two hours a day. Most children interviewed were surprised to find a teacher in hospital at all. They had not been prepared for it by parents or their own school. If there was a teacher they were much more likely to read books and do math or number work;without a teacher they would only play games.
Reasons for hospital teaching range from preventing a child falling behind and maintaining the habit of school to keeping a child occupied, and the latter is of ten all the teacher can do.The position and influence of many teachers was summed up when parents referred to them as “the library lady” or just “the helper”.Children tend to rely on concerned school friends to keep in touch with school work.Several parents spoke of requests for work being ignored or refused by the school.Once back at school children rarely get extra teaching, and are told to catch up as best as they can.
Many short stay child patients catch up quickly. But schools do very little to ease the anxiety about falling behind expressed by many of the children interviewed.

Beijing (Xinhua)—Blind Chinese pianist Sun Yan,23,will give a concert at the People’s Liberation Army Theatre in downtown Beijing.

If you took the strengths of others and compared them to your weaknesses, would this make you feel good? The funny thing is that this is what most of us do at one time or another—and some of us do it pretty often. It’s a sure-fire recipe for a drop in self confidence and for unhappiness. So how can we stop comparing ourselves with others? Here are some tips I’ve found useful.
Awareness. Most often we do these social comparisons without realizing we’re doing it.It’s a natural act,I suppose. So the solution is to become aware. If you focus on these thoughts for a few days,it will become much easier with practice, and soon it’ll be hard not to notice.
Stop yourself.Once you realize you’re making these comparisons, stop yourself.Don’t feel bad—just admit the thought, and gently change the focus.
Count your blessings.Focus on what you do have, and on what you are already blessed with.Count what you have, not what you don’ t have.Think about how lucky you are to have what you have,to have the people in your life who care about you.If you always want what others have, you will never have enough. You will always want more. That’ s an endless cycle, and it will never lead to happiness.Instead, learn to realize that what you have is already enough.
Focus on your strengths.Instead of looking at your weaknesses, ask yourself what your strengths are.Be proud of them.Work on using them to your best advantage.
________No one is perfect—we all know that. But we seem to feel bad when we don’t reach perfection. You aren’t perfect and you never will be.Keep trying to improve, but don’t think you’ll ever be the “perfect person”.If you realize that imperfection is what makes you who you are,you are already perfect.
71.The writer’s purpose in writing this passage is to________.
A.explain why some people often think poorly df themselves
B.prove that often comparing ourselves with others is harmful
C.give us tips on how to stop comparing ourselves with others
D.tell us why some people like comparing themselves with others
72.The first thing the writer suggests we do is to________.
A.realize nobody can avoid social comparisons
B.find out why we like comparing ourselves with others
C.know that social comparisons are very difficult to make
D.become aware that we are making social comparisons
73.What does the writer advise us to do in Paragraph 4
A.Admit the fact that others are better than us.
B.Be satisfied with what we already have.
C.Make friends with people who care about us.
D.Realize we will get what we don’ t have yet.
74.What’s the best title for the last paragraph
A.Learn to become perfect.
B.Don’t feel bad about yourself.
C.Be OK with not being perfect.
D.Try to improve yourself all the time.
75.According to Paragraph 5,we should________.
A.believe only a few people are perfect
B.look at other people’s weaknesses
C.know our differences make us who we are
D.learn to be proud of our own strengths

Farmers might think the idea of growing food for fun sounds strange. But there are some people who do it all the time.
They grow some vegetables because their natural color or shape is pleasing to see. They grow others because scientists have developed new colors or different size for traditional vegetables.
One example is the bell pepper (胡椒).Seed companies sell seeds for several different kinds of bell peppers. One pepper is a weak yellow color when it begins to grow. Then its color changes to white. As it grows,it changes color two more times—to orange, then red.
Another unusual plant is known as the yard long bean or snake bean.It grows up to one meter in length. It is an important part of the food supply in areas of Asia.
American farmers like it because it is different, yet tastes very much like the green beans they traditionally grow. Each bean has been from ten to twenty seeds. The outside or pod (豆荚) can be eaten. Some of the very long beans are green outside but have black and white or red seeds.
Gourds (葫芦) are plants that people like to grow because of the many different shapes. They also have many uses. Some round gourds are dried, painted and made into containers (容器).Others have long necks and big bodies. These are dried, cut and made into ladles (勺).
Another kind of gourd is used to make sponges (海绵).When it is fully grown,it is removed from the vine (藤) and permitted to dry for a few weeks. Then it is placed in water for a few hours. The outer shell is then removed. The gourd is placed in the sun to dry. When it is fully dry,it is cut into pieces for use as sponges. They have a rough surface. They can be used to clean away dead skin cells, which makes them a popular skin care product.

Text 10
Jack was born in a very poor family. At seven,he dug coal from a deserted mine to earn a few coins to help his parents. He had no schooling because he was so poor.
When he was fifteen,he worked as a servant at a school.Looking at other children studying in the classroom,he felt ashamed of himself. He wished he had the same chance. He decided to study by himself. From then on,in the daytime,he would stand by the window outside trying to hear what the teacher said.At night,he tried to remember what he had learned during the day.He studied so hard that he sometimes had just three or four hours sleep. The more he learned, the more interested he became.A math teacher discovered him and liked this diligent boy and allowed him to sit at the back of the class. In one exam,he got the highest grade. He would have been given a scholarship if he had been a regular student.
Jack struggled through six long years with his study of math and wrote several articles, which got the attention of the university professors. They appreciated his talent as well as his diligence and hired him as a librarian.

26.D be accustomed to doing sth.表示“习惯于做某事”,speak to与主语she之间是动宾关系,所以用speak to的 ing形式的被动结构,故选D。
可知,out of control失控;out of distance超出距离;out of reach够不着均不符合句意。out of range超出射程范围,故选A。
在not only...but also... accuse sb.of doing sth./charge sb.with doing sth.
33.D It is time that...
There be no need to do sth.
36.B 从文章的主题句“Scientists find that hard working people live longer than average men and women.”

come across意为“偶遇;偶然发现”;look down upon意为“轻视,瞧不起”;watch over意为“看守;照顾”,均不符合文意。
B,a sense of achievement成就感。
in a word简言之;without a word二话没说;at a word反应迅速地,立即。

64.D 根据第二段第二、三句“It is found that half the hospitals in England which admit children have no teacher.A further quarter have only a parttime teacher.”
65.B 由“Children tend to rely on concerned school friends to keep in touch with school work”可知,他们求助的是同学。

Most often we do these social comparisons without realizing we’re doing it.It’s a natural act,I suppose. So the solution is to become aware.
Instead, learn to realize that what you have is already enough.
