A crew of six teenage girls completed a nine-day sailing trip in the US recently, after braving seasickness and strong winds.
For the past three years, the Sea Cadet teenagers who set sail were all male. Roger Noakes, who captained the boat, said this was the first time he’d taken out an all-female crew.
The girls asked for an all-girls trip in August this year. The crew set sail along with three adults, Noakes and two Sea Cadet representatives. The original plan was for the girls to sail 24 hours a day in rotating shifts (轮流换班) along the coast and then return. Things turned out differently, however.
“The first night was rough because the wind was really hard. The waves were going up and down,” said Abby Fairchild, 16. “Everybody got seasick.” Noakes gave the girls the option of just sailing in the bay and not going into open water. “But they decided they were going.”
The teenagers then sailed a long way overnight and slept in shifts. “We’ve learned everything from steering (掌舵) the boat itself to putting up the sails to cooking while we have rough seas,” said 15-year-old Olivia Wilcox.
The teenagers stopped on land in Massachusetts. They didn’t make it to their original destination in Maine, where they were supposed to have a celebratory dinner, due to the weather and winds. They said they weren’t disappointed, however, as they’d learned a lot. “They learned about boating, and above all, they built confidence and character,” said Noakes.
24. What was special about the US Sea Cadet trip this year?
A. It was the longest sailing trip ever.
B. It was the first all-female-crew sailing trip.
C. It was the most dangerous sailing trip ever.
D. It was the first sailing trip for teenagers.
25. What happened on the crew’s first day of the trip?
A. They all got seasick.
B. They regretted taking the trip.
C. They decided to stay in the bay.
D. Some of them were injured.
26. Which of the following best describes these young sailors?
A. Determined and cooperative.
B. Hard-working and talented.
C. Understanding and creative.
D. Adventurous and skillful.
27. According to Noakes, what was the sailors’ greatest benefit from the trip?
A. They acquired excellent sailing skills.
B. They learned to work in teams.
C. They built confidence and character.
D. They knew the sea better.

While employers are all highlighting the importance of crucial (决定性的) soft skills — such as emotional intelligence and learning ability — as determinants(决定因素)of performance, the most competitive roles require graduate credentials (研究生学历), to the point of going beyond current levels of supply. At the same time, the number of people going to university continues to rise, effectively devaluating the undergraduate degree (大学本科学位). So more and more of the workforce is considering going to graduate school.
What, then, are the pros and cons you should weigh up if you are trying to decide whether or not to go to graduate school?
In terms of advantages, a graduate education increases your salary potential — it’s no secret that people who have graduate school degrees are generally paid more money than those who don’t.
Moreover, as AI and automation are replacing many roles with others, a growing percentage of workers are being pushed to reskill and upskill to remain relevant(相关的), and there’s no doubt that most of us will have to reinvent ourselves at some point if we want to do the same. If you find yourself in this situation currently, grad school may not be a bad choice.
The challenge will be picking what to major in. If you set yourself to be a strong candidate for jobs that are in high demand, you risk being too late to the game by the time you graduate.
But what if you can learn for free? There is much online content — books, videos and more — now widely available, at no cost, to the general public. If you want a master’s degree simply to gain more knowledge or acquire a new skill, it’s important to recognize that it’s possible to recreate learning experiences without paying thousands of dollars for a class.
And you may be wasting your time. Historically, people have mostly learned by doing — there is a big difference between communicating the theoretical experience of something and actually going through that experience.
Most people would probably prefer the qualifications of a graduate degree without the underlying (根本的) experience and education, to the actual experience and education without the formal qualifications that follow. What is actually valued are the consequences of having a degree, rather than the degree itself.
28. In employers’ eyes, graduate credentials .
A. are far more important than soft skills
B. guarantee the possession of crucial soft skills
C. are becoming less and less valuable
D. are still necessary for the most wanted positions
29. What can we learn from Para. 4?
A. Everyone needs self-improvement to stay employed.
B. AI and automation are making self-improvement increasingly easy.
C. Technical development is driving people to improve themselves.
D. Technical development will lead to more serious unemployment.
30. What might the author think of learning with online content?
A. Convenient and affordable.
B. Not as reliable as graduate school classes.
C. Time-consuming with the large amount of content.
D. More interesting with the diverse forms of materials.
31. Which is the best title for this passage?
A. Should You Go To Graduate School?
B. How Much Value Does A Graduate Degree Have?
C. How Will A Graduate Degree Change Your Life?
D. Which Is More Important: A Degree or Ability?

D
In our everyday lives and in our personal and professional pursuits (追求), one of the best personal growth keys you and I should pursue is a healthy amount of self-awareness. Put simply, without self-awareness, we are tricking ourselves into living out life through the imagination of reality instead of reality. On the contrary, when we’re not tricking ourselves, we are putting ourselves in a position to grow and succeed.
Fundamentally, the more you know about yourself, the better you are at adapting to change, growing healthily. So, how do you become self-aware? One of the most effective ways is to invite honest feedback (反馈) into your life. I grew up in a generation in which everyone got a prize just for showing up. And while I am an enormous supporter of encouragement, false feedback only masks blind spots in a person’s character. Worse yet, a sustained(持久不变的)“everyone gets a prize” culture supports mediocrity (平庸). Of course, on one likes hard conversations, but I’d like to advocate developing the maturity of character to get real self-awareness, and keep us sharp and effective as we meet the challenges of everyday life.
Yet amid (在…之中) all this, there’s one more key ingredient for self-awareness, and that’s applied self-knowledge. Imagine texting while driving. Being a slave to the ping of the latest message, you take your focus off the road in order to glance at your phone. A few seconds later, your eyes back on the road, you’re dangerously driving into the opposite way. Our self-awareness can tell us, “I mustn’t text while driving.” When we can understand the motivations behind our thoughts and actions, followed by our action plan to conduct our accompanying behavior, we’ll be better experiencing lasting growth. Self-awareness is not undervaluing ourselves; nor is it self-consciousness. Instead, self-awareness will keep us focused on what matters most and keep us away from those things that will distract us from our purpose, allowing us to be aware of our blind spots.
We can read all the self-help guides and personal growth strategies that money can buy, but if we don’t know ourselves well enough to put any of it into effective, specific practice, we’ll never arrive at the greatest place of success possible in this short life. And that is simply, yet powerfully, becoming the version of who we were meant to be.
32. What can be inferred from Paragraph 1?
A. We all tend to cheat others.
B. We all tend to live in our dreams.
C. Self-awareness helps us understand our surroundings better.
D. Self-awareness helps us become a better version of ourselves.
33. What does the author advise us to do?
A. Try our best to develop our ability.
B. Keep active, optimistic and friendly.
C. Face authentic comments in a positive manner.
D. Accept the encouraging words from others pleasantly.
34. With the example of texting while driving, the author tries to say .
A. the danger of managing two things at once
B. the importance of making an action plan
C. the benefit that self-awareness may bring
D. the skill of using self-awareness in the real life
35. What can be the best title for the passage?
A. How to Take Negative Feedback?
B. How to Develop a Mature Personality?
C. Unlocking the Power of Self-awareness
D. Self-awareness Begins With Self-knowledge

As the most popular sport in the world, soccer is played by people of all ages. The sport is enjoyed
by 265million players, including both professional and amateur athletes. While soccer players are known for their skilled footwork, they also use their head. This technique is called heading. 36 Is heading in soccer dangerous? It’s a question that has met its fair share of controversy(争论,辩论).
If you’ve never played soccer, heading may look pretty dangerous to the poor brain. 37
Yes, there is a technique for meeting a flying ball with your head.
Dr. Frank Webbe, a former soccer referee and coach, says there is good reason to believe that with proper technique, a player’s risk of brain injury is low. The problem is that in a fast-paced game of soccer obstacles (障碍) sometimes prevent a player from heading with good technique. 38
Webbe and his colleagues tested soccer players in neurocognitive (神经认知的) performance such as attention, concentration, and speed of thinking. They compared long-time soccer players to new players, as well as medium-to-frequent headers to less than medium headers. In addition, they tested people who had played soccer recently as well as people who hadn’t played in some time.
39 As a group, frequent headers performed lower on cognition tests in the week after a game of frequent heading than medium headers did. Also, players with the highest lifetime estimates of heading scored lowest overall on these cognition tests.
The results convince Webbe that heading does indeed pose a threat to brain function. 40
However, it’s also possible to slowly develop symptoms after repeated smaller injuries.
A. And that’s when problems are likely to arise.
B. It is when a player deliberately hits the ball with his head.
C. But the impact of heading presents a risk of head and brain injury.
D. A player hits the ball with his head to move it in a certain direction.
E. However, soccer players know that there is a proper way to head the ball.
F. Some injuries are severe enough to cause problems immediately or after a few seasons.
G. The results suggested that more frequent headers are at more risk of brain injury than less frequent headers.

There was a guy who fell in love with a girl. This romantic guy folded 1000 pieces of paper cranes (千纸鹤) as a gift to his girl. Although at that time his future didn’t seem too bright, they were happy together. Until one day, his girl told him she was going to Paris and would never come back. She explained that she can’t see any future of them. So they’d better go their own ways and then heartbroken, they guy agreed.
When he regained his confidence, he worked hard day and night. “You never fail until you stop trying,” he always told himself, “I must make it in life!” Finally this guy successfully set up his own company.
On a rainy day, while this guy was driving, he saw an elderly couple sharing an umbrella in the rain walking. It didn’t take him long to realize they were his former girlfriend’s parents. He drove slowly beside the couple, wanting to show them that he was in his expensive car. He wanted them to know that he wasn’t the same as before anymore and he had his own company, car, etc. He had achieved success in life.
Before the guy could realize, the couple walked towards a cemetery (墓地), and he got out of his car and followed them then he saw his former girlfriend, a photograph of her smiling sweetly as ever at him from her tombstone (墓碑) and he saw his precious paper cranes in a bottle placed beside her tomb.
Her parents saw him. He walked over and asked them what happened.
They explained. She did not leave for France at all. She had a cancer. In her heart, she had believed that he would make it someday, but she did not want her illness to be his burden on his way to success.
Therefore she had chosen to leave him.
She asked her parents to leave his paper cranes by her side, if one day the fate brought him here, he could take some back home. The guy just wept.

读后续写
The elderly couple walked towards him and told him not to cry. “She would be saddened by your tears if she were here.” They said. Words knotting in his throat, he couldn’t utter a syllable but wept as the figures of the couple gradually faded. Umbrella slipped out of his hands, rain wet his clothes and he was heartbroken. Those sweet and bitter memories flashed across, and then he grabbed one crane with trembling hands. Eyes lingering on the same smile he used to obsess with, he shuffled toward his car like a drunken man.
After going home, the guy wanted to do something special. Apart from his career, he dedicated himself to the foundation of a charity which was aimed to aid anyone who was diagnosed with cancer. Tough as the task was, the guy would always regain his confidence when glancing over the precious crane. Ultimately, against all the odds, the charity was set up. Only then did the guy go back to the cemetery where he left another 1000 pieces of newly-folded paper cranes by his lover’s side.

W: Not really. If you take the No. 3 bus, you can get there in 10 minutes. And if volleyball doesn’t interest you, they’ve got a huge indoor swimming pool, a weight room, and indoor tracks. It’s a great place to meet people.
M: Now that you mention it, it would be nice to get away from the computer center for a change. Since I came to this computer company, I work till late night almost every day. I’ve gotten so fat.
W: Look at me. You’re not the only one! At high school, I had a lot more time to play sports. Now, the little spare time I have must be used wisely! At least the club is open until midnight.
M: I guess it’s worth a visit. Did you say you’re going tomorrow night?
W: Yeah.
M: OK, I’ll come, too. How about meeting me in front of the cinema at eight, and we’ll catch the bus there?
W: Sure.
Text 10 (159词) 新图书馆
M: Now I must apologize for the mess you can see around you today. This new building has been here for only two months, and as a result we have not quite finished moving in! So far, we have moved the book and journal collections from the old library into this new building. There are two exceptions: we are now busying in moving the music collection here, which should be all here by tomorrow, and we will be moving the history collection into this building next week. But, as you can see, we are still building the new restaurant and the new lab. We have finished the cafe. We have recently had 150 computer places and we will be adding another 100 by next month. Don’t forget that the library isn’t just about the textbooks and journals. There is a wide collection of national newspapers. Besides, don’t forget our website at www.mlbc.ac.uk. There’s a full book list. Now, any questions?
