On 8th November 1974 Lord Lucan, a British aristocrat disappeared. The day before, his children's nanny had been murdered and his wife had been attacked too. To this day the British public are still interested in the murder case because Lucan has never been found. Now, over 30 years later, the police have reopened the case, hoping that new DNA techniques will help solve this murder mystery.
People suspected that "Lucky", as he was called by friends, wanted to kill his wife he no longer lived with. They say that Lucan entered his old house and, in the dark, killed the nanny by mistake. His wife heard noises, came downstairs and was also attacked, but managed to escape. Seven months later after the murder, a jury concluded that Lucan had killed the nanny.
What happened next is unclear, but there are several theories which fall into one of three categories: he may have killed himself, he could have escaped or he might have been killed. It appears that the night after the murder, Lucky borrowed a car and drove it to the English coast. In 2000, John Aspinall, a close friend of Lucan's said in an interview that he thought Lucan had committed suicide by sinking his boat in the English Channel.
Another version of events says that Lucky left the blood-soaked car on the coast and took a Ferry to France. He was met there by someone who drove him to safety in another country. However, after a time, his rescuers became worried that they would become involved in the murder too and so Lucan was killed.
A further fascinating theory was made in the book Dead Lucky by Duncan Maclaughlin, a former detective. He believes that Lucan travelled to Goa, India, where he assumed the identity of a Mr Barry Haplin. Lucan then lived in Goa till his death in 1996. In the end the claim turned out to be a case of mistaken identity. The man who died in 1996 was really Haplin, an ex-school teacher. So what is the truth about "Luchy"? DNA testing has solved many murder cases, but who knows if it can close the book on this one.
56. The official conclusion of the case involving the nanny is that ________.
A. Lucan murdered her. B. Lucan's wife killed her.
C. She committed suicide. D. She died for Lucan's wife.
57. What can be learned from paragraph 3 and 4?
A. Lucan might have fled to America.
B. Lucan might have been murdered by someone.
C. Lucan might have got drowned in France.
D. Lucan might have lived until 2000.
58. Which of the following statements about Dead Lucky is TRUE?
A. What it revealed brought light to the old case.
B. It was written by a close friend of Lucan's.
C. What it claimed turned out to be false.
D. It mistook Lucan for Mr Barry Haplin.
59. The best title of the passage might be
A. Mr Barry Haplin - new identity.
B. John Aspinall - the case closer.
C. Dead lucky - a fascinating theory.
D. "Lucky' Lord Lucan - alive or dead?

COMMENTS FROM ONE USER
A well-designed app, and great value for less than one euro. The illustrations are fun, and I particularly liked the fact that audio recordings are provided for the examples. One criticism I do have is that having found the idiom, you have to consult the dictionary to find out what it means. It would have made more educational sense to have the definition available while you're trying to find the idiom. And there are a few bugs and spelling mistakes which need to be fixed. All in all though, I'm giving this one the thumbs up.

"The Heart of the Matter," the just-released report by the American Academy of Arts and Sciences, deserves praise for affirming(肯定)the importance of the humanities and social sciences to the prosperity and security of liberal democracy in America. Regrettably, however, the report's failure to address the true nature of the crisis facing liberal education may cause more harm than good.
In 2010, leading congressional Democrats and Republicans sent letters to the American Academy of Arts and Sciences asking that it identify actions that could be taken by "federal, state and local governments, universities, foundations, educators, individual benefactors and others" to "maintain national excellence in humanities and social scientific scholarship and education."
In response, the American Academy formed the Commission on the Humanities and Social Sciences, with Duke University President Richard Brod-head and retired Exelon CEO John Rowe as co-chairmen. Among the commission's 51 members are top-tier-university presidents, scholars, lawyers, judges, and business executives, as well as prominent figures from diplomacy, film-making, music and journalism.
The goals identified in the report are generally admirable. The report supports full literacy: stresses the study of history and government, particularly American history and American government: and encourages the use of new digital technologist.
To encourage innovation and competition, the report calls for increased investment in research, the crafting of coherent curricula that improve students' ability to solve problems and communicate effectively in the 21st century, increased funding for teachers and the encouragement of scholars to bring their learning bear on the great challenges of the day. The report also advocates greater study of foreign languages, international affairs and the expansion of study abroad programs.
Unfortunately, despite two and a half years in the making, "The Heart of the Matter" never gets to the heart of the matter: the illiberal nature of liberal education at our leading colleges and universities. The commission ignores that for several decades America's colleges and universities have produced graduates who don't know the content and character of liberal education and are thus deprived of its benefits. Sadly, the spirit of inquiry once at home on campus has been replaced by the use of the humanities and social sciences as vehicles for publicizing 'progressive," or left-liberal propaganda(宣传).
Today, professors routinely treat the progressive interpretation of history and progressive public policy as the proper subject of study while portraying conservative or classical liberal ideas -- such as free markets, self-reliance and a distrust of central planning - as falling outside the boundaries of routine, and sometimes legitimate, intellectual investigation.
The AAAS displays great enthusiasm for liberal education. Yet its report may well set back reform by obscuring the depth and breadth of the challenge that congress asked it to illuminate.
63. Influential figures in the Congress required that the AAAS report on how to _________.
A. retain people's interest in liberal education
B. define the government's role in education
C. keep a leading position in liberal education
D. safeguard individuals rights to education
64. Which one of the following does the AAAS report suggest?
A. An exclusive study of American history B. A greater emphasis on theoretical subjects
C. The application of emerging technologies D. Funding for the study of foreign languages
65. The author implies that professors today are _________.
A. routinely supportive of free markets B. cautious about intellectual investigation
C. conservative about public policy D. prejudiced against classical liberal ideas
66. Which of the following would be the best title for the text?
A. Ways to Grasp "The Heart of the Matter"
B. "The Heart of the Matter": Illiberal Education
C. The AAAS's Contribution to Liberal Education
D. Progressive Policy vs. Liberal Education

A Dream Come True
The young professor was working in his workshop in a narrow street in Boston, not far from Scollay Square. It was a very hot afternoon in June, but the man did not notice. He was totally absorbed in his strange machine which he had been working on for about three years. Suddenly he heard an almost inaudible sound, the first sound ever transmitted through a wire. The machine was the very first telephone and the young man was Alexander Graham Bell.
At the age of 16 Alexander started to help teach young deaf mutes, children who could not hear or speak. He used his father's system of 'visible speech', a form of sign language, and achieved amazing results. __67__ Mr Alexander Ellis, a professor of philology, and Sit Charles Wheatstone, an expert in telegraphy, started him thinking about sending sounds through a machine.
Unfortunately, it was around this time that the fatal disease called the white plague, spread through Britain and both Alexander's brothers died. __68__ Alexander was teaching to a tribe of Mohawk Indians in a small Canadian town called Brant-ford, when the Boston Board of Education asked him to come and work in the USA at a new school for deaf mutes.
Alexander was happy to move to Boston and continue the work he had stated in Britain. __69__
Then, two years later, he agreed to give private lessons to a young boy whose family allowed him to use their basement as a workshop. This gave Alexander the opportunity to resume, his experiments with sound transmitters. He used to spend all his free time, and most of his money, on his inventions. __70__. She was a young girl who had lost her tearing and the ability to speak because of a childhood illness. Her name was Mabel Hubbard, and four years later they got married.
In order to survive financially Bell had to work on the musical telegraph, but he also continued working on his mechanical voice transmitter. He became so successful that he soon opened his own school called "The School of Vocal Physiology". Almost a year later, in March 1876 the first words were heard coming through the phone.
IV. Summary Writing
Directions: Read the following three passages. Summarize the main idea and the main point(s) of the passage in no more than 60 words. Use your own words as far as possible.
Becoming an attractive employee
The 2008 financial crisis created an unstable job market. Fast-forward to the present, and the economy has not fully recovered. Thus, it's of vital importance for job seekers to carefully strategize their approach to job application. And it is especially important for those new to the workforce. They should look at making themselves as attractive as possible to employees.
For young people, information technology skills will play an increasing role in the future. As the generation to have grown up in the Information Age, they are quite confident when it comes to showing off their interests and skills in this field. This makes them a natural fit for companies seeking expertise(专业技能)in technology, marketing, and networking. They should emphasize these skills when applying for jobs that require the ability to multitask.
Another attractive quality is experience. It is important that an applicant's resume list any activities that involved teamwork and goal-driven responsibilities. Membership in a sports or social club and participation as a volunteer are good examples of this. These activities involve goal management and planning, along with the ability to focus while competing on a team. When hiring committees see this, they see a candidate who is capable of working in a variety of environments.
Finally, an attractive quality when job-hunting is a great attitude toward a potential job. Young job seekers are known to be overconfident because they have been praised for everything they have done. But they must realize that the employment market is about how an employee will be a good fit for a company, not the other way around. In fact, in an interview, an important question to ask is: "What would be expected of me as an employees?"
