When I was 25, I opened a “Professional Training School”. One of my first students was a forty-year-old woman named Eleanor. She was in my mother’s age group. By taking my self-development course, she had made up her mind to make some changes.
Our course began with the instruction in proper behaviour and continued with healthy diet, taking exercise, choosing clothes, make-up, public speaking, etc. We taught the students to show themselves perfectly, and to express their natural beauty. Eleanor tried her best during the training. Her sad, tired attitude changed into a smart, interested and curious way. She changed her hair style and make-up with up-to-date fashion She even bought some new clothes that would bring color to her skin and hair.
At the end of the course, Eleanor pulled me aside. With stars in her eyes she said, “Betty, guess what ” Not having any idea what she was up to, I replied simply, “What, Eleanor ” As happy as a child, she said, “My husband has invited me to lunch!”
It was diffi cult for me to understand at that time. Then I just said, “Well, that’s really nice, Eleanor.” Her words were serious and she told me that her husband hadn’t invited her to lunch in the last twenty years.

Christmas is coming, and I can see many people welcome Christmas in their special way in Japan. My students seem to know about some Christmas customs (习俗), but I wonder if they know about the “Christmas spirit” or the spirit of giving. At Christmas time, we give gifts to our friends and family members. We give toys and clothing to families that do not have much money. We give money to organizations that help poor, sick, or lonely people.
Even young children can learn to understand why we often say, “Giving is more important than receiving.” For example, a mother and her child will make something special for Dad and keep it a secret. When Dad opens his gift on Christmas morning, he is surprised and happy. The child learns that making someone happy is just as much fun as, or maybe more fun than, receiving gifts.
Gifts are not always expensive things in pretty boxes. Sometimes, gifts may be a promise to write a letter every week or help with fi xing up grandma’s house. In my family, we often give each other simple gifts that were made by ourselves and most of them cost little or no money. Then, together, we give a gift of money to our favorite charity These gifts are often more meaningful than gifts that we buy from a store.

Street art can be found on buildings, sidewalks, and street signs all over the world.
Many experts say it started in New York City in the 1960s. Young people would spray (喷) their names on walls and trains around the city. This colorful style of writing is also called graffiti (涂鸦). Later, graffiti became a movement expressing the street culture of young people living in big cities. Some artists traveled around the city, making paintings for everyone to see. What they enjoy most is the freedom of expressing themselves which street art permits (允许).

But please note that, not all verbs can be used in the “-ing” form to express future actions. Such verbs as come, go, leave, fly, walk, ride, drive, stay, meet, die, see, have, arrive etc. are mainly used in the “-ing” form to express future actions.

Tibet lies on the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau of the southwest border of China. The highest peak of Tibet, also the highest in Himalayas and in the whole world, is Everest Peak, which is as high as 8,846.27 meters above sea level. Although a part of China, Tibet has a unique culture of all its own. It is mainly inhabited by Tibetans, a minority nationality of old and mysterious people. Tourist attractions include the Potala Palace in Lhasa, Jokhang Temple, and a number of Buddhist sacred places.Tibet (Xi Zang in Chinese) is to the south of Xin Jiang Uygur Autonomous Region and Qing Hai Province, to the west of Sichuan, to the northwest of Yunnan and to the north of India and Nepal. Its population of 2.3 million people come from a variety of ethnic groups including Tibetan, Han, Monba and Lhota. Its capital city is Lhasa.Northwest Tibet, mainly Qing Hai plateau, is home to a variety of unusual and unique animals. Across the northern expanse of Tibet, you can see vast grasslands where horses, yak and sheep roam freely. The world's lowest valley, the Grand Yarlun-tzanpo River Valley lies in east Tibet. It is freezing cold in most time of the year. Most tourists come to visit Tibet only in the warmest seasons, June, July, August and early September.

A selected English passage for recitation
Why do people travel Well, first of all, I think there are a number of reasons why we travel. The main reason is curiosity. We're curious how other people live, what food they eat. What is the taste of that food How do other people entertain How do they make friends Our nature isn't permanent, and our tastes changes during life cycles. We want to try something new from time to time (new food, new clothes, shoes, perfume and etc.) Our travel can involve new friends and it gives a spark to our routine life. We dream about a trip around the globe as a panacea from our problems. But when we can't afford traveling even inside our own countries it becomes a psychological problem for our mind and body. I wish that all people could travel at least locally, within a region or a state. Traveling gives us a feeling of belonging to this world and our role in the global living! “Son!” Tim’s father shouted, “Is it possible you could please turn that noise down ”
“Sorry, Dad, but I love to play it loud because it makes me happy!” Tim replied while driving. He had bought the car a week before he got his driver’s license. The old car was all he could afford with the money he’d earned.
“Tim,” his father asked, “What makes you happy by listening to that screaming guitar and what’s the name of that trash ”
“The song is called Happy.”
“All I hear is that noisy guitar.”
“You never listen long enough to hear the words!”

More than half of the world’s population lives in cities. Traffic and pollution are becoming big problems in big cities all over the world. In cities like Mexico City, Shanghai or Cairo the quality of the air is getting worse every day. In the United States, people spend more time sitting in traffic jams.
Some of the world’s cities have already found the answer to the problem. In Bogota, the capital of Columbia, the government has taken measures to improve the quality of life for the city’s 8 million people. They created over a thousand new parks, a new public transport system, and built hundreds of cycling and walking paths. People who live in the city also joined in making their city one of the most livable (适合居住的) places in South America.
Today city planners around the world are looking for ways to provide more room for living and less room for cars. In America, public transport has increased over 2 % since the mid 1990s — not much but a start. More and more people leave their cars at home and get on buses, trains or even ride a bike to work. Some cities are far better at planning than others. In Amsterdam, for example, only 40 % of the population uses their cars to get to work, 35 % rides a bike while 25% uses public transport. In Paris, about half of the city’s workers drive their cars to work.
For cities in developing countries, the problems have just started. Traffic is getting worse as more and more people can afford to buy a car.
44. The writer listed Mexico City, Shanghai and Cairo as examples of cities of ______.
A. heavy traffic B. air pollution
C. rapid development D. large population
45. What did Bogota do to improve the quality of life for its people
A. It shut down some factories in the city.
B. It introduced a foreign public transport system.
C. It encouraged people to plant trees in the city.
D. It built new parks and a new public transport system.
46. From the third paragraph, we can learn that ______.
A. 35% of the population in Paris rides a bike to work
B. half of the people in Amsterdam drive their cars to work
C. a quarter of the people in Amsterdam use public transport
D. American public transport has increased much since the 1990s
47. What would be the best title of the text
A. Ways to solve traffic jams B. New changes in transport systems
C. People’s new choice in big cities
D. Parks instead of cars for the cities
D
Gold Coast family holidays are always great fun whether you are from Australia or from abroad. There are beautiful beaches, adventure parks, nature parks and so much more.
There are so many sights to see here. It is a pity to drive in a car and you’ll miss a great part of it. Australia is home to many animals and birds that can only be seen when moving slowly and going into the areas that they live.
When you are on a bicycle, you have the advantage of being able to stop whenever you want to catch sight of (看见) an interesting animal or bird that you have never seen before. It is a quieter mode (方式) of transportation as well, so you might even be able to take a picture. When you are on the beach, you can breathe that clean air and view the beauty of the water and sand. It is a totally different experience from either simply sunbathing or passing it in a car.
There are many choices of hiring (租) a bicycle to experience the Gold Coast attractions. There are stores that will fit a bike perfectly to your size. These bikes for both adults and children are in many styles and colors to please any taste. If you have ever wanted to try a tandem bike (双人单车), now is your chance, because they have those too.
A bicycle hire on Gold Coast is something that everyone should try at least once. This is a wonderful chance for anyone who likes to cycle and it is also a cheap way to travel with your family.
48. You’d better not drive in a car on Gold Coast because ______.
A. you will break the traffic rules B. you will cause much noise

A. you can take photos of animals B. it is a cheap way of traveling

In a small town in France, there was a farmer who lived alone. Every day, he sold a pound of butter to his neighbor, who was a baker (面包师). One day the baker decided to weigh the butter to see if he was getting a pound and after weighing it, he found that he was not. The baker immediately took the farmer to court.
The judge (法官) asked the farmer if he was using any measure. The farmer replied, “I am so poor that I do not have a proper measure, but I do have a scale (天平).” The judge asked, “Then how do you weigh the butter ” The farmer replied, “Long before the baker started buying butter from me, I have been buying bread from him. Every day when I bring home the bread from my neighbor, I put it on the scale and give him the same weight in butter.”
We get back in life what we give to others.

Dear Mary,
How are you doing these days
My family and I are really grateful that you showed us around when we visited London last week. We had a really good time.
Without your help, we couldn’t have had such a wonderful trip because none of us had been to London before. We visited the British Museum and other well-known beautiful buildings, and we had the delicious food there. We enjoyed ourselves very much. We hope we will visit London again.
If you have a chance to come to China, give us a call. We would enjoy having you come for dinner and getting together again.

□ border
□ village
□ candles
□ lights
□ truck
□ ducks
□ chickens

2. What did Wang Kun and his sister see when they cycled across the plains
As they cycled across the plains where rice grew, they saw many low mountains covered in trees.
3. Which is the best season to travel to
Laos Why
Autumn was the best season to travel to Laos. Because it was cool and dry at that time so there was no need to worry about floods along the river.
4. What did the river sound like
5. How did they go to Vientiane after
lunch
We met Dao Wei and Yu Hang in Dali. They were glad to join us for the second week of our journey down the great river. Before we set out, we went to a small outdoor cafe and told them about what we had seen in Tibet.
Listening Text
Along the way, children dressed in long wool coats stopped to look at us. I told them how it was so cold in the late evening that the water in our bottles froze. The lakes shone like glass in the moonlight. Few trees could be seen.
I said we were so high in the mountains that we cycled through clouds. In the valleys, colorful butterflies flew around us. We saw many yaks and sheep eating green grass. That night we were too tired to make camp, so we slept in an inn for truck drivers.
They told us many wonderful stories about life in this part of China.
The next day we went across the border into Laos. Most of its western border is made by the Mekong River. Laos, we learned, has the smallest number of people of any country in Southeast Asia.
Much of the world knows little about it. As we cycled across the plains where rice grew, we could see many low mountains covered in trees. We had planned our trip well. We were told that autumn was the best time to be traveling here and it was true. It was cool and dry so there was no need to worry about floods along the river.

One summer my friend and I decided to go to Italy for a holiday and we decided to travel there without going through a travel agency. You know, you would be submerged (淹没) in crowds of tourists and lose lots of opportunities to get familiar with the country more closely. We started to think over our trip and managed to come up with a free tour of Italy.
The trip was not very long but it was still very impressive. We look forward to going there again! Of course, we spent lots of time arranging the trip, but it was well worth it! Of course I was afraid that something would go wrong and I was especially anxious about my visa, but everything went quite smoothly in the end.
The most difficult part was getting a visa without an invitation. In the Italian consulate(领事馆), one must hand in some official paper proving that one has a hotel booked for oneself in order to get the visa. Then we had to solve the ticket problem. Airlines often sell cheap tickets and we bought ours far in advance. The next step was to book a hotel. We finally booked a hotel about thirty km away from the heart of Rome and it was the perfect choice for our trip.
Every day we took a train that carried us to the heart of Rome. Our big house, which was surrounded by the forest, was a rare girl for the fresh air and absolute silence, beautiful views, hospitable (好客的) hosts, comfortable living conditions delighted us to no end. Besides this, we were very lucky that our mistress was Russian. She gave us a lot of advice that was of great use. She told us what transport to choose and where the best places to go.
Don’t be afraid to arrange your trip by yourself. It’s not difficult! The only thing I’ll say right now is that we really enjoyed traveling by ourselves. We walked with a map and a guide-book to wherever we wanted and we even met some of our fellow countrymen on the way just two or three times. So, if you’re also planning a "single" trip, don’t forget to take a Russian-Italian phrasebook as people in Italy prefer to speak in their native tongue.

Some time ago I discovered that one of my chairs had a broken leg. I didn’t think there would be any difficulty in getting it mended, as there are a whole lot of antique(古董) shops near my home. So I left home one morning carrying the chair with me. I went into the first shop expecting a friendly reception (接待). I was quite wrong. The man wouldn’t even look at my chair.
The second shop, though slightly more polite, was just the same, and the third and the fourth-so I decided that my approach must be wrong.
I entered the fifth shop with a plan in my mind. I placed the chair on the floor and said to the shopkeeper, "Would you like to buy a chair " He looked it over carefully and said, "Yes, not a bad chair. How much do you want for it, sir " "Twenty pounds," I said. "OK," he said, "I’ll give you twenty pounds." "It’s got a slightly broken leg," I said. "Yes, I saw that, it’s nothing."
Everything was going according to plan and I was getting excited. "What will you do with it " I asked. "Oh, it will be easy to sell once the repair is done." "I’ll buy it," I said. "What do you mean You’ve just sold it to me," he said. "Yes, I know but I’ve changed my mind. I am sorry. I’ll give you twenty-seven pounds for it." "You must be crazy," he said. Then, suddenly the penny dropped. "I know what you want. You want me to repair your chair." "You’re right," I said. "And what would you have done if I had walked in and said, ‘ Would you mean this chair for me ’”. “I wouldn’t have agreed to do it," he said.
根据第二段 “The trip was not very long but it was still very impressive. We look forward to going there again!”结合第四段的内容以及最后一段中的“The only thing I’ll say right now is that we really enjoyed traveling by ourselves.”
根据第三段的第一句“The most difficult part was getting a visa without an invitation.”
文章第一段第二句讲述了他们不愿意随旅行社出游的原因,B项提到了;文章第二、三两段讲述作者怎么去准备他的出行的,所以C项提到了;根据最后一段的“We walked with a map and a guide-book to wherever we wanted…”
I didn’t think there would be any difficulty in getting it mended, as there are a whole lot of antique shops near my home.
I know what you want. You want me to repair your chair.
But I’ll mend this for you, shall we say for a fiver
He was a very nice man and was greatly amused by the whole thing.
69. C根据“It seemed as if we had long been good friends.”
70. B从她的谈话中,特别是“She had a lot to share with all of us at that camp.”

OK, everyone. May I please have your attention I’m Bill Smith, the director of the school play for this year. It’s a great pleasure to have you as assistants to help organize the play. I’m sending around a form for you to put down some information on how we can get in touch with you, so please put your names and phone numbers down. Also please write down the performances that you will be able to help with. I realize that not everyone can come to each performance, but the more you attend, the better. Once you have all marked down any special skills you might have to offer, please return the form to me. At our next meeting on Tuesday, we’ll begin talking about all the different jobs. While you’ re waiting for the sheet to get passed around, I’ll be happy to answer any questions that you have today.

About the topic and the structures单元话题和结构 本单元的话题是“Travel Journal/ 旅行日志”。
Period 2 将Learning about language 和Workbook中的 USING WORDS AND EXPRESSIONS、USING STRUCTURES
Period 5 将Workbook 的LISTENING TASK、READING AND WRITING TASK和 SPEAKING TASK整合为一节“综合技能课(二)”。

A man had two large pots. One of the pots had a crack (裂缝) in it, so while the other pot always delivered (运送) a full pot of water at the end of the long walk from the stream to his house, the cracked pot arrived only half full. This went on every day for years.
One day a neighbor asked the man, “One of your pots has been broken for years. It can only deliver half its load, so you don’t get full value from your efforts. Why don’t you buy a new one ”

Many years ago in a small village, an old man was hired to clear the spring (泉水) up on the mountain. He patrolled (巡逻) the spring every day, and swept away all the leaves and other things that would dirty the fresh flow of water. Soon, beautiful swans (天鹅) came to the clear spring, and the village became a popular attraction for visitors.
Years passed. One evening the town leaders held a meeting. As they looked at the salary list, one of them said, “Why do we keep this old man on year after year I don’t think we need him or his work.” Later, the old man was asked to leave.

Nobel Prize-winning author Doris Lessing said winning the Noble Prize in 2007 had been a “bloody disaster”.
The increased media (媒体) interest in her has meant that writing a full novel was next to impossible, she said.
Lessing, 88, also said she would probably be giving up writing novels. Her latest book is the partly fictional memoir(虚幻小说)entitled Alfred and Emily. Since her Nobel winning she has been constantly in demand, she said. “All I do is to give interviews and spend time being photographed.”
Speaking about her writing, she said: “It has stopped. I don’t have any energy any more.” Lessing is the 11th woman to win the Nobel Prize for literature in its 106-year history. Her best known works include The Golden Notebook and The Diaries of Jane Somers(《萨默斯的日记》).
She also recalled that, in the 1960s, she had been told that the Nobel Academy’s judges did not like her and she would never win. Ill-health prevented her from attending the prize ceremony in Stockholm, Sweden.
Instead the Swedish Ambassador to London, Staffan Carlsson, presented the prize to her in the UK. He told her she was being “crowned with a prize you have long deserved(应得)”.
Lessing was born in Iran and moved to Rhodesia—now Zimbabwe—as a child before settling in England in 1949.
Her first novel The Grass is singing was published the following year. Altogether she has written more than 50 novels, plays and collections of short stories.
52. Why did Lessing say her winning the Nobel Prize was “a bloody disaster”
A. She was too excited to go on writing her novels.
B. Her peaceful life was disturbed by the increased media.
C. Many people came to ask her for advice on writing.
D. The Swedish Ambassador often came to present the prize.
53. Lessing didn’t go to Stockholm to get the prize because ____.
A. she thought of the prize as a “bloody disaster”
B. too many interviews prevented her from going there
C. she didn’t want to accept the prize
D. her poor health stoped her from going there
54. From the passage we know that the Nobel Prize for literature was set up ____.
A. in 1901 B. in 1921 C. in the 60s D. in 1949
55. Lessing was given the Noble Prize because ____.
A. she was an 88-year-old woman B. she was a famous writer
C. she did a lot to the literature
D. she is the oldest writer in the world

Dear Mary,
How are you doing these days
My family and I are really grateful that you showed us around when we visited London last week. We had a really good time.
Without your help, we couldn’t have had such a wonderful trip because none of us had been to London before. We visited the British Museum and other well-known beautiful buildings, and we had the delicious food there. We enjoyed ourselves very much. We hope we will visit London again.
If you are in our city in the coming months, give us a call. We would enjoy having you come for dinner and getting together again.
