B
54-year-old
Abdul
has
a
special
job.
He
has
been
working
as
a
living
statue
(活体雕像)
for
over
three
decades,
standing
perfectly
still
for
six
hours
a
day
and
resisting
people’s
attempts
to
make
him
move
or
smile,
anything
that
proves
he
is
a
living
person.
Abdul,
known
as
“India’s
Statue
Man”,
has
been
performing
his
daily
routine
ever
since
1985,
soon
after
getting
a
job
as
a
security
guard.
His
boss
had
recently
traveled
to
the
UK,
where
he
was
so
impressed
by
the
statue-like
members
of
the
Royal
Guard
outside
Buckingham
Palace
that
he
wanted
to
do
something
similar
back
home.
So
he
had
his
guards
receive
three
months
of
training,
where
they
would
sit
perfectly
still
for
around
four
hours.
They
weren’t
allowed
to
talk
or
smile,
eat,
drink,
or
even
shoo
away
a
fly
if
it
sat
on
their
faces.
In
the
end,
Abdul
proved
the
best
of
the
group,
so
he
got
the
strange
job.
Abdul
isn’t
the
only
person
in
the
world
acting
as
a
living
statue,
but
what
makes
him
special
is
the
fact
that
he
can
do
it
for
as
long
as
six
hours
without
even
blinking
his
eyes.
Once,
a
$
155
prize
was
put
up
for
anyone
who
can
make
him
move
a
muscle.
But
try
as
they
might,
no
one
has
ever
succeeded.
Actually,
Abdul
tries
to
move
about
as
much
as
he
can
in
his
spare
time,
and
only
eats
healthy
home-cooked
food,
to
keep
his
body
in
shape.
But
he
claims
yoga
has
been
the
biggest
help.
In
the
32
years,
Abdul
has
become
a
celebrity
in
India
and
other
Asian
countries.
Many
Bollywood
celebrities
have
come
to
witness
this
living
statue
and
try
to
finally
make
him
move,
but
none
have
succeeded.
Abdul
earns
about
10,000
rupees
($
156)
a
month,
which
is
enough
to
support
his
family,
but
definitely
not
enough
to
encourage
his
children
to
follow
in
his
footsteps.
It’s
just
too
stressful
and
taxing
on
the
body.
“Despite
all
the
hardship
and
health
problems,
I
love
my
job
and
I
am
thankful
to
people
for
the
love
and
respect
they
have
showered
on
me”
he
says,“
When
the
time
comes,
I
want
to
die
playing
a
statue.”

strange
job

by
his
boss?

Most
of
us
don’t
reach
for
that
gnarled
(
多节的
)
carrots
when
selecting
our
produce
at
the
local
supermarket.
That’s
exactly
why
Americans
waste
up
to
40%
of
eatable
food
every
year.
This
unbelievable
number
has
sparked
the
“ugly
food”
movement,
and
inspired
many
companies
to
sell
misshapen
fruit
and
vegetables
to
consumers,
rather
than
throw
them
in
the
trash.
One
San
Francisco
organization
is
taking
a
unique
approach
to
this
idea.
The
Salvage
Supperclub
hosts
fancy
dinners
inside
dumper
truck
(
卸车
)
where
they
serve
dishes
entirely
prepared
with
food
that
would
have
otherwise
gone
to
waste.
Josh
Treuhaft,
founder
of
these
ugly
food
dinners,
originally
came
up
with
the
idea
to
bring
awareness
to
America’s
food
waste
problem.
“There
is
undeveloped
potential
in
their
food
that
for
some
reason,
not
to
their
own
fault,
is
going
to
waste,”
he
told
Seeker’s
Laura
Ling.
Treuhaft
isn’t
alone
in
his
effort
to
reduce
America’s
food
waste.
A
Change.org
last
year
called
for
Whole
Foods
to
become
part
of
the
ugly
food
movement.
They
sold
misshapen
fruit
and
vegetables
in
Northern
California
stores.
Selling
imperfect
produce
is
still
relatively
rare
right
now,
which
can
be
partially
due
to
a
supply
issue
rather
than
a
lack
of
willing
participants.
Raley’s,
a
Sacramento-based
grocery
chain,
started
an
ugly
food
pilot
program
called
“Real
Good”,
but
discontinued
it
after
90
days
saying
they
had
“some
challenges
sourcing
the
product”.
A
grower
might
have
large
amounts
of
ugly
produce
one
year
due
to
terrible
weather,
but
much
less
the
next
year
if
the
weather
has
been
more
ideal.
Harvests
constantly
vary
and
retailers
are
more
likely
to
buy
ugly
produce
in
large
number
rather
than
just
a
few
pounds
at
a
time.
This
is
why
organizations
like
Imperfect
Produce
and
Salvage
Supperclub
are
playing
an
important
role
in
the
prevention
of
food
waste.
Salvage
Supperclub
takes
it
a
step
further
by
not
only
buying
the
ugly
produce,
but
turning
it
into
a
good
dining
experience
as
well.

A.
Many

What’s
Josh
Treuhaft’s
advice
to
reduce
America’s
food
waste?
A.
People
should
reduce
the
ugly
food
B.
People
should
make
full
use
of
ugly
food.
C.
People
should
be

A
scientist
turned
out
to
be
able
to
see
the
future
by
offering
each
of
some
four-year-olds
a
piece
of
candy
and
watching
how
he
or
she
dealt
with
it.
Some
children
reached
eagerly
for
the
candy
they
saw.
Some
lasted
a
few
minutes
before
they
gave
in.
But
others
were
determined
to
wait
until
the
last
moment.
By
the
time
the
children
reached
high
school,
something
amazing
had
happened.
A
survey
found
that
those
who
were
four-year-olds
having
enough
self-control
to
hold
out
generally
grew
up
to
be
more
popular,
adventurous,
confident
and
dependable.
The
children
who
gave
in
to
temptation(诱惑)early
were
more
likely
to
be
lonely,
easily
upset
and
inflexible.
Actually,
the
ability
to
delay
reward
is
a
sign
of
emotional
intelligence
which
doesn't
show
up
on
an
IQ
test.
The
hardware
of
the
brain
and
the
software
of
the
mind
have
long
been
scientists'
concerns.
But
brain
theory
can't
explain
what
we
wonder
about
most,
like
the
question
why
some
people
remain
upbeat
in
the
face
of
troubles
that
would
sink
a
less
resistant(有抵抗力的)soul.
Here
comes
the
theory
of
Daniel
Goleman,
writer
of
Emotional
Intelligence:
when
it
comes
to
predicting
people’s
success,
brain
ability
measured
by
IQ
may
actually
matter
less
than
the
qualities
of
mind
once
thought
of
as
“characters”.
EQ
is
not
the
opposite
of
IQ.
What
researchers
have
been
trying
to
understand
is
how
they
work
together
and
how
one’s
ability
handles
stress,
for
instance,
affecting
the
ability
to
concentrate
and
putting
intelligence
to
use.
Among
the
ingredients(要素)for
success,
researchers
now
gradually
agree
that
IQ
counts
for
about
20%,
the
rest
depends
on
everything
from
social
class
to
luck.
While
many
researchers
in
this
relatively
new
field
are
glad
to
see
emotional
issues
are
finally
taken
seriously,
some
few
fear
EQ
invites
misuse.
32.
Why

When
you
sleep,
do
you
ever
realize
that
you
are
dreaming?
If
yes,
then
you
have
had
a
lucid
dream
(清醒梦).
36
Only
some
people
are
able
to
have
them.
Now,
scientists
have
found
ways
to
help
more
people
to
have
lucid
dreams,
Live
Science
reported.
Denholm
Aspy
from
the
University
of
Adelaide
in
Australia
found
that
certain
skills
are
key
to
helping
people
have
lucid
dreams.
First,
people
can
train
themselves
to
figure
out
whether
they
are
dreaming
or
not.
For
example,
someone
may
look
at
a
clock,
look
away,
and
then
look
back.
37
Then,
they
might
dream
about
this
trick
while
sleeping.
But
in
their
dreams,
the
time
on
the
clock
may
change
very
quickly.
So
people
know
they
are
dreaming.
Another
trick
is
to
wake
up
after
five
hours
of
sleep.
38
During
this
time,
repeat
the
words,
“The
next
time
I’m
dreaming,
I’ll
remember
that
I’m
dreaming.”
Then,
go
to
bed
again
to
enter
rapid
eye
movement
(REM,快速眼球运动)
sleep.
In
REM
sleep,
people
are
more
likely
to
be
aware
of
their
dreams.
Scientists
found
that
those
who
used
these
tricks
had
a
17
percent
success
rate
at
having
lucid
dreams.
39
In
a
lucid
dream,
people
might
study
a
hobby
and
then
become
better
at
it
in
real
life,
according
to
Aspy.
For
example,
you
might
learn
to
play
the
piano
in
a
lucid
dream.
40
A.
The
time
should
stay
the
same.
B.
Then,
stay
awake
for
a
while.
C.
Then,
your
real-life
piano
skills
might
improve.
D.
Some
people
will
need
more
time
to
fall
asleep
and
have
a
dream.
E.
It
is
hard
for
most
people
to
have
a
lucid
dream.
F.
This
was
far
higher
than
if
they
did
nothing.
G.
People
learn
new
skills
faster
in
a
lucid
dream.

After
some

he

amazed,
turning

The
best
gift
I
have
ever
received
is
a
hand-made
calendar.
It
was
made
up
by
my
best
friend?Jane,
with
who
I
have
so
much
in
common.
On
each
page
of
the
calendar,
there
is
the
picture
of
us
with
some
word
written
by
Jane.
She
either
tells
me
what
she
feels
about
our
friendship
or
encourages
me
try
my
best
and
live
a
happy
life.
Whenever
I
look
at
the
calendar,
I
am
touched
by
something
warmly,
and
my
heart
is
filling
with
love.
This
gift
is
a
memory
of
the
wonderful
time
I
spend
with
Jane
in
junior
high
school
and
I
will
keep
them
forever.
