I was born with vision(视力) problem, and over the years, my eyesight gradually wors-ened. Once I was in the first year of my PHD, I was almost 100% blind.
Though I am blind, my great passion is climbing regardless of many challenges.
I started climbing when I was young. My dad took me up my first rock route when I was
two. He taught me everything he knew and I led my first route outside when I was 11. At that time I had about 20% vision, unable to pick out the routes from the ground.
I met my wife Molly at a climbing club. We didn't climb together very much because we
normally led those who hadn't done as much as we had. We were just friends at first, but eventually romance c浪漫) arose.
In fact, I proposed(求婚) to her in 2017 0n a climbing trip to Greenland. It was my most
difficult trip, camping in temperatures below -200C. I didn't have diamond ring at that time.
In the end I went down on one knee with a special ring made by myself. She said yes, but then
I fell down and somehow dropped the ring. So it's still there!
It's quite possible that I wouldn't be a good climber if I weren't blind-if I didn't have these challenges. It wouldn't focus me. That determination is built through my disability.

It is widely believed that biodiversity (生物多样性) is promoted to save species. But in
reality species exist only as part of ecosystems and cannot survive unless their ecosystems are
protected along with as much as possible of the diversity they contain.
Protecting habitats(栖息地) i\s important for keeping biodiversity. In 2003, over 102,000
habitats covering nearly 19 million square kilometres, or 11. 5 % of the world's land surface, were under some form of protection. Though this is a great improvement since 1962, when just l,000 protected habitats were listed, it is still not considered enough to stop the ecocide that is endangering the world's biodiversity.
For a number of environmentalist, protecting the world's 25 biodiversity hotspots(热点地区) is critical to saving habitats and species. But many hotspots are endangered already, hav-ing lost up to three-quarters of their original plants.
The poor state of most biodiversity hotspots results directly from population growth and migration(迁移) into these areas. A study found that by the mid-1990s around l. I billion people liVed in these hotspots. Moreover, the annual population growth rate in these areas was l. 8%, higher than the global average of l. 4%. The PAI report concluded that human-related environmental changes will continue to put pressure on hotspots. Therefore, keeping biodiversity requires paying close attention to population size.
Protecting hotspots is not simply a matter of putting up fences and employing guards. The best results are achieved when local people are educated about the value of wildlife, and actually gain a share of the benefits from eco-tourism. Only then do they have a chance to see the benefits of protecting hotpots.
28. What can we infer from paragraph l?
A. The loss of any species can affect humans.
B. Endangered species are paid more attention to by humans.
C. Species can still survive when their ecosystems are destroyed.
D. Ecosystem protection is as important as diversity protection.
29. What does the underlined word“ecocide" in paragraph 2 mean?
A. Ecosystem protection.
B. Reduction of the number of species.
C. Serious damage to habitats.
D. Habitats protection.
30. What's the direct cause of the terrible state of the hotspots?
A. Population growth in hotpots.
B. Migration out of these areas.
C. Global warming.
D. The global average population growth rate.
31. What's the author's opinion on protecting the hotspots?
A. It's simple to carry out.
B. It leads to the increase of tourists.
C. It's closely connected with local people.
D. It suggests that the local people are well educated.

Depression (抑郁症) in young adult males, ages 18 0r 19, is linked to a 20yo greater risk
of having a heart attack in middle age, according to a new Swedish study.
The link can be partly explained by poorer stress resilience(抗压能力) and lower physical
fitness among teens with mental disorders.
The research included 238,013 men born between 1958 and 1962 who were given exami-
nations in adolescence(青春期) and were then followed into middle age (up to the age of 58
years). A total of 34,503 men were diagnosed(诊断) with a mental disorder.
The study found that a mental disorder in young adulthood was linked to a higher risk of
having heart attack by middle age. Compared to men without a mental illness in young adult-
hood, the risk of heart attack was 20% higher among men with a diagnosis.
“We already knew that men who were physically fit in adolescence seem less likely to keep fitness in ater years if they have low stress resilience. " said study author Dr. Bergh, “Our research has also shown that low stress resilience is also connected with a greater tend-ency towards bad behaviour, such as higher risks of smoking, drin ing and other drug use. "
"Better fitness in adolescence is likely to help protect against later heart disease, particu-larly if people stay fit as they age. Physical activity may also reduce some of the bad effects of stress. Those in poor health could benefit from additional support to encourage exercise and develop p ans to deal with stress,"said Bergh.
32. How does the author develop paragraph 3?
A. By listing figures. B. By giving examples.
C. By making a comparison. D. By drawing a conclusion.
33. What are men with low stress resilience likely to do?
A. Sleep less. B. Eat more. C. Smoke more. D. Do less exercise.
34. What will Bergh agree with according to the last paragraph?
A. Physical activity can't help reduce stress.
B. Stress may cause heart disease.
C. Taking exercise is unnecessary.
D. Staying fit is always of great importance.
35. In which section of a newspaper may this text appear?
A. Entertainment. B.Health. C.Education. D.Fashion.
