A
Dating
back
to
2002,
this
is
the
fifth
time
that
I
have
traveled
overseas
to
work
with
Roma
people,
whom
you
probably
know
better
as
“gypsies”.
Every
time
I
came
home
feeling
as
though
I
had
gotten
far
more
than
I
gave.
The
Roma
live
mostly
in
central
and
eastern
Europe
and
to
some
extent
in
the
Americas.
Due
to
some
reasons,
throughout
their
history
they
are
usually
the
last
to
be
hired
and
the
first
to
be
fired,
generally
speaking.
They
live
far
away
from
town
normally
and
in
relative
poverty.
Getting
education
is
a
common
subject.
That
is
where
we
come
in.
This
time,
I,
along
with
three
other
men,
was
working
in
a
village
in
Slovakia.
Most
Roma
people
there
can’t
speak
English
well,
and
we
went
to
help
out
with
that,
hoping
to
make
a
difference
to
their
life.
Staying
with
the
Roma,
I
have
learned
anyone
can
help
others.
The
first
time
I
went
abroad
was
to
work
with
a
Roma
charity.
When
we
arrived
in
a
small
village
in
Hungary,
we
found
that
several
of
the
Roma
were
missing.
They
would
return
the
next
day,
because
they
had
traveled
a
few
hours
away
to
serve
in
a
prison.
That
is,
these
who
we
thought
needed
us
were
off
helping
some
other
people
who
needed
them.
We
may
think
we
are
traveling
over
to
“give”
to
them.
Actually,
we
also
received
warm
hospitality.
Some
small
gifts
would
sometimes
come
our
way,
as
they
expressed
their
thanks.
On
the
last
day
of
this
trip,
the
local
Roma
warmly
invited
us
to
stay
for
a
coffee
with
home-baked
sweets.
These
poor
people
always
find
some
ways
to
welcome
trusted
visitors.
Here
what
I
want
to
say
is
that
the
Roma
people
that
I
have
worked
or
talked
with
are
just
as
smart
and
able
as
we
are.
They
are
wise
Roma
people
in
many
ways,
though
having
lived
quite
differently
from
most
of
us.
There
is
nothing
fault
born
with
them.
They
are
in
every
way
that
matters.
We
are
all
the
same
human
beings.

C
The
ancient
Herculaneum
scrolls
(卷轴)
are
thought
to
contain
works
of
important
thinkers
in
ancient
Greece.
But
the
scrolls
can’t
be
unrolled.
Even
a
light
wind
threatens
to
reduce
them
to
dust.
The
reason
is
that
they
were
turned
into
carbon
by
a
natural
disaster
in
A.D.
79.
But
now
researchers
from
the
University
of
Kentucky
have
found
a
way
to
look
inside
the
scrolls
without
having
to
touch
them.
They
first
create
a
light
that
is
10
billion
times
brighter
than
the
sun
by
taking
advantage
of
a
machine.
Then
they
will
use
the
light
to
go
through
the
Herculaneum
scrolls
to
study
and
finally
read
the
words
recorded
on
the
scrolls.
Researchers
think
it
might
take
them
six
months
to
read
the
scrolls.
This
isn’t
the
first
time
researchers
have
tried
to
read
the
Herculaneum
scrolls.
Several
years
ago
scientists
from
the
European
Synchrotron
Radiation
Facility(ESRF)
worked
on
uncovering
the
mystery
using
an
X-ray
beam
100
billion
times
brighter
than
anything
used
in
a
hospital.
This
didn’t
allow
scientists
to
actually
read
the
scrolls,
but
it
allowed
them
to
make
one
surprising
discovery.
The
scrolls
were
written
in
metallic
ink,
a
writing
technology
that
scientists
didn’t
know
existed
at
the
time
the
scrolls
were
penned.
“For
a
long
time,
we
thought
our
studies
have
let
us
know
everything
about
the
ancient
ink
used
to
write
on
scrolls.
Now
we
find
it’s
not
the
case.
This
shows
that
we
should
tell
ourselves
it
may
not
be
true
when
thinking
we
fully
know
something
once
some
research
is
done,”
said
Daniel
Delattre,
one
of
the
study’s
authors.
The
finding
wasn’t
just
a
historical
interest.
To
learn
just
how
special
these
scrolls
are,
consider
that
the
thinker
Chrysippus
in
ancient
Greece
is
said
to
have
written
over
70
works;
but
all
are
lost,
with
the
exception
of
a
few
works
found
in
the
Herculaneum
scrolls.
In
other
words,
it’s
possible
that
these
scrolls
represent
the
only
existing
complete
works
left
by
this
great
thinker.
And
who
knows
what
other
great
works
could
exist
in
the
scrolls?
8.
What
do
we
know
about
the
Herculaneum
scrolls?
A.
They
were
damaged
by
people
in
A.D.
79.
B.
They’re
impossible
to
read
for
a
long
time.
C.
They
have
been
poorly
kept
in
the
past
few
years.
D.
They
can
be
easily
found
in
the
libraries
at
present.
9.
What’s
Paragraph
2
mainly
about?
A.
The
reasons
why
scientists
create
a
powerful
light.
B.
The
new
method
to
read
the
Herculaneum
scrolls.
C.
The
comparisons
of
the
man-made
light
with
the
sunlight.
D.
The
advantages
of
using
machine
to
study
the
Herculaneum
scrolls.
10.
What
achievement
did
the
ESRF’s
scientists
make?
A.
Creating
a
kind
of
ink
similar
to
the
ancient
one.
B.
Finding
more
about
the
ancient
way
to
record
information.
C.
Showing
the
paper
material
used
for
the
Herculaneum
scrolls.
D.
Making
clear
some
words
written
in
the
Herculaneum
scrolls.
11.
Chrysippus’
works
are
mentioned
in
the
last
paragraph
to
show
________.
A.
the
Herculaneum
scrolls
are
probably
of
great
value
B.
the
thoughts
of
ancient
thinkers
are
widely
spread
C.
the
Herculaneum
scrolls
are
recognized
by
different
writers
D.
the
culture
of
ancient
Greece
helps
us
know
its
situation
then
D
We
all
want
to
be
happy.
In
the
pursuit
of
happiness,
we
often
purchase
shiny
things,
visit
new
places,
and
change
our
appearances,
but
the
truth
of
the
matter
is
that
these
small
bursts
of
high
excitement
cannot
last
long.
We
tend
to
let
one
simple
human
necessity
slip
away:
conscious
kindness.
Conscious
kindness
is
an
act
of
looking
for
opportunities
to
be
kind
to
others
and
yourself.
Usually
acts
of
kindness
are
performed
when
the
opportunity
arises,
such
as
holding
the
door
open
for
someone
and
returning
an
item
dropped
on
the
ground
to
the
person
walking
ahead
of
us.
We
call
these
“random
acts
of
kindness”.
In
other
words,
there
is
no
pattern,
meaning
or
plan
to
focus
on
your
act.
Conscious
kindness
pushes
you
out
of
your
comfort
zone
and
sends
you
into
the
world
to
deliberately
add
moments
of
kindness
to
someone’s
life.
A
recent
study
set
out
to
investigate
the
effect
of
a
seven-day
kindness
activity
on
changes
in
subjective
happiness.
It
was
found
that
performing
acts
of
kindness
for
seven
days
boosted
the
participants’
well
being
more
than
that
of
the
control
group
who
performed
no
acts
of
kindness.
It’s
no
surprise
that
“a
positive
correlation
can
be
drawn
between
the
number
of
kind
acts
and
an
increase
in
happiness”.
(Lee
Rowland
&
Olive
Scott
Curry,
The
Journal
of
Social
Psychology)
When
you
open
your
mind
to
changing
the
way
you
see
the
world,
you
begin
to
be
consciously
kind.
To
do
this,
you
must
begin
with
yourself.
Being
kind
to
yourself
first
and
this
is
where
goodness
will
be
born;
the
goodness
that
comes
from
you
can
then
be
shared
and
spread
to
those
around
you.
Speak
gently
to
yourself.
You
become
what
you
think
about.
Struggling
with
and
dwelling
on
negative
thoughts
will
only
waste
your
energies.
Then
move
on
to
giving
conscious
kindness
to
those
around
you.
Realize
that
behind
every
face
you
see
on
the
street
is
a
story
you
will
never
fully
know.
Understand
that,
overall,
people
are
good,
and
they
just
want
to
live
a
happy
life.
Practice
being
a
kind
person,
and
you
will
be
amazed
at
those
who
follow
you
and
you
will
silently
influence
their
lives.

书面表达:(满分25分)
Dear
Davis,
My
name
is
Li
Hua,
a
student
from
Grade
One
in
our
school.
I
am
also
a
member
of
the
Student
Union.
Hearing
that
you
need
a
student
to
work
as
your
assistant,
I
am
very
interested
in
that
and
would
like
to
have
a
try.
First
of
all,
I
am
good
at
English
and
have
a
good
knowledge
of
foreign
cultures,
which
I
think
will
make
our
communication
easier.
My
work
in
the
Student
Union
has
also
made
me
experienced
in
teamwork
and
glad
to
help
others.
Besides,
I
think
this
work
offers
a
good
chance
to
improve
myself
and
benefit
all
the
other
classmates.
As
a
hardworking
and
responsible
student,
I
think
I
will
be
qualified
for
this
job.
If
I
succeed
in
applying
for
this
position,
I
will
try
hard
to
cooperate
with
you
and
support
your
work,
making
a
good
balance
between
my
study
and
work.
I
am
looking
forward
to
your
early
reply.
Yours
sincerely,
Li
