阅读理解(共两节,满分40分)
第一节
(共15小题;每小题2分,满分30分)

Around
45%
of
plastic
waste
is
recycled
annually
in
the
UK
and
is
on
the
increase.
However,
one
of
the
problems
with
present
plastic
recycling
methods
is
that
you
end
up
with
a
lower-quality
plastic
with
worse
properties
(特性)than
the
original.
This
means
that
plastic
drink
bottles
cannot
simply
be
recycled
into
new
drink
bottles
continuously,
but
instead
are
used
for
other
lower-grade
products
like
park
benches.
Now,
British
scientists
have
developed
a
new
method
of
chemical
recycling.
They
use
lower
temperatures
and
more
environmentally-friendly
starting
chemicals
than
previous
methods
to
turn
plastics
back
into
their
constituent
chemical
molecules
(分子).In
this
way,
they
can
be
used
to
make
new
plastics
of
the
same
quality
as
the
original.
"Most
plastic
is
now
recycled
using
mechanical
methods,
where
they
are
transformed
into
liquids
before
being
made
into
something
new,"
said
a
professor
named
Matthew
Jones.
"The
problem
is,
melting
plastic
changes
its
properties
and
reduces
the
quality.
Out
method
of
chemical
recycling
overcomes
this
problem.
Then
plastics
can
be
used
all
over
again
without
losing
any
properties?"
The
researchers
are
recycling
some
kinds
of
plastics,
including
plant-based
PLA,
a
plastic
used
for
food
packaging
and
PET,
which
is
used
for
drink
bottles.
So
far,
the
technology
has
only
been
demonstrated
on
a
small
range.
However,
scientists
are
now
working
to
produce
larger
quantities
of
starting
chemicals.
"There
is
no
single
solution
to
the
problem
of
plastic
waste

the
approach
has
to
be
a
combination
of
reducing,
reusing
and
recycling.
Our
method
of
chemical
recycling
could
allow
carbon
to
be
recycled
endlessly
rather
than
digging
more
up
from
the
ground
in
the
form
of
fossil
fuels,
or
letting
it
into
the
atmosphere
as
a
greenhouse
gas,"
said
Dr.
Paul
McKeown
from
the
University
of
Bath.
1.
What
is
the
problem
with
the
present
plastic
recycling?
A.
The
quality
of
recycled
plastics
declines.
B.
Plastic
drink
bottles
cannot
be
recycled.
C.
The
amount
of
plastic
waste
is
increasing.
D.
Recycled
lower-grade
products
sell
badly.
2.
How
do
scientists
recycle
plastic
waste
with
the
new
method?
A.
By
transforming
it
into
fuels.
B.
By
heating
it
into
liquid
state.
C.
By
keeping
its
original
properties.
D.
By
changing
its
molecule
structure.
3.
What
can
we
learn
from
what
Dr.
Paul
McKeown
said?
A.
Fossil
fuels
are
endless
resources.
B.
The
plastic
waste
problem
has
no
solution.
C.
Recycled
carbon
leads
to
greenhouse
gases.
D.
The
chemical
recycling
is
environment-friendly.
4.
In
which
part
of
the
website
can
we
find
the
text?
A.
Business.
B.
Tech
&
Science.
C.
Lifestyle.
D.

【答案】1.
A
2.
C
3.
D
4.
B
【解析】
本文是新闻报道。文章讲述了当前塑料回收方法的问题之一是最终会得到质量比原来低的劣质塑料。英国科学家已经开发出一种新的化学回收方法,可以用来制造质量与原始塑料相同的新塑料,而且对环境是有好处的。
【1题详解】
细节理解题。根据第一段中的“This
means
that
plastic
drink
bottles
cannot
simply
be
recycled
into
new
drink
bottles
continuously,
but
instead
are
used
for
other
lower-grade
products
like
park
benches.”可知,但是,当前塑料回收方法的问题之一是最终会得到质量比原来低的劣质塑料。即目前的塑料回收的问题在于再生塑料的质量下降了。故选A。
【2题详解】
推理判断题。根据第三段中的“Most
plastic
is
now
recycled
using
mechanical
methods,
where
they
are
transformed
into
liquids
before
being
made
into
something
new.
The
problem
is,
melting
plastic
changes
its
properties
and
reduces
the
quality.
Out
method
of
chemical
recycling
overcomes
this
problem.”可知,现在大多数塑料都是通过机械方法回收的,在将它们转变为液体之前,先制成新的东西。问题是,熔化塑料会改变其性能并降低质量。化学回收的方法克服了这个问题。因此判断出科学家通过保留塑料的原始属性的方法回收利用塑料废物。故选C。
【3题详解】
推理判断题。根据最后一段中的“Our
method
of
chemical
recycling
could
allow
carbon
to
be
recycled
endlessly
rather
than
digging
more
up
from
the
ground
in
the
form
of
fossil
fuels,
or
letting
it
into
the
atmosphere
as
a
greenhouse
gas.”可知,我们的化学回收方法可以使碳无止境地得到回收,而不是从地下挖掘更多的矿物燃料或者将其作为温室气体排放到大气中。因此我们可以从Paul
McKeown博士的讲话中判断出化学回收方法对环境是有好处的。故选D。
【4题详解】
推理判断题。文章讲述了当前塑料回收方法的问题之一是最终会得到质量比原来低的劣质塑料。英国科学家已经开发出一种新的化学回收方法,可以用来制造质量与原始塑料相同的新塑料,这对环境是有好处的。由此判断出,我们可以在网站的技术与科学栏目找到这篇文章。故选B。
B
Still
in
shock!
I
moved
around
the
house
purposelessly
trying
to
decide
what
to
put
into
the
suitcases(行李箱).
Earlier
that
evening,
I’d
received
a
call
telling
me
that
my
brother
was
killed
in
a
car
crash.
“Come
as
soon
as
you
can.”
cried
my
mother.
I
wanted
to
hurry
to
her
at
once.
But
my
husband,
Larry,
and
I
were
packing
to
move
from
New
York
to
Seattle.
Our
house
was
in
total
mess.
Supper
dishes
sat
on
the
kitchen
table.
Toys
lay
everywhere.
I
purposelessly
picked
things
up
and
put
them
down.
Mother’s
crying
went
through
my
head
again
and
again.
Larry
called
some
friends
to
tell
them
what
had
happened.
Someone
asked
to
speak
to
me.
“If
there’s
anything
I
can
do,
let
me
know.”
But
I
didn’t
know
what
to
ask
for.
Suddenly,
the
doorbell
rang.
It
was
Emerson.
He
and
his
wife
Donna
lived
in
the
block
nearby.
“I’ve
come
to
clean
your
shoes,”
he
said.
I
asked
him
to
repeat.
“Donna
had
to
stay
with
the
baby,”
he
said,
“but
we
want
to
help
you.
I
remember
when
my
father
died,
it
took
me
hours
to
clean
our
shoes
for
the
funeral(葬礼).
Give
me
all
your
shoes.”
I
gathered
all
our
dirty
shoes
to
the
kitchen.
Emerson
got
to
work
right
away.
Watching
him
devoting
himself
to
one
task
helped
me
pull
my
own
thoughts
into
order.
I
told
myself
to
wash
clothes
first.
Then,
Larry
and
I
bathed
the
children
and
put
them
to
bed.
One
job
after
another.
When
we
returned
to
clear
the
dishes,
Emerson
had
left.
All
our
shoes
stood
in
a
line
against
the
wall,
clean,
shining.
I
couldn't
help
crying.
Early
next
morning,
we
left
for
the
airport
with
all
the
jobs
done.
Now
whenever
I
hear
of
a
friend
who's
lost
a
loved
one,
I
no
longer
call
with
the
polite
offer,
“If
there’s
anything
I
can
do
…”
Instead
I
try
to
think
of
one
specific
task
that
suits
that
man's
need,
like
taking
the
dog
to
the
boarding
kennel,
or
house-sitting
during
the
funeral.
If
the
person
asks,
“How
did
you
know
I
needed
that
one?”
I
reply,
“Because
a
man
once
cleaned
my
shoes.”

本文是一篇记叙文。文章作者讲述了自己和爱人在正值搬家的时候听到哥哥在一起车祸中丧生的噩耗而手足无措,有的人打电话来说"有任何需要做的请说",但有个叫艾默生的过来把作者家里所有的脏鞋都洗干净了,看着艾默生认真洗鞋的情形,让作者原来的手足无措变得平静有序起来。现在作者也效仿艾默生,如果听到某人失去了爱的人,不会只是礼貌的问候而是去为这个人做一件特别而正是他需要的事。
【5题详解】
推理判断题。根据第一自然段“Earlier
that
evening,
I’d
received
a
call
telling
me
that
my
brother
was
killed
in
a
car
crash.(那天晚上早些时候,我接到一个电话,说我哥哥在车祸中丧生)”以及第二自然段最后一句话“Mother’s
crying
went
through
my
head
again
and
again(母亲的哭声一次又一次地在我的脑海里回荡)”可知,哥哥在车祸中意外去世让全家人都很悲伤,作者的脑海里全是妈妈悲伤哭泣的声音。由此推断出作者太过于悲伤,从而什么事都做不了。故此题选B。
【6题详解】
细节理解题。根据第八自然段“I
gathered
all
our
dirty
shoes
to
the
kitchen.
Emerson
got
to
work
right
away.
Watching
him
devoting
himself
to

task
helped
me
pull
my
own
thoughts
into
order.
I
told
myself
to
wash
clothes
first.
(我把我们所有的脏鞋都收拾到厨房去了。Emerson马上就开始清洗鞋。看着他全神贯注于一项任务,我把自己的想法理顺了。我告诉自己先洗衣服)”可知,Emerson过来清洗鞋子后作者开始洗衣服,故此题选A。
【7题详解】
细节理解题。根据最后一自然段“Now
whenever
I
hear
of
a
friend
who’s
lost
a
loved
one,
I
no
longer
call
with
the
polite
offer(现在,每当我听到一个朋友失去了心爱的人,我不再礼貌地打电话)”可知,当朋友失去心爱的人之后,作者不会再打电话过去询问。故此题选A。
【8题详解】
推理判断题。通读全文,特别是最后一段的“Instead
I
try
to
think
of
one
specific
task
that
suits
that
man's
need(相反,我尽力去想一件特别而又是那人需要的事情,)”可知,作者通过自己的经历想要表达的是:当别人遇到困难时,应尽力做一些具体的事情帮助他们,故选D。

【解析】
本文属于说明文,作者通过这篇文章主要向我们描述了政府发现分心驾驶的案件与日俱增,需要采取措施使公众意识到分心驾驶的可怕后果,并且准备施行在车内禁用手机。
【9题详解】
细节理解题。根据第一自然段最后一句“Recently
the
Obama
administration
is
considering
disabling
cell
phones
in
cars,
aiming
to
cut
down
cell-phone-related
road
deaths(最近,奥巴马政府正在考虑禁用汽车中的手机,以减少与手机相关的道路死亡人数)”可知,奥巴马政府禁止在开车时使用手机的原因就是在开车时使用手机造成了很多的交通事故,并且想通过开车时禁用手机来减少事故的发生。故此题选C。
【10题详解】
细节理解题。根据第二自然段“Transportation
Secretary
Ray
LaHood,
the
nation’s
anti-distracted-driving
supporter,
said
in
an
interview
on
November
18
that
federal
officials
are
looking
at
technology
to
disable
cell
phones
inside
cars(美国反对分心驾驶的支持者,交通部长Ray
LaHood在11月18日的一次采访中说,联邦官员正在研究使汽车内的手机失效的技术)”可知交通部长Ray
LaHood反对在车内使用手机,并且希望在车内安装使汽车内的手机失效的技术。故此题选D。
【11题详解】
推理判断题。根据第四自然段“features
people
who
have
been
killed
or
lost
their
loved
ones
because
of
inattentive
drivers.
The
video
features
heartbreaking
stories
of

be
added
every
few
weeks.(主要是那些因疏忽大意的司机而丧生或失去亲人的人。这段视频讲述了儿童因打电话或发短信而在车祸中丧生的令人心碎的故事,并且预计每隔几周就会增加新的视频)”可知此活动播放的视频都与开车时使用手机,从而酿成大祸有关。由此推断出活动的目的就是通过这些视频,让大众了解开车时分心,会带来惨烈的后果,从而唤醒大家对于开车时不能分心的意识。故此题选B。
【12题详解】
推理判断题。根据文章最后一句“But
the
research
didn’t
ask
how
people
feel
about
government-issued
mobile
phone
scramblers
or
other
disabling
devices(但这项研究没有询问人们对政府发放的手机扰频器或其他装置的感受)”可知,政府在采取此措施时,并没有询问人们的感受。由此推断出作者也不确定政府所采取的行为是否被大众所接受。故此题选D。

Every
time
I
passed
boys
who
were
playing
basketball,
I
stopped
silently
to
watch
them.
I
really
envied
them.
But
as
a
girl,
I
once
thought
that
I
could
never
play
basketball.
I
like
playing
basketball
though
I’m
not

at

I’ve
had
a

I
was
a

At
first,
I
could
play
freely
because
no

But
as
I

it
seemed
harder

harder
for
me
to

basketball.
At

it
was

the

during

The

My

“Basketball

they

Even
when
I
went
to

basketball
with
my

boys
stared
at
me
on
the
court
as
if
I

I

of

I

This

Even
the

I

Confidence

I

I

Through

I

I

It

D.

【答案】13.
D
14.
B
15.
A
【解析】
本文是一篇记叙文,主要讲述了“我”作为一名女生追寻自己的爱好—篮球的故事。
【13题详解】
细节理解题。根据第二段首句的“I
like
playing
basketball.”展开,因而作者会停下来看男孩子打篮球是因为自己喜欢,D符合原文内容。本题应防止误选干扰项A,第一段中有“I
stopped
silently
to
watch
them.
I
really
envied
them.”(我安安静静地停下来看着他们,我真的很羡慕他们),但务必厘清此处逻辑,我停下来看篮球是因为我喜欢篮球,也正因为我喜欢篮球,看的时候我是羡慕的,故A不是对“原因”的准确概括,综上应选D。
【14题详解】
推理判断题。根据原文第三段(在学校)及第四段(在家里)的相关描述:“At
school,
it
was
always
the
boys
who
played
basketball
during
P.E.
classes.
The
girls
were
only
allowed
to
play
volleyball
or
badminton.”体育课总是男孩们打篮球,而女孩子只被允许打排球或者羽毛球;“My
parents
did
not
let
me
play
basketball
at
home.
‘Basketball
is
not
for
girls,’
they
said.”我的父母不让我在家里打篮球,他们说篮球并不是给女孩子打的。从老师的体育课安排和父母所说的话可推断出他们都持有篮球不适合女孩子的观点,综上应选B。
【15题详解】
词句猜测题。根据固定短语“make
it”所在的段落语境及句子“You
should
have
an
aim.
After
that,
just
be
confident
and
keep
going.
Never
give
up
and
you
will
make
it
sooner
or
later.”(你应该有一个目标,之后只要保持自信并坚持前行,从不放弃,迟早你就会make
it),可知此处是“我”在抒发自己的人生哲理感悟,有目标,有努力,不放弃,最终就会取得“成功”,综上本题应选A。

【分析】
这是一篇说明文。文章主要介绍了一项新的研究发现。中耳的三根小骨头在它们的爬行类祖先中是不存在的,但这种转变发生在什么时候仍不清楚。科学家们现在已经确定了一个新发现的物种遗骸的过渡阶段,并在此发现中证实了关于三根小骨头发生转变的假设性问题。
【36题详解】
考查介词和固定结构。句意:包括人类在内的现代哺乳动物,其敏锐的听觉要归功于中耳的三根小骨头,而这三根骨头在它们的爬行类祖先中是不存在的,但这种转变发生在什么时候仍不清楚。owe
sth
to
sth,固定结构,意为“把……归功于”。故填to。
【37题详解】
考查动词时态。句意:包括人类在内的现代哺乳动物,其敏锐的听觉要归功于中耳的三根小骨头,而这三根骨头在它们的爬行类祖先中是不存在的,但这种转变发生在什么时候仍不清楚。分析可知,“at
which
this
transformation
___2___(
occur)”应是之前名词the
point的定语从句,所填动词在从句中作谓语,结合句意可知应是应是一般过去时。故填occurred。
【38题详解】
考查副词。句意:科学家们现在已经确定了一个新发现的物种遗骸的过渡阶段,这个新发现的物种生活在1.25亿年前的中国东北地区,实际上是进化链条上缺失的一环。副词修饰动词discovered。故填newly。
【39题详解】
考查表语从句。句意:科学家们现在已经确定了一个新发现的物种遗骸的过渡阶段,这个新发现的物种生活在1.25亿年前的中国东北地区,实际上是进化链条上缺失的一环。分析可知,“___4___
is
now
northeastern
China”应是表语从句,从句中缺少主语,结合句意可知应是指代“物”,用连接代词what引导。故填what。
【40题详解】
考查名词。句意:他们的发现发表在周四的《科学》(Science)杂志上,被同行们视为古生物学领域的里程碑时刻。分析可知,their为形容词性物主代词,之后接名词,结合后文谓语“were”可知,应是名词复数。故填findings。
【41题详解】
考查语态。句意:他们的发现发表在周四的《科学》(Science)杂志上,被同行们视为古生物学领域的里程碑时刻。分析可知,所填动词的主语为之前名词“their
findings”,与所填动词之间为被动关系,应用be
done结构,结合前文已有were,因此只需填写过去分词即可。be
welcomed
as,固定结构,意为“被视为……”。故填welcomed。
【42题详解】
考查非谓语动词。句意:纽约美国自然历史博物馆的资深作者金·巴布解释说,这项研究是基于六只名为“Origolestes
lii”的动物个体的遗骸。分析可知,___7___(
name)
"
Origolestes
lii"应是之前名词animals的后置定语,与其之间为被动关系,应用过去分词形式。故填named。
【43题详解】
考查形容词比较级。句意:哺乳动物的听觉系统要比爬行动物复杂得多,爬行动物的颚部既能咀嚼又能传递外部声音。根据空前为系动词“is”以及空后的“than”为比较连词可知,应用形容词比较级形式。故填more
delicate。
【44题详解】
考查非谓语。句意:人们认为,所谓的听觉和咀嚼系统的分离消除了这两个过程相互施加在对方身上的物理限制,使哺乳动物既能使它们的饮食多样化,又能改善它们的听觉。分析可知,“__9___
(allow)
mammals
to
both
diversify
their
diet
and
improve
their
hearing”在句中作结果状语,所填动词allow与主语之间为主动关系,应用现在分词形式。故填allowing。
【45题详解】
考查定语从句。句意:“现在我们已经提供了在进化时期的化石证据来证实这个假设,”孟说。分析可知,“___10___
confirms
the
assumption”应是之前名词“the
fossil
evidence”的定语从句,先行词在从句中作主语,应用关系代词which/that引导。故填which/that。
【点睛】语法填空题技巧--形容词的级
①有提示词
②通常,有表示范围的in
/of介词短语或形容词前有the时,一般要用最高级;than的前面一定要用比较级
比如文章第8小题:
The
hearing
system
in
mammals
is
___8___
(delicate)
and
complex
than
that
in
reptiles,
who
use
their
jaws
to
both
chew
and
to
transmit
external
sound.
根据方法,空8后有提示词delicate,且为形容词,空前为系动词,应填形容词作表语;空后有比较连词than。因此答案为more
delicate。

第二节(满分25分)
47.
阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
The
day
before
my
daughter
Norah’s
fourth
birthday,
something
she
said
foreshadowed
a
remarkable
event.
I’d
just
picked
her
up
from
preschool
when
she
cautioned
me
not
to
mind
the
elderly
person
walking
across
the
parking
lot
at
a
glacier’s
pace.
She
went
on
to
explain
that
she
had
a
soft
spot
for
old
folks:
“I
like
old
people
best
because
they
walk
slowly
like
I
do
and
they
have
soft
skin
as
I
do.
They
are
all
gonna
die
soon,
so
I'm
gonna
love
them
before
they
die.”
I
was
struck
by
her
thoughtfulness
and
sympathy.
The
following
day

her
birthday

again
on
the
way
home
from
school,
she
asked
if
we
could
stop
at
the
grocery
store
to
buy
cupcakes
for
her
and
her
six
siblings
to
enjoy
after
dinner.
How
can
you
say
no
to
a
birthday
girl?
I
popped
Norah
and
her
younger
sister
into
one
of
those
car-shaped
grocery
carts
and
headed
toward
the
bakery.
After
we
picked
up
the
cupcakes,
I
stopped
at
a
shelf
that
caught
my
eye.
While
I
was
distracted,
Norah
was
busy
standing
up
in
the
cart,
excitedly
waving
and
gleefully
proclaiming,
“Hi,
old
person!
It’s
my
birthday
today!”
The
man
was
elderly,
with
his
weather-beaten
face.
However,
before
I
could
shush
her,
he
stopped
and
turned
to
her.
If
he
was
troubled
by
my
innocent
child,
he
would
show
it.
His
expression
was
softened
as
he
replied,
“Well,
hello,
little
lady!
And
how
old
are
you
today?”
They
chatted
for
a
few
minutes,
he
wished
her
a
happy
birthday,
and
we
went
our
separate
ways.
A
few
minutes
later,
she
turned
to
me
and
asked,
“Can
I
take
a
picture
with
the
old
man
for
my
birthday?”
It
was
the
cutest
thing
ever,
and
although
I
wasn’t
sure
if
he’d
be
willing
to,
I
told
her
we'd
certainly
ask.

1.
所续写短文的词数应为150词左右;

【答案】We

and
I
approached
him.
“Excuse

This

“A

he

“Yes,

And
he
agreed.
I
pulled
out
my

and
they
posed
together.
She
placed
her

of
his

He
wordlessly
stared
at
her
with
twinkling

as
she
kept
his

studied
his

arms
and
weather-beaten
hands.
I
asked
his

and
he
told
us
to
call
him
Dan.
After
a
few
minutes,
I
thanked
Mr.
Dan
for
spending
a
bit
of

Tears
in
his
eyes,
he
said
“No,

This

I’ve
had
for
a
long
time.”
He
turned
to
my
daughter.
“You’ve
made
me
so
happy,
Miss
Norah.”
They
hugged
tightly
and
they
were
chatting
like
long-lost
friends.
There
was
magic
happening
in
the
grocery
store
that
day
and
I’d
be
lying
to
you
if
I
said
I
wasn’t
weepy
at
that
moment.
I
was
sure
his
heart
was
touched
by
my
little
girl
and
that
he
would
never
forget
it.

阅读理解(共两节,满分40分)
第一节
(共15小题;每小题2分,满分30分)
阅读下列短文,从每题所给的四个选项(A、B、C和D)中,选出最佳选项,并在答题卡上将该项涂黑。
A
Around
45%
of
plastic
waste
is
recycled
annually
in
the
UK
and
is
on
the
increase.
However,
one
of
the
problems
with
present
plastic
recycling
methods
is
that
you
end
up
with
a
lower-quality
plastic
with
worse
properties
(特性)than
the
original.
This
means
that
plastic
drink
bottles
cannot
simply
be
recycled
into
new
drink
bottles
continuously,
but
instead
are
used
for
other
lower-grade
products
like
park
benches.
Now,
British
scientists
have
developed
a
new
method
of
chemical
recycling.
They
use
lower
temperatures
and
more
environmentally-friendly
starting
chemicals
than
previous
methods
to
turn
plastics
back
into
their
constituent
chemical
molecules
(分子).In
this
way,
they
can
be
used
to
make
new
plastics
of
the
same
quality
as
the
original.
"Most
plastic
is
now
recycled
using
mechanical
methods,
where
they
are
transformed
into
liquids
before
being
made
into
something
new,"
said
a
professor
named
Matthew
Jones.
"The
problem
is,
melting
plastic
changes
its
properties
and
reduces
the
quality.
Out
method
of
chemical
recycling
overcomes
this
problem.
Then
plastics
can
be
used
all
over
again
without
losing
any
properties?"
The
researchers
are
recycling
some
kinds
of
plastics,
including
plant-based
PLA,
a
plastic
used
for
food
packaging
and
PET,
which
is
used
for
drink
bottles.
So
far,
the
technology
has
only
been
demonstrated
on
a
small
range.
However,
scientists
are
now
working
to
produce
larger
quantities
of
starting
chemicals.
"There
is
no
single
solution
to
the
problem
of
plastic
waste

the
approach
has
to
be
a
combination
of
reducing,
reusing
and
recycling.
Our
method
of
chemical
recycling
could
allow
carbon
to
be
recycled
endlessly
rather
than
digging
more
up
from
the
ground
in
the
form
of
fossil
fuels,
or
letting
it
into
the
atmosphere
as
a
greenhouse
gas,"
said
Dr.
Paul
McKeown
from
the
University
of
Bath.
1.
What
is
the
problem
with
the
present
plastic
recycling?
A.
The
quality
of
recycled
plastics
declines.
B.
Plastic
drink
bottles
cannot
be
recycled.
C.
The
amount
of
plastic
waste
is
increasing.
D.
Recycled
lower-grade
products
sell
badly.
2.
How
do
scientists
recycle
plastic
waste
with
the
new
method?
A.
By
transforming
it
into
fuels.
B.
By
heating
it
into
liquid
state.
C.
By
keeping
its
original
properties.
D.
By
changing
its
molecule
structure
3.
What
can
we
learn
from
what
Dr.
Paul
McKeown
said?
A.
Fossil
fuels
are
endless
resources.
B.
The
plastic
waste
problem
has
no
solution.
C.
Recycled
carbon
leads
to
greenhouse
gases.
D.
The
chemical

Still
in
shock!
I
moved
around
the
house
purposelessly
trying
to
decide
what
to
put
into
the
suitcases(行李箱).
Earlier
that
evening,
I’d
received
a
call
telling
me
that
my
brother
was
killed
in
a
car
crash.
“Come
as
soon
as
you
can.”
cried
my
mother.
I
wanted
to
hurry
to
her
at
once.
But
my
husband,
Larry,
and
I
were
packing
to
move
from
New
York
to
Seattle.
Our
house
was
in
total
mess.
Supper
dishes
sat
on
the
kitchen
table.
Toys
lay
everywhere.
I
purposelessly
picked
things
up
and
put
them
down.
Mother’s
crying
went
through
my
head
again
and
again.
Larry
called
some
friends
to
tell
them
what
had
happened.
Someone
asked
to
speak
to
me.
“If
there’s
anything
I
can
do,
let
me
know.”
But
I
didn’t
know
what
to
ask
for.
Suddenly,
the
doorbell
rang.
It
was
Emerson.
He
and
his
wife
Donna
lived
in
the
block
nearby.
“I’ve
come
to
clean
your
shoes,”
he
said.
I
asked
him
to
repeat.
“Donna
had
to
stay
with
the
baby,”
he
said,
“but
we
want
to
help
you.
I
remember
when
my
father
died,
it
took
me
hours
to
clean
our
shoes
for
the
funeral(葬礼).
Give
me
all
your
shoes.”
I
gathered
all
our
dirty
shoes
to
the
kitchen.
Emerson
got
to
work
right
away.
Watching
him
devoting
himself
to
one
task
helped
me
pull
my
own
thoughts
into
order.
I
told
myself
to
wash
clothes
first.
Then,
Larry
and
I
bathed
the
children
and
put
them
to
bed.
One
job
after
another.
When
we
returned
to
clear
the
dishes,
Emerson
had
left.
All
our
shoes
stood
in
a
line
against
the
wall,
clean,
shining.
I
couldn't
help
crying.
Early
next
morning,
we
left
for
the
airport
with
all
the
jobs
done.
Now
whenever
I
hear
of
a
friend
who's
lost
a
loved
one,
I
no
longer
call
with
the
polite
offer,
“If
there’s
anything
I
can
do
…”
Instead
I
try
to
think
of
one
specific
task
that
suits
that
man's
need,
like
taking
the
dog
to
the
boarding
kennel,
or
house-sitting
during
the
funeral.
If
the
person
asks,
“How
did
you
know
I
needed
that
one?”
I
reply,
“Because
a
man
once
cleaned
my
shoes.”

many

were
still
related

it,

Recently
the
Obama
administration
is
considering
disabling
cell
phones
in
cars,
aiming
to
cut
down
cell-phone-related
road
deaths.
Transportation
Secretary
Ray
LaHood,
the
nation’s
anti-distracted-driving
supporter,
said
in
an
interview
on
November
18
that
federal
officials
are
looking
at
technology
to
disable
cell
phones
inside
cars.
“I
think
it
will
be
done,”
LaHood
said.
I
think
the
technology
is
there
and
I
think
you’re
going
to
see
the
technology
become
adaptable
in
automobiles
to
disable
these
cell
phones.
We
need
to
do
a
lot
more
if
we
were
going
to
save
lives.”
Also
on
Thursday,
the
transportation
government
started
a
new
“Faces

Distracted

video
campaign
that
features(以…为特征)
people
who
have
been
killed
or
lost
their

because
of
inattentive

The
video
features
heartbreaking
stories
of

killed
in
crashes
because
of
phoning
or
text
messaging,
and
new
videos
are
expected
to
be
added
every
few
weeks.
A
driver
is
four
times
more
likely
to
crash
while

a

More
than
5,500
people
were
killed
last
year
by
distracted
drivers,
and
another
500,000
were
injured.
LaHood
has
said
it
is
never
safe
to
talk
on
a
cell
phone
while
driving,
hands-free
or
not,
because
it
can
really
cause
distraction.
Incidentally,
a
lot
of
people
seem
to
agree
with
this
viewpoint—a
new
research
shows
nearly
two-thirds
of
Americans
support
a
national
ban
on
the
use
of
cell
phones
while
driving,
even
if
the
driver
is
using
a
hands-free
device(装置).
But
the
research
didn’t
ask
how
people
feel
about
government-issued
mobile
phone
scramblers
or
other
disabling
devices.

Every
time
I
passed
boys
who
were
playing
basketball,
I
stopped
silently
to
watch
them.
I
really
envied
them.
But
as
a
girl,
I
once
thought
that
I
could
never
play
basketball.
I
like
playing
basketball
though
I’m
not
good
at
it.
I’ve
had
a
basketball
since
I
was
a
child.
At
first,
I
could
play
freely
because
no
one
cared
when
I
was
just
a
kid.
But
as
I
grew
up
it
seemed
harder
and
harder
for
me
to
enjoy
basketball.
At
school,
it
was
always
the
boys
who
played
basketball
during
P.E.
classes.
The
girls
were
only
allowed
to
play
volleyball
or
badminton.
My
parents
did
not
let
me
play
basketball
at
home.
“Basketball
is
not
for
girls,”
they
said.
Even
when
I
went
to
play
basketball
with
my
friends,
boys
stared
at
me
on
the
court
as
if
I
were
an
alien.
I
was
feeling
down
and
had
hope
of
playing
basketball.
Unexpectedly,
something
changed
the
first
day
of
high
school.
I
made
some
friends
who
also
enjoyed
playing
basketball.
They
encouraged
me
to
get
back
on
the
court.
One
of
them
told
me
with
a
smile,
“Go
your
own
way,
let
others
talk.”
This
girl
would
always
play
basketball
with
me.
Even
the
boy
who
sat
next
to
me
in
class
talked
about
basketball
with
me
almost
every
day.
I
was
inspired
by
them.
Confidence
and
passion
(激情)
returned
to
my
heart.
I
am
ready
to
stand
up
and
play.
I
will
play
as
well
as
I
can,
and
for
me,
even
the
sky
is
boundless.
Basketball
has
become
an
important
part
of
my
life.
I
am
interested
in
it.
I
watch
and
play
almost
every
day.
Through
basketball,
not
only
do
I
feel
happy
and
confident,
but
also
learn
a
lot.
I
have
heard
the
NBA
star
Tracy
McGrady
say
“Nothing
is
impossible.”
It
is
from
an
advertisement
on
TV.
I
have
come
to
realize
that
life
is
just
like
playing
basketball.
You
should
have
an
aim.
After
that,
just
be
confident
and
keep
going.
Never
give
up
and
you
will
make
it
sooner
or
later.
I
love
the
motto
of
the
NBA.
It
can
express
my
strong
feelings
for
basketball,
“I
love
this
game!”

___16___
However,
as
a
neuroscientist,
I
know
the
problem
is
not
what
it
seems.
___17___
But
age
is
not
the
major
factor
so
commonly
assumed.
The
20

often
make
short

term
memory
errors
as
well.
They
walk
into
the
wrong
classroom.
They
forget
what
the
professor
said
two
minutes
ago.
On
the
other
hand,
some
aspects
of
memory
actually
get
better
as
we
age.
For
instance,
our
ability
to
extract
patterns,
regularities
(规律)and
to
make
accurate
predictions
improves
over
time.
___18___
If
you'

you
want
a
70

old
radiologist
reading
it,
not
a
30
-
year
-
old
one.
So
how
do
we
account
for
our
experience
that
older
adults
seem
to
have
difficulty
with
words
and
names?
___19___
As
long
as
given
a
little
more
time,
older
adults
perform
just
fine.
Second,
older
adults
have
to
search
through
more
memories
than
do
younger
adults
to
find
the
fact
or
piece
of
information
they're
looking
for.
Your
brain
becomes
crowded
with
memories
and
information.
It's
not
that
you
can't
remember.
Actually,
you
can!
___20___
So,
my
advice
is
experiencing
new
things.
It
is
the
best
way
to
keep
the
mind
young
and
growing

into
our
80s,
90s
and
beyond.
A.
That's
because
we've
had
more
experience.
B.
First,
there
is
a
widespread
cognitive
(认知的)slowing
with
age.
C.
This
is
widely
understood
to
be
a
classic
problem
of
aging.
D.
First
of
all,
senior
citizens
have
better
long
-
term
memories.
E.
It's
just
that
there
is
so
much
more
information
to
sort
through.
F.
Besides,
I
forget
names
that
I
used
to
be
able
to
think
of
effortlessly.

slightly
after

The
day
before
my
daughter
Norah’s
fourth
birthday,
something
she
said
foreshadowed
a
remarkable
event.
I’d
just
picked
her
up
from
preschool
when
she
cautioned
me
not
to
mind
the
elderly
person
walking
across
the
parking
lot
at
a
glacier’s
pace.
She
went
on
to
explain
that
she
had
a
soft
spot
for
old
folks:
“I
like
old
people
best
because
they
walk
slowly
like
I
do
and
they
have
soft
skin
as
I
do.
They
are
all
gonna
die
soon,
so
I'm
gonna
love
them
before
they
die.”
I
was
struck
by
her
thoughtfulness
and
sympathy.
The
following
day

her
birthday

again
on
the
way
home
from
school,
she
asked
if
we
could
stop
at
the
grocery
store
to
buy
cupcakes
for
her
and
her
six
siblings
to
enjoy
after
dinner.
How
can
you
say
no
to
a
birthday
girl?
I
popped
Norah
and
her
younger
sister
into
one
of
those
car-shaped
grocery
carts
and
headed
toward
the
bakery.
After
we
picked
up
the
cupcakes,
I
stopped
at
a
shelf
that
caught
my
eye.
While
I
was
distracted,
Norah
was
busy
standing
up
in
the
cart,
excitedly
waving
and
gleefully
proclaiming,
“Hi,
old
person!
It’s
my
birthday
today!”
The
man
was
elderly,
with
his
weather-beaten
face.
However,
before
I
could
shush
her,
he
stopped
and
turned
to
her.
If
he
was
troubled
by
my
innocent
child,
he
would
show
it.
His
expression
was
softened
as
he
replied,
“Well,
hello,
little
lady!
And
how
old
are
you
today?”
They
chatted
for
a
few
minutes,
he
wished
her
a
happy
birthday,
and
we
went
our
separate
ways.
A
few
minutes
later,
she
turned
to
me
and
asked,
“Can
I
take
a
picture
with
the
old
man
for
my
birthday?”
It
was
the
cutest
thing
ever,
and
although
I
wasn’t
sure
if
he’d
be
willing
to,
I
told
her
we'd
certainly
ask.
