The
latest
in
cat
research
reveals
that
the
lovelyanimal
seems
to
have
a
basic
grasp
on
both
the
lawsof
physics
and
the
ins
and
outs
of
cause
and
effect.
According
to
a
newly
published
study,
cats
seem
to
be
able
to
predict
the
location
of
hidingprey(猎物)using
both
their
ears
and
an
inborn(天生的)understanding
of
how
the
physicalworld
works
In
a
recent
experiment,
Japanese
researchers
taped
30
domestic
cats
reacting
to
a
containerthat
a
team
member
shook
Some
containers
rattled(发出响声);
others
did
not.
When
thecontainer
was
tipped
over,
sometimes
an
object
fell
out
and
sometimes
it
didn't.
It
turns
out
that
the
cats
were
remarkably
smart
about
what
would
happen
when
a
containerwas
tipped
over.
When
an
object
did
not
drop
out
of
the
bottom
of
a
rattling
container,
theylooked
at
it
for
a
longer
time
than
they
did
when
the
container
behaved
as
expected.
"Cats
use
a
causal-logical
understanding
of
noise
or
sounds
to
predict
the
appearance
ofinvisible
objects,"
lead
researcher
Saho
Takagi
says
in
a
press
release.
The
researchersconclude
that
cats'
hunting
style
may
have
developed
based
on
their
common-sense
abilitiesto
infer
where
prey
is,
using
their
hearing.
Scientists
have
explored
this
idea
with
other
endearing
creatures:
babies.
Like
cats,
babiesappear
to
engage
in
what's
called
"preferential
looking"—looking
longer
at
things
that
areinteresting
or
unusual
than
things
they
perceive
as
normal.
When
babies'
expectations
are
violated
in
experiments
like
the
ones
performed
with
the
cats,
they
react
much
like
their
animal
friends.
Psychologists
have
shown
that
babies
apparentlyexpect
their
world
to
comply
with
the
laws
of
physics
and
cause
and
effect
as
early
as
twomonths
of
age.
Does
the
study
mean
that
cats
will
soon
grasp
the
ins
and
outs
of
cause
and
effect?
Maybe,
Okay,
so
cats
may
not
be
the
next
physics
faculty
members
at
America's
most
importantresearch
universities.
But
by
demonstrating
their
common
sense,
they've
shown
that
the
dividebetween
cats
and
humans
may
not
be
that
great
after
all.
24.
What
do
we
learn
from
a
newly
published
study
about
cats?
A)
They
can
be
trained
to
understand
the
physical
world.
B)
They
know
what
kind
of
prey
might
be
easier
to
hunt.
C)
They
have
a
natural
ability
to
locate
animals
they
hunt.
D)
They
are
capable
of
telling
which
way
their
prey
flees.
25.
What
may
account
for
the
cats'
response
to
the
noise
from
the
containers?
A)
Their
inborn
sensitivity
to
noise.
C)
Their
special
ability
to
perceive.
B)
Their
unusual
sense
of
direction.
D)
Their
mastery
of
cause
and
effect.
26
In
what
way
do
babies
behave
like
cats?
A)
They
focus
on
what
appears
odd.
C)
They
do
what
they
prefer
to
do
B)
They
view
the
world
as
normal.
D)
They
are
curious
about
everything.
27.What
can
we
conclude
about
cats
from
the
passage?
A)
They
have
higher
intelligence
than
many
other
animals.
B)
They
interact
with
the
physical
world
much
like
humans.
C)
They
display
extraordinarily
high
intelligence
in
hunting.
D)
They
can

What's

Sure,
the

Jaws
is
terrifying
-
but
you're
way
more

by
the

That's
according
to
a

in

The

data
in
the
United

from
2008
to
2015
and
compared
the
number
of
deaths
caused
by
animals
to
a
2012
study
that
looked
at
the
same
elements
in
prior
years.
In
this
new
study,
researchers
found
a
total
of
1,610
animal-related
deaths
in
the
U.S.,
including
deaths
as
a
result
of
bites,
contact,
attack,
or
envenomation
(venom

The
majority
of
those
deaths
were
related
to
nonvenomous
animals,
coming
out
to
about
2.8
deaths
per
million
people.
Surprisingly,
most
of
the
fatalities
they
found
weren't
related
to
wild
animal
attacks:
The
largest
proportion
of
animal
deaths
were
caused
by
large
mammals,
especially
horses
and
cattle.
According
to
a
press
release,
other
studies
have
found
that
most
of
these
deaths
occur
on
the
farm,
and
accidents
with
horses
and
cattle
account
for
a
whopping
90
percent
of
farm
accidents.
The
next
largest
group
of
animal-related
fatalities
were
caused
by
a
group
called
Hymenoptera,
or
hornets,
wasps,
and
bees,
accounting
for
just
under
30
percent
of
the
reported
fatalities.
According
to
the
press
release,
"Africanized"
honeybees,
which
are
found
most
often
in
the
southern
and
western
U.S.,
can
be

lethal
when
they

dog-related
fatalities
occurred
at
a
rate
of
about
4.6
deaths
per
10
million
people.
The
study
showed
that
young
children
are
most
vulnerable:
The
rate
of
children
under
age
four
killed
by
dogs
was
twice
as
high
as
the
next
most
vulnerable
age
group,
people
older
than
65,
and
four
times
as
high
as
other
age
groups.
"The

told

about

"I

that
people
in
the
South
experienced
about
47
percent
of
all
animal-related
attacks
in
the
U.S.,Dr.
Christopher
Holstege,
one
of
the
authors,
told
CNN.
In
addition,
infants
and
young
children
up
to
four
years
of
age
are
most
vulnerable,
he
said
-
especially
when
it
comes
to
dog
bites.
Researchers
recommend
more
public
health
initiatives
and
awareness
to
help
prevent
farm
fatalities.
As
for
bees
and
hornets,
it
helps
to
be
aware
of
your
allergies,
carry
an
EpiPen,
and
try
to
avoid
provoking
bees.
As
far
as
dogs
go,
your
best
bet
is
to
not
leave
them
alone
with
the
very
young
or
the
very
old.
But
still,
there
isn't
too
much
reason
to
worry.
"In
many
ways,
the
data
is
pretty
reassuring,"
Forrester
told
CNN.
"The
most
common
cause
of
death
are
not
the
scariest
things,
necessarily,
but
they
are
the
most
common
interactions
we
have
with
farm
animals
and
they
are
preventable."

概要写作.阅读下面短文,根据其内容写一篇60词左右的内容概要.
With
global
warming
and
melting
ice
it
isn't
easy
being
a
polar
bear
anymore.Some
studies
have
predicted
that
polar
bears
could
die
out
by
the
end
of
the
century.The
good
news
is
not
all
researchers
think
the
bears
are
absolutely
disappearing.Scientists
at
the
American
Museum
of
Natural
History(AMNH)
have
published
a
new
paper
indicating
that
things
might
not
be
as
bad
for
polar
bears
as
some
scientists
expect.
To
understand
the
reason
for
the
researchers'cautious
optimism,we
must
first
understand
the
factors
that
are
threatening
the
polar
bear's
existence.Polar
bears
consume
a
diet
of
mainly
young
seals.In
order
to
hunt
these
seals,polar
bears
need
to
rest
at
the
top
of
sea
ice---the
same
ice
that
is
increasingly
melting
for
most
of
the
year
thanks
to
climate
change.In
another
50years,experts
expect
that
the
Arctic
will
be
too
warm
for
sea
ice
to
form
for
half
of
the
year,leaving
polar
bears
without
a
reliable
food
source
and
in
serious
danger
of
starvation.
As
it
turns
out
alternative
food
sources
for
the
polar
bears
aren't
completely
out
of
the
question.For
as
long
as
biologists
have
tailed
after
the
animals
they've
seen
polar
bears
eating
animals
found
on
land
like
caribou(驯鹿)
and
snow
geese---as
well
as
the
snow
geese's
eggs.
Can
polar
bears
actually
survive
off
these
alternative
food
sources
for
long
periods
of
time?To
figure
this
out,researchers
calculated
the
nutrients
that
a
caribou
and
snow
geese
diet
would
provide.They
found
that
even
adult
male
polar
bears
would
be
able
to
obtain
more
calories
than
they
would
burn
in
hunting
these
meals.Moreover,the
food
would
provide
the
food
necessary
to
avoid
starvation
during
the
summer
months.
Unfortunately,not
all
polar
bears
have
tended
to
seek
food
on
land.That
said,the
researchers
expect
that
necessity
would
push
more
polar
bears
to
hunt
on
land
to
avoid
starvation.They
also
expect
that
the
bears
could
learn
from
their
fellow
bears
how
to
hunt
on
land
until
the
practice
becomes
second
nature.
