The
San
Francisco
Giants
added
a
special
pitcher
for
the
day.
It
was
small—yet
fierce—Hailey
Dawson,
who
has
a
3D?printed
hand.
The
energetic
8?year?old
from
Nevada
was
invited
to
throw
out
the
first
pitch
at
the
Giants
game
on
Sunday.
Dawson
was
born
with
Poland
syndrome,
a
disorder
in
which
affected
individuals
are
born
with
missing
or
underdeveloped
muscles
on
one
side
of
the
body.
It
affected
her
hand.
With
a
traditional
prosthesis
potentially
costing
thousands
of
dollars,
Hailey's
mom,
Yong
Dawson
turned
to
the
University
of
Nevada,
Las
Vegas
for
help.
She
emailed
UNLV
engineering,
and
they
accepted
the
challenge.
Brendan
O'Toole,
the
chairman
of
the
mechanical
engineering
department,
said
he
and
his
team
had
got
a
lot
of
requests,
“but
this
one
is
different.”
They
got
to
work
using
a
3D
?printer.
Several
prototypes
and
fittings
later,
Dawson
got
her
first
hand
about
four
years
ago.
Hailey's
mother
said
the
hand
had
given
her
daughter
a
wonderful
lift.
“When
she
puts
this
robotic
hand
on,
it
changes
her
personality
and
gains
her
self?belief,”
Yong
Dawson
told
CBS
San
Francisco.
“I
love
seeing
that.
I
just
want
her
to
have
an
even
playing
field.”
When
she
arrived
at
AT&T
Park
on
Sunday,
Hailey
got
to
hang
out
with
players
in
the
shelter
at
the
side
of
the
sports
field.
They
even
let
her
try
on
their
World
Series
rings.
Using
her
3D?printed
hand,
Dawson
threw
out
the
first
perfect
pitch.
Then
with
a
wave
and
a
smile,
she
headed
into
the
stand
to
cheer
on
her
newfound
friends
on
the
Giants.

this.
__1__
For
one
thing,
with

there
are
now
many
more

What's
more,
there

some
of
the
population.
__3__
However,
there
will
be
some
disadvantages
if
so
many

Considering
football
again,
many
small
clubs
have
suffered
financial
losses
recently,
as
they
cannot
compete
with
the
large
ones.
__4__
Fewer
people
watch
live
matches
nowadays,
preferring
to
watch
in
the
comfort
of
their
living
room.
And
ticket
prices
have
risen

In
a
word,
watching
live

effects.
Televised
sport
has

certain
people

very
much.
__5__
A.Why
has
there
been
such
growth
in
televised
sport?
B.Why
are
there

Have

of
those
days
when
all
you
wanted
to
do
was
read
an
emotionally
powerful
story
that
would

you
to
tears?
Most
of
us
tend
to
be
attracted
by
stories
that
reach
us
on
multiple
levels,
including
sadness.
There
are
plenty
of
books
that
make
you
cry
(and
sometimes
laugh)
and
that
you
can
really
sink
your
teeth
into.
Here
are
four
of
them.
1.The
Kite
Runner
This
realistic
and
moving
description
of
life
in
Afghanistan
accounts
for
the
people
who
were
badly
affected
by
the
Taliban.
You'll
cry
as
you

the
familial

and
cruelty
involved,
but
you'll
also
get
a
sense
of
hope
as
you
quickly
read
through
this
appealing
novel.
2.The
Book
Thief
Let's
put
it
this
way:
Death
itself
is
the
narrator.
The
story
is
about
a
young
girl
named
Liesel
who
has
to
live
with
foster
parents
during
World
War
Ⅱ.
On
the
way
to
her
new
home,her
brother
dies,
setting
the
gloomy
tone
for
the
story.
There
is
hope,
however,
when
Liesel
discovers
her
love
for
reading
and
makes
a
relationship
with
a
young
Jewish
man
she
helps
hide
from
the
Nazis.
3.The
Fault
in
Our
Stars
This
is
probably
the
most
likely
book
on
the
list
to
make
you
cry,
as
it
records
the
experiences
of
teens
who
are
dying
from
cancer
and
living
their
last
days
in
love.
Their
lifestyle
is
tragic
and
disturbing
at
the
same
time,
as
we
watch
their
health
worsen.
The
real
tragedy
is
the
love
story
between
the
main
characters,
who
know
that
their
romance
is
fruitless.
4.A
Child
Called
“It”
Easily
one
of
the
saddest
stories
of
abuse
in
recent
decades,
A
Child
Called
“It”
is
based
on
the
true
story
of
Dave
Pelzer,
a
boy
from
California
who
suffered
at
the
hands
of
his
cruel
family.
The
tears
will
come
from
both
sadness
and
the
inspiration
tied
to
Dave's
fight
for
survival
in
an
environment
where
he
is
believed
worthless.
1.What
do
the
four
books
have
in
common?
A.They
are
all
about
cruel
wars.
B.They
are
all
about
suffering
children.
C.They
all
probably
make
you
cry.
D.They
are
all
adapted
from
true
stories.
2.Which
book
is
about
a
young
victim
whose
family
treated
him
cruelly?
A.The
Kite
Runner.
B.The
Book
Thief.
C.The
Fault
in
Our
Stars.
D.A
Child
Called
“It”.
3.The
passage
is
intended
to
________.
A.inspire
us
to
read
more
B.introduce
some
moving
books
C.explain
why
we
love
reading
D.advise
us
to
buy
some
books
B
It's
at
this
time
of
the
year
that
marathon
recovery,
not
marathon
training,
starts
to
take
center
stage.
Research
indicates
that
the
muscle
damage
from
running
a
marathon
can
last
up
to
two
weeks.
The
research
also
indicates
that
muscle
soreness
(肌肉酸痛)
is
not
a
good
indicator
of
muscular
healing.
In
other
words,
just
because
you
aren't
sore
anymore
doesn't
mean
that
you
are
fully
healed.
This
is
the
danger
for
marathon
runners:
post?marathon
muscular
soreness
fades
after
a
few
days
but
minor
damage
within
the
muscle
cells
remains.
If
you
return
to
full
training
too
soon—running
more
and
faster
than
the
tissues
are
ready
for—you
risk
delaying
full
recovery
and
the
chance
to
get
ready
for
your
next
goal.
The
solution,
it
appears,
is
to
recognize
(and
accept)
that
the
muscles
will
take
a
while
to
heal
and
to
be
prepared
to
take
it
easy
for
the
first
couple
of
weeks
(even
longer
if
you're
particularly
sore
after
your
marathon).
While
the
research
isn't
very
promising
when
it
comes
to
things
to
do
to
reduce
soreness
and
aid
healing,
a
couple
of
concepts
appear
to
help.
First,
providing
gentle
blood
flow
to
the
area
helps
bring
healing
nutrients
into
the
muscles
and
also
helps
to
remove
waste
products
and
damaged
tissue.
Walking
and
gentle
massage
(按摩)
can
help,
particularly
in
the
first
few
days
after
a
marathon.
Once
muscle
soreness
has
significantly
reduced
(usually
two
to
four
days
after
the
race),
light
jogging
can
commence.
Just
be
mindful
to
run
very
slowly.
No
runner
wants
to
get
super
fit
and
then
lose
that
during
the
recovery
process.
But
since
you
must
reduce
your
training
load
following
your
marathon,
it
can
be
difficult
as
to
how
much
and
how
soon
to
insert
running
into
your
post?marathon
training.
4.When
should
marathon
runners
return
to
full
training?
A.About
half
a
month
after
the
competition.
B.A
few
days
after
soreness
disappears.
C.Before
the
tissues
recover
completely.
D.Before
the
next
game
draws
closer.
5.How
can
marathon
runners
reduce
their
muscle
soreness?
A.Through
family
care.

small,

their

Some
language
experts
believe
that
10,000
years
ago,
when
the
world
had
just
five
to
ten
million
people,
they
spoke
perhaps
12,000
languages
between
them.
Soon
afterwards,
many
of
those
people
started
settling
down
to
become
farmers,
and
their
languages
too
became
more
settled
and
fewer
in
number.
In
recent
centuries,
trade,
industrialisation,
the
development
of
the

and
the
spread
of
universal
compulsory

especially
globalization
and
better
communications
in
the
past
few
decades,
all
have
caused
many
languages
to
disappear,
and
dominant

such
as
English,
Spanish
and
Chinese
are
increasingly
taking
over.
At
present,
the
world
has
about
6,800
languages.
The
distribution
of
these

is
hugely
uneven.
The
general
rule
is
that
mild
zones
have
relatively
few
languages,
often
spoken
by
many
people,
while
hot,
wet
zones
have
lots,
often
spoken
by
small
numbers.
Europe
has
only
around
200
languages;
the
Americas
about
1,000;
Africa
2,400;
and
Asia
and
the
Pacific
perhaps
3,200,
of
which
Papua
New

alone
accounts
for
well
over
800.
The
median
number
(中位数)
of

is
a
mere
6,000,
which
means
that
half
the
world's
languages
are
spoken
by
fewer
people
than
that.
Already
well
over
400
of
the

of

Ⅰ.阅读理解
A
John,
a
very
thin
boy,
loved
football
with
all
his
heart
when
he
was
very
young.
Practice
after
practice,
he
eagerly
gave
everything
he
had.
But
being
half
the
size
of
the
other
boys,
he
could
only
sit
on
the
bench
and
hardly
ever
played
in
games.
Even
though
the
son
was
always
on
the
bench,
his
father
was
always
standing
with
cheers
and
encouraging
him.
When
John
went
to
college,
he
decided
to
try
out
for
the
football
team
as
a
“walk?on”.
Everyone
was
sure
he
could
never
make_the_cut,_but
he
did.
The
coach
thought
he
could
provide
the
other
members
with
the
spirit
they
needed.
The
news
that
he
had
survived
the
selection
excited
him
so
much
that
he
rushed
to
the
nearest
phone
and
called
his
father.
His
father
shared
his
excitement
and
was
sent
season
tickets
for
all
the
college
games.
It
was
the
end
of
the
last
football
season.
One
day
John
received
a
telegram
and
asked
one
week
off.
Nobody
knew
what
happened
except
the
coach.
The
coach
said,
“Don't
plan
to
come
back
to
the
game
on
Saturday.”
Saturday
arrived,
and
the
game
was
not
going
well.
When
the
team
was
ten
points
behind,
John
came
back.
“Coach,
please
let
me
play.
I've
just
got
to
play
today,”
said
John.
The
coach
pretended
not
to
hear
him.
But
John
persisted,
and
finally
feeling
sorry
for
the
kid,
the
coach
gave
in.
Before
long,
everyone
could
not
believe
their
eyes.
John
was
doing
everything
to
fight.
The
opponent
could
not
stop
him.
He
ran,
he
passed
and
blocked
like
a
star.
And
at
last
his
team
won
the
game.
After
the
game,
John
looked
at
the
coach,
with
tears
in
his
eyes,
and
said,“Well,
you
knew
my
dad
died,
but
did
you
know
that
my
dad
was
blind?”
John
swallowed
hard
and
forced
a
smile,
“Dad
came
to
all
my
games,
but
today
was
the
first
time
he
could
see
me
play,
and
I
wanted
to
show
him
that
I
could
do
it.”

“I
Went
Skydiving
at
84!”
As
a
young
girl
growing
up
in
the
1930s,
I
always
wanted
to
fly
a
plane,
but
back
then
it
was
almost
unheard
of
a
woman
to
do
that.
I
got
a
taste
of
that
dream
in
2001,
when
my
husband
arranged
for
me
to
ride
in
a
hot
air
balloon
for
my
birthday.
But
the
experience
turned
out
to
be
very
dull.
Around
that
time,
I
told
my
husband
that
I
wanted
to
skydive.
So
when
our
retirement
community
announced
that
they
were
having
an
essay
competition
and
the
topic
was
an
experience
of
a
lifetime
that
you
wanted
to
have,
I
decided
to
write
about
my
dream.
In
the
essay,
I
wrote
about
my
desire
to
skydive,
stating
that
George
Bush
Sr.
did
it
at
age
80.
Why
not
me?
I
was
just
84
and
in
pretty
good
health.
A
year
went
by
and
I
heard
nothing.
But
then
at
a
community
party
in
late
April
2009,
they
announced
that
I
was
one
of
the
winners.
I
just
couldn't
believe
it.
Inspired
by
this,
I
decided
to
realize
my
dream,
even
though
some
of
my
family
members
and
my
doctor
were
against
it.
On
June
11,
2009,
nearly
40
of
my
family
and
friends
gathered
in
the
area
close
to
where
I
would
land
while
I
headed
up
in
the
airplane.
My
instructor,
Jay,
guided
me
through
the
experience.
The
plane
was
the
noisiest
one
I
had
ever
been
in,
but
I
wasn't
frightened—I
was
really
just
looking
forward
to
the
experience.
When
we
reached
13,000
feet,
Jay
instructed
me
to
throw
myself
out
of
the
plane.
When
we
first
hit
the
air,
the
wind
was
so
strong
that
I
could
hardly
breathe.
For
a
second
I
thought,
“What
have
I
gotten
myself
into?”
But
then
everything
got
calmer.
We
were
in
a
free
fall
for
about
a
minute
before
Jay
opened
the
parachute
(降落伞),
and
then
we
just
floated
downward
for
about
five
minutes.
Being
up
in
the
clouds
and
looking
at
the
view
below
was
unlike
anything
I
have
ever
felt—much
better
than
the
hot
air
balloon.
I
was
just
enjoying
it.
Skydiving
was
really
one
of
the
greatest
experiences
of
my
life.
I
hope
other
people
will
look
at
me
and
realize
that
you
don't
stop
living
just
because
you
are
84
years
old.
If
there's
something
you
want
to
experience,
look
into
it.
If
it's
something
that
is
possible,
make
it
happen.

Ⅰ.阅读理解
A
【语篇解读】 本文是一篇记叙文,主要叙述了尽管约翰只是一名板凳球员,但父亲一直在鼓励着他。上大学之后,约翰积极努力争取成了一名临时球员,这让每个人都很吃惊。足球赛季末,他收到了家里的电报,父亲去世了。但是比赛当天约翰返回了球场,最终他帮助球队力挽狂澜,获得了胜利,同时向去世的父亲证明自己能行。
1.答案与解析:D 细节理解题。由第一段中的But
being
half
the
size
of
the
other
boys,
he
could
only
sit
on
the
bench
and
hardly
ever
played
in
games.可知,由于他的体形几乎是其他男孩的一半大小,所以他只能成为板凳球员,很少参加比赛,所以约翰几乎没有机会参加比赛的原因是他的身体条件不好。故D选项正确。
2.答案与解析:B 词义猜测题。由第二段中的“When
John
went
to
college,
he
decided
to
try
out
for
the
football
team
as
a‘walk?on’”.可知,当约翰上大学时,他决定参加足球队的选拔赛,成为一名临时球员。所以判断出第二段中带下划线的短语“make
the
cut”可替换为be
allowed
to
join
the
team。故B选项正确。
3.答案与解析:C 推理判断题。由最后一段中的“Well,
you
knew
my
dad
died,
but
did
you
know
that
my
dad
was
blind?”...“Dad
came
to
all
my
games,
but
today
was
the
first
time
he
could
see
me
play...”可知,约翰的父亲去世了,他的父亲是个盲人,生前参加了他所有的比赛,今天是他第一次“看到”约翰上场踢足球赛,他想让父亲知道他能行。故C选项正确。
4.答案与解析:D 主旨大意题。通读全文可知,本文讲述了尽管约翰受到身体条件的限制,只是一名板凳球员,但是父亲一直在鼓励着他,上大学之后,他努力争取成了一名临时球员。足球赛季末,家里的电报告诉他父亲去世了。但是比赛当天约翰求教练能给予他上场的机会,教练最终同意了。他帮助球队力挽狂澜,获得了胜利,同时向死去的父亲证明自己能行,所以这个故事告诉我们“有志者,事竟成”的道理,同时也是短文的主旨大意。故D选项正确。
