The British have many in their history
the young could look up to and learn from.
Shakespeare and Darwin surely have a lot
to teach everyone, let alone children.
Yet according to the research by the Children’s Society in the UK, British youngsters are more impressed by footballers and pop stars than achievers in the arts and sciences. But just what is wrong with celebrities like David Beckham and Cheryl Cole
The problem is that the young simply
copy stars like Beckham. If the star gets
a tattoo(文身), the young person will
want to get a tattoo; if the star gets a
strange new haircut, the youngster will be clamoring(强烈要求) for the same style.
It’s not just the famous writers and scientists that do not inspire the UK’s youngsters. They look past their own parents, too.
Just one in seven UK children admire their fathers; three in 10 admire their mothers.
Significantly, young British people interviewed for the research had the least time for Homer Simpson, the couch potato(老泡在电视机前的人) father of Bart and Lisa.
Some will argue though, that it is the parents’ fault for not providing good role models(榜样). Rashid Iqbal, head of the Children’s Society tends to agree. “If children are not looking up to adults, this is not the children’s fault, ” he said. “Adults have a responsibility to make childhood better for all children. ”
56. “ They look past their own parents, too. ” means ______ .

C. Kids in Britain spend the least time with Homer Simpson.
D. Some argue that British parents haven’t provided good role models for youngsters.
【解析】选D。细节理解题。注意理解句子在文中表达的真正含义。D项可以从文章最后一段找到答案。
58. What is the main idea of the article
A. The British have many in their history the young could look up to and learn from.
B. British youngsters look up to footballers and pop stars as their role models.
C. British youngsters look past their own parents.
D. Adults have a collective responsibility to make childhood better for all children.
【解析】选B。本文揭示了现代英国的一种社会现象:足球运动员和流行明星成了孩子们的榜样。文章第一段提到 “The British have many in their history the young could look up to and learn from. ”但紧接着在第二段用 “Yet” 转入主题: . . . British youngsters are more impressed by footballers and pop stars than achievers in the arts and sciences. 第三段、第四段进一步说明主旨: “The problem is that the young simply copy stars like Beckham. ” “It’s not just the famous writers and scientists that do not inspire the UK’s youngsters. They look past their own parents, too. ”文章最后一段用: “. . . it is the parents’ fault for not providing good role models. . . ” 提醒成年人对这一现象进行反思,但该段不是文章的主体。

Hey there,
So you’re about to spend four years of your life and tens of thousands of dollars of your parents’ money, and all you really know about college is that all of your friends are going. Do you ever stop to wonder why you’re going
Relax. You’re making the right decision. First of all, you’ll discover what interests you by taking courses in many subjects. For example, it’s hard to decide if you want to be a painter but you’ve never painted any picture; once you’re in a
drawing-room on campus, you’ll know one way or the other. College is also a lot of fun — after you graduate, you’ll be working every weekday for 50 or so years. And remember that college graduates earn about twice the income of those who never attended college.
Finding the right college can be difficult. Fortunately, Johnson Review is here to help you every step of the way.
*Researching Schools. To us, the most important decision you’ll make is to choose the school that really fits you best—not the one that is the most competitive (有竞争力的) or has the best-equipped rooms.
*Applying to School. On , you’ll find hundreds of actual college applications(申请)and links to many more .
*Raising Your Scores. American College Test is one of the most difficult parts of the admissions course. It’s not the most important, though, and not everyone needs to prepare for the test. But, if you think you can do better, find the right course for better scores.
*Paying for School. Most families need financial aid for the high cost of college. The problem is that financial aid seems difficult to get and many families are caught up in the price of college rather than learning the ways to get financial aid. If you really do your research, you’ll learn that you can afford to attend any college, no matter the cost. For more information, call 600—3681 or visit .

Shen Xue beamed as she held the big
shiny medal and her husband Zhao
Hongbo planted a kiss on her forehead.
On February 14, the Chinese pair broke their own world record with a beautiful performance to open the pairs competition at the Winter Olympics in Vancouver, Canada. They won the Olympic gold medal, a prize they had sought for nearly two decades, a prize they so wanted that it lured(引诱) them away from the comfortable retired life of a married couple.
It wasn’t the best skate of their career, but it was good enough for gold—and that was all that mattered.
“We’ve been in competitions for many years, and won other medals, ” Zhao said. “But every time we heard the national anthem and saw our flag being raised, we wished it was the Olympic Games. Today we’ve achieved our goal. ”
It was the first time since 1960 that a Russian or Soviet couple hadn’t taken the medal, ending one of the longest winning streaks(连续获胜) in sport.
Shen and Zhao, bronze(铜牌) medalists at the last two Olympic Games, retired after winning their third title in 2007.
They got married, and lived the easy life of retirees, doing shows and appearances. But something was missing—that gold medal.
They returned this season. Despite being 31 and 36, they have dominated(主导) everywhere they have competed.
This was not different.
The couple performed with the passion(激情) that has become their trademark(标志). The interpretation(诠释) of Adagio in G Minor (《G小调柔板》) was moving, with their skating perfectly in tune with the music. Shen was so expressive;the audience could practically feel her every emotion.
Their throw jumps were huge and flawless(无瑕疵的), the kind of tricks that would dazzle (使……眩晕) even the X-Games generation.
Shen and Zhao did make one mistake, and it was a shocker (令人震惊的事). She slipped down his back during one of their lifts. But they recovered immediately, and finished the program with a beautiful carry lift while they circled half the ice. The audience were on its feet before their music even finished, knowing it had witnessed history.
When the marks flashed, they shared a long embrace: husband and wife, now Olympic champions.

Dear Zhang Hua,
Long time no see! I miss you very much. Now I am so excited that I can not wait to share with you an unforgettable experience. I gave my first lesson today, which left me a deep impression.
Seeing a young teacher enter the classroom, my students began to make more noise, I stood on the platform, feeling embarrassed and not knowing what to do. Then I realized something must be done. I asked the kids whether they liked
English songs. After taking a deep breath, I sang a song I had practiced many times. To my surprise, all the kids were concentrating on my class later on.
How delighted I am now! Actually, whatever happens, we must stay calm first and then find a wise solution. Looking forward to your reply.
Yours,
Li Hong
