Cowboys, Policemen, Princesses and Superheroes are all characters kids choose to be on any given day. Putting on a play can be a fun activity that lets them act out their favorite characters as well as use their artistic ( 艺 术 的 ) ability to create the stage.
Best of all, they will be able to use their favorite line (台词) “look at me” as the audience sits down to enjoy the production.
Help your kids decide on a play they would like to act out. Use the Internet or library to find scripts (剧本)
for older reading kids. For younger kids, you can act out a favorite story or fairy tale. Of course, you could always help them write their own script.
Decide how many characters are needed. Invite neighbors and friends to be in your play or let your kids play more than one character. Make sure you teach them to change the way they look, move and speak so the audience can tell the difference.
Search for costume and prop (工具) supplies. Find clothes from your closet or attic (阁楼), or go to a garage
sale. Help everyone make a mask or put on makeup to represent their character.
Get creative. Make tickets, invitations, movie posters and props for your kids’ play. You can even decorate a curtain and hang in front of the stage. Set up chairs for the audience.
Invite the audience to sit down and enjoy the play.

An NPC deputy (人大代表) during this year’s two sessions suggested dividing the winter and summer vacations into four shorter vacations. Though it seems helpful, the proposal is out of the realities.
Firstly, the deputy believed that shorter vacations could alleviate ( 缓 解 ) parents’ burden of caring for their children at home and offer families more opportunities to travel together. However, the general consensus (共识) is that most parents are often so busy trying to make enough money to provide for their children’s education and
household costs that they don’t even have enough time to keep their kids company, let alone to be able to take their kids on vacation.
Secondly, each of the breaks will only last for about three weeks. Even though this is generally a long enough time for students to go to tutoring centers (培训机构) if their parents pay extra attention to their children’s studies, they may end up finding themselves continuously having to shift between a busy school term and a more relaxed
period of time off. While this may help to prevent children from playing with their mobile phones or video games, is it really necessary to create new term system (体系) to do so? As the saying goes, “Penny wise and pound foolish.” Moreover, as some netizens have mentioned, the main purpose of winter and summer vacations is to give
students more time to celebrate the Spring Festival and to escape the summer heat. Not only do longer vacations spare many students the efforts of travelling from home to school, but they also offer chances for them to do things with long-lasting positive effects, such as volunteering in the community or joining in overseas exchanges.
In a word, there is still a long way to go to improve the vacation system before a better option turns up. So what we students need to do for now is just make the best of our vacation time and prepare ourselves for the future terms.
Why did the deputy make the new proposal?
To pay more attention to children’s learning
To encourage children to relax themselves
To increase parents-children caring and love
To greatly reduce children’s learning burden
If kids have shorter vacations, they may .
have more time to learn their school subjects
Find their study and rest both poorly affected
feel more relaxed and will do better in new terms
not be interested in phones or computer games
Which “spare” of the following sentences shares the same meaning with the underlined “spare” (para 4)?
I tried to spare Tom the trouble of coming late for school.
Whenever our guests come, we have some free rooms to spare.
I have decided that I will spare no effort to improve my English.
2 / 9
D. It’s good and wonderful of you to spare time to come to see me.
7. The author thinks the proposal is .
A. valuable
B. charming
C. unpractical
D. challenging

Birds have nostrils on their beaks ( 喙 ) that can help them smell all kinds of things. When animals breathe air, they can also breathe in different smells.
The nose can pick up on smells and send information to the brain by the olfactory system. We have an olfactory system, too. This system can help animals understand the world through a sense of smell.
Maybe you’ve used your olfactory system to smell your breakfast, lunch, and dinner or you’re your new school books.
Birds can also use their olfactory systems to sniff out food. The kiwi bird uses its long beak to dig into the dirt.
Its nostrils are on the outside and very tip of its beak. It’s thought that they use that sense of smell to pick up chemicals
(化学物质) emitted by their food—grubs, worms, and other things that are in the ground.
One bird of prey that has a really great sense of smell are turkey vultures. Vultures are scavengers, meaning they
eat dead animals. They have a fantastic sense of smell. They use their nose to pick up chemicals from things that are decaying (腐烂). Turkey vultures have one of the strongest senses of smells among birds. They have been known to smell food that was over a mile away.
But albatrosses, which can have wingspans around ten feet, have been known to sniff out food from even greater distances-about 12 miles away. These seabirds can pick up chemicals from dead fish or groups of fish. They can even sense the smell that krill give off when they are eaten by fish. That helps them find the fish via the krill.
While a sense of smell is helpful for birds, it isn’t the only useful or even sometimes the strongest sense—they
also use their senses of hearing, sight, and taste. The next time you watch your chickens, or other birds in the neighborhood, maybe you can observe how they use all these senses.
The first three paragraphs try to tell us .
animals can send information by smelling
birds use their beaks to get to know the world
we are fond of smelling things that interest us
the sense of smell is very important to animals
Which of the following are big birds with a stronger sense of smell?
A. Kiwi birds
B. Turkey vultures
C. Albatrosses
D. Krill
It can be learned that .
birds have the strongest sense of smell among animals
kiwi birds’ nostrils are on the lower end of the beaks
the sense of smell of birds is their smartest sense
3 / 9
D. birds understand the world through various senses
11. Who are the target readers of the passage?

“I’m sorry,” the bank teller said. “Your check has bounced (拒付).” Her words took a moment to sink in. This year had brought so much pain. A divorce (离婚), losing my house, then the loss of my job right before the holidays… and now the check for my car insurance had bounced!
Leaving the bank, I wondered what I would do. My unemployment (失业) checks were delayed, and everything
seemed to be piling up. How long could I last without money? How I missed my parents in the faraway Los Angeles, whom I had not seen for five years.
December in Michigan meant it was not only dark, but cold and snowy. Despite ( 尽 管 ) that, I had an urge to
take a walk on my favorite trail. Being cold and dark also meant there was a good chance no one else would be out, so I decided to go.
On the trail, I was grateful for sounds of rushing water coming from the little river. They covered my soft sobs while I walked. Tonight, it all felt like too much to bear.
Eventually, when my tears dried up, I headed home. Approaching my apartment (公寓) door, I noticed something
bulky hanging on the it. Probably another bill, I thought. While I struggled with my boots, I could see a card with my name on it through the clear plastic bag. Reaching in, I took out a very small, white envelope. Inside the envelope was a beautiful card with no name written on it, but it was stuffed with gift cards --- hundreds of dollars of gift cards that could meet my urgent needs!
I was in shock and awe. The timing of this amazing anonymous (匿名的) gift, arriving at exactly the right
moment, was almost too much to comprehend. Again, I began crying, but now they were tears of joy. I felt so loved.
I would go to Los Angeles tomorrow!

How to Welcome Change in Your Life
Do you embrace (欣然接受) the road you are now on or resist and avoid change at all costs when a recent event has shaken you greatly? 16
Don’t react.
What do we do when we don’t know what to do? First, stop, take a deep breath and don’t do anything. 17 It is having faith and trusting what you do know in the unknown.
Reflect on the past.
Another activity is to recall times in your life when you were faced with an unknown. Then, think about how you handled the situation. 18 Use your past experiences to bring you strength, and to remind you what you are capable of.
Make conscious decisions.
19 However, more possibilities open up when we are at peace. Go over you list of what ifs and make a more balanced list of the best and worst situations possible. Then talk to loved ones about what you would do in each situation and the choices you do have.
20
We often see fears as our greatest enemy, yet they provide us with an enormous opportunity for self-growth. What if we were to see them as friends who want to help us become a better person? Let your fears help you instead of hurting you. Then, write down what comes to you. You may be surprised by the answers.
Don’t panic.
Befriend your fears.
When we are fearful, our options seem limited.
Then try to feel at ease with the state of “not knowing”.
Learning from past failures helps you make better decisions.
Remembering these incidents will remind you that you’ve gone through difficult situations.
Here are things you can do in the midst of uncertainty to choose differently to change the track of your life.
