Why do you play sport
That’s the question Peter Barston from Connecticut US, asked kids in youth leagues all over his town in 2010. Form the data he gathered, reported The New York Times, Barston found the most important reason youngsters gave for playing sport was: to have fun.
Liu Xiang, 28, lives tens of thousands of miles away in China. The star hurdler may never have seen the results of that research. But he might have answered the same.
Last Monday turned out to be dramatic for Liu at the World Athletics Championships in Daegu, South Korea. At first he took the lead in the 110m hurdles final. Then he was obstructed twice by Robles of Cuba. Liu lost his balance and finished third.
But he still won the silver medal. The sport governing body IAAF took away Robles’s gold medal because he obstructed Liu. The winning medal was given to American Jason Richardson.
No matter the color of the medal, Liu Xiang said that the most important thing is to have fun. It is especially important for him because he has just recovered from an injury.
When asked if he was disappointed with his failure to win the gold, Liu said:”what is there to be disappointed with We should just enjoy what sport brings to us, and that’s enough.”
Liu said he regretted what had happened to Robles. “I feel sorry for him since we are very good friends. The competition is just a game to me. I don’t think Robles did it on purpose. He should not be blamed for what happened.”
Liu missed out on a gold medal. But his generosity and sportsmanship won him even more fans. “Liu won a ‘gold-colored silver medal’,” said the Beijing News.
American Olympic champion Joyner-Kersee, Sports Illustrated’s Greatest Female Athlete of the 20th century, said “Victory isn’t defined by wins or losses. It is defined by effort. If you can truthfully say, ‘I did the best I could, I gave everything I had,’ then you’re a winner.”Unit 2 Lesson 2 History Makers

Birthplace: Wuhan, China
Height: 5' 7 3/4" (1.72 m)
Weight: 143 lbs. (65 kg)
Plays: Right-handed (two-handed backhand)
Status: Pro (1999)
Early life
From the central China metropolis of Wuhan, Li was a badminton player when she was 6 but her coach kept noticing that she looked as if she were playing tennis. By the time she was 8, her coach asked her parents if she could switch to tennis.
Her father died when she was 14.
Between 1999 and 2004, Li won 20 women's singles titles: 19 ITF events and one—the first ever won by a Chinese woman—on the WTA Tour. In January 2008, she won her second WTA Tour title after a drought of over three and a quarter years.
She is noted in her playing style for quick reflexes and athleticism around the court and fast ground strokes which she scatters unpredictably to all corners of the playing surface.
On June 19, 2006, Li became the first Chinese woman to be ranked within the WTA top 30 at No. 30. Two months later, on August 14, 2006, Li entered the top 20 for the first time at No. 20. Her highest ranking to date is No. 15.
Li also frequently enters doubles tournaments at events alongside singles, and has won two WTA doubles titles and 16 further ITF doubles events. Her early success in doubles came mostly with Ting Li; but more recently she has made a habit of forming temporary women's doubles partnerships with players with whom she has previously enjoyed a healthy rivalry through repeated head-to-head meetings in singles tournaments.
Her career has been plagued by injuries that have interrupted her from playing for lengthy periods, and often preventing her from being highly ranked. She suffered a two-year hiatus from competition in her early 20s, lost several months at the height of the 2005 season to an ankle injury, and lost the second half of 2007 to a rib injury.(共35张PPT)

P29, Ex 5-7
He once played a man who could fly. Christopher Reeve demonstrated a rare ability that exceeds the speed of flight. Christopher learned to live outside his body in a way that few people have the strength or courage to do. All of us are, in some ways, prisoners in life -- some by limited thinking, others by physical limitation. But rarely has a man demonstrated such a wonderful ability to face limitation, to cry for all that it robbed him of, and then step beyond it into a life that knows no limitation. Each morning, being human, Christopher shed a few tears. But then he brushed them away, stopped feeling sorry for himself, and went on to be an example to others. He created his own freedom to be truly alive. Christopher Reeve found the Superman within and we celebrate his courage to be free.
