Welcome to Yellowstone National Park. Before we start our nature walk today,I’d like to give you a brief introduction to our National Park Service. The National Park Service began in the late 1800s.A small group of people found the land now called Yellowstone, and after hours of discussion around the campfire, they decided that it should be enjoyed by everyone. Two years later, the government declared it the first national park in the world. After it became a national park, many other areas of beautiful scenery were set aside. And in 1916,these parks came to be managed by the National Park Service. I am now employed by the National Park Service, and I am on duty at all time to answer questions and help any visitors with any difficulty. Nature walks, guided tours and campfire talks are offered by specially trained members. The park service also protects the animals and plants within the parks.

Almost everyone feels sleepy sometimes during the daytime. Being sleepy may get in the way of your daily work, childcare, and even activities for fun. Here are some ways to improve nighttime sleep and avoid daytime sleepiness.
1.Get adequate nighttime sleep.
That may sound obvious, but many of us cut down an hour or two off our sleep time in the morning or at night to do other things. Most adults need seven to nine hours a night, and teenagers usually need a full nine hours. Block out eight or nine hours for sleep every night.
2.Keep distractions out of bed.
“Remember your bed is only for sleep,” says the scientist.“You shouldn’t read, watch TV,play video games,or use laptop computers in bed.” Don’t do your bills or have heated discussions in bed, either. They may leave you sleepless.
3.Form a good habit.
You should form a good habit of going to bed and getting up at the same time at night and in the morning, including on weekends.
4.Gradually move to an earlier bedtime.
Another way of getting into a consistent (始终如一的) schedule is to try going to bed 15 minutes earlier each night for four nights. Then stick with the last bedtime. Slowly getting used to your schedule like this usually works better than suddenly trying to go to sleep an hour earlier.
5.Set consistent,healthy mealtimes.
Regular mealtimes, not just regular sleep times, help regulate our circadian rhythms (生理节奏).Eat a healthy breakfast and lunch on time instead of grabbing a piece of cake and coffee in the morning or a late sandwich on the run. Try to finish eating meals two or three hours before bedtime.
6.Exercise.
Regular exercise offers many benefits for sleep. Exercise generally makes it easier to fall asleep and sleep more soundly.

My 17?year?old daughter went off to college and having her away from home brought back memories of watching Peter Pan when she was little. In the classic TV production, one scene in particular impressed me: when Mrs. Darling puts her children into bed. As she turns off the last of the night lights, she takes one last look at the bedroom and says,“Dear night lights, protect my sleeping children.” As a mother,I know how much she loves her children.
It has been several weeks since we took our daughter to college and she seems to be adjusting (适应) well after a short period of homesickness. For us,though,it’s another story. Like most parents,I love checking in on my children at night. But now she’s gone, and I find nighttimes the hardest. I miss her most at night.
In my neighborhood, most of the parents whose kids are off to college are dealing with similar melancholy. My husband is filled with anxiety. One friend talked about getting this sick feeling in her stomach as she prepared for the college drop-off We complained that many of us were too busy to truly enjoy being with our children while we had them.
For us moms, seeing Toy Story 3 only made the sadness worse as we watched the character Andy, who is the same age as our kids, say goodbye to his childhood as he prepares to leave for college. And it’s not just “first-time” parents like me. Two moms who have kids already well into college said the separation didn’t get any easier.“You feel like something has been taken away from inside you,” said one of them.
I imagine things will get easier with time, especially as I see my daughter adjust to college life. Meanwhile,as I keep my cellphone close to me in bed and text my daughter goodnight and sweet dreams every night,I like to think at messages serve as a night light that keeps her safe.

When my mom and dad said that we could adopt a couple of cats,I jumped at the chance to have some lovely animals around the house. So we went to the Humane Society where there were a lot of animals up for adoption. The first thing I noticed was that there was not a lot of room for the animals and not a lot of supplies to care for them. Even though they didn’t have much, the people who worked there tried to care about the animals. Still,it seemed they had no enough food and medicine to keep the animals healthy.
My family and I finally decided to adopt two cats we named Sox and Sierra. We went up to the front desk to sign the papers for them, and that’s when I noticed a box on the counter. The Humane Society was hoping to get enough donations to buy more supplies for the animals and also build a new building to help more animals.
Later that day my mom and I went shopping, and as we were walking through the parking lot at the store,I noticed a green piece of paper not far from our car. It was kind of wet,but it looked like it could be a dollar bill,so I walked over and picked it up. It wasn’t a dollar bill-it was a twenty-dollar bill!
When I got home,I dried it off and thought about what to do with it. I considered spending it on a toy and a lot of other things. Right then,Sox climbed up onto my lap,and I knew what I was going to do with the money.
I asked my mom to take me back to the Humane Society so that I could put the money in the donation box. The lady at the counter thanked me,and I felt really good about what I did.

Recently a man came to me,because he was told that there was fluid around his heart. After trying many drugs which were of no use to reduce the fluid,he was told the only other choice was to have an operation. He refused because he knew that every illness has a mental cause and that if he had the operation but did not clear the mental cause, the fluid would return. At last,he searched the Internet to find a metaphysical healer (自然力治疗师),and he found me.
The mental cause of his disease was an experience of breaking up five years ago with several friends, whom he had known for over twenty years. This experience broke his heart. Not knowing how to “mend” his broken heart, his body created a “repair” by surrounding his heart with fluid to protect it from the sad feelings.
Our work focused on reminding him of the feelings of being loved and forgiving his friends. Months later, his heart was mended and the fluid disappeared. He left my office after the final session with a smile on his face and a spring in his steps.
The key is: to create a healthy body, you must be healthy not only in body, but also in mind.
To be mentally healthy, you need to build up strong relationships. Creating strong relationships will insure that you are accompanied by a network of loving persons. It is important for building a support system that boosts your spirits. Even when you are alone, you will not feel lonely or upset. Strong relationships are not spaceships-they are not hard to build.

A.Loving others will keep you in good spirits.
B.Heart illness can be cured without operation.
C.Creating strong relationships will keep you healthy.

65.Which of the following views may the writer agree with
A.Old friendship is easy to lose.

Anger and other strong emotions (情感) can probably cause deadly heart beats in certain weak people, the US researchers said on Monday.
Earlier studies have shown that earthquake, war or even the loss of a World Cup Soccer game can increase chances of death from sudden cardiac arrest,in which the heart stops passing blood.
“It’s certainly been shown in all different ways that when you put people under pressure, sudden death will increase,” said Dr.Rachel Lampert of Yale University in New Haven,Connecticut.
“Our study starts to look at how this really has an effect on the electrical system of the heart,” Lampert said.
She and her assistants studied 62 patients with heart disease and ICDs that can discover dangerous heart beats and send an electrical shock to bring a normal heart beat back.
Patients in the study took part in an exercise in which they told a recent angry period while Lampert’s team did a test called T Wave Alternant that measures electrical instability(不稳定性) in the heart.
Lampert said the team on purpose asked questions to get people to experience the angry period again.“We found in the lab that yes, anger did increase this electrical instability in these patients,” she said.
Next, they followed patients for three years to see which patients later had a cardiac arrest and needed a shock from their ICDs.“The people who had the highest anger were 10 times more likely than everyone else to have cardiac arrest,” she said.
Lampert said the study suggests that anger can be deadly,at least for people who are already weak to this type of electrical disorder in the heart.
67.From the passage we know cardiac arrest refers to ________.
A.someone who will be caught if he does something wrong
B.some place where you can show all your feelings
C.some disease that can kill people instantly
D.something used by patients in hospital
68.The underlined word “this” in Paragraph 4 refers to “________”.
A.feelings of anger and pressure
B.games
C.feelings of happiness
D.hunger
解析:选A。
69.What did Lampert use to measure electrical instability of patients’ heart
A.ICD and T Wave Alternant test.
B.ICD and Cardic arrest.
C.Cardiac arrest.
D.The passage doesn’t tell us.
解析:选A。
70.The passage is mainly about ________.
A.new findings for heart disease
B.that anger really can kill a person
C.a new test of measuring heart blood
D.a study showing danger of heart beats

One possible version:
Last week,I had a survey about the activities the students of our class did at noon at school. The results are as follows. Many students, about 55 percent, were doing their homework. About 30 percent were having a rest. About 10 percent were listening to MP3. Only 5 percent of them were eating snacks at that time.
As is shown in the chart,we always have too much homework to do every day. We students should learn to balance our spare time and studies. Just like a saying goes:“All work but no play makes Jack a dull boy,”What’s more,it’s necessary for us students to have a good rest at noon so that we will be energetic to attend lessons in the very afternoon.
Therefore, make full use of your time, get your work done more efficiently and then go in for more out-of-classroom activities. Only in this way can we enjoy a healthier life.(共44张PPT)

(having done) having been+v. ed
being+v. ed (being done)
having been+v. ed (having been done)
Hearing the news, they got excited.(=When they heard the news,...)
Be careful while/when crossing the street.(=...while/when you are crossing the street.)
Turning to the left, you will find the place you want.(=If you turn to the left,...)
Admitting what you said,I still think that you made a mistake.(=Although I admitted what you said,...)
Having been told many times,he still repeated the same mistake.(=Though he had been told many times,...)
I stood there,waiting for her.(=...,and waited for her.)
Having been bitten by a snake, she was frightened at it.(=Since she had been bitten by a snake,...)
Being so angry,he couldn’t go to sleep.(=As he was so angry,...)
It rained heavily, causing severe flooding in the area.(=...,so that it caused severe flooding in the area.)
My wife had a long talk with Sally, explaining why she didn’t want the children to play together.
The train having gone,we had to wait another day.(the train逻辑主语+having gone为独立主格结构)
Having been told many times, but he still couldn’t understand it.(×)
Having been told many times,he still couldn’t understand it.(√)已给他讲了许多遍,但他还是不理解它。
这些短语常见的有:generally speaking总的来说;judging from/by...根据……判断;speaking of说到……;talking of谈到……;frankly speaking坦白地说;considering.../taking...into consideration考虑到……;providing如果;supposing即使、如果;seeing...
Talking of the world resources, they are very limited.
Not knowing how to find the subway,I asked a policeman for help.
Having failed twice,he didn’t want to try again.
Having written two books,he was satisfied with himself.

(Text 6)
W:Why don’t we buy a car,dear
M:I have been thinking about it for a long time. I think it necessary for us to buy one. We live so far away from my company.
W:Yes. With a car,you wouldn’t have to catch a bus to work. It can save a lot of time.
M:Sure, but we don’t have enough money at present.
W:Why not borrow some from the bank I think we won’t have to borrow so much now.
M:Well, let’s go downtown and have a look.

Nicholas spoke well before he was one. At eighteen months he took telephone messages for his parents. At two he began to learn French. The strange thing about Nicholas is that he taught himself to read before he could speak.
His parents knew immediately that he could read. When he could speak,he corrected his spelling. He tried two different schools, but he was bored and unhappy and his parents decided that he couldn’t stay there. His parents did not have enough time to prepare special lessons for Nicholas. The MacMahons had no idea what to do with him. Then the West London Institute offered to help. Nicholas spends some of his time there, and also studies at home. He reads newspaper every day,and he can play the violin well. He doesn’t have any social life in the school. Nicholas is a clever child and the teac hers want to help him in every way.

A
I had been rather proud of myself when my friends and family got the ticket, whether it was for speeding, parking or stop sign violations (违反).It was something that happened to others. But last Friday I joined the club.
I was asked to do a new project last week. On Friday morning on my way to work,I suddenly remembered that I had spent the past six weeks without considering that I had a week’s vacation planned during that time. I was very disappointed with myself for not remembering it.
The truth is that I was not paying enough attention to my driving and I did not come to a complete stop at the stop sign in front of a school. I was so distracted (思想不集中的)that I didn’t even notice I had a policeman on my tail with his lights flashing. Finally I looked in my mirror and caught on.
The policeman was rude and took my papers. Fortunately,I had everything up to date and since I had never had a ticket before, there was nothing for him to do but write me a ticket. While I was sitting there in the seat of “shame”,I felt bad. If I had been that distracted and a child had run onto the road, perhaps I would have not reacted as well as I could have. It was a wake-up call.
People at work asked me if I tried to talk my way out of it. Frankly,it never occurred to me. I felt guilty. Now I no longer have a clean driving record. Please be careful out there,as a moment’s distraction can lead to tragedy.

A.people who are crazy about driving cars
B.a club for drivers without much experience
C.people who get tickets for breaking traffic rules
D.a club for people to talk about their driving stories
根据前文的get the ticket, whether it was for speeding, parking or stop sign violations可知the club在这里是指那些因违反交通规则被开了罚单的人。
53.What made the writer unable to focus on her driving
A.Planning how to spend the vacation.
B.Thinking of the forgotten vacation.
C.Thinking about her work.
D.Missing her children.

C.to enjoy the small things in life

Have you ever noticed what happens to an idea once you express it Just talking about it or writing it down causes you to make it clear in your own mind. How can you use this to increase your brain power Start writing.
By putting thoughts into words, you are telling yourself the logic(逻辑)behind what you think, feel,or only partly understand. Often, explaining a thought is the process of understanding. In other words, you increase your brain power by exercising your “explain power”.
Try this experiment. Explain how you’ll increase your brain power, even if you have no idea how right now. Just start with anything, and create an explanation. For example, start with “I’ll learn chess,” or “I’ll read an article on the mind every week.” Explain how that will help. You’ll be surprised how often this becomes a workable plan, and if you actually do this, you’ll have a better understanding of your brain twenty minutes from now.
Another benefit of writing is that it helps you remember. Many,if not most, highly productive people are always taking notes. You can try keeping it all in your head, but if you keep a journal of your ideas the next time you’re working on a big project, you’ll probably have more success.
Want to understand a topic Write a book about it. That’s an extreme example, but if you are learning something new, write a letter to a friend about it,and you will understand it better. Want to invent something Write an explanation of the problem, why you want to solve it,and why it is worth solving, and you’re half-way there.
Writers don’t always write because they clearly understand something beforehand. Often, they write about something because they want to understand it. You can do the same. Writing will help bring you to an understanding. Give it a try.

A.A Way on How to Write

A.you are already successful
B.you still need to work hard

58.What’s the main purpose of the writer writing the text
A.To advise readers to start their writing.
B.To explain the importance of writing.
C.To persuade readers to become writers.
D.To increase readers’ brain power.
解析:选A。
C
It looks like a scene from the thriller movie Jaws, but these photos of a huge shark swimming with swimmers were in fact taken in Britain. The amazing pictures, which showed that the basking shark (姥鲨) was swimming friendly with swimmers, were taken at Porthcurno beach,Cornwall, where the basking shark was swimming just yards off shore.
The single 14?foot giant was feeding in the shallow waters off the scenic area, and quickly became curious about the swimmers and surfers sharing the water. Though it came within touching distance, the swimmers and surfers were in no danger. The large sharks are plankton (浮游生物) feeders-unlike the man-eating Great White from Jaws.
Beach-goer Rachel Hosken, who took the pictures, said that several basking sharks had been seen in the area.“It is one of the few I have ever seen around this year and it was great to see,” she said excitedly.“There are usually more of them by now,but for some reason there are fewer around than normal at this time of year. I think more have been spotted in deeper waters, but the particular one in the pictures seems to have taken a liking to this spot. I have seen it a few times.”
Known as the gentle giant of the sea,the basking shark is the second largest fish in the sea, only weighing lighter than the whale shark. They can grow to over 36 feet (11 meters) and weigh up to seven tons (7,000 kilograms) and feed on a diet of plankton and small fish. Basking sharks normally begin to appear in May and June.

A.swimmers and surfers were escaping
B.surfers were trying to frighten the basking shark

For the people living in the Nile Basin, the river is their life. This 6,825 km waterway, whose watershed (流域) covers three million square kilometers, flows through mountains, woodlands, lakes and deserts. Its potential for fishing, tourism and shipping is great-but so are its challenges.
Water shortage, already serious in Egypt and Sudan, will soon influence several other countries in the watershed as well. Today, about 160 million people depend on the Nile River for their living. Within the next 25 years, the district’s population is expected to double, adding to the demand brought about by growth in industry and agriculture. The frequent drought adds to the urgency.
Water quality is also a problem. Precious soil is washed out to sea. Wastes from industry and agriculture create pollution. Higher concentrations of salt influence irrigated soils. Water-borne diseases remain unchecked. In areas where it’s hot and damp, hyacinths grow so fast that they choke off lakes, dams and other sections of the river, making it difficult for fishing and other businesses to move forward.
Native people along the narrow area of farmland have watched the sand move closer day by day. They’ve seen the river change course, and their only source of water thickened with mud. They’re very poor and have few choices.
But a new program, the Nile Basin Initiative(NBI),is offering very practical assistance. The program is more than just a water-management project. It’s a plan for the social and economic development of a vast district: it concentrates on the needs of the poorest of the poor and the environment that supports them.
These are whole ecosystem problems, calling for united solutions (解决办法).Half the Nile Basin’s countries are among the world’s poorest nations; yet, somehow, they must find the resources, skills and political will to overcome these challenges.
63.What are the great challenges the Nile Basin faces
A.The development of shipping industry and over-fishing of native people.
B.Overfishing of native people and increasing population.
C.Water shortage and water quality.
D.Increasing population and tourism.

A.plants B.fish
C.rocks D.salts
解析:选A。
65.The program NBI is mainly aimed at ________.
A.preventing water pollution
B.changing the river course
C.improving living conditions of the poor
D.preventing land from becoming desert
66.What would be the best title of this passage
A.People’s life in Egypt and Sudan
B.Frequent drought in Egypt and Sudan
C.The poorest countries in the Nile Basin
D.The ecosystem problems in the Nile Basin

AN EXCITING JOB
I have the greatest job in the world.I travel to unusual places and work alongside people from all over the world.Sometimes working outdoors, sometimes in an office, sometimes using scientific equipment and sometimes meeting local people and tourists,I am never bored.Although my job is occasionally dangerous.I don’t mind because danger excites me and makes me feel alive. However, the most important thing about my job is that I help protect ordinary people from one of the most powerful forces on earth—the volcano.
I was appointed as a volcanologist working for the Hawaiian Volcano Observatory (HVO) twenty years ago. My job is collecting information for a database about Mount Kilauea, which is one of the most active volcanoes in Hawaii. Having collected and evaluated the information,I help other scientists to predict where lava from the volcano will flow next and how fast. Our work has saved many lives because people in the path of the lava can be warned to leave their houses. Unfortunately,we cannot move their homes out of the way,and many houses have been covered with lava or burned to the ground.
When boiling rock erupts from a volcano and crashes back to earth,it causes less damage than you might imagine. This is because no one lives near the top of Mount Kilauea, where the rocks fall. The lava that flows slowly like a wave down the mountain causes far more damage because it buries everything in its path under the molten rock. However, the eruption itself is really exciting to watch and I shall never forget my first sight of one.

It was in the second week after I arrived in Hawaii.Having worked hard all day,I went to bed early.I was fast asleep when suddenly my bed began shaking and I heard a strange sound, like a railway train passing my window. Having experienced quite a few earthquakes in Hawaii already, I didn’t take much notice.I was about to go back to sleep when suddenly my bedroom became as bright as day.
I ran out of the house into the back garden where I could see Mount Kilauea in the distance. There had been an eruption from the side of the mountain and red hot lava was fountaining hundreds of metres into the air.It was an absolutely fantastic sight.
The day after this eruption I was lucky enough to have a much closer look at it. Two other scientists and I were driven up the mountain and dropped as close as possible to the crater that had been formed during the eruption.Having earlier collected special clothes from the observatory,we put them on before we went any closer. All three of us looked like spacemen. We had white protective suits that covered our whole body, helmets, big boots and special gloves.
It was not easy to walk in these suits, but we slowly made our way to the edge of the crater and looked down into the red, boiling centre. The other two climbed down into the crater to collect some lava for later study, but this being my first experience, I stayed at the top and watched them.
Today, I am just as enthusiastic about my job as the day I first started.Having studied volcanoes now for many years,I am still amazed at their beauty as well as their potential to cause great damage.

For more than two days in September 1974,the people of Honduras shut their windows, locked their doors and covered in their homes.Fifi was outside, and they were frightened.
By the time Fifi had left,8,000 people were dead.Fifi wasn’t a pet dog as the name suggested. It was a hurricane, one of the most destructive natural phenomena in the world.
Why did we give human names to storms and hurricanes
We didn’t always. Two hundred years ago, many hurricanes in the Caribbean were named after the saint’s (基督教徒的) day on which the storm occurred.Later, storms were known by the name of the city where they came ashore.
Meteorologists (气象学家)then tried naming storms after the latitude (纬度)and longitude (经度) where they occurred.
Finally,in 1953,hurricanes started getting people’s names-specifically,female names.Male names were added in 1979.
There are six sets of names for what the experts call “Atlantic tropical cyclones”.
Each list is used every six years and consists of 21 names, starting with every letter but Q,U,X,Y and Z.The names alternate (交替) between male and female.
A storm won’t get a name until its winds reach 39 mph or about 62.4 kph,at which point it becomes a tropical storm. At 74 mph or 118.4 kph it’s declared a hurricane.
The 126 names on the list are used only for storms that form off the Atlantic coast of the US.There are separate lists for the Pacific.
So what happens if a hurricane should cross from the Atlantic to the Pacific It happened before. The storm just gets a new name and sometimes a new sex.
Max Mayfield is the director of the National Hurricane Centre,in Miami,Florida. He’s in charge of picking new names for storms off the Atlantic coast.
He doesn’t do it alone, though. His counterparts in two dozen other countries in the Caribbean,Central America and North America vote on what names will replace retired names.
1.Which of the following is true according to the passage
A.There were not hurricanes two centuries ago.
B.The Caribbean is a state of the United States.
C.The Caribbean is a place where hurricanes often occur.
D.Fifi was formed off the Pacific.

A.citizens holding the same opinion
B.people with a similar position or function
C.passengers traveling by sea
D.friends or relatives working abroad

A.David,Helen,Jack,Mike Lucy
B.Lucy,Mary,Owen,Tina,Peter
C.Sam,Tina,Victor,Victoria,Jean
D.Peter,Rose,Sam,Teresa,Victor

PITTSBURGH—For most people, snakes seem unpleasant or even threatening. But Howie Choset sees in their delicate movements a way to save lives.
The 37?year?old Carnegie Mellon University professor has spent years developing snake-like robots he hopes will eventually slide through fallen buildings in search of victims trapped after natural disasters or other emergencies.
Dan Kara is president of Robotics Trends,a Northboro ,Mass-based company that publishes an online industry magazine and runs robotics trade shows. He said there are other snake-like robots being developed, mainly at universities, but didn’t know of one that could climb pipes.
The Carnegie Mellon machines are designed to carry cameras and electronic sensors and can be controlled with a joystick(操纵杆).They move smoothly with the help of small electric motors,or servos, commonly used by hobbyists in model airplanes.
Built from lightweight materials, the robots are about the size of a human arm or smaller. They can sense which way is up,but are only as good as their human operators,Choset added.
Sam Stover,a search term manager with the Federal Emergency Management Agency based in Indiana, said snake-type robots would offer greater mobility than equipment currently available, such as cameras attached to extendable poles.
“It just allows us to do something we’ve not been able to do before,” Stover said,“We_ needed _them_ yesterday.”
He said sniffer dogs are still the best search tool for rescue workers, but that they can only be used effectively when workers have access to damaged buildings.
Stover, among the rescue workers who handled the aftermath(后果) of Hurricane Katrina, said snake robots would have helped rescuers search flooded houses in that disaster.
Choset said the robots may not be ready for use for another five to ten years, depending on funding.
1.Which institution is responsible for the development of Choset’s robots
A.Robotics Trends.
B.Pittsburgh City Council.
C.Carnegie Mellon University.
D.Federal Emergency Management Agency.
2.Choset believes that his invention ________.
A.can be attached to an electronic arm
B.can be used by hobbyists in model airplanes
C.can find victims more quickly than a sniffer dog
D.can sense its way no better than its operators
从第五段“They can sense which way is up,but are only as good as their human operators,Choset added.”
3.By saying “We needed them yesterday”(Paragraph 7),Stover means that snake-like robots ________.
A.could help handle the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina
B.would have been put to use in past rescue work
C.helped rescuers search flooded houses yesterday
D.were in greater need yesterday than today
解析:选B。 这句话后面的段落讲到Stover对sniffer dogs只能在工人到达被毁坏的建筑物时才能有效使用感到遗憾,并且认为“snake robots would have helped rescuers search flooded houses in that disaster.”(倒数第二段)。
4.What is the text mainly about
A.Snake-like robots used in industries.
B.Snake-like robots made to aid in rescues.
C.The development of snake-like robots.
D.The working principles of snake-like robots.
解析:选B。 文中讲到Choset研究snake-like robots是因为“he hopes will eventually slide through fallen building in search of victims trapped after natural disasters or other emergencies.”

The ocean bottom,a region nearly 2.5 times greater than the total land area of the Earth,is even today largely unexplored. Until about a century ago,the deep-ocean floor was completely inaccessible and hidden beneath waters averaging over 3,600 meters deep. Totally without light and subjected to intense pressures hundreds of times greater than at the Earth’s surface, the deep-ocean bottom is a strange environment to humans,in some ways as forbidding and remote as the outer space.
Although researchers have taken samples(样品) of deep-ocean rocks for over a century, the first detailed global study of the ocean bottom did not actually start until 1968,with the beginning of the National Science Foundation’s Deep Sea Drilling Project (DSDP).Using techniques first developed for the offshore oil and gas industry, the DSDP’s drill ship, the Glomar Challenger, was able to maintain a steady position on the ocean’s surface and drill in very deep waters, taking samples of rock from the ocean floor.
The Glomar Challenger completed 96 voyages in a 15?year research program that ended in November 1983.During this time,it sailed 600,000 kilometers and took almost 20,000 samples of rocks around the world. Those samples have allowed geologists to reconstruct what the planet looked like hundreds of millions of years ago and to make out what it will probably look like millions of years in the future. Today, largely on the strength of evidence gathered during the Glomar Challenger’s voyages, nearly all earth scientists agree on the theories of plate tectonics(构造学) and continental drift that explains many of the geological processes.
The samples of rocks drilled by the Glomar Challenger have also provided a climatic record stretching back hundreds of millions of years. The information of past climatic change can be used to predict future climates.
5.What does the underlined word “inaccessible” in line 4 means
A.unrecognizable B.unreachable
C.unusable D.unreasonable
