Ⅱ.阅读理解
A
Thomas
Hardy,
probably
the
most
searching
and
knowledgeable
novelist
of
his
time,
was
born
on
June
2,
1840,
in
Dorsetshire,
England.
He
died
on
January
11,
1928.
In
his
youth,
Hardy
read
much
and
dreamt
of
becoming
a
poet,
but
he
studied
and
practiced
architecture
as
an
assistant
to
a
London
architect,
winning
a
prize
for
design.
The
fine
descriptions
of
structure
in
his
novels
were
probably
somewhat
due
to
his
architectural
training.
For
five
years
Hardy
worked
hard
to
practice
writing
poetry,
but
when
he
was
twenty?seven,
he
turned
to
fiction.
His
first
novel
finished
by
1867,
but
according
to
the
advice
of
George
Meredith
he
decided
not
to
publish
it.
After
he
abandoned
his
first
novel,
his
another
novel
Desperate
Remedies,
appeared
in
1871.
During
the
next
twenty?five
years
he
published
ten
more
novels
and
two
collections
of
short
stories.
Under
the
Greenwood
Tree
(1872)
was
never
surpassed
(超越)
in
happy
and
delicate
perfection
of
art.
This
and
his
next
novel,
A
Pair
of
Blue
Eyes
(1873),
began
to
show
deep
irony
(讽刺)
which
is
so
obvious
throughout
Hardy's
writings.
Far
from
the
Madding
Crowd
(1874)
was
his
first
popular
success.
It
shows
Hardy's
amazing
power
of
describing
nature
as
symbolic
background
for
his
characters,
an
organic
part
of
the
action
of
his
story.
This
was
the
earliest
of
what
he
called
his
novels
of
character
and
environment,
which
included
The
Return
of
the
Native,
Tess
of
the
d'Urbervilles,
his
masterpiece,
and
Jude
the
Obscure.
Not
until
he
was
fifty?eight
years
old
was
his
first
collection
of
poems
published,
and
he
was
sixty?four
when
the
first
part
of
his
drama
The
Dynasts
surprised
the
literary
world.

Matthew
Ames
returned
to
Brisbane
from
Melbourne
at
the
weekend
after
experiencing
one
of
many
rounds
of
surgery,
becoming
Australia's
first
bionic
(仿生学的)
man.
Matthew
Ames
was
at
home
on
Monday
morning,
adjusting
to
national
media
attention
and
life
with
titanium
rods
(钛杆)
in
what
remains
of
his

and
legs.
If
all
goes
to
plan,
later
in
the
year
he
will
have
more
surgery
to
fix
bionic
prosthetics
(假肢).
It
all
started
15
months
ago,
when
the
Origin
Energy
engineer—who
lived
with
his
wife
Diane
and
four
children
in
Camp
Hill
in
Brisbane's
east—began
feeling
like
he
was
coming
down
with
the
“man
flu”.
A
week
later
he
was
in
hospital,
senseless
and
on
life
support,
which
was
caused
by
a
deadly
form
of
bacteria.
“He
had
a
99%
chance
of
dying,”
Matthew's
son
Luke,
9,
said
in
a
program,
SundayNight
which
drew
more
than
2.12
million
viewers
nationally.
Matthew's
younger
sons
Ben,
8,
and
Will,
7,
added:“And
only
1%
of
living.”
Proudly
Will
concluded:“And
the
1%
won
against
the
99%.”
Matthew's
families
were
told
Matthew's
only
chance
of
survival
was
to
have
his
four
limbs
removed.
For
Diane,
the
choice
was
easy.
She
could
not
allow
their
children
to
grow
up
without
a
father.
Eventually,
Matthew
came
to,
only
to
find
he
had
no
arms
and
legs.
On
Monday,
he
is
attending
a
Pride
of
Australia
Medal
ceremony
for
which
he
has
been
nominated
(被提名)
in
the
courage
category.
“The
40?year?old
is
slowly
getting
used
to
a
few
more
people
knowing
about
his
story,”
his
sister
Kate
told
Fairfax
Media.
“We
told
his
story
so
that
he
was
known
to
the
kids,
and
thus
people
wouldn't
stop
and
stare,”
Kate
continued.
“We're
not
sure
what
to
expect
now
that
his
story
has
aired
across
Australia.
The
effect
it
would
have
in
a
positive
way
on
people
is
beyond
our
expectation.”

Antarctica
(南极洲)'s
melting
ice,
which
has
caused
global
sea
levels
to
rise
by
at
least
13.8
millimeters
over
the
past
40
years,
was
thought
to
primarily
come
from
the
unstable
West
Antarctic
Ice
Sheet
(WAIS).
Now,
scientists
have
found
that
the
East
Antarctic
Ice
Sheet
(EAIS)—considered
largely
unaffected
by
climate
change—may
also
be
melting
at
an
unexpectedly
rapid
speed.
The
WAIS,
whose
base
is
below
sea
level,
has
long
been
considered
the
most
likely
to
break
down.
Besides
gravity,
a
deep
current
of
warm
water
slips
beneath
the
sheet,
melting
it
from
below
until
it
becomes
a
floating
shelf
at
risk
of
breaking
away.
In
contrast,
extreme
cold
and
a
base
mostly
above
sea
level
are
thought
to
keep
the
EAIS
relatively
safe
from
warm
waters.
But
as
greenhouse
gases
warm
much
of
the
planet,
driving
stronger
polar
winds,
some
scientists
think
warm
water
carried
by
a
circular
current
will
start
to
invade
East
Antarctica's
once
unassailable
ice.
A
cooperation
of
more
than
60
scientists
last
year,
published
in
Nature,
estimated
that
the
EAIS
actually
added
about
5
billion
tons
of
ice
each
year
from
1992
to
2017.
Eric
Rignot
of
the
University
of
California,
Irvine,
and
colleagues
combined
40
years
of
satellite
imagery
and
climate
modeling
and
found
that
overall
Antarctica
now
sends
six
times
more
ice
into
the
sea
each
year
than
it
did
in
1979,
with
the
majority
coming
from
West
Antarctica.
But
East
Antarctica
was
responsible
for
more
than
30%
of
Antarctica's
contribution
to
the
13.8?millimeter
sea
level
rise
over
the
past
40
years.
“The
more
we
look
at
this
system
the
more
we
realize
this
is
fragile,”
Rignot
says.
“Once
these
glaciers
become
unstable
there
is
no
red
button
to
press
to
stop
it.”
Rignot
hopes
the
study
brings
greater
attention
to
a
part
of
Antarctica
that
has
traditionally
been
understudied.
Helen
Fricker,
a
glaciologist
(冰川学家)
in
California,
agrees.
“We
need
to
monitor
the
entire
Antarctica
and
we
just
can't
do
that
without
international
cooperation.”
1.What

of

Where
the
jobs
are?
Thinking
about
a

in
public
safety
or
law
enforcement?
Statistics
show
that
these
careers
are
growing,
have
great
benefits,and
can
be
very
rewarding.
__1__
But
there
are
hundreds
of
public
safety
jobs
to
think
about?everything
from
police
officer
who
protect
people
to
driver's
license
examiners
who
test
driving
skills.
For
example,Angela
Bloom
is
an
animal
control
worker
for
the
city.
She
and
her
co?workers
pick
up
animals
that
are
lost,
sick,
or
dangerous.
__2__
For
this
job,being
in
good
physical
condition
is
important
and
a
high
school
diploma
is
required.
It
may
be
necessary
for
candidates
to
have
received
on?the?job
training
and
hold
certification.
__3__
He
looks
for
health
problems
in
places
where
people
prepare
and
serve
food.
There
are
many
kinds
of
jobs
for
inspectors.
For
example,
public
safety
inspectors
look
for
safety
violations
or
dangerous
workplaces
and
fire
inspectors
look
for
problems
in
buildings
that
could
cause
fires.
__4__
A
college
degree
is
often
necessary.
Actually,
applicants
with
a
bachelor's
or
master's
degree,
related
experience
or
training
in
a
foreign
language
may
have
the
best
job
prospects.
__5__
For
those
interested
in
working
in
this
dynamic
and
rewarding
field,
a
wide
variety
of
options
are
available.
So
remember,
if
you
like
working
with
the
public,
and
are
looking
for
a
good
job,
a
career
in
public
safety
might
be
perfect
for
you.
A.Martin
Lee
is
a
health
inspector.
B.You
can
come
and

for
the
degree.
C.They

B
When
I
was
growing
up
my
mother
used
to
eat
some
unpleasant
things.
She'd
peel
an
apple
for
me
and
eat
the
skins
and
then
when
I
was
done,
she'd
eat
the
fruit
I'd
left
around
the
core
(果核).
I
thought
something
was
wrong
with
her.
My
mother
dressed
ugly,
too.
She
never
got
herself
a
new
pair
of
sneakers.
I
never
understood
why
she
dressed
so
badly.
However,
she
always
bought
me
really
cute
coats.
I'd
pray
she'd
never
come
to
my
school.
My
mother
was
so
embarrassing.
Then
one
morning,
recently,
I
finally
got
it.
After
eating
my
daughter's
unwanted
pieces
of
toast
for
breakfast,
we
went
shopping.
I
needed
new
shoes
for
a
wedding.
However,
once
we
got
to
the
mall
I
realized
that
my
feet
weren't
growing.
It
was
just
a
party.
No
one
was
going
to
be
looking
at
my
feet.
But
the
baby?
She'd
nearly
outgrown
all
of
her
shoes
and
would
be
in
a
new
size
soon.
She
needed
new
shoes
more
than
I
did.
When
we
got
home,
we
had
lunch.She
ate
the
tops
of
the
broccoli
(西兰花)
and
I
realized
I'd
learned
to
love
the
tough
stems
(茎).
I
wanted
a
peach
but
there
were
only
two
left,
so
I
decided
that
I
didn't
really
like
peaches
as
much
as
I
did
when
I
was
little
anyway.
Neither
did
my
mom
and
that's
why
she
always
let
me
have
the
last
ones
in
the
package
too.
When
you're
a
parent,
you
don't
mind
giving
up
the
good
parts.
I
don't
need
a
bunch
of
new
things
because
I
have
all
I
need.
I
have
my
daughter
and
her
happiness
and
I
have
a
mother
that
I
finally
appreciate—a
mother
who
once
gave
me
all
the
good
parts
in
hope
that
one
day
I'd
grow
up
to
be
that
kind
of
parent
too.

Ⅱ.阅读理解
Of
all
my
dreams,
my
least
favorite
is
the
one
where
I'm
in
a
car.
It
always
begins
with
me
driving,
but
eventually
I
realize
that
for
some
reason
I'm
sitting
in
the
back
seat.
I
can't
keep
the
car
under
control,
rushing
toward
the
roadside
until,
screaming,
I
wake
up.
This
is
like
the
passenger
experience
in
Waymo's
self?driving
cars.
You
sit
in
the
back
seat
of
a
vehicle
and
watch
as
the
wheel
turns
itself
above
an
entirely
empty
driving
seat.
“We
made
you
live
your

a
Waymo
staff
member
joked
after
I
exited
one
of
the
company's
fully
self?driving

following
a
quick
drive
inside
its
secret
testing
site.
Waymo,
a
self?driving
car
company,
arranged
these

for
40
journalists
at
this
site.
There
were
also
some
demonstrations
(演示).
We
watched
as
a
Waymo
car
was
cut
off
by
a
speeding
vehicle.
Then
the
employees
created
a
situation
in
which
a
pile
of
moving
boxes
fell
into
the
street
just
as
another
car
passed
in
the
opposite

Throughout
the

the

performed
impressively,
driving
with
the
level
of
care
you
might
take
if
you
had
a

in
the

seat.
During
these
demonstrations,
Waymo

what
it

with
these

The
company
has
laid
out
four

But
Waymo's

Krafcik,
wouldn't
show
which

these

likely
to
come
to

first,
or
on
what
kind
of
timeline.
I
can't
help

admire
that
Waymo
is
succeeding
in
developing
this

There
