On account of the government shutdown, many of the city’s best attractions, such as the national museums, are closed. It may affect your social plans. That’s especially true if you have out-of-town visitors coming to the District. Don’t worry! For every closed museum, we’ve offered up a suitable substitute that is privately run, thus not subject to the shutdown. Here’s where you can go instead.
Banneker-Douglass Museum or Alexandria Black History Museum
The National Museum of African American History and Culture is one of the hottest draws on the National Mall, with free tickets taken weeks in advance. Its sister museum, the Anacostia Community Museum, takes a community-focused look at African American history. So does the Banneker- Douglass Museum in Annapolis, which traces the African American experience in Maryland, and the Alexandria Black History Museum, where exhibitions honor local activists and explore the in?uence of slavery in the area. And unlike the African American Museum, neither requires you to plan ahead.
Glenstone
Wandering through the galleries at Glenstone, you’ll come across some of the biggest names in 20th century art—Jackson Pollock, Jean-Michel Basquiat and Robert Rauschenberg. Glenstone sits on a 230-acre estate ( 土 地 ) that doubles as an outdoor sculpture garden. Free tickets for Glenstone are often reserved weeks in advance, but 72 free tickets are available every day for anyone who takes a Montgomery County Ride—On Bus from Rockville Metro Station to the museum.
The African Art Museum of Maryland
Masks, musical instruments and jewelry can be found in Fulton, where the African Art Museum of Maryland houses a collection of traditional and contemporary African artworks and objects. And the best part, for visitors on a budget? Admission is free.
1. Where can visitors go to explore the history of African Americans during the shutdown?
A. The galleries at Glenstone B. The African Art Museum of Maryland
C. The African American Museum. D. Banneker-Douglass Museum.
2. What can visitors do at Glenstone?
A. Make sculptures in the outdoor garden.
B.Take a Montgomery County Ride on bus.
C. Get access to works of famous artists.
D. Enjoy a collection of contemporary African artworks.
3. What is the main purpose of the text?
A. To introduce different kinds of art exhibitions.
B. To provide an alternative to museums during the government shutdown.
C. To compare public museums with private ones.
D. To advertise some private museums in the area.
B
The snow was falling and the roads had become dangerous. The schools were dismissed early, but much to my surprise, my appointment wasn't canceled. So I went, feeling especially heroic. As far as I could see, I was risking my life to keep my word. Snow or no snow, I would be on time for my scheduled donation at the local blood center.
When I got there, I discovered I wasn't alone. Four more "hero-types" were already lying back in donor chairs with lines attached to their veins(静脉), and machines quietly pumping away to collect their life-saving gifts.
Seeing my fellow donors honoring their own commitments, I realized why I was there. I lay back in my donor chair, ready to make a difference to the life of someone I would never meet.
To be honest, I'd never really thought about why I donate. I just did it. But a few months ago, during one of my regular donations I learned that my blood was specifically for a cancer patient and for a newborn baby—both patients needed what I would give in order to live. I've viewed my visits to the blood center differently ever since.
My wife Karen is a donor, too. And more importantly, she has been on the bone marrow(骨髓)list for fifteen years, ever since she signed up to provide bone marrow to a kindergartner with leukemia(白血病). That little girl died before Karen's bone marrow could help her, but Karen was called again recently. Her test results were still on file, and it turned out she was a potential match for someone else. The caller asked Karen if she would still be willing to become a bone marrow donor. “Yes,” she said and then immediately began answering questions on the pages of paperwork for further testing. It was to race against time.
I wish I could say that this race was won. Unluckily, it wasn't. The caller later thanked Karen for her participation and asked a few more questions—including whether or not she'd remain on the donor list. “Of course,” Karen answered.
We still keep making appointments. I don't know whose life my donation may affect. Most likely it will be a stranger, but on some day the person needing blood could be you or me or maybe a loved one. It is worthwhile to take our time to donate. I like the sense of giving.
4.Why was the man going out on such a snowy day?
A. He was going to risk his life for fun.
B. He was going to do a heroic deed to show off to others.
C. He was going to give a donation to help others in need.
D. He was going to have an important appointment with his wife.
5. Who or what caused the man to view his visits to the blood center differently?
A. A cancer patient and a newborn baby who needed what he gave to live.
B. The fact that his wife would remain on the donor list after several failures.
C. The fact that his wife signed up to provide bone marrow for a girl with leukemia.
D. Four more “hero-types” lying back in donor chairs with lines attached to their veins.
6. What does the author think of his wife Karen's action?
A. He objects to what she does.
B. He thinks highly of what she does.
C. He is indifferent to what she does.
D. He doesn't show an attitude.
7. Which of the following may the man agree with?
A. One good turn deserves another.
B. Where there is a will, there is a way.
C. Constant dripping wears away a stone.
D. The rose's in her hand, the flavor in mine.
C
Classifying things is critical for our daily lives. For example, we have to detect spam mail (垃圾邮件), false political news. When we use AI, such tasks are based on “classification technology” in machine learning—having the computer learn, using the boundary separating positive and negative data. For example, “positive” data would be photos including a happy face, and “negative” data photos that include a sad face. Once a classification boundary is learned, the computer can determine whether a certain data is positive or negative.
However, the difficulty with this technology is that it requires both positive and negative data for the learning process, and negative data are not available in many cases. For instance, when a retailer(零售商) is trying to predict who will make a purchase, they can easily find data on customers who have purchased from them (positive data), but it is basically impossible to obtain data on customers who have never purchased from them (negative data), since they do not have access to their competitors’ data.
According to lead author Takashi Ishida from RIKEN AIP, “Previous classification methods could not cope with the situation where negative data were not available, but we have made it possible for computers to learn with only positive data,as long as we have a confidence score for our positive data, constructed from information such as buying intention or the active rate of app users. Using our new method, we can let computers learn a classifier only from positive data equipped with confidence.”
According to Ishida, “This discovery could expand the range of applications where classification technology can be used. Even in fields where machine learning has been actively used, our classification technology could be used in new situations where only positive data can be gathered due to data regulation or business constraints(限制). In the near future, we hope to put our technology to use in various research fields, such as natural language processing, computer vision, robotics, and bioinformatics.”
8.How can the computer distinguish the positive data from the negative data?
A.By learning the classification boundary.
B.By updating the data collected regularly.
C.By separating happy faces and sad ones.
D.By introducing classification technology.
9.Why is the example mentioned in Paragraph 2?
A.To prove how important the positive data are.
B.To confirm that data on customers are complete.
C.To argue that retailers get their competitor’ data.
D.To explain why negative data are hard to acquire.
10.What do the underlined words “new method” in Paragraph 3 refer to?
A.Analyzing buying intention.
B.Building a confidence score.
C.Assessing the active rate of app users.
D.Equipping the computer with positive data.
11.What can be a suitable title for the text?
A.The History of Classification Technology
B.Smarter AI:Machine Learning without Negative Data
C.Bigger Data:Computers Assisting Language Processing
D.The Comparison between Positive Data and Negative Data
D
Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) are compounds that are set to solve some tough challenges: producing water in the desert, removing greenhouse gases from the air and storing dangerous gases more safely.
The Arizona desert is really dry. Anyone stuck in it without water will die from dehydration (脱水) within three days, unless they have one of Omar Yaghi’s next-generation water harvesters. Although daytime humidity(湿度)is only about 10 per cent, this rises to 40 per cent at night, which means there’s enough water in the atmosphere to support life—if it can be transformed into liquid form.
That’s exactly what Yaghi’s device does. It’s a box about the size of a small microwave oven designed to suck the humidity from the air at night and turn it into drinking water the next day using only the heat of the sun as its power source. What makes it work is a special material called a metal-organic framework (MOF), which at normal temperatures attracts water molecules (分子) onto its surface of its internal pores(细孔). Warm it up and the water is released, each harvester producing one-third of a cup of pure drinking water.
“With further improvements, a device, the size of a washing machine, could produce enough water for the basic needs of a household, ”says Yaghi, a chemist at the University of California. One-third of the world’s population lack safe drinking water; for them such a device could be a lifesaver.
These crystalline cluster(结晶群)of metals, such as aluminum or magnesium, linked by organic molecules can be made into materials with an extremely high absorption ability, attracting specific molecules to their surface. In this way, MOFs cling to a variety of liquids and gases.
MOFs work thanks to their unique structure—large quantities of nanometer-sized internal spaces. In fact one MOF has so many pores that they would cover an area as large as six football fields. MOFs are also extremely stable light and have many different uses: their molecular structure can be varied to attract specific molecules, such as water, and their pores can be designed to best store them. Adding a small amount of heat or pressure causes the MOF to release what it is holding. More than 70,000 different MOFs have been produced to date for various applications.
12. Why is the Arizona desert mentioned in the second paragraph?
A. To introduce water harvesters. B. To stress the importance of water.
C. To express the urgent need for water there. D. To show its serious condition.
13. What plays a vital role in water harvesters?
A. Solar energy. B. Water molecules.
C. A small microwave oven. D. Metal-organic framework.
14. What does the underlined phrase "cling to" in paragraph 5 probably mean?
A. hold onto B. break down
C. give off D. turn into
15. What will probably be covered in the following paragraphs?
A. The future of the MOF technology. B. Other uses of the MOF technology.
C. The limitation of the MOF technology. D. The improvement of the MOF technology.

Possible version:
Dear Sir or Madam,
I'm Li Hua, a Senior Two student. I have read your advertisement for volunteers of the Sino-American Youth Ambassadors online Program. I'm writing to apply for participation in this activity.
I consider myself a qualified candidate for the several reasons. First of all, a good command of English will make it possible for me to communicate with foreign members fluently. Besides, I'm an outgoing person and have rich experience in voluntary jobs, which can help get along well with American friends in the program.
I would like to present the long history and diverse culture of China to our friends and also learn more about America and its people.
I would appreciate it if you could consider my application and accept me as a member of the program. Looking forward to your early reply.
Yours sincerely,
Li Hua
