I don’t remember being ordered to hug people when I was a child, but I remember being made to hold hands. It抯 not a big deal. And of course it抯 unavoidable for safety, but I remember disliking it. In the past, hugs were also something you couldn抰 refuse. Again, it didn抰 seem like a big deal at the time. There were circumstances(境况) in which it was polite to offer a hug or accept one. If you didn’t enjoy this, it was too bad.
However, this isn’t the case now. These days there’s something called bodily autonomy(身体自治权), which I know about thanks to a video. Now, I’ve learned that hugs are the subject of a small but fierce debate about parenting.
Kids hug each other. And sometimes, they knock each other down. Several years ago, a friend抯 two-year-old was sent home from a day care center with a note pointing out that he had hugged a friend and that the friend felt 搖ncomfortable. My friend and I laughed, thinking the other mother was overreacting. That抯 what I used to think.
There was a kid who hugged my kid and she didn抰 like it. This happened several times. He asked to give her a kiss and she rudely said no. A complaint came in from the kid抯 parent that her rudeness had hurt his feelings. And I made it clear that my daughter wasn抰 put on this Earth to comfort her needy son. She was protecting her son抯 feelings and I was protecting my daughter抯. I learned that this wasn抰 an overreaction.
But it struck home more deeply than I might have expected. I showed my daughter the video about bodily autonomy(身体自治权). It was a cartoon movie showing kids how to politely decline unwanted physical contact. A lot of parenting culture is fussy(大惊小怪的), but this felt different: a new way of socializing ---- particularly girl children ---- to expand the range of what they can politely refuse. I was satisfied with how great it felt.
21. What did the author use to think of children抯 being given hugs?
A. Reasonable.B.Abnormal.C.Unnecessary.D. Guilty
22. What will the author now consider first when it comes to kids hugging?
A.Her role in parenting.B.Her own child抯 feelings.
C.Parents social responsibility.D.Friendships between children.
23.What can children mainly learn from the video according to the author?
A.One should treat others fairly.B.Parenting culture is updated.
C.One has the right to say no.D.Physical contact is harmful.
B
When you want to hear music while you're out, you just put on the earphones and choose the song on an app and listen. You probably don't think too much about it. But a generation ago, if you wanted to listen to music, you very likely did it through a Sony Walkman, which made tapes portable(可携带的) .
In early 1979, Sony chairman Akio Morita invited engineers, planners and public people to a meeting to show off a modified version of a small-sized recorder used by journalists known as the Sony Pressman. “This is the product that will satisfy those young people who want to listen to music all day,” Morita told the group. “They'll take it everywhere with them, and if we put a playback-only headphone stereo(立体声音响) like this on the market, it'll be a hit.”
On July 1, 1979, Sony launched the blue and silver Walkman TPS-L2 in Japan and sold it for around 33, 000 yen, roughly $150 at the time. A year later, it came to the U.S. While some people who predicted this expensive device wouldn't sell because it didn't record, that first Walkman became a huge hit.50,000 devices were sold in two months. But more than that, it changed the way people listened to music.
揟he Walkman did a couple of things in one, tech historian Stewart Wolpin says. 揑t was so much easier to carry than previous tape-based portables. And more importantly, it came with stereo headphones designed for music. The music sounded like you'd brought your home stereo with you, and it was yours and yours only. The headphone stereo phenomena defined (定义) the free, some would say selfish,‘Me’ generation of the 1980s.
Through the years, Sony had brought out many versions of the Walkman: portable CD models, 揼um-stick攙ersions with a rechargeable battery and models that supported metal tapes.Sony eventually went with models that could handle MP3s as well, but it was late to the game.In the new century, the company relinquished the portable music throne(宝座) to Apple's iPod and iTunes.
Looking back,Sony kept the electronics business separate from the recording and film divisions.”This kept Sony from building an iTunes/iPod-like complete music player/music store solution.” Wolpin says. “Sony would have been the only competitor to Apple.” On its 40th anniversary, the Walkman is a faded brand, but one that still brings back mostly fond memories to a certain generation.
Why did Sony hold the meeting in early 1979?
A. To show how to use its new product.
B. To ask for advice on its new product.
C. To sell its new product at a high price.
D.To make its new product better known.
25.What can we learn about the first Walkman?
A.It turned out to be a big success at last.
B.Its function was doubted by many people.
C.It was ignored by American people at first.
D.It required further improvement to be popular.
26.What does Stewart Wolpin mainly want to tell us in Paragraph 4?
A.Advantages of the Walkman.
B.The history of the Me generation.
C.Disadvantages of tape-based portables.
D.The reason for headphone stereo phenomena.
27.What does the underlined word “relinquished” in Paragraph 5 most probably mean?
A. Challenged. B. Created. C. Deserted. D.Developed.

The coronavirus pandemic(冠状病毒流行病) is a terrible crisis,of course. But it also presents an opportunity to change the way that research is conducted and shared. The way that researchers respond to COVID-19 right now can serve as a blueprint for that future.Scientists publishing data, ideas and information relating to the coronavirus pandemic on ResearchGate,a professional network that advocates open research, push against the old patterns(模式) of scientific culture.
Researchers are far more likely to post early-stage research on the websites than we’ve traditionally seen in other industries. We’re seeing people publish shorter, briefer content, and more figures. It’s really exciting to see researchers upload more and more preprints(预印本).The urgency of this crisis encourages the global community of researchers to share more freely and work across industries, even as borders(边界) remain closed.
The way that research is confirmed and shares hasn’t changed much over the past decades,or perhaps the last century. We still rely on mysterious systems of peer review(同行评审),and the in-person conference is still a main means of knowledge exchange. The COVID-19 crisis is challenging both:one reason is that it is too slow (it can take six to nine months for a scientist抯 primary results to be peer-reviewed and appear in a journal),and the other,it is no longer safe.We need to try new ways to do things,in real time, and the ideas that work in this time of crisis will serve us well in the future.
At ResearchGate,we constantly work to improve scientific productivity to enable much-needed breakthroughs. This crisis encourages us to do our best to support researchers in becoming more efficient and more open.We need to connect with all the actors in science to further this change:funders, publishers, institutions and even nations need to come together and reimagine what science could be and how it could drive the development of better societies.
The future of science is surely international, interdisciplinary(跨学科的) and open.Through the COVID-19,efforts from some organizations stand out as leading the way,in bringing national donors, charities and companies together to solve problems. There are also many examples of interdisciplinary and international cooperation that give us hope for advancing a new culture of science.ResearchGate抯 own COVID-19 community page is designed to encourage interdisciplinary cooperation during the coronavirus pandemic.
The tools that we develop through the COVID-19 crisis must equip us to work together across borders to face future crises. Our collective(共同的) actions in the face of climate change, for instance, have been inadequate so far.Let’s use this crisis to learn how to make science better, and let’s continue these efforts beyond the crisis, together. This moment is an opportunity to pave new paths that we抣l follow tomorrow.
28. What can we learn from Paragraph 2?
A.Scientists often publish unfinished reports.
B.Scientists have worked across borders during the crisis.
C.Scientists share their research results more freely now.
D.Current research can抰 meet the needs of dealing with the crisis.
29. What does the author think of the peer review system?
A.It can take up a large amount of time.
B.It is a rare way of knowledge exchange.
C.It will play an important role in the future.
D.It is helpful in protecting significant research results.
30. What do the researchers expect of the future of science?
A.Scientists will make great progress in medicine.
B.Scientific reports will be produced more quickly.
C.It will value interdisciplinary and international cooperation.
D.Large institutions will lead the way in scientific breakthroughs.
31.What may be the best title for the text?
A.How does science affect our life?
B.How is COVID-19 changing science?
C.The role of science in conquering the COVID-19 crisis.
D.The tools that we develop through the COVID-19 crisis.

I looked out at the smiling faces packed into the school auditorium(礼堂). Flashes from cameras lit up in all directions. The applause filled my ears. I had done it. I had really done it.
Just a few months ago, I would never have pictured myself acting in a play in front of two hundred people. But when I stood on stage, I discovered I could do more than I ever gave myself credit for. I found a new person inside me, a much more daring, outgoing person who had been hidden all along, just waiting for the opportunity to appear. If not for one of my teachers, Mrs. Sather, I might never have found that opportunity.
In the first and second grade, I was extremely shy. I had friends, but it wasn抰 just in my personality to be very outgoing. And I wasn抰 very good at meeting new people. I was afraid I would do or say something wrong, so I just smiled and listened to other people抯 conversations.
I did well in school, though, and I loved to write. In my stories, I was never shy, In my writings, I could be myself and never have to worry about what other people think of me. My second - grade teacher, Mrs. Sather, always encouraged me to write more. I think she was the first person to see my inner strength.
One day, she announced that our class was going to perform a play, I抣l begin to cast everyone tomorrow, she said. 揘ow I need someone to be on stage to play the lead role of Dorothy. I shook my head, saying, 揃ut I was afraid of talking in front of people. She encouraged, 揙h, you can make it. Give it a try! Mrs. Sather looked into my eyes as if seeing my inner self locked away inside. 揗rs. Sather believed in me, I thought.
Paragraph 2:
I realized it was time to throw off my shyness. I looked at Mrs. Sather right in her blue eyes and said, 揙kay, I抣l try. Time passed quickly. It was time for us to give the show. Still, I was nervous, and my knees shook. 揑t doesn抰 matter how you do tonight, and you have already shown yourself how wonderful you are, said Mrs. Sather, as if reading my thoughts when she came backstage for a final check. I became less nervous and my confidence grew. In the end, my performance earned warm applause.

W: How much would you like for the desk?

W: You could sir, but you would have to hurry because that table has been booked again an hour
later. (4) Could you come at 7:00 p. m. instead?

W: We're lucky living here in China. There has never been one here.
M: Not for a long time. I think my grandfather survived one close to where we are now.

M: That would be most appreciated. The man I am building it for does not have a lot of money, and no family to take care of him.
W: That is a shame, and it's very nice of you to look after him.
M: He is a friend of my wife's uncle's, but he does not get out of his house very much, so I want him to have somewhere he can relax.

W: Don't you remember? It's the one about the atom.
M: Like the atom bomb?
W: No, it's about how they function. I have suggested a new theory which scientists all around the world are now accepting.
M: I know, I'm just teasing. Will I understand it?Is it very technical?(16)
W: It is, but there are pictures to help explain it.(16)
M: Good. I find I absorb information better if there are visual aids to help.(16)
W: I can also explain it to you in simple terms if it doesn't make sense.
M: Now I feel stupid.
W: No, you're very smart, but this is a very specialist field and not everyone will understand it straight away.
M: Well, I' m glad I have you to help me grasp it.
Text 10
As I look over all now, graduates of this grand university, you remind me of myself and my friends. I first came here 40 years ago with the intention of becoming a lawyer. (18) As I have learned, and as you will learn, you can have the very best intentions, but sometimes things do not work out the way you want them to be. I ended up studying theater and becoming an actor, (19) and I also studied history. I am not going to bore you with my dynamic career spread over 25 films. I assume you all have seen my films. Your teachers certainly have. But becoming a well-known figure allowed me to bring attention to worthy causes and help people in need, far more than if I had become a lawyer. So just because you have graduated in one subject, do not be afraid to take a different path if it feels like the right thing to do, even if it is 5 or 10 years down the line. And one last piece of advice before I let you go and celebrate: Keep in touch with the friends you have made here.(20)
