Paul Nicklen waited patiently on the ice in the Arctic (北极). He was there to take pictures for?National Geographic?(《国家地理》). Finally, he saw something big and white. It was a polar bear (北极熊), swimming towards food in the icy water.????????
Nicklen lay down on the ice to get a better photo. The swimming bear climbed onto an ice floe (浮冰). Unluckily, it broke, and the bear fell back into the water. The polar bear couldn't find a meal, and had to swim farther away to find food.
Polar bears need ice to hunt seals (猎取海豹) — their favourite meal. They stand on the ice floes, and wait for the seals to come up for air. However, because of global warming (全球变暖), Arctic temperatures are rising and polar ice is melting (融化). As polar ice melts, polar bears have to swim farther to find ice floes. Sometimes, bears have to swim more than 200 kilometres to find an ice floe. Some bears cannot swim that far and, sadly, they die in the water.
On his last trip, Nicklen saw three polar bear bodies. Before global warming influences the?Arctic, a dead polar bear is hardly seen. Wildlife experts (野生动物专家) think that global warming will have a terrible influence on polar bears. In the future, polar ice will continue to melt. Some scientists believe that about two-thirds of the world's polar bears will disappear by 2050.

For some people, choosing to be scared (惊吓的) can be fun. Dr Margee Kerr does research on fear (害怕). She tries to find out what scares people and why and loves to scare herself as part of her research. She says she has the best job in the world.
“Some people like to be scared because they like the way their body changes,” she says. “Think of how excited you are when you're going to a birthday party. Some feel the same when they watch a scary movie or visit a haunted house.”
Fear is also a tool that the brain (大脑) uses to keep the body safe. It urges (敦促) a person to hide, run away, or protect oneself. For example, babies don't understand what might hurt them. As babies grow, they learn what's not safe, and their brains store those memories. Then their brains use fear to warn them of dangers. “We don't want to be fearless,” Dr Kerr says. “It's good to have a healthy sense of what's dangerous!”
Many people have beaten their own fears. One method: instead of listening to their imagination, they learn the facts about anything that seems scary. Knowledge can help a person feel less afraid.
Dr Kerr grew up on a farm. As a seven-year-old, she was scared of black bears in the forest. Later, she read about them. “Understanding the facts gave me a sense of confidence,” she says. “I knew for sure what to do if I ever met a bear and how to protect myself.”?

Ants had many enemies. Not only were most of the birds their enemies, but anteaters and centipedes attacked (食蚁兽和蜈蚣袭击) them all the time and everywhere when they had the chance. So a few ants decided to hold a meeting. They hoped to find a good place to hide when attacked by birds and animals.
But at the meeting, their opinions were quite different. Some hoped that they should all go into a small hole in the ground and live there; some wanted to have a large and strong house built on the ground, where nobody could enter but an ant; others wanted to live in trees to stay away from anteaters, forgetting completely that there they would be the prey (猎物) of birds.
The Red-ants spent days building their house on the ground and lived under it, but anteaters knocked it down in a minute. The Rice-ants lived under the ground, but no matter when they came out, anteaters visited them and took them out. The Wagtail-ants hid into the trees, but there sat centipedes waiting for them, or the birds caught them quickly.
When the Insect-king (昆虫之王) heard that they failed to reach an agreement, he sent them the secret of unity (团结), and the message of work-together. But unluckily he chose the beetle (甲虫) for his messenger (信使), and he never arrived at the ants. So it is still a big problem facing the ants today.
