Joe moved to?Canada?with his family at the age of 41. There were many difficult days for them in the beginning. Since Joe had no job, the savings (存款) they brought with them were?diminishing?quickly.
One day, Joe went out to look for a job. As he walked, he saw many things on the street that people threw away on garbage (垃圾) day — TVs, washing machines and fridges. Joe could not believe his eyes. “Why would people throw away such things?” he asked himself. Joe saw a “new” television and decided to take it home to see what the problem was.
Since he was twelve years old, Joe's main hobby has been electronics. As a teenage (十几岁的) boy, he began to repair radios, TVs and so on.
Joe brought the television home and turned it on. There were pictures on the screen, but there was no sound. He opened the back cover. Before long, Joe found the problem. The loudspeaker (扬声器) was broken. He went out again. Among the garbage on the street, he found a toy piano. He carried the piano home. Luckily its loudspeaker worked. Fifteen minutes later, Joe had a TV with both pictures and sound.
Joe began to question people about why they were throwing away electronics. The answer was the same from everyone: getting them repaired was too expensive. People would rather (宁愿) buy new products.

We know people can be nice, but what about animals? Scientists say that some animals can act nicely, even when they don't have to.
Most people usually walk away when someone is unkind to them. Marc Bekoff, a researcher at the University of Colorado, saw a red fox (狐狸) do just?that. The fox was unhappy because another fox didn't play nicely with her. When she walked away, the other fox showed her that he wanted to play by lowering his head and rolling (原地打转) on his back. Then he got another chance, and this time, he played more nicely.

An elephant in Kenya hurt his trunk (象鼻) and couldn't put food into his mouth. Researcher Kayhan Ostovar watched silently. He saw that elephant show his sore (疼痛的) trunk to a healthy elephant. The healthy elephant didn't need any more information. He took some leaves and put them carefully into his friend's mouth.
Hippos and crocodiles (河马和鳄鱼) are usually good friends. They hang out (闲逛) together in rivers. But Karen Paolillo, a wildlife expert (野生动物专家) in Zimbabwe, saw something surprising. When Solomon was about ten years old, his father and some friends planned a picnic in the forest and hired (租借) a large car to take them there. They were to set out at seven in the morning. Solomon knew this, as he had heard his father say so the night before.
The sun was shining very brightly when he awoke (醒来) at six the next morning, but he was as lazy as ever. “If I get up about ten minutes before seven,” he said, “I shall be down in plenty of time.” So he lay quietly in bed, and heard all his family pass his door as they went downstairs.
They even called to him, but he gave no answer. At last, up he jumped, dressed, and ran downstairs, but he found nobody in the room and the car was gone!
He ran as fast as he could down the road, but there was a strong wind, and there were clouds of dust (灰尘) everywhere. He shouted for the car to stop, but no one could hear him. At last, tired with running, he walked sadly home.
This gave Solomon a lesson. He was no longer lazy and grew up to be a quick and successful man.
