Passenger
pigeons
(旅鸽)once
flew
over
much
of
the
United
States
in
unbelievable
numbers.
Written
accounts
from
the
18th
and
19th
centuries
described
flocks
(群)
so
large
that
they
darkened
the
sky
for
hours.
It
was
calculated
that
when
its
population
reached
its
highest
point,
they
were
more
than
3
billion
passenger
pigeons

a
number
equal
to
24
to
40
percent
of
the
total
bird
population
in
the
United
States,
making
it
perhaps
the
most
abundant
bird
in
the
world.
Even
as
late
as
1870
when
their
numbers
had
already
become
smaller,
a
flock
believed
to
be
1
mile
wide
and
320
miles
(about
515
kilometers)
long
was
seen
near
Cincinnati.
Sadly
the
abundance
of
passenger
pigeons
may
have
been
their
undoing.
Where
the
birds
were
most
abundant,
people
believed
there
was
an
ever-lasting
supply
and
killed
them
by
the
thousands.
Commercial
hunters
attracted
them
to
small
clearings
with
grain,
waited
until
pigeons
had
settled
to
feed,
then
threw
large
nets
over
them,
taking
hundreds
at
a
time.
The
birds
were
shipped
to
large
cities
and
sold
in
restaurants.
By
the
closing
decades
of
the
19th
century,
the
hardwood
forests
where
passenger
pigeons
nested
had
been
damaged
by
American’s
need
for
wood,
which
scattered
(驱散)
the
flocks
and
forced
the
birds
to
go
farther
north,
where
cold
temperatures
and
spring
storms
contributed
to
their
decline.
Soon
the
great
flocks
were
gone,
never
to
be
seen
again.
In
1897,
the
state
of
Michigan
passed
a
law
prohibiting
the
killing
of
passenger
pigeons,
but
by
then,
no
sizable
flocks
had
been
seen
in
the
state
for
10
years.
The
last
confirmed
wild
pigeon
in
the
United
States
was
shot
by
a
boy
in
Pike
County,
Ohio,
in
1900.
For
a
time,
a
few
birds
survived
under
human
care.
The
last
of
them,
known
affectionately
as
Martha,
died
at
the
Cincinnati
Zoological
Garden
on
September
1,
1914.
24.
In
the
18th
and
early
19
th
centuries,
passenger
pigeons
________.
A.
were
the
largest
bird
population
in
the
US
B.
lived
mainly
in
the
south
of
America
C.
did
great
harm
to
the
natural
environment
D.
were
the
biggest
bird
in
the
world
25.
The
underlined
word
“undoing”
in
paragraph
3
probably
refers
to
the
pigeons’
________.
A.
escape
B.
liberation
C.
ruin
D.
evolution
26.
What
was
the
main
reason
for
people
to
kill
passenger
pigeons?
A.
To
seek
pleasure.
B.
To
make
money.
C.
To
protect
crops.
D.
To
save
other
birds.
C
Scientists
at
Israel’s
Tel
Aviv
University
say
they
have
created
the
world’s
first
3D-printed
heart
with
human
tissue
and
blood
vessels.
Although
the
organ
is
only
as
big
as
a
rabbit’s
heart,
the
researchers
are
hoping
the
technology
could
one
day
be
developed
enough
to
help
human
patients
in
need
of
a
heart
transplant.
Lead
researcher
Tal
Dvir
said
that
while
other
scientists
have
managed
to
3D-print
the
structure
of
a
heart
in
the
past,
this
is
the
first
time
anyone
has
printed
an
entire
heart.
“Our
results
demonstrate
the
potential
of
our
approach
for
engineering
personalized
tissue
and
organ
replacement
in
the
future,”
Dvir
said
in
a
press
statement.
Scientists
used
fatty
tissue
taken
from
human
patients
to
create
the
heart.
Some
material
in
the
tissue
was
reprogrammed
to
become
stem
cells.
The
remaining
material
was
processed
into
a
hydrogel.
They
used
the
hydrogel
as
a
printing:
“ink”.
This
method
plays
a
key
role
in
removing
the
risk
that
the
implant
will
be
rejected
by
the
patient’s
body.
The
team’s
next
step
is
to
cultivate
the
organs
in
a
lab
and
to
teach
them
how
to
“behave”
like
hearts.
Dvir’s
3D-printed
hearts
can
currently
contract,
but
the
cells
still
need
to
develop
a
pumping
ability.
His
team
eventually
plans
to
test
the
hearts
in
animals.
“Maybe,
in
ten
years,
there
will
be
organ
printers
in
the
finest
hospitals
around
the
world,
and
these
procedures
will
be
conducted
routinely,”Dvir
said.
Heart
disease
is
the
leading
cause
of
death
for
both
men
and
women,
according
to
the
Centers
for
Disease
Control
and
Prevention.
About
610,000
people
die
of
this
disease
in
America
every
year─amounting
to
about
1
in
every
4
deaths.
There
are
currently
more
than
3,
700
people
waiting
for
a
heart
transplant
in
the
United
States,
according
to
data
from
the
United
States
Department
of
Health
and
Human
Services.
27.
What
is
the
purpose
of
creating
the
3D-printed
heart?
A.
To
connect
hospitals
with
universities
B.
To
develop
3
D-printed
technology.
C.
To
study
the
hearts
of
rabbits.
D.
To
help
patients
receive
a
new
heart.
28.
What
is
Paragraph
3
mainly
about?
A.
The
procedures
of
the
research.
B.
The
importance
of
the
research.
C.
The
method
of
the
3D-printed
heart.
D.
The
material
of
the
3D-printed
heart.
29.
Why
does
the
author
mention
the
current
situation
of
heart
disease
patients?
A.
To
appeal
to
hospitals
to
reduce
medical
fees.
B.
To
explain
the
main
reason
for
heart
disease.
C.
To
show
the
need
to
advance
the
new
technology.
D.
To
urge
researchers
to
develop
effective
medical
devices.

During
the
war,
my
husband
was
stationed

an
army

in
a
desert
in
California.
I
went
to
live
there
in
order
to
be

I
hated
the

I
had
never
31
been
so
unhappy.
My

I
was

I
breathed,

I
was

myself
that
I
wrote
to
my
parents.
I
told
them
I
was
35
and
coming
back
home.
I
said
I
couldn’t
stand
it
one
minute
longer.
I
36
be
in

My
father
answered
my
37
with
just
two
lines

two
lines
that
will
always
sing
in
my
38

two
lines
that
completely
changed
my
life:
Two
men
looked
out
from
prison
bars
One
saw
the

the
other
saw
the
stars
I
read
those
two
lines
39
,

I
was

myself.
I
made
up
my
mind
I
would

I

me.
They

me

of
their
favorite
artworks
which
they
had
42
to

to

I
studied
the
delightful
forms
of
the
cactus.
I
watched
for
the
desert
sunsets,
and
43
for
seashells
that
had
been
left
there
millions
of
years
ago
when
the
desert
had
been
an
ocean

What
brought
about
this
45
change
in
me?
The
desert
hadn’t
changed,
46
I
had.
I
had
changed
my
47
.
And
by
doing
so,
I
changed
an
unhappy
experience
into
the
most
unforgettable
48
of
my
life.
I
was
excited
by
this
new
world
where
I
discovered
I
had
looked
out
of
my
self-created
prison
and
49
the
stars.

Kids'

steps

stress

Everybody
gets
stressed
from
time
to
time.
50
.
Some
ways
of
dealing
with
stress—like
screaming
or
hitting
someone—don't
solve
much.
But
other
ways,like
talking
to
someone
you
trust,
can
lead
you
to
solving
your
problem
or
at
least
feeling
better.
Try
taking
these
four
steps
the
next
time
you
are
stressed:
Get
support.
When
you
need
help,
reach
out
to
the
people
who
care
about
you.
Talk
to
a
trusted
adult,
such
as
a
parent
or
other
relatives.
51
.They
might
have
had
similar
problems,
such
as
dealing
with
a
test,
or
the
death
of
a
beloved
pet.
Don't
take
it
out
on
yourself(不要把什么事情都往自己身上揽).
Sometimes
when
kids
are
stressed
and
upset,
they
take
it
out
on
themselves.
Oh,
dear,
that's
not
a
good
idea.
Remember
that
there
are
always
people
to
help
you.
Don't
take
it
out
on
yourself.

Try
to
solve
the
problem.

第二节
读后续写(共1题,满分25分)
阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
On
Christmas
Eve,
seventy-three-year-old
George
selected
his
food
carefully.
Skim
milk
was
$2.99,
white
bread
89
cents
with
a
10-cent
discount.
Leaving
the
cashier,
he
calculated
that
he
had
saved
80
cents
today.
At
the
exit,
the
wind
reminded
him
of
his
gloves.
“Where
are
they?”
Not
in
the
coat
pockets.
Not
in
the
grocery
bag
either.
He
was
sure
he
was
wearing
them
when
he
entered
the
store.
He
clearly
remembered
putting
them
into
the
pocket
of
this
coat.
George
made
a
second
thorough
search
of
all
his
pockets,
again
including
the
grocery
bag.
Now
he
was
sure
they
must
have
been
dropped
somewhere
inside
the
store.
Old
George
had
bought
the
black
leather
gloves
at
a
25%discount,
for
just
$35.00
ten
years
ago.
They
were
soft
and
warm
and
very
durable.
He
had
taken
care
not
to
let
a
drop
of
water
or
rain
touch
his
expensive
gloves,
so
they
looked
like
new.
Losing
this
favorite
possession
was
almost
like
losing
a
child
to
him.
George,calm
on
the
outside
but
nervous
inside,re-entered
the
store.He
followed
the
same
route
he
had
walked
before,
starting
at
the
bread
counter,
to
the
milk
section,the
corner
where
salt
and
sugar
were
placed,then
the
rest
of
the
store.Several
minutes
of
anxious
searching
turned
out
to
be
in
vain.
He
asked
the
customers
whether
they
saw
a
pair
of
black
leather
gloves,
but
they
said
no.
Then
he
went
over
to
the
cashier
without
hesitation
to
ask
if
she
had
received
any
lost
gloves,
but
only
received
the
same
answer.
His
heart
grew
heavier.
“Society
has
changed,
people
have
changed,”
he
murmured
to
himself.
“Years
ago,
if
somebody
picked
up
something
lost,
they
would
give
it
back.
Now
a
good
action
is
lost.

Yet
he
did
not
give
up
hope.
He
started
to
stare
at
anybody
wearing
black
gloves
to
see
if
they
looked
like
his.
The
first
two
persons
he
saw
did
wear
gloves,
but
one
was
women’s
and
the
other
not
black.

Dear
Mrs.

I’m
glad
to
write
to
share
with
you
my
happiness
of
being
admitted
to
college,
which
I
have
been
dreaming
of.
Firstly,
I’d
like
to
express
my
gratitude
for
your
excellent
teaching
and
your
care
as
well
as
love
for
me!
Thank
you
for
your
encouraging
words,
which
never

to
brighten
my
way

It’s
you
who
cheered
me
up.
Never
will
I
forget
what
you
said--
doors

to
the
very
man
with
full
confidence
and
instant
action.
Without
your
help,
I
could
never
have
enjoyed
such
a
joyful
harvest.
And
I
really
appreciate
your
instruction.
I
wish
more
and
more
of
your

could
go

colleges.
Are
you
still

How
I
miss

my
beloved

Abrupt

it
might

George

there

a

On

He

to

Hello,
this
is
the

M:
Hi,
can
I
visit
your
museum
after

afternoon?
W:
It
depends,
sir.
We
open
at

close

on
weekdays
but
on
Sundays
we
close
two

earlier.

It’s

I

W:
No,
I
don’t
eat
meat.
I’m
a
vegetarian.
M:
You
should
come
with
me,
anyway.
The
restaurant
I’m
heading
to
sells
amazing
vegetarian
food.

M:
Yes,
but
I
suggest
you
not
take
a
bus
or
drive
there.
You
will
be
stuck
in
a
traffic

at
weekends
on
this

The

easy

fast.
W:
OK.
Thank

Have
you

I

the

M:
No.
W:
Why?
You
took
Chinese
in
high
school,
didn’t
you?
M:
I’d
be
all
right
if
they
only
required
a

of
it.
But
you

I
have

W:

M:
Mm,
I

I
know
it’s
not
much
of
a
hobby
but
I
don’t

W:
What
are
your
favorite

M:
I
like
thrillers.
That’s
my
favorite.
W:
Oh,
I’m
no
good
with
those.
They’re
too
frightening.
I
don’t

any
of
them
because
I
have
my
hands

my

M:
So
what
are
your
favorite
hobbies,
Rebecca?
W:
I
want

I’m

My

my

do
anything
except
for
the
salad
and
the
drinks.
That
includes
all
the

Wow.
It
sounds
like
they
take
Turkey

pretty
seriously.
M:
Listen,
if
Thanksgiving
were
an
Olympic
sport,
they
would
be
kicked
out
for

many
gold

What
about
you?

I

W:
Good!
Me
too!
By
the

you

Didn’t
I?
I’m
doing

Really?
That’s

Are
you

M:
Maybe.
I
was
born
in

My
parents
are
in

She’s

Her

she

W:
Wow,
both

M:
Yes,
we
do.
What
about

W:
Well,
I’m
studying
law.
M:
Great!
So
I

last

we

W:
Don’t

I

M:
Good.
Oh,
it’s
already
lunchtime.
What
would
you

W:
The

They

M:
I

W:What

M:
Great.
Well,

Growing
crops
in
containers
saves
water.
It
needs
little
fertilizer(肥料).
In
addition,
the
chemicals
cannot
run
off
into
nearby
waterways.
The
same
earth
mixture
can
be
used
for
five
or
six
years.
Since
Earth
Boxes
went
on
sale
in
1994,
many
people
around
the
world
have
used
them.
Other
people
have
made
their
own
vegetable
growing
boxes.
Some
use
two
large
plastic
containers.
One
container
has
holes
in
the
bottom
and
sits
inside
the
other
box.
Earth
mixture
goes
into
the
top
container,
and
water
goes
through
a
tube
into
the
bottom
box.
A
plastic
trash
bag
is
then
used
to
cover
the
top
container.
Some
people
think
this
kind
of
gardening
will
be
important
to
people
in
poor
countries
where
hunger
is
a
problem.
A
lot
of
food
can
be
grown
in
a
small
space
for
a
small
amount
of
money.
The
people
who
make
Earth
Boxes
are
interested
in
educating
young
people.
They
have
developed
a
program
aimed
at
teaching
students
science
and
agriculture.
When
children
first
enter
elementary
school,
they
learn
about
water,
soil,
light,
and
nutrition.
In
middle
school,
they
do
experiments
and
collect
information.
In
high
school,
they
learn
how
to
use
math
to
better
understand
what
happens
when
plants
grow.
The
learning
program
includes
written
materials
for
teachers
and
students.
And
it
uses
an
Earth
Box
in
the
classroom
as
a
small
laboratory
for
experiments.
