When
my
father
was
getting
ready
for
work,
our
house
was
ruled
by
knocks
and
words.
He
used
to
come
downstairs
to
breakfast.
The
morning
paper
lay
beside
his
plate.
He
always
read
the
“Deaths”
first,
and
then
he
knocked
once
on
the
table.
One
of
my
sisters
brought
his
bread,
already
buttered
for
him.
Usually
he
said
nothing,
but
once
I
heard
him
say,
“I
love
you
very
much,
Edith.
I
would
love
more
if
you
buttered
my
bread
on
both
sides.”
He
read
the
paper
all
through
breakfast.
Two
knocks
on
the
table
meant
“I
am
ready
for
my
tea.”
If
a
single
knock
followed
that
meant,
“More
bread,
please.”
After
breakfast
he
said,
“Boots.”
The
paper
was
spread
(展开)
for
him
over
the
back
of
an
arm?chair.
Yesterday's
paper
was
put
on
the
chair
for
his
feet,
and
his
boots
were
brought
to
him,
freshly
cleaned.
He
read
standing
at
the
same
time
putting
on
his
boots.
With
one
boot
finished
he
said,
“Bus.”
At
that
point
one
of
the
girls
went
outside
to
the
garden
gate
and
waited
there.
Her
job
was
to
stop
a
bus
when
it
came.
It
came
early
sometimes
and
it
had
to
wait
for
my
father.
“Overcoat,
hat.”
One
of
my
sisters
had
already
brushed
his
overcoat.
Now
she
held
it
open
for
him.
Another
girl
came
with
his
hat,
nicely
brushed.“Handkerchief,
pipe
(烟斗).”
They
were
brought
and
put,
with
his
tobacco
(烟草),
into
his
pocket.
He
looked
out
of
the
window
and
said
either
“Walking
stick”
or
“Umbrella”.
It
was
handed
to
him.
Ready
now,
he
was
still
reading
the
paper.
He
didn't
put
it
down
until
he
heard
the
shout
“Bus
coming!

Then
he
kissed
my
mother
and
went
out.
The

freely.
How
lucky

a
wife

five
daughters
at
home!

New
research
from
Princeton
University
in
New
Jersey
found
something
else
special
about
how
adults—in
this
case
mothers—speak
to
their
very
young
children.
“We
found
for
the
first
time
that
mothers
shift
their
timbre,”said
Elise
Piazza,
a
postdoctoral
researcher
at
Princeton
University.
Piazza
added,“Timbre
is
best
explained
as
the
unique
quality
of
a
sound.
Barry_White's_silky_voice_sounds_different_from_Tom_Waits'_poor_one—even_if_they're_singing_the_same_note.

Using
special
equipment,
Piazza
and
other
Princeton
researchers
found
that
mothers
shared
similar
changes
in
timbre
when
speaking
to
babies.
The
researchers
tried
to
record
the
sounds
mothers
used
with
their
babies
at
home.
“We
chose
to
record
mothers
playing
with
and
reading
to
their
own
babies
just
like
they
would
at
home,”
Piazza
said.
She
wanted
the
discussions
to
be
as
natural
as
possible.
The
research
offers
new
ways
to
show
differences
between
how
adults
speak
to
babies,
compared
to
fellow
adults.
The
research
was
not
limited
just
to
English
speakers.
Researchers
listened
to
discussions
in
seven
other
languages:
Mandarin,
Polish,
Russian,
Spanish,
Cantonese,
German,
and
French.
Piazza
said
the
research
provides
more
information
besides
what
is
mentioned
above.
For
example,
she
said,
it
could
include
how
people
change
their
timbre
when
speaking
to
friends
or
managers
at
work;
how
candidates
speak
to
voters;
and
how
people
speak
to
their
boyfriends,
girlfriends
or
spouses
(配偶).
The
Princeton
research
follows
earlier
research
on
baby
talk.
In
2014,
researchers
from
the
University
of
Washington
and
University
of
Connecticut
looked
at
thousands
of
verbal
discussions
between
parents
and
babies.
They
compared
regular
speaking
voices
and
baby
talk.
Patricia
K.
Kuhl,
a
co?director
of
the
University
of
Washington,
said
researchers
found
that
use
of
baby
talk
led
to
better
early
language
development.
28.What
can
we
infer
from
the
underlined
sentence
in
Paragraph

can't
change
their
sound
quality.

White
has
a
better
voice
than
Tom
Waits.

sound
quality
varies
from
person
to
person.

sounds
appear
differently
with
the
same
loudness.

does
the
research
show
according
to

with
others.

people
speak
in
different
situations.
C.How
timbre
improves
in

D
On
January
13,2016,
France
became
the
first
country
in
the
world
to
pass
a
law
requiring
supermarkets
to
donate
food
that
is
approaching
its
expiration
date
(保质期)
instead
of
throwing
it
away.
The
regulation
that
applies
to
supermarkets
over
4,000
square
feet
requires
stores
to
sign
official
donation
agreements
with
local
food
banks.
The
law
also
makes
it
illegal
for
stores
to
pour
water
over
nearly?expired
food,
or
store
it
inside
locked
warehouses
until
it
is
picked
up
by
the
garbage
trucks.
These
measures
are
often
undertaken
by
supermarkets
to
prevent
the
hungry
from
searching
for
food
through
the
dustbins.
Though
that
may
appear
cruel,
the
stores
claim
they
do
it
to
avoid
potential
food
poisoning
that
could
occur
if
the
product
is
on
its
way
past
its
expiry.
Those
who
do
not
obey
the
new
law
face
the
risk
of
heavy
fines.
Also,excess
goods
like
yogurt
or
milk
that
are
likely
to
go
bad
quickly
are
now
allowed
to
be
donated
directly
to
the
food
banks.
Though
this
has
always
been
possible,
the
current
process
is
long
and
complex,
making
it
difficult
for
producers
to
give
away
the
food
in
a
timely
manner.
France's
food
banks
are
of
course
thrilled
about
the
possibility
of
receiving
extra
food.
Jacques
Bailet,
who
heads
a
network
of
French
food
banks
called
the
Banques
Alimentaires,
says
that
of
the
110,000
tons
of
goods
received
annually,
only
36,000
tons
come
from
supermarkets.
Bailet
estimates
(估计)
that
just
a
15%
increase
in
supermarket
donations
would
translate
to
over
10
million
additional
meals
to
feed
the
hungry
each
year.
Though
this
is
a
great
first
step,
Arash
Dermabarsh,
the
activist
responsible
for
the
grassroots
movement
that
led
to
the
ban,
is
not
done.
He
now
wants
to
extend
the
law
to
other
places
like
restaurants
and
also
try
to
convince
other
countries
in
the
European
Union
to
pass
similar
regulations.
These
steps
are
necessary
because
of
the
over
9
million
tons
of
food
wasted
in
France;
an
astonishing
67%
is
thrown
away
by
consumers,
with
supermarkets
and
restaurants
making
up
the
rest.
32.What
should
stores
do
with
nearly?expired
food?
A.Throw
it
away.
B.Send
it
to
the
hungry.
C.Store
it
in
refrigerators.
D.Give
it
away
to
food
banks.
33.What
does
the
underlined
word
“excess”
in
Paragraph
4
probably
mean?
A.Extra.
B.Cheap.
C.Seasonal.
D.Returned.
34.What
might
Bailet
agree
with
about
the
French
food
banks?
A.They
have
a
lot
of
expired
food.
B.They
will
get
much
benefit
from
the
law.
C.Their
food
is
enough
for
the
people
in
need.
D.Their
food
mainly
comes
from
supermarkets.
35.What
does
Dermabarsh
plan
to
do?
A.Build
more
food
banks
in
France.
B.Make
the
law
take
effect
in
more
places.
C.Launch
a
campaign
to
promote
this
law.
D.Raise
consumers'
awareness
of
waste
reduction.

After
a
year
of
preparing
herself,
Laura
Dekker
has
been
given
permission
to
sail
around
the
world.
“I
was
so
happy
that
I
almost
jumped
into
the
water,”
Laura
said,
after
learning
of
the
court's
decision.
The
14?year?old
was
born
on
a
ship
in
the
South
Pacific,
and
currently
lives
with
her
father
on
a
boat.
When
child
protection
agencies
heard
about
her
plan
to
sail
alone,
they
took
the
case
to
court
and
prevented
her
from
making
such
a
dangerous
voyage.
Since
the
decision,
though,
Laura
had
been
preparing
with
her
father
to
convince
the
court
that
she
was
ready.
Later
on,
she
received
the
books
and
other
materials
she
would
need
for
school
while
she
was
at
sea.
She
added
safety
equipment
to
a
new,
big
boat.
And
she
took
first
aid
courses
to
learn
survival
skills,
like
how
to
put
out
fires
on
the
boat,
take
care
of
her
own
injuries
and
deal
with
lack
of
sleep.
She
also
planned
a
safer
course—adding
alternate
routes
to
avoid
pirate
attacks,
and
planning
a
course
that
would
have
her
on
dry
land
as
she
moved
from
port
to
port
across
the
globe.
Even
with
all
of
the
added
preparations,
the
trip
still
has
its
risks.
In
early
June,
16?year?old
Abby
Sunderland,
an
American,
had
to
give
up
her
attempt
to
become
the
youngest
sailor
to
travel
around
the
world.
The
mask
of
her
boat
broke
due
to
rough
waters
in
the
Indian
Ocean,
and
she
was
rescued
by
a
French
fishing
ship.
Laura
plans
to
take
longer
than
Abby
for
her
voyage,
and
is
using
a
larger
and
more
stable
boat.
If
she
finishes
successfully
in
less
than
two
years,
she
will
take
the
title
from
the
current
record?holder
Jessica
Watson,
of
Australia,
who
was
16
when
she
completed
the
journey.

and
hike
to
the
top
of
Mount

Tallac的山顶是观赏烟火的最佳地点,故B项正确。
22.答案与解析:C 细节理解题。根据第三段中的“kid?friendly
activities
and
live
entertainment和Unfortunately
the
pony
rides
and
face
painting
are
only
for
the

parades
to
shame”可知,乔治亚洲人认为他们的国庆游行会让其他的游行相形见绌,由此可知,乔治亚洲人认为他们的游行是最好的,故A项正确。
B
【语篇解读】 这是一篇记叙文。文章讲述了父亲上班之前吃饭和准备出门的情景,父亲总是不停地让她们做事情,而且他的命令仅限于几个字,甚至敲几下桌子。他的态度让一家人非常谨慎,他离开家后大家都松了口气,借此说明父亲是家庭的中心。
24.答案与解析:A 推理判断题。根据第三段的“He
always
read
the
‘Deaths’
first,
and
then
he
knocked
once
on
the
table.
One
of
my
sisters
brought
his
bread,
already
buttered
for
him.”(他总是先读death,然后在桌子上敲一下。我的一个姐姐就把涂好了黄油的面包拿给他)可推测,作者父亲在桌子上敲一下的意思是他准备吃早饭了。A.his
breakfast
should
begin(他的早餐应该开始了)符合以上说法,故选A项。
25.答案与解析:C 推理判断题。根据文章第三至五段的内容,尤其是第五段的“The
girls
breathed
freely.”(女孩们都松了一口气)可知,作者的父亲早上一直在读报纸,他的五个女儿忙着为他准备早饭、拿鞋子、准备好烟斗和烟草、手杖或是雨伞,以及出门为他等车。每个孩子都有自己的任务,而且在他上班前必须按部就班准时完成,所以当父亲走后她们都感觉很轻松。C.each
of
them
had
to
start
and
finish
her
job
just
on
time(她们每个人都必须准时开始以及结束自己的任务)符合以上说法,故选C项。
26.答案与解析:B 推理判断题。根据第三段的“He
read
the
paper
all
through
breakfast.”(他早饭时一直在看报纸)和第五段的“Ready
now,
he
was
still
reading
the
paper.
He
didn't
put
it
down
until
he
heard
the
shout
‘Bus
coming!’”
(现在一切都准备好了,他依然还在读报纸。直到听到有人大喊“公交车来了”他才会把报纸放下)可推测,作者的父亲非常喜欢读报。B.Reading
newspaper.(读报)
27.答案与解析:A 推理判断题。根据文章的主要内容,尤其是倒数第二段的“Then
he
kissed
my
mother
and
went
out.
The
girls
breathed
freely.”(他亲吻我的妈妈然后出门。女孩们都松了口气)和最后一段“How
