B
Stephen
Wamukota,
a
nine-year-old
from
Mukwa
village
in
Western
Kenya,
is
making
headlines
worldwide
for
his
creative
hand
washing
machine.
The
young
boy
came
up
with
the
idea
after
watching
villagers,
who
do
not
have
easy
access
to
running
water
and
struggle
to
find
an
effective
way
to
wash
their
hands
to
avoid
spreading
and
catching
COVID-19,
Using
the
few
resources
he
could
get
-
wood,
nails,
and
a
bucket
-
Stephen
designed
and
built
a
simple
but
functional
washing
station.
The
clever
creation,
which
is
made
up
of
two
pedals
(踏扳)---one
to
release
soap
and
the
other
to
release
water

enables
villagers
to
wash
their
hands
contact-free,
thus
reducing
the
risk
of
catching
the
infectious
disease.
“I
had
bought
some
pieces
of
wood
to
make
a
window
frame,
but
when
I
came
back
home
after
work
one
day,
I
found
that
Stephen
had
made
the
machine,“
his
father,
James,
told
the
media.
"The
concept
was
his,
and
I
helped
tighten
the
machine.
I'm
very
proud."
James
credits
Stephen's
building
skill
to
the
village
school's
curriculum
(课程),which
teaches
children
to
construct
items
from
a
very
young
age.
The
invention,
which
went
viral
after
James
posted
a
photo
online,
has
made
Stephen
an
instant
celebrity
in
Kenya.
In
early
June
2020,
the
country's
leader
gave
Stephen
the
Uzalendo
Award
for
making
significant
contributions
towards
the
nation's
fight
against
COVID-19.
Stephen
has
also
been
promised
a
full
scholarship
to
a
school
that
can
develop
his
creative
talent,
by
the
county
governor.
Though
thrilled
at
the
unexpected
fame
and
success,
Stephen
is
not
satisfied
with
what
he
has
achieved.
The
young
boy
has
already
built
another
hand
washing
machine
and
plans
on
adding
several
more.
24.
What
inspired
Stephen
to
design
the
hand
washing
machine?
A.
The
school
project
he
was
working
on.
B.
The
few
resources
he
could
use
in
his
house.
C.
The
difficulty
the
villagers
had
keeping
their
hands
clean.
D.
The
number
of
the
villagers
getting
infected
with
the
disease.
25.
What's
the
original
function
of
the
pieces
of
wood?
A.
To
start
a
fire
to
cook
meals.
B.
To
make
the
frame
of
a
window.
C.
To
create
two
pedals
of
a
machine.
D.
To
construct
a
hand
washing
machine.
26.
What
does
the
underlined
phrase
"went
viral“
in
Paragraph
4
mean?
A.
Spread
rapidly.
B.
Disappeared
suddenly.
C.
Improved
immediately.
D.
Matured
gradually.
27.
What
can
we
learn
from
Stephen's
story?
A.
A
good
fame
is
better
than
anything.
B.
Many
hands
make
light
work.
C.
Failure
is
the
mother
of
success.
D.
A
small
child
can
make
a
big
difference.
C
The
term
“bird
brain“
is
frequently
used
to
describe
a
person's
lack
of
intelligence
and
good
decision-making
ability.
However,
some
scientists
believe
it
should
be
considered
a
praise,
given
that
many
birds
can
perform
human
tasks
like
producing
and
using
tools,
solving
problems,
and
planning
for
future
needs.
Now,
Griffin,
an
African
Grey
parrot,
has
proved
that
birds
may
even
possess
better
visual
memories
than
human
adults
and
children.
The
study,
led
by
Hrag
Pailian,
a
researcher
at
Harvard
University,
had
the
parrot
compete
in
the
game
against
twenty-one
undergraduate
students
and
twenty-one
6
to
8-year-old
children.
The
popular
challenge
involves
hiding
a
small
object
under
one
of
three
or
more
upside-down
cups,
which
arc
moved
around.
Participants
are
required
to
accurately
identify
the
cup
under
which
the
object
lies.
To
make
the
task
more
challenging,
the
researchers
required
participants
to
track
two,
three,
and
four
objects
at
the
same
time.
An
analyst
of
the
results
showed
that
Griffin
outperformed
the
6
to
8-year-olds
across
all
levels
on
average.
Even
more
impressive,
the
"bird
brain"
performed
as
well
as,
or
slightly
better
than,
the
21
Harvard
students
on
12
of
the
14
trials!
It
was
only
in
the
final
two
tests,
which
had
the
most
objects
and
most
movement,
that
the
parrot
fell
behind
the
adults.
However,
Griffin's
performance
was
never
below
that
of
the
children.
Griffin
was
the
candidate
of
choice
because
the
scientists
needed
an
animal
that
had
a
brain
functionality
similar
to
that
of
humans.
“The
fact
that
the
smart
parrot
loves
to
show
off
his
brain
power
in
exchange
for
a
few
cashews
(腰果)did
not
hurt
either",
said
Irene
Pepperberg,
a
Harvard
lecturer,
who
has
trained
Griffin
and
several
other
African
Grey
parrots,
has
been
studying
the
species
for
over
four
decades
and
is
considered
a
pioneer
in
the
study
of
bird
intelligence.
28.
What
were
the
participants
required
to
do
in
the
study?
A.
Identify
different
kinds
of
objects.
B.
Tell
where
the
hidden
object
lies.
C.
Track
other
participants'
performance.
D.
Move
around
upside-down
cups.
29.
What
did
the
results
of
the
study
indicate?
A.
6
to
8-ycar-olds
did
better
than
Griffin.
B.
Parrots
have
a
better
memory
than
other
birds.
C.
Harvard
students
have
a
better
visual
memory.
D.
Griffin
outsmarted
Harvard
students
in
some
trials.
30.
Why
was
Griffin
chosen
for
the
experiment?
A.
It
was
good
at
making
decisions.
B.
It
was
specially
trained
for
experiments.
C.
It
had
similar
brain
functions
to
human
beings.
D.
It
loved
to
show
off
his
language
power
for
some
treats.
31.
What
is
the
best
title
for
the
text?
A.
"Bird
brain”
becomes
a
term
for
a
stupid
person.
B,
Harvard

in
bird
intelligence
study.
C.

“If
you
don't
behave,
I'll
call
the
police”
is
a
lie
that
parents
generally
use
to
get
their
young
children
to
behave.
Parents'
lies
work
in
the
short
terms,
but
a
new
study
led
by
NTU
Singapore
suggests
that
they're
associated
with
harmful
effects
when
the
child
becomes
an
adult.
The
research
team
asked
379
Singaporean
young
adults
whether
their
parents
lied
to
them
when
they
were
children,
how
much
they
lie
to
their
parents
now,
and
how
well
they
adjust
to
adulthood
challenges.
Adults
who
reported
being
lied
to
more
as
children
were
more
likely
to
report
deceiving
their
parents
in
their
adulthood.
They
also
said
they
faced
greater
difficulty
in
meeting
psychological
and
social
challenges.
Lead
author
Assistant
Professor
Setoh
Peipci
from
NTU
Singapore's
School
of
Social
Sciences
said,"
Parenting
by
lying
can
seem
to
save
time
especially
when
the
real
reasons
behind
why
parents
want
children
to
do
something
is
complicated
to
explain.
When
parents
tell
children
that
‘honesty
is
the
best
policy,,
but
display
dishonesty
by
lying,
such
behaviour
can
send
conflicting
messages
to
their
children.
Parents,
dishonesty
may
eventually
break
trust
and
promote
dishonesty
in
children.
Our
research
suggests
that
parenting
by
lying
is
a
practice
that
has
bad
consequences
for
children
when
they
grow
up.
Parents
should
be
aware
of
this
and
consider
alternatives
to
lying,
such
as
acknowledging
children's
feelings,
giving
information
so
children
know
what
to
expect,
offering
choices
and
problem-solving
together,
to
help
children
develop
good
behaviour."
The
analysis
found
that
parenting
by
lying
could
place
children
al
a
greater
risk
of
developing
problems
that
the
society
disapproves,
such
as
aggression
and
rule-breaking
behaviour.
Some
limitations
of
the
study
include
relying
on
what
young
adults
report
about
their
past
experience
of
parents'
lying.
"Future
research
can
explore
using
more
information
providers,
such
as
parents,
to
report
on
the
same
topic,"
suggested
Asst
Prof
Setoh.

throw
a
textured
blanket
on
your
couch
or
bed.
I'm
also
a
huge
fan
of
carpets
on
top
of
the
wooden
floors.
Of
course,
carpels
will
help
to
physically
warm
your
space
by
offering
a
cozy
spot
for
your
feet
37
It's
also
a
good
idea
to
display
your
creations
and
collections
in
your
home.
My
wall
was
feeling
bare
one
day,
so
I
filled
die
space
with
a
simple
wall
hanging.
38
Simple,
yes,
and
it
makes
me
feel
warm
every
time
I
see
it.
Do
any
of
you
have
a
love
for
windowsills
(窗台)like
I
do?
Make
use
of
your
windowsill
by
displaying
decorations
like
feathers,
candleholders,
rocks..,
anything
you've
collected
over
the
years.
39
There’s
a
homey
feeling
that
goes
along
with
letting
your
bed
stay
unmade
for
the
day,
or
slipping
your
shoes
off
in
the
middle
of
your
bedroom.
Leave
your
closet
door
half
open;
hang
necklaces
on
your
wall;
leave
your
curtain
over
the
top
of
a
mirror
instead
of
getting
it
neatly
away.
A.
A
warm
home
usually
feels
casual.
B.
I
made
it
from
a
stick
and
some
string.
C.
I'm
proud
of
my
gill
for
creating,
wonderful
artworks.
D.
And
the
addition
can
make
a
space
feel
warmer,
just
by
looking
at
it
E.
It's
a
good
habit
to
take
time
to
get
everything
well
organized
at
home.
F.
To
me,
there's
nothing
better
tha'1
spending
a
cold
evening
in
a
warm
home.
G.
In
a
word,
if
you
make
your
space
feel
lived
in,
you'll
enjoy
living
there
all
the
time.

书面表达:
Dear
Mr.
Jefferson,
I’m
more
than
glad
to
learn
that
the
International
Culture
Weekly
will
be
held
in
our
school.
Here,
I’d
like
to
recommend
one
of
traditional
Chinese
art
forms

paper-cutting.
As
is
known
to
us
all,
paper-cutting
is
one
of
the
oldest
and
most
popular
Chinese
folk
art
forms.
Traditional
paper
cuttings
are
also
called
window
decorations,
which
are
first
put
on
the
windows
to
create
the
pleasant
atmosphere.
Nowadays,
the
art
has
evolved
uniquely
to
adapt
to
different
cultural
styles
and
presented
multiple
social
values.
Thanks
for
your
consideration.
I
will
be
honored
if
my
recommended
art
form
is
on
show.
I’m
looking
forward
to
your
early
reply.
Yours,
Li
Hua
