On
November
7th,Lewis
Pugh
completed
a
one?kilometre
swim
in
the
freezing
waters
of
King
Edward
Cove,off
South
Georgia
in
Antarctica.He
was
wearing
only
his
swimming
glasses,cap
and
speedos!
Pugh
is
an
advocate
for
our
oceans
and
seas,working
to
protect
these
ecosystem
with
their
large
diversity
of
marine(海洋的)life.When
asked
why
he
doesn't
wear
a
wetsuit,Lewis
says,“I
ask
world
leaders
to
do
everything
they
can
to
protect
our
oceans.Sometimes
the
steps
they
need
to
take
are
difficult
and
unpopular.If
I'm
asking
them
to
be
courageous,I
must
also
be.Swimming
in
a
wetsuit
would
not
send
the
right
message.”
It
took
Pugh
about
19
minutes
to
complete
the
one?kilometre
swim
in
Antarctica
where
the
water
averaged
about
1.6
degrees
Celsius(摄氏度).He
says
that
his
body
can
only
tolerate
about
20
minutes
in
the
freezing
waters
before
it
starts
shutting
down.As
he
swims,his
body
temperature
steadily
drops,which
in
turn
causes
his
muscle(肌肉)control
to
drop,slowing
him
down.When
he
is
done
with
his
swim,his
support
team
rushes
him
to
a
hot
shower
and
it
takes
almost
an
hour
for
his
body
temperature
to
return
to
normal.
Doctors
and
Pugh
caution
that
one
must
receive
months
of
training
to
swim
in
such
cold
waters.Even
expert
swimmers
who
are
unused
to
freezing
water
can
drown
within
minutes
because
of
the
physical
shock
experienced
by
the
body.Pugh
says
he
trained
for
six
months
before
this
swim.
This
is
not
the
first
time
that
Lewis
has
swum
in
dangerous
conditions.In
2007,he
swam
one
kilometre
in
the
North
Pole
to
draw
attention
to
the
melting
Arctic
ice
due
to
climate
change.In
2015,he
swam
in
the
Bay
of
Whales
in
Antarctica's
Ross
Sea
as
part
of
his
successful
campaign
to
help
set
up
a
marine
reserve
there.
4.Why
did
Lewis
Pugh
swim
without
a
wetsuit?
A.To
swim
faster.
B.To
show
his
bravery.
C.To
build
up
his
body.
D.To
win
public
attention.
5.What
does
the
underlined
word“it”in
Paragraph
3
refer
to?
A.His
body.
B.The
water.
C.His
body
temperature.
D.The
water
temperature.
6.What's
Pugh's
advice
about
swimming
in
freezing
waters?
A.One
must
be
fully
prepared.
B.One
should
be
expert
at
swimming.
C.One
should
be
ready
to
take
on
challenges.
D.One
must
be
used
to
long?distance
swimming.
7.What
may
be
the
best
title
for
the
text?
A.Lewis
Pugh:Swimming
for
a
Cause
B.How
to
Survive
a
Swim
in
Cold
Waters
C.How
to
Prepare
for
Extreme
Swimming
D.Lewis
Pugh:Achieving

Imagine
a
mass
of
floating
waste
is
two
times
the
size
of
the
state
of
Texas.Texas
has
a
land
area
of
more
than
678,000
square
kilometres.So
it
might
be
difficult
to
imagine
anything
twice
as
big.
All
together,this
mass
of
waste
flowing
in
the
North
Pacific
Ocean
is
known
as
the
Great
Pacific
Ocean
Garbage
Patch.It
weighs
about
3,500,000
tons.The
waste
includes
bags,bottles
and
containers—plastic
products
of
all
kinds.
The
eastern
part
of
the
Great
Pacific
Ocean
Garbage
Patch
is
about
1,600
kilometres
west
of
California.The
western
part
is
west
of
the
Hawaiian
Islands
and
east
of
Japan.The
area
has
been
described
as
a
kind
of
oceanic
desert,with
light
winds
and
slow
moving
water
currents.The
water
moves
so
slowly
that
garbage
from
all
over
the
world
collects
there.
In
recent
years,there
have
been
growing
concerns
about
the
floating
garbage
and
its
effect
on
sea
creatures
and
human
health.Scientists
say
thousands
of
animals
get
trapped
in
the
floating
waste,resulting
in
death
or
injury.Even
more
die
from
a
lack
of
food
or
water
after
swallowing
pieces
of
plastic.The
trash
can
also
make
animals
feel
full,diminishing
their
desire
to
eat
or
drink.
The
floating
garbage
also
can
have
harmful
effects
on
people.There
is
an
increased
threat
of
infection
of
disease
from
polluted
waste,and
from
eating
fish
that
swallowed
waste.Divers
can
also
get
trapped
in
the
plastic.
Its
existence
first
gained
public
attention
in
1997.That
was
when
racing
boat
captain
and
oceanographer
Charles
Moore
and
his
crew
sailed
into
the
garbage
while
returning
from
a
racing
event.Five
years
earlier,another
oceanographer
learnt
of
the
trash
after
a
shipment
of
rubber
ducks
got
lost
at
sea.Many
of
those
toys
are
now
part
of
the
Great
Pacific
Ocean
Garbage
Patch.
8.The

is
written
to________.
A.lead
in
the
topic
of
the
text
B.inspire
readers'
imagination
C.develop
readers'
interest
in
Texas
D.talk
about
reasons
for
water
pollution
9.What
does
the
underlined
word“diminishing”in
Paragraph
4
mean?
A.Increasing.
B.Determining.
C.Weakening.
D.Reserving.
10.What
can
we
infer
about
the
floating
garbage
according
to
the
text?
A.It
gives
rise
to
various
diseases.
B.It
does
great
harm
to
sea
animals.
C.Causes
of
it
still
remain
unknown.
D.Efforts
to
clear
it
have
been
made.
11.What
is
the
author's
purpose
in
writing
the
text?
A.To
warn
people
about
dangers
of
diving
in
the
ocean.
B.To
explore
the
future
of
the
North
Pacific
Ocean.
C.To
call
on
people
to
protect
ocean
environment.
D.To
display
some
facts
about
floating
waste.
D
We
may
think
we're
a
culture
that
gets
rid
of
our
worn
technology
at
the
first
sight
of
something
shiny
and
new,but
a
new
study
shows
that
we
keep
using
our
old
devices(装置)well
after
they
go
out
of
style.That's
bad
news
for
the
environment—and
our
wallets—as
these
outdated
devices
consume
much
more
energy
than
the
newer
ones
that
do
the
same
things.
To
figure
out
how
much
power
these
devices
are
using,Callie
Babbitt
and
her
colleagues
at
the
Rochester
Institute
of
Technology
in
New
York
tracked
the
environmental
costs
for
each
product
throughout
its
life—from
when
its
minerals
are
mined
to
when
we
stop
using
the
device.This
method
provided
a
readout
for
how
home
energy
use
has
evolved
since
the
early
1990s.Devices
were
grouped
by
generation.Desktop
computers,basic
mobile
phones,and
box?set
TVs
defined
1992.Digital
cameras
arrived
on
the
scene
in
1997.And
MP3
players,smart
phones,and
LCD
TVs
entered
homes
in
2002,before
tablets
and
e?readers
showed
up
in
2007.
As
we
accumulated
more
devices,however,we
didn't
throw
out
our
old
ones.“The
living?room
television
is
replaced
and
gets
planted
in
the
kids'
room,and
suddenly
one
day,you
have
a
TV
in
every
room
of
the
house,”said
one
researcher.The
average
number
of
electronic
devices
rose
from
four
per
household
in
1992
to
13
in
2007.We're
not
just
keeping
these
old
devices-we
continue
to
use
them.According
to
the
analysis
of
Babbitt's
team,old
desktop
monitors
and
box
TVs
with
cathode
ray
tubes
are
the
worst
devices
with
their
energy
consumption
and
contribution
to
greenhouse
gas
emissions(排放)more
than
doubling
during
the
1992
to
2007
window.
So
what's
the
solution(解决方案)?The
team's
data
only
went
up
to
2007,but
the
researchers
also
explored
what
would
happen
if
consumers
replaced
old
products
with
new
electronics
that
serve
more
than
one
function,such
as
a
tablet
for
word
processing
and
TV
viewing.They
found
that
more
on?demand
entertainment
viewing
on
tablets
instead
of
TVs
and
desktop
computers
could
cut
energy
consumption
by
44%.
12.What
does
the
author
think
of
new
devices?
A.They
are
environment?friendly.
B.They
are
no
better
than
the
old.
C.They
cost
more
to
use
at
home.
D.They
go
out
of
style
quickly.
13.Why
did
Babbitt's
team
conduct
the
research?
A.To
reduce
the
cost
of
minerals.
B.To
test
the
life
cycle
of
a
product.
C.To
update
consumers
on
new
technology.
D.To
find
out
electricity
consumption
of
the
devices.
14.Which
of
the
following
uses
the
least
energy?
A.The
box?set
TV.
B.The
tablet.
C.The
LCD
TV.
D.The
desktop
computer.
15.What
does
the
text
suggest
people
do
about
old
electronic
devices?
A.Stop
using
them.
B.Take
them
apart.
C.Upgrade
them.
D.Recycle
them.

For
nearly
50
years,Zhao
Yuming
has
been
absorbed
in
his
own
world
of
clay
figurines(泥塑).At
the
age
of
62,Zhao
is
the
only
remaining
clay
sculpture
master
craftsman
in
Laoting
County,Hebei
Province.He
has
been
officially
recognised
as
a
master
of
intangible
cultural
heritage(非物质文化遗产).__16__This
is
more
of
a
responsibility
and
a
source
of
pressure.
__17__In
ancient
times,Laoting
clay
figurines
were
mainly
children's
toys
made
by
countryside
artists.After
the
founding
of
the
People's
Republic
of
China
in
1949,there
were
several
workshops
in
villages
in
Laoting
County
and
the
production
reached
a
high
level,but
the
prices
were
too
low.__18__However,for
a
long
period,many
clay
artists
relied
on
making
and
selling
clay
figurines
at
those
poor
prices
to
make
ends
meet.
Nowadays,shopping
malls
are
full
of
high?end
toys,so
the
Laoting
clay
figurines
have
gradually
fallen
out
of
favor.__19__Zhao
said
that
although
his
children
have
other
jobs
to
feed
their
families,he
still
wants
to
pass
on
his
skills
to
them
and
his
grandchildren.“If
we
do
not
pass
it
on,we
will
do
a
disservice
to
our
country.Passing
on
the
skills,honouring
ourselves
and
repaying
the
country
is
the
best
option.”
Facing
a
demand
for
economic
development,many
regions
are
increasingly
attaching
importance
to
the
protection
of
valuable
traditional
cultural
skills.People
come
to
realise
that
developing
our
cultural
relics
promotes
the
development
of
local
economies.__20__
A.But
for
him,this
is
not
only
an
honour.
B.Later,it
became
known
as
“literary
clay
figurines”.
C.Clay
figurines
were
sold
for
just
a
few
pennies
each.
D.Laoting
clay
sculpture
has
a
nearly
500?year
history.
E.Laoting
clay
sculpture
is
an
important
part
of
Zhao's
life.
F.However,some
craftsmen
have
chosen
to
continue
the
tradition.
G.More
importantly,it
contributes
to
the
goal
of
building
“a
beautiful
China”.

假如你是李华,是你校英文报的一名记者,你打算为校报写一篇英语报道,介绍“爱心回收活动”。要点如下:
1.基本信息:
(1)送达和收集时间:每周四下午5点至6点;
(2)收集种类:废纸、塑料瓶、旧书等;
(3)地点:学校门口;
(4)参与人员:所有老师和学生。

ignoring
where
they
are.In
fact,there
have
been
several
reports
about
people
losing
their

while
taking
selfies.Several
governments
have
now
begun
treating
selfie

a
serious
threat
to

visitors
to
pay
attention
to
the
dangers
when
taking
selfies.
“Walt

speedos!
Pugh
is
an
advocate
for
our

to
protect
these

of
marine(海洋的)life.When
asked
why
he

to
protect
our

the

I'm
asking
them
to

It
took
Pugh
about
19
minutes
to
complete
the
one?kilometre
swim
in
Antarctica
where
the
water
averaged
about
1.6
degrees
Celsius(摄氏度).He
says
that
his
body
can
only
tolerate
about
20
minutes
in
the
freezing
waters
before
it
starts
shutting
down.As
he
swims,his
body
temperature
steadily
drops,which
in
turn
causes
his
muscle(肌肉)control
to
drop,slowing
him
down.When
he
is
done
with
his
swim,his
support
team
rushes
him
to
a
hot
shower
and
it
takes
almost
an
hour
for
his
body
temperature
to
return
to
normal.
Doctors
and
Pugh
caution
that
one
must
receive
months
of
training
to
swim
in
such
cold
waters.Even
expert
swimmers
who
are
unused
to
freezing
water
can
drown
within
minutes
because
of
the
physical
shock
experienced
by
the
body.Pugh
says
he
trained
for
six
months
before
this
swim.
This
is
not
the
first
time
that
Lewis
has
swum
in
dangerous
conditions.In
2007,he
swam
one
kilometre
in
the
North
Pole
to
draw
attention
to
the
melting
Arctic
ice
due
to
climate
change.In
2015,he

of
Whales
in
Antarctica's
Ross
Sea
as
part
of
his
successful
campaign
to
help
set
up
a

there.

times
the
size
of
the
state
of
Texas.Texas
has
a

area
of
more
than

big.
All
together,this
mass
of
waste
flowing
in
the
North
Pacific
Ocean
is
known
as
the
Great
Pacific
Ocean
Garbage
Patch.It
weighs
about
3,500,000
tons.The
waste
includes
bags,bottles
and
containers—plastic
products
of
all
kinds.
The
eastern
part
of
the
Great
Pacific
Ocean
Garbage
Patch
is
about
1,600
kilometres
west
of
California.The

of
the
Hawaiian
Islands

east
of
Japan.The
area

been
described
as
a
kind
of
oceanic
desert,with
light
winds
and
slow
moving
water
currents.The
water
moves
so
slowly
that
garbage
from
all
over
the
world
collects
there.
In
recent
years,there
have
been
growing
concerns
about
the
floating
garbage
and
its
effect
on
sea
creatures
and
human
health.Scientists
say
thousands
of
animals
get
trapped
in
the
floating
waste,resulting
in
death
or
injury.Even
more
die
from
a
lack
of
food
or
water
after
swallowing
pieces
of
plastic.The
trash
can
also
make
animals
feel
full,diminishing
their
desire
to
eat
or
drink.
The
floating
garbage
also
can
have
harmful
effects
on
people.There
is
an
increased
threat
of
infection
of
disease
from
polluted
waste,and
from
eating
fish
that
swallowed
waste.Divers
can
also
get
trapped
in
the
plastic.
Its
existence
first
gained
public
attention
in
1997.That
was
when
racing
boat
captain
and
oceanographer
Charles
Moore
and
his
crew
sailed
into
the
garbage
while
returning
from
a
racing
event.Five
years
earlier,another
oceanographer
learnt
of
the
trash
after
a

ducks

at
sea.Many
of

are
now

We
may
think
we're
a
culture
that
gets
rid
of
our
worn
technology
at
the
first
sight
of
something
shiny
and
new,but
a
new
study
shows
that
we
keep
using
our
old
devices(装置)well
after
they
go
out
of
style.That's
bad
news
for
the
environment—and
our
wallets—as
these
outdated
devices
consume
much
more
energy
than
the
newer
ones
that
do
the
same
things.
To
figure
out
how
much
power
these
devices
are
using,Callie
Babbitt
and
her
colleagues
at
the
Rochester
Institute
of
Technology
in
New
York
tracked
the
environmental
costs
for
each
product
throughout
its
life—from
when
its
minerals
are
mined
to
when
we
stop
using
the
device.This
method
provided
a
readout
for
how
home
energy
use
has
evolved
since
the
early
1990s.Devices
were
grouped
by
generation.Desktop
computers,basic
mobile
phones,and
box?set
TVs
defined
1992.Digital
cameras
arrived
on
the
scene
in
1997.And
MP3
players,smart
phones,and
LCD
TVs
entered
homes
in
2002,before
tablets
and
e?readers
showed
up
in
2007.
As
we
accumulated
more
devices,however,we
didn't
throw
out
our
old
ones.“The
living?room
television
is
replaced
and
gets
planted
in
the
kids'
room,and
suddenly
one
day,you
have
a
TV
in
every
room
of
the
house,”said
one
researcher.The
average
number
of
electronic
devices
rose
from
four
per
household
in
1992
to
13
in
2007.We're
not
just
keeping
these
old
devices-we
continue
to
use
them.According
to
the
analysis
of
Babbitt's
team,old
desktop
monitors
and
box
TVs
with
cathode
ray
tubes
are
the
worst
devices
with
their
energy
consumption
and
contribution
to
greenhouse
gas
emissions(排放)more
than
doubling
during
the
1992
to
2007
window.
So
what's
the
solution(解决方案)?The
team's
data
only
went
up
to
2007,but
the
researchers
also
explored
what
would
happen
if
consumers
replaced
old
products
with
new
electronics
that
serve
more
than
one
function,such
as
a
tablet
for
word
processing
and
TV
viewing.They
found
that
more
on?demand
entertainment
viewing
on
tablets
instead
of
TVs
and
desktop
computers
could
cut
energy
consumption
by
44%.

18.C [与设空处上文中的“the
