第二部分 阅读理解(共两节,满分40分)
第一节(共15小题;每小题2分,满分30分)
阅读下列短文,从每题所给的四个选项(A、B、C和D)中,选出最佳选项。
A
A
month
after
Hurricane
Katrina,I
returned
home
in
New
Orleans.
There
lay
my
house,reduced
to
waist?high
ruins,smelly
and
dirty.
Before
the
trip,I'd
had
my
car
fixed.
When
the
office
employee
of
the
garage
was
writing
up
the
bill,she
noticed
my
Louisiana
license
plate.“You
from
New
Orleans?”she
asked.
I
said
I
was.“No
charge,”she
said,and
firmly
shook
her
head
when
I
reached
for
my
wallet.
The
next
day
I
went
for
a
haircut,and
the
same
thing
happened.
As
my
wife
was
studying
in
Florida,we
decided
to
move
there
and
tried
to
find
a
rental
house
that
we
could
afford
while
also
paying
off
a
mortgage
(抵押贷款)
on
our
ruined
house.
We
looked
at
many
places,but
none
was
satisfactory.
We'd
begun
to
accept
that
we'd
have
to
live
in
extremely
reduced
circumstances
for
a
while,when
I
got
a
very
curious
e?mail
from
a
James
Kennedy
in
California.
He'd
read
some
pieces
I'd
written
about
our
sufferings
for
Slate,the
online
magazine,and
wanted
to
give
us(“no
conditions
attached”)a
new
house
across
the
lake
from
New
Orleans.
It
sounded
too
good
to
be
true,but
I
replied,thanking
him
for
his
exceptional
generosity,that
we
had
no
plans
to
go
back.
Then
a
poet
at
the
University
of
Florida
offered
to
let
his
house
to
me
while
he
went
to
England
on
his
one?year
paid
leave.
The
rent
was
rather
reasonable.
I
mentioned
the
poet's
offer
to
James
Kennedy,and
the
next
day
he
sent
a
check
covering
our
entire
rent
for
eight
months.
Throughout
this
painful
experience,the
kindness
of
strangers
has
done
much
to
bring
back
my
faith
in
humanity.
It's
almost
worth
losing
your
worldly
possessions
to
be
reminded
that
people
are
really
nice
when
given
half
a
chance.
21.The
garage
employee's
attitude
toward
the
author
was
that
of
________.
A.unconcern
B.sympathy
C.doubt
D.tolerance
22.What
do
we
know
about
James
Kennedy?
A.He
was
a
writer
of
an
online
magazine.
B.He
was
a
poet
at
the
University
of
Florida.
C.He
offered
the
author
a
new
house
free
of
charge.
D.He
learned
about
the
author's
sufferings
via
e?mails.
23.It
can
be
inferred
from
the
text
that
________.
A.the
author's
family
was
in
financial
difficulty

were
comparatively

despite
the
disaster

were
difficult
to
find
in
the
hurricane?stricken
area
D.the
mortgage
on
the
ruined
house
was
paid
off
by
the
bank
24.The
author
learned
from
his
experience
that
________.
A.worldly
possessions
can
be
given
up
when
necessary
B.generosity
should
be
encouraged
in
some
cases
C.people
benefit
from
their
sad
stories
D.human
beings

B
Benjamin
West,
the
father
of
American
painting,
showed
his
talent
for
art
when
he
was
only
six
years
of
age.
But
he
did
not
know
about
brushes
before
a
visitor
told
him
he
needed
one.
In
those
days,
a
brush
was
made
from
camel's
hair.
There
were
no
camels
nearby.
Benjamin
decided
that
cat
hair
would
work
instead.
He
cut
some
fur
from
the
family
cat
to
make
a
brush.
The
brush
did
not
last
long.
Soon
Benjamin
needed
more
fur.
Before
long,
the
cat
began
to
look
ragged
(蓬乱).
His
father
said
that
the
cat
must
be
sick.
Benjamin
was
forced
to
admit
what
he
had
been
doing.
The_cat's_lot_was_about_to_improve.
That
year,
one
of
Benjamin's
cousins,
Mr.
Pennington,
came
to
visit.
He
was
impressed
with
Benjamin's
drawings.
When
he
went
home,
he
sent
Benjamin
a
box
of
paint
and
some
brushes.He
also
sent
six
engravings
(版画)
by
an
artist.
These
were
the
first
pictures
and
first
real
paint
and
brushes
Benjamin
had
ever
seen.
In
1747,
when
Benjamin
was
nine
years
old,
Mr.
Pennington
returned
for
another
visit.
He
was
amazed
at
what
Benjamin
had
done
with
his
gift.
He
asked
Benjamin's
parents
if
he
might
take
the
boy
to
Philadelphia
for
a
visit.
In
the
city,
Mr.
Pennington
gave
Benjamin
materials
for
creating
oil
paintings.
The
boy
began
a
landscape
(风景)
painting.
William
Williams,
a
well?known
painter,
came
to
see
him
work.
Williams
was
impressed
with
Benjamin
and
gave
him
two
classic
books
on
painting
to
take
home.
The
books
were
long
and
dull.
Benjamin
could
read
only
a
little,
having
been
a
poor
student.
But
he
later
said,“Those
two
books
were
my
companions
by
day,
and
under
my
pillow
at
night.”
While
it
is
likely
that
he
understood
very
little
of
the
books,
they
were
his
introduction
to
classical
paintings.
The
nine?year?old
boy
decided
then
that
he
would
be
an
artist.
25.What
is
the
text
mainly
about?
A.Benjamin's
visit
to
Philadelphia.
B.Williams'
influence
on
Benjamin.
C.The
beginning
of
Benjamin's
life
as
an
artist.
D.The
friendship
between
Benjamin
and
Pennington.
26.What
does
the
underlined
sentence
in
Paragraph
3
suggest?
A.The
cat
would
be
closely
watched.
B.The
cat
would
get
some
medical
care.
C.Benjamin
would
leave
his
home
shortly.
D.Benjamin
would
have
real
brushes
soon.
27.What

Pennington
do
to

Benjamin
develop
his

him
to

painting
exhibitions.

him
with
painting
materials.
C.He

in
Philadelphia.
D.He

him
how
to
make
engravings.
28.Williams'
two
books
helped
Benjamin
to
________.
A.master
the
use
of
paints
B.appreciate
landscape
paintings
C.get
to
know
other
painters
D.make
up
his

C
Physical
fitness
refers
to
good
health,
and
is
the
result
of
regular
exercise,
proper
diet
and
nutrition,
and
proper
rest
for
physical
recovery.
A
person
who
is
physically
fit
will
be
able
to
walk
or
run
without
getting
breathless
and
he
or
she
will
be
able
to
carry
out
the
activities
of
everyday
living
and
will
not
need
help.
How
much
each
person
can
do
will
depend
on
their
age
and
whether
they
are
a
man
or
woman.
A
physically
fit
person
usually
has
a
normal
weight
for
height.
The
relation
between
height
and
weight
is
called
the
Body_Mass_Index.
A
taller
person
can
be
heavier
and
still
be
fit.
If
a
person
is
too
heavy
or
too
thin
for
the
height
it
may
affect
the
health.
Mental
health
refers
to
a
person's
emotional
and
psychological
well?being.“A
state
of
emotional
and
psychological
well?being
in
which
an
individual
is
able
to
use
his
or
her
thinking
and
emotional
(feeling)
abilities,
function
in
society,
and
meet
the
ordinary
demands
of
everyday
life.”
One
way
to
think
about
mental
health
is
by
looking
at
how
well
a
person
functions.
Feeling
capable
and
efficient,
being
able
to
handle
normal
levels
of
stress,
having
good
friends
and
family,
and
leading
an
independent
life,
and
being
able
to
“bounce
back,”
or
recovering
from
hardships,
are
all
signs
of
mental
health.
Public
Health
refers
to
trying
to
stop
a
disease
that
is
unhealthy
to
the
community,
and
does
not
help
in
long
life
or
promote
your
health.
This
is
fixed
by
organized
efforts
and
choices
of
society,
public
and
private
clubs,
communities
and
individuals.
It
is
about
the
health
of
many
people,
or
everybody,
rather
than
one
person.
Public
health
stops
instead
of
encouraging
a
disease
through
surveillance
(监督)
of
cases.
To
prevent
being
sick,
it
is
good
to
do
healthy
behaviors,
such
as
hand
washing,
vaccination
programs
and
so
on.
When
infectious
diseases
break
out,
washing
hands
may
be
especially
important.
29.What
is
the
best
title
of
the
passage?
A.Physical,
Mental
and
Public
Health
B.Something
about
Health
C.Importance
of
Health
D.Three

Lives
30.What
does
“Body
Mass
Index”
in
Paragraph
1
consist
of?
A.Exercise,
properdiet
and
nutrition.
B.Abilities,
functions
and
demands.
C.Recovery,
independence
and
relation.
D.Height,
weight
and
their
relation.
31.What
are
the
signs
of
mental
health?
A.Living
an
independent
life
and
suffer
from
hardships.
B.Reducing
normal
levels
of
stress
and
handle
“bounce
back”.
C.Increasing
emotional
demands
and
psychological
well?being.
D.Living
an
independent
life
and
own
good
friends
and
family.
32.Once
Bird
Flu
takes
place,
that
refers
to
________.
A.the
problem
of
physical
health
B.the
problem
of
public
health
C.the
problem
of
mental
health
D.the
importance
of
washing
hands

Starbucks
coffee
shops
can
be
found
all
over
America
and
in
more
than
thirty
countries
around
the
world.
Many
people
think
they
are
great
places
to
enjoy
a
cup
of
hot
coffee
or
tea.
But
others
dislike
the
company.
If
you
are
in
any
major
city
in
America,the
chances
are
great
that
you
are
not
far
from
a
Starbucks.
In
fact,you
might
be
very
close
to
several
of
these
coffee
shops.
The
company
started
in
the
West
Coast
city
of
Seattle,Washington,in
1971.Starbucks
was
named
after
a
character
in
the
famous
American
novel
Moby?Dick
by
Herman
Melville.
Today,there
are
more
than
12,000
Starbucks
around
the
world.
Sales
in
2008
were
almost
eight
billion
dollars.
Starbucks
sells
more
than
just
plain
coffee.
It
started
a
whole
coffee
culture
with
its
own
special
language
and
coffee
workers
called
“baristas”.It
sells
many
kinds
of
hot
and
cold
coffee
drinks;like
White
Chocolate
Mocha
and
Frappuccino.
It
also
sells
music
recorders,coffee
makers,food,and
even
books.
But
most
of
all,it
sells
the
idea
of
being
a
warm
and
friendly
place
for
people
to
sit,read
or
talk.
Starbucks
is
a
great
successful
story.
Buyers
are
willing
to
pay
as
much
as
five
dollars
for
coffee
drink.
Many
people
say
they
go
to
Starbucks
because
they
can
depend
on
it
to
have
exactly
what
they
want
and
it
is
nearby.
Some
say
Starbucks
has
helped
to
educate
people
about
coffee
from
many
countries.
However,some
people
do
not
like
the
company's
expansion.
Owners
of
independent
coffee
stores
cannot
compete
with
Starbucks.
Some
small
coffee
sellers
even
took
the
company
to
court,saying
Starbucks
controls
the
market
and
forces
out
competition.

advantage

to
know
what
are
the
right
and
wrong
statements
to
make.

London's
Chinese
community
dates
back
to
the
18th
century,
when
a
small
number
of
Chinese
sailors
moved
to
the
city
to
work
in
the
dock
area
of
Limehouse,
east
London.
As
time
went
on,
Chinese
people
came
to
this
area,
mainly
to
open
shops
and
cafes,
and
Limehouse
began
to
known
as
“Chinatown”.
However,
London's
Chinese
community
remained
very
small
for
many
years.
At
the
start
of
the
20th
century,
there
were
just
545
Chinese
people
in
Britain.
This
situation
changed
after
World
War
Ⅱ.At
that
time,
many
farmers
in
Hong
Kong
lost
their
jobs,
and
decided
to
immigrate
to
London.
As
Limehouse
had
been
destroyed
during
the
war,
these
new
immigrants
lived
in
a
different
area—a
part
of
central
London
near
Leicester
Square.
This
area
is
now
what
Londoners
call
Chinatown.
At
first,
the
new
settlers
found
it
difficult
to
get
jobs.
In
the
1950s,
however,
a
small
Chinese
restaurant
opened
in
central
London.
Many
British
people
visited
it
and
praised
that
Chinese
food
was
wonderful!
Suddenly,
Chinese
restaurants
started
opening
in
every
part
of
the
city.
This
raised
a
question:
instead
of
too
little
work,
the
new
Chinese
immigrants
now
found
that
they
had
too
much!
They
worked
very
long
hours
as
cooks,
managers
or
waiters.
Most
of
the
people
enjoyed
their
lives
and
the
chances
they
were
offered.
Many
arranged
for
their
friends
and
relatives
to
join
them
from
overseas,
and
a
lot
of
families
were
reunited
at
this
time.
As
time
went
by,
London's
Chinese
community
became
more
and
more
successful.
The
sons
and
daughters
of
the
restaurant
workers,
encouraged
by
their
parents,
studied
very
hard
at
school
and
university,
and
most
went
on
to
get
highly?paid
jobs.
As
a
result,
a
large
number
of
Chinese
families
left
Chinatown
and
moved
to
the
more
expensive
places.
Chinatown,
however,
is
still
as
lively
as
ever.
